by: Gary HigbeeI decided to write this guide because a couple of years ago I was the "beginner." I don't claim to be a master at it, but I have lost my fair share of fish and have put a few in the freezer each year. Let me start by saying that, to the best of my knowledge, Michigan has the best Salmon fishery in the United States except for Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest (which is where our Sal
Hokkaido Toki Salmon, originally uploaded by Tony Alexander. The average life span of salmon is between five and seven years, in which time they go through an amazing transition between fresh water and salt water - anadromous. I used to be ‘insane’. Before you picture me flying over any cuckoo’s nest, I’ll have you know of the sensibilities of that terminology. I was just a penguin deported to Antarctica with the others, except that his mind was still circling the Arctic. An animal that walked down paths paved by drunken men, in short lazy steps. The most skillful Eskimos would try to hunt this penguin down, dra

This is lazy cooking at its best - no more than five minutes prep beforehand, and the cooking time is merely the two minutes it takes to sear the fish fillets on both sides. The flavours of Orange and Juniper are subtle but definitely present, and the slight bite of the citrus goes well with the oiliness of the salmon.I generally serve this with a light green vegetable - more often than not juli
Two summers ago, on a business trip to the BC interior, I had the pleasure of spending a night in Salmon Arms. At the time, I did a lousy watercolour of the view of the lake from the wharf near the Prestige Inn. Although the day was hazy, I made the mistake of placing my board in full sun and the colours came out horrible. In the glaring light of the sun, the colours sparkled with blues and subtle

Bridges, vehicles and hatcheries are safer places to view bears in action. They will often hunt at obstacles in the river where fish are forces into shallow water or need to jump in order to get by.

After really enjoying the grilled lamb, I had a quite a bit of the tzatziki sauce left. I had used it for potato salad and to top the lamb, but I was out of ideas. So I’m thinking, gyros? Wasn’t in the mood for them. See that’s the thing, I am not the most creative cook in the kitchen. Coming up with ideas generates quite a bit of brain smoke. I wish I could be more like you
The chinook salmon have returned in masses at the Big Qualicum River. The underwater viewing area is open and lots of fish can be seen in the river as well. There is plenty of bear scat along the rainforest trails through big trees, so keep an eye out for them around dusk. Wait by one of the little rapids below the hatchery bridge to see them jump.

Yesterday evening in a fish restaurant with friends catching up on news. In the end, all of us made lengthy special journeys because we'd all had changes to our agendas. As a once closely knit group, we'd all spun off in different directions, so this was

I think my readers know our family loves seafood. Whether it's shrimp, catfish, salmon or crab, we have seafood at least once or twice a week. On our vacation in Germany, my wife had a salmon fillet with a rösti crust at a restaurant. It was very good, so I tried to cook the dish here at home. It worked at the first attempt! A thin layer of dill and a mild horseradish cream sauce

Slate has a fascinating article today on the struggle to protect dwindling numbers of salmon in Oregon.
For years, conservationists and fishermen have suspected that the sudden disappearance of large numbers of Chinook salmon was attributable to sea lions traveling up the Columbia River to find and eat the endangered species. At one point, it was suggested that the sea lions be killed or

I’m gearing up for preschool to start in September, when I won’t be right there to help my son with frustrating food in his meals. Kids this age are still perfecting utensil use, so it’s important to either cut things small or pack finger food. This month

Lon really knows how to make a girl happy. I've been talking about how I want to be a judge on Iron Chef, so for my birthday, he called up a few restaurants to find out who would make a salmon tasting menu just for me. I would get to taste and judge each dish. The idea alone made me feel special enough, but Chef /Owner Jeremy Marshall at Aquagrill Aquagrill came up with quite an impressive menu, which was then executed almost flawlessly by his Chef de Cuisine John, only I'm pretty sure it took them more than the one hour Iron Chef would allot. They even printed a nice little menu for me.The eight courses of salmon were all well thought out, highlighting different types of salmon and different preparations, ordered in a progression that made sense, and overall just impressed us very much.T
MONTEREY - Wildlife regulators on Friday canceled most of the salmon fishing season in the Central Valley, a potential $20 million hit for the state's already struggling economy. The unprecedented restrictions make it illegal to fish for salmon with one exception: a stretch of the Sacramento River from north of Woodland to Red Bluff, and only in November and December.Even then, limits will be strict: just one fish per person per day. A normal season would see up to six months of fishing with two fish per day.

Hundreds of thousands of fall Chinook salmon normally return to the Sacramento River every year to spawn. This year, however, scientists estimate that fewer than 60,000 adult Chinook will make it back to the Sacramento River.
This is far below the level needed to sustain the population.
Although the reasons for the sudden decline are not completely understood, scientists have suggested that changes in ocean conditions, including unfavorable shifts in ocean temperature and food sources for juvenile salmon, may be in part responsible.
