Negotiations have ended and come June 1, 2008 - the Boy Scouts will have to have vacated Beaux Art Building. For three years the Philadelphia council of the Boy Scouts of America held its ground. It resisted the city’s request to change its discriminatory policy toward gay people despite threats that if it did not do so, the city would evict the group from a municipal building where the Scouts have resided practically rent free since 1928. Hailed as the birthplace of the Boy Scouts, the Beaux Arts building is the seat of the seventh-largest chapter of the organization and the first of the more than 300 council service centers built by the Scouts around the country over the past century. But over the years the fight between the city and the Scouts was about more than this grandiose structure in Center City. Municipal officials said the clash stemmed from a duty to defend civil rights and an obligation to abide by a local law that bars taxpayer support for any group that discriminates.

I’ve later learned that the official policy of the Boy Scouts is not to define God. That’s right, the Scouts REFUSE to define God; they accept whatever definition the individual chooses. They refuse to do this in order to say that they are not a religious organization that falls on the wrong side of the Church/State wall. And really, they are not. The closest the scouts come to being a religious organization is a requirement that the participant be reverent toward some concept that he considers to be God. While this SOUNDS like it is religious, the reality is that it is just a poorly worded parallel to the Freedom of Religion clauses of the First Amendment. That idea, while sounding innocent enough was enough to enrage the liberal officials of this city. What was the idea that so offended Cambridge city officials? The Boy Scouts decided to have an election day drive to collect care packages for the troops serving in Iraq. Four more men have joined the previous two “Jack Does” in claiming abuse suffered at the hands of the same church and scout leader. Timur Dykes, a former Mormon spiritual leader and scout leader and previously convicted sex offender is at the heart of this case as the one accused of sexual assault. Dykes has not been named as part of the lawsuit, however. The lawsuit is seeking $25 million in damages from the two organizations. A spokesman for the Boy Scouts of America defended the organization saying that they work hard to protect the boy scouts from predators. Two years ago, an official with the Boy Scouts who headed up a national task force to protect children from sexual abuse was himself convicted of possessing and distributing child pornography.
