Sensors - does size and type matter?
Photography has advanced considerably from its conception into the digital age. Along with such advancements come additional complications - different sensor types, a variety of sensor sizes, formats and files! So what does it all mean, and why does it even matter?A bit of backgroundEarly optical or photographic devices (such as the camera obscura) were little more than a simple opening - sometimes with an equally simple lens - that would allow light to pass through, the goal being to generate an image circle broad enough to cover the area required.Notice 'image circle' - given the physical properties of light, when it passes through an aperture (i.e. opening) it will reform the image as a circular image element; we simply crop this down to a rectangular image for convenience, partly because the image circle will not be sharp or bright to the very edges, nor are circular formats consistantly useful:Mike Lowemore : thinkcamera

Kodak claims its new sensor technology provides a two- to four-fold increase in sensitivity to light (from one to two photographic stops) compared to current sensor designs. “This represents a new generation of image sensor technology and addresses one of the great challenges facing our industry – how to capture crisp, clear digital images in a poorly lit environment,” said Chris McNiffe, General Manager of Kodak’s Image Sensor Solutions group. “This is a truly innovative approach to improving digital photography in all forms, and it highlights Kodak’s unique ability to differentiate its products by delivering advanced digital technologies that really make a difference to the consumer.”

How to Check and Remove/Clean sensor dust on your CCD or CMOS sensors on your Digital Cameras.
Recently got an email asking how I clean my camera.. so i decided to put a short list of acceptable cleaning practices digital photographers use today. There are two ways to clean the sensor fo your DSLR. dry cleaning method - is the safest way to clean your sensor since you dont touch the sensors surface. Only setback here is that it only takes out dust held on by static. wet cleaning method - is more aggresive cleaning method that forces you to wipe the sensor with cleaning fluids using special pads or brushes, used mainly for dust that gets stuck to sensor with moisture. The Best commercial Sensor Dust Cleaning products on the market not ranked in any particular order.. http://www.giottos.com - Use the rocket air.. only problem with this is that when the rocket air blows out air and dislodges the sensor dust, the rocket air also sucks in air.. if dust is sucked in then you will have a problem in your next cleaning session. 2. http://www.visibledust.com/ -The Artic Butterfly ha

      Image sensors: CCD vs. CMOS
CCD and CMOS are the critical components that act as a camera’s “digital film.” CCD sensors are produced using a technology developed specifically for the camera industry, while CMOS sensors are based on standard technology already extensively used in memory chips–inside PCs, for example. Today’s high quality cameras use mostly CCD sensors. Although recent advances in CMOS sensors are closing the gap, they are still not suitable for cameras where the highest possible image quality is required. However, CMOS sensors may be ideal for entry-level network cameras where size and price are important factors. See placement of an image sensor in a network camera CCD technology CCD sensors have been used in cameras for more than 20 years and present many advantageous qualities; among them, better light sensitivity than CMOS sensors. This higher light sensitivity translates into better images in low light conditions. CCD sensors are, however, m

      Wireless sensors extend Internet's reach
But critics say networks can be prone to malicious security attacks !!!LOS ANGELES - To the untrained eye, the sleek, airy building constructed atop a decommissioned nuclear reactor at the University of California, Los Angeles could pass for high-tech office space. A closer inspection of the glass-and-steel facade reveals dozens of miniature, low-resolution cameras and sensors. They're wirelessly linked to computers throughout the 6,000-square-foot space, keeping tabs on traffic flow in public areas and monitoring temperature, humidity and acoustics. The building serves as a testing ground for developing and perfecting wireless sensing technology to connect major chunks of the real world to the Internet. Such networks could monitor the environment for pollutants, gauge whether structures are at risk of collapse or remotely follow medical patients in real time. "I see this as the next wave of extending the Internet into the physical world," said computer scientist Deborah Estrin, who
