      New England Seafood Chowder
Lately, the morning air has been very crisp and cool.  As my old bones fight off the chill, my mind starts thinking about the many soups I've eaten over the years.  On a day such as this, the old mind-clock settles on the summer of 1964 when my family went out to Kennebunkport, Maine for a short vacation.  That's where I had my first taste of an authentic seafood chowder at a little cafe that was down the street from the place we were renting for the week.  Now, whenever I'm walking by the sea and happen to get a good nose-full of salty air, my tastebuds automatically recall that wonderful chowder.  Let's make some right now!Ingredients:

      Melben Seafood

      SEAFOOD: How is fugu prepared?
Fugu is pufferfish in Japanese but the word also refers to the meat prepared from certain species of pufferfish. The meat must be skillfully prepared because of the neurotoxin tetrodotoxin. Otherwise, a mistake can result in death of the consumer. What does fugu taste like? From The Huffington Post:[Food critic] Ruth Reichl has sampled deadly fugu ("It's like eating fluke," she told me, "only you're playing Russian roulette").

Bacon and eggs for breakfast, a chicken sandwich for lunch, and steak and potatoes for dinner. OPEN-OCEAN RANCHING: A better method than aquaculture to meet seafood demand or a complement to aquaculture or just not possible?
IMAGE: The species being used in the research is the black sea bass or Centropristis striata. Here is some interesting research coming out of Woods Hole, Massachusetts involving open-ocean ranching. Open-ocean ranching is an interesting idea that is worth investigating. If the project comes to full fruition it will be interesting to compare costs of open-ocean ranching with traditional aquaculture systems especially when considering predation and differing growth rates that will probably be associated with open-ocean ranching. However, there could be some gains against traditional aquaculture such as decreased disease and parasitic infections. In addition, fish farmers could market quasi-farmed fish that possibly influence the environment less. No doubt, some folks will be concerned wi

      Thai Red Curry Seafood
I made this dish last month and it came out pretty good. I used big sprouts in it then, but I didn’t really like the way they came out; kind of limp and squishy. No one likes a limp sprout. This dish, though inspired by a half a dozen recipes that I’ve seen on the web, is my entry in the Royal Foodie Joust. I was going to use the dish I made last month in the contest, I decided to make it again. Becky was very pleased with that idea. The ingredients for this month are: Seafood Lemon or lime Coconut I chose lobster, mussels, bay scallops, prawns, and a coconut-lime curry. I have been venturing into the Asian aile at the market looking to prepare some Asian inspired dishes over the next couple of weeks. Hopefully this dish is a winner! Read more »

The yam basket is thick and the when put in mouth, you feel the yam was finely meshed. The fillings was cooked with some other flavour other than the usual kung po, but I liked it. Notice the generous portion of the cashew nuts...We ordered a mixed beans vegetables cooked in sambal belacan. The four heavenly kings. Babies can't eat seafood high in mercury
I never heard about fish being advised not to eat while pregnant and shouldn't be fed to babies. Well, not until I came to the US that I heard and read about seafood that has high level of mercury. Mercury can be toxic to young children especially babies because it could affect their brain development. However, with my people back home, babies that are not even a year old eat fish, fish that I think has a high level of mercury. I think I was fed with the same fish, but nothing bothered me, nor the kids at home. We eat fish on a daily basis there if we find nothing else to eat. It is weird because here it is advised that fish should be avoided as much as possible. It must be different here because the climate is cold, so maybe the bigger the fish the higher mercury level it has. Anyway, it is just a thought I wanted to share. If you are living in the western country, do you eat fish while pregnant and breastfeeding, and feed your children under 6 years of age fish anyway?

Early humans ate seafood at beach parties
Homo sapiens ate mussels, made stone blades and used pigments earlier than anyone thought. For early humans, one of the first displays of modern behaviour was a sort of beach party and seafood feast along the coast of South Africa, scientists say. Artefacts found in a cave on coastal cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean suggest that people 164,000 years ago led much more sophisticated lives than anyone thought. Scientists say these early humans would have cooked mussels and other shellfish, used red pigment perhaps as body paint and made small stone blades that could be used at the tip of a spear. The earliest previous evidence for people using marine resources and coastal habitats was from 125,000 years ago, say the scientists who publish their findings today in the journal Nature. And the previous earliest evidence for tools like the small, thin stone blades found at the site dates to 70,000 years ago, the researchers say."We do not have human fossils from this site, but they were very l

Seafood binge in Breakthrough Restaurant, Iloilo City
I'm in Iloilo City again. I arrived at the new Iloilo Airport this afternoon from Cebu. Bernard met up with me there and we took a cab to the city proper. I wasn't feeling that well so after a brief stopover at the old Iloilo City Hall which is now part of UP Visayas, I went back to the hotel and took a nap.In the evening, Isa Silva and family took me to Breakthrough Restaurant in the Arevalo District for dinner. I'm not that fond of seafoods but it was a seafood binge for me. We had abalone sashimi, talaba and the pricey diwal shells for dinner among others. Everything is fresh and you can catch your dinner yourself. The restaurant is also by the beach so the breeze adds to the ambiance. After dinner, we had some dessert in Smallville.

      Tony Roma's Ribs.Seafood.Steaks @ Sussex St, Sydney
It was a full day of walking and sightseeing that day. It was the same day we went to the Sydney Fish Market as I remembered it. After which we were dropped to go explore Darling Harbour on our own. The plan was to go get ourselves an all day pass to travel around the Harbour Area.We also visited the Sydney Aquarium , which I thought was a magnificent tourist attraction. Their Aquarium is at least twice the size of our KLCC Aquaria (which we visited after coming back from Sydney, lol ).I remembered that night, was cold, our feet were aching so much after walking for hours doing the tourist thingy (walking up and down, looking lost).... But we already made an appointment with my cousins, to meet at Tony Roma's that night. Apparently there is only one , Tony Roma, in Australia, so the Aussies have to go to Sydney to try their ribs. After ordering, the waiter walked of to put our order in and returned in a matter of minutes with this bread loaf. Whoa, big wo.... and I loved their garlic b

      Relaunching as Angry Seafood
For awhile now I have wanted to get a new domain name because frankly having ‘Nothing to See Here’ as a name and chrisonline.com as the URL doesn’t make sense. I could buy the name but the owner wants $2,000 for it. Yah right. Besides that there is something about my blog name that I just don’t like. So I figured now was as good a time as any to come up with something better. Say hello to Angry Seafood. It is time to do a blog for fun. Shorter posts that give readers more time to comment and interact. More use of pictures and cartoons I create using the software from toondoo.com. No more blog run like a business. I will be bringing over the interview feature as well as the Licking Windows comics and some of my better essays. Just bear with me for the next few weeks. I'm using wordpress for the first time and it is a work in process. Hell, it took me like four hours to find a theme that wasn't weird, grey, blue, or boring. Well, time to go. Can Eating Fruit Offset the Toxic Effects of Mercury in Seafood ?
It has been known for decades that fish is a wonderful low-fat source of high quality protein, and that eating it can decrease your risk of heart attack, stroke, obesity and hypertension. Lately, however, there have been concerns that eating too much fish can cause an accumulation of methylmercury, a widely recognized pollutant, in our body's tissues. A recent study revealed some surprising findings that may allow us to have our cake (seafood) and eat it too (less concern about mercury). First some background - the methylmercury that is found in seafood comes primarily from power plants that burn fossil fuels, like coal. Then after it rains or snows, the contaminant is brought down into our rivers, streams, oceans and lakes. Fish then absorb it from the food chain in these bodies of water.

We must have been driving and driving for countless of hours, that night before. We left Gold Coast after visiting Q1, and Surfer's Paradise beach. No dinner, that night, just some yucky cinnamon scones, kraft cheese and Apple Juice to get us by for the journey. So reached our hotel at about 5am, and slept like logs until about 12. The first thing on the agenda was to get some real food into our stomaches. Our cousin brought us to this "famous" place called Zilver for YUM CHA...When we arrived at the place , Haymarket, we found out that it was actually an office tower with a shopping complex kinda layout on the lower floors. It was a Saturday afternoon , and the place was virtually desserted except for the people heading towards Zilver. When we arrived there, we had to get our number and wait for a table. Really HK style, and not something we see in KL. When a table that can the number of people is available, they will call your number and lead you to your seat.We were lucky, as

      Seafood binge in Capiz
I flew to Iloilo today to attend tomorrow's launching of the Ateneo Alumni Association - Iloilo Chapter. Our flight arrived at the new Iloilo Airport in Cabatuan, Iloilo at 6 a.m. We decided to proceed first to our hotel in Iloilo City to drop off our stuff.Since Sta. Barbara and Pavia were along the way, we decided to pass by to check out their churches. We had to pay PHP200 for a taxi since the new airport is several towns away from Iloilo City. Before proceeding to the bus station for Roxas City, we had batchoy for breakfast at Ted's. The bus to Roxas was about two hours and costs PHP113. We arrived at 11:30 a.m. and went straight to the Baybayon Seafood Plaza in Baybay Beach to savor the seafood. Capiz claims to be the Seafood Capital of the Philippines. The food was great and really cheap! We were shocked our bill was just PHP334. The small batya of talaba (oysters) was just PHP25; scallops were PHP5 a piece; the big pusit was just PHP40 a stick; cagaycay (shells) for the soup was

Happy 27th Birthday 18 days ago! Geez! Of course not silly! It is sooo not my birthday yet (but my birthday is around the corner, so do remember my present). And I am sooo not 27 years old! Though I'm somewhat considered an adult (IceAngel loves reminding me that), I'm still within the early 20'er group. *Phew* How I wish I could go to never never land... Oh well, I still have a couple of years to learn the works of being an actual adult-adult. It's such a pity that humans have to grow old up. Sigh. Why does time go by so quickly? /me taking a walk through memory lane... I still remember the days when I didn't have to worry when my next pay cheque would arrive. Money was important, but I didn't really have to earn it, I had my allowance to sustain my so-called materialistic expenses. Life was so much simpler... School... Homework... Projects... Exams... Grades... Friends... Shopping... Gaming... Fun? It seems like just yesterday... /me slap myself to wake up from my "day dream"..

Best eat with the chili sause.TS Tomyam Seafood Mee and Meehoon Noodle - taste good for the tom yam soup, but too spicy for me to finish the whole soup as it's quite spicy.

Olhao Seafood Festival - Festival do Marisco
I have a confession to make: I’m a seafood addict! I love it all — shrimp, crab, snails, lobster, conquilhas, conch, octopus, squid (aka calamari), cuddle fish, and the list goes on….some of these you may never have heard of but you’ll be introduced soon. To my delight, every year around this time there is a seafood festival in a little fishing village right here in the Algarve. Olhao is a historic fishing village just 7km, East of Faro and their “Festival do Marisco” has become famous worldwide. The Annual “Festival do Marisco” in Ohlao, is now in its 22nd year of providing grilling, stewing and steaming bliss for us seafood zealots. This finger licking fun-filled event kicked off Friday, August 10th and will continue through Wednesday, August 15th. We won’t be missing this one; Moses and I will be at the festival on Wednesday, August 15th. If you’re planning on being there, let us know, we would love to get together over some freshly grilled tigers and a Sup

      China Imposes Indonesian Seafood Ban
China has banned Indonesian seafood after checks turned up dangerous contamination, the Beijing government's food regulator said. Indonesian authorities called the move an apparent reaction to an Indonesian ban on some tainted Chinese products. The announcement did not cite any specific seafood products but the Chinese administration said Indonesian products have been found to contain mercury and cadmium, metals that can accumulate in water and soil from burning garbage, mining or other industrial processes. Both contaminants also have been linked to nerve damage, cancer, and other health problems.Martani Huseini, a senior official at Indonesia's Department of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, said Chinese move appeared to be a reaction to an import ban imposed over safety concerns last month on Chinese food supplements, cosmetics and medicines.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com

      “Celebrate Seafood” Dinner Series
Many thanks to Annie from the New England Aquarium for letting me know about their "Celebrate Seafood" dinner series focused on sustainable seafood. Do you guys remember reading an article last November about how we're going to run out of seafood over the next 50 years? An article was published in Science and there were local news articles everywhere covering it. Here's a link to a BBC article from that time (here).I'm a huge seafood lover. I drove up to Rockport a few weeks ago to get some lobster and do some kayaking. I'm planning on still being around in 2050, and life would suck if there was no seafood left. So everyone do your part to at least be educated on the situation and what alternatives are available. This Tuesday, July 31st, the dinner series will feature Barramundi, an ocean-friendly replacement for Chilean sea bass. BTW, the real name for Chilean Sea Bass is Patagonian Toothfish - just a little bit of trivia for you. My head is full of useless trivia. Click
