For three years the Philadelphia council of the Boy Scouts of America held its ground. It resisted the city’s request to change its discriminatory policy toward gay people despite threats that if it did not do so, the city would evict the group from a municipal building where the Scouts have resided practically rent free since 1928.
Hailed as the birthplace of the Boy Scouts, the Beaux Arts building is the seat of the seventh-largest chapter of the organization and the first of the more than 300 council service centers built by the Scouts around the country over the past century.
But over the years the fight between the city and the Scouts was about more than this grandiose structure in Center City.
Municipal officials said the clash stemmed from a duty to defend civil rights and an obligation to abide by a local law that bars taxpayer support for any group that discriminates.
It’s been done to death, I know… Still, let’s put the blame where it belongs.
The entire time I was in Scouts, God wasn’t a big issue. I’ve later learned that the official policy of the Boy Scouts is not to define God.
That’s right, the Scouts REFUSE to define God; they accept whatever definition the individual chooses.
They refuse to do this in order to say that they are not a religious organization that falls on the wrong side of the Church/State wall. And really, they are not. The closest the scouts come to being a religious organization is a requirement that the participant be reverent toward some concept that he considers to be God. While this SOUNDS like it is religious, the reality is that it is just a poorly worded parallel to the Freedom of Religion clauses of the First Amendment.

For those of you from not around here, Cambridge Massachusetts is probably the most liberal city in the country. That may be over stating it a bit, San Francisco is probably still ahead, but Cambridge is one of the most liberal cities in the country, and probably the most liberal in New England. Cambridge is also a sanctuary city, although that has nothing to do with this story I thought I would throw that out there.
Cambridge recently had their city elections and the Boy Scouts had an idea. That idea, while sounding innocent enough was enough to enrage the liberal officials of this city. What was the idea that so offended Cambridge city officials? The Boy Scouts decided to have an election day drive to collect care packages for the troops serving in Iraq. They set up drop off boxes at the polling stations where people could drop off toiletries and other little items that are not available to our brave troops overseas.

Chuck Hagel has been given an award by the Boy Scouts of America. The AP reports that the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a lower court ruling and allowed the Pentagon to continue its support of the National Boy Scout Jamboree.
Two Chicago-area “religious leaders,” aided and abetted by the ACLU, sued the Pentagon in 1999, whining that the Boy Scouts should not receive public support because Scouts require members to swear an oath of “duty to God.”
But the court displayed better sense than the men who filed the suit. “Even assuming that it is correct to characterize the BSA as a ‘religious’ organization, this statute is for the purpose of assisting the military in persuading a new generation to join its ranks and in building good will. When I first started dancing, one of my friends told me about her leading a dance class for Girl Scouts so that they could get one of their badges (excuse me if my terminology is not correct. I was never a Girl Scout). Now, eleven years later, I will be doing it for my niece's troupe.I have to say that I am really glad that Girl Scouts have been open to letting belly dancers come into their troupes to do demonstrations and classes. I think it's so positive when young people can be exposed to the art of the dance. Hopefully that means that more and more people will grow up never having been exposed to the negative stereotypes of us as hootchie kootchie dancers.I am really looking forward to this. I know that other dancers have been doing this for ages, and I hope that it continues.
The dogs and I had an awesome time snow camping. This was our first time snow camping together, and the dogs ended up doing really well. Apart from the crazy people who were hiking in the moonlight at 2 AM!, I had an awesome time with the dogs. We ended up packing in a lot of the Boy Scouts gear, and we did 3 trips to get it up to our camp area. The next day I took the dogs for an awesome 6 mile training run, and we had a blast! I am going to be sure to camp with the dogs again!
