      Ask an Amateur Scientist: Pareidolia
By Brian Thompson I. The Setup When Monet Sledge of Lorain, Ohio went in for an ultrasound in preparation for the birth of her first child, I’m sure she didn’t expect to meet Jesus Christ face to suffering face. Personally, I’ve never been able to make anything out of ultrasound pictures. They’re all fuzzy gray blobs to me. Of course, usually the fully formed and exo-wombed child is nothing but a gray blob to me. But even though I have trouble making heads or tails of an unborn baby’s head or tail, I don’t think I’d mistake the gaseous mass for Christ on the cross.

Ask an Amateur Scientist: Dungeons & Dragons
By Brian Thompson The Setup My amateur science practice takes up a lot of my free time. Sure, it doesn't pay anything, and it's really nothing more than looking at certain aspects of human behavior and snarkily quipping at it, but it takes a lot out of a guy. When I'm not debunking, dismissing, deconstructing, or spending time with my family (in that order), I'm usually sleeping. Or, if my copy of Grand Theft Auto IV worked (thanks a lot, Rockstar Games), shooting hookers with rocket launchers. Which is why I was as surprised as anyone to find myself in a rare moment of leisure contemplating sitting in front of the keyboard and typing a short story about my Dungeons & Dragons character.

Scientist Says Earth On The Way To A New Ice Age
So Much For Global Warming...Temperature Tied To SunspotsA San Francisco-based scientist says that current solar activity strongly indicates that the earth is on the verge of a new ice age."Sorry to ruin the fun, but an ice age cometh," warns Phil Chapman writing in The Australian. Chapman is a geophysicist and astronautical engineer who was the first Australian to become a NASA astronaut."Disconcerting as it may be to true believers in global warming," he explains, "the average temperature on earth has remained steady or slowly declined during the past decade, despite the continued increase in the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide, and now the global temperature is falling precipitously.Chapman wrote that the global warming dogma should be put aside, "at least to begin contingen

Salt Water Can "Burn," Scientist Confirms
Salt water can indeed burn when exposed to a certain kind of radio wave, a university chemist has confirmed.Rustum Roy of Pennsylvania State University verified earlier this month that the radio waves break the water into its components, allowing the resulting freed hydrogen and oxygen to catch fire.Independent scientists said the phenomenon is credible as explained, though practical applications of the technology remain uncertain and it's unlikely to be a source of cheap energy.

      Ask an Amateur Scientist: Raelians
By Brian Thompson I. The Setup With all the polygamy in the news lately, you’d think creepy cults would be all the rage. Why go to the office every day and pretend to work while you watch people fail at ineptly planned physical stunts? If there’s anything I learned from watching American Beauty (other than the fact that plastic bags are both environmentally disastrous and utterly beautiful to the emotionally stunted) it’s that the 9 to 5 life is, like, prison, man. Better to sit in your garage all day smoking the neighbor’s pot and lusting after your teenage daughter’s freakishly bird-like friend. However, the one downside to living an Oscar-winning life of leisure (aside from being murdered by your Nazi, gun-loving, closeted homosexual, ludicrously unbelievable stereotype of

Reduce carbon emissions or else, NASA scientist warns
The earth is doomed unless we do more to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Head of the Nasa Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, James Hansen, told the EU that their 550 parts per million of C02 was simply not good enough, and should be slashed down to 350 ppm.  Europe’s 550 ppm target is already the world’s most rigorous, with countries like the US and China not even coming close to this figure.  Hansen is convinced that levels need to be drastically reduced if, "humanity wishes to preserve a planet similar to that on which civilization developed". The new figure of 350 ppm is a number that scientists have developed after dredging up large amounts of muddy crap from the bottom of the ocean to study the levels of Co2 present in it. Wh
