How Fire Sprinkler Systems Have Made Things Safer Through The Years
Fire sprinklers are one of those items that is out of sight and out of mind. Through the years, however, advancements in these devices have made surviving fires much more likely. The story of fire sprinklers begins with a piano factory, and a man named Henry. Henry Parmelee is credited with creating the first fire sprinkler around the year 1864. He was tired of watching large buildings go up in flames due to unforeseen fires, and he wanted a way to protect his own piano factory. Parmelee got in touch with a few creative individuals, expressed his concerns and ideas, and eventually came up with a product that he could patent and sell. Unfortunately for Henry, the model fire sprinkler that he came up with was rather expensive to purchase, which turned a lot of individuals off of his idea. R

It was, after all, more than six months ago that Betty Perry was tackled by Officer James Flygare, a member of the Orem, Utah’s Neighborhood [...]

The first good news of the year for readers at Resourcex Investor was the price of gold. The start of the year heralded all-time high prices for gold easily topping $900 per ounce, driven by the weak US dollar, high oil prices and renewed geopolitical concerns. Just a month later, gold continues to break all [...]

Home Birth is a Safe Option, but is is Safer?
I have a blog that I started a few months ago. It was called The Vineyard of Prayer and was supposed to be a prayer blog, however, it did not evolve as I expected and has been mostly dormant. Upon finding out that I am expecting my sixth child, I rededicated The Vineyard of Prayer to my pregnancy and has now become a parenting blog.I renamed it TheOliveParent. Like, In Spirit and In Truth, it is a faith based blog, but doesn't necessarily cater to professed Believers only. It focuses on parenting issues as well as pregnancy, childbirth, home birth, breastfeeding and any topics associated with it.I wrote a post today regarding home birth and the safety of it compared to a hospital birth for low-risk women. Because of the nature of the post, I thought it would be fitting for this blog as wel

      2008: A year of safer children's products?
Lead-tainted toy trains, drug-laced craft sets, collapsing cribs -- it is no wonder the nation turned its attention to children's product safety in 2007. Congress held hearings and drafted legislation. The 2008 spending bill recently signed by President Bush will increase funding to the beleaguered US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Legislation pending in the House and Senate will also

Glowing Umbrella Keeps You Infinitesimally Safer at Night
Glowing umbrellas usually light up their shafts rather than their mushroom-like tips, but this concept "Glowing Umbrella" has a glowing parasol to illuminate your way at night. It's lovely in the way that a black, non-light up umbrella isn't, but is only a concept for now. If science and technology could manage to make one of these that doesn't require swapping out batteries every other day (and make it under $50), we'd be in for four.>Link exchange with Tech Gadget Blog ? Safer school buses
Feel like your children aren't secure enough in their school buses? You're not alone. US Transportation Secretary Mary Peters unveiled a proposal today to make school bus seat backs four inches taller and to require short buses to begin using shoulder strap seat belts, the AP reports. Peters didn't go so far as to recommend mandated seat belts in all buses, saying local school districts should decide for themselves whether to retrofit their buses. "Our proposed rule would make children safer, put parents at ease and give communities a clearer picture of how to protect students," Peters said in a news release. "It's never too late to learn, especially when it comes to protecting our children." The department will take comments on the proposed rule for the next 60 days.

      Safer, more efficient nuclear plants
By Lucy Sherriff Researchers at MIT have developed technology they say will boost the power output of nuclear power plants by 50 per cent, and make them safer to run.The technology applies to pressurised water reactors. In these, water is used as a coolant, and is kept under pressure to prevent it from boiling. The uranium is also used to heat water, stored separately from the coolant system, generating steam which in turn is used to generate electricity.By modifying the shape of the uranium pellets used to fuel the plants, the researchers say they can lower the operating temperature of the plant, and increase heat transfer, Reuters reports. On the face of it the technique seems very simple, although as it took three years to develop, it's probably actually quite complicated.Normal uranium dioxide fuel is made into solid cylindrical pellets. The MIT researchers' technique works instead with hollow tubes of the fuel. This increases the surface area of the uranium exposed to the water,

BRIC market looks safer even as worry of a bubble lingers
From India TimesNEW YORK: For all the concern about stock-market bubbles in Brazil, Russia, India, China, the biggest emerging markets still may have more promise than anything in the developed world. The simple math of comparing the value of companies with their countries’ combined gross domestic product shows the so-called BRIC markets total $1.71 trillion, or 25% of their GDP.US equities available for trading, by contrast, are worth $13.98 trillion, or about the same as comparable GDP, according to data compiled by Morgan Stanley. Stocks in all industrialised nations account for 81% of GDP.That helps explain why the BRICs are “in the early stages of the rally,” said Jeffrey Kleintop, who helps oversee $163 billion as chief market strategist at LPL Financial Services in Boston and is adding to his ‘overweight’ in developing-nation stocks by selling shares in industrialised countries. “You’re seeing a lot of areas run up, but it’s not gotten to the point where it is re

BALANCED FUNDS: A Safer Approach To Investing In Volatile Markets
In times of volatile market movements, it is a challenge for some investors to keep their emotions in check. When markets are in a strong rally, our herd instinct compels us to join the crowd and ride with the upside. But when markets correct, we are prone to sell out in panic. Yet, the wisest thing for investors to do at such times may be to remain calm and maintain a focused approach for their investments. Keeping an investment portfolio that is invested across different asset classes is a sound and effective strategy to ride through periods of adverse market movements.Stock markets are volatile by nature and as illustrated in recent weeks, extended periods of rising share prices can often be interrupted by sudden bouts of consolidation. In such times, investors with moderate risk profiles should consider holding a balanced fund which is invested in both equities and bonds in near equal proportions. Balanced funds aim to provide income and capital growth over the medium to long term

      Impediments to Making Us Safer
On September 12, I posted an article on the Counterterrorism Blog addressing the question “are we safer as a nation now than we were before 9/11”. I stated that we were safer but not safe, which is a prevailing theme. I attributed our safety, in great part, to the government agencies at the federal, state and local level, which are responsible for protecting us against the threat of terrorism. On the federal level, agencies to include the FBI, CIA and Treasury have transformed themselves to better...(read more)

      safer alternatives for male impotence
Last weekend, I read in a health publication that alot of younger men today are facing erectile dysfunction problems. Contrary to what people classify as a problem that relates to older men, erectile dysfunction or impotence has no respecter of age at all. In 1998, when viagra was launched in the marketplace, it took the medical marketplace by storm since it seemed to create a new glimpse of hope to men, being a solution to sexual impotence. But viagra is also known for its side effects and health risks especially if there is a presence of certain health conditions. Lately, men are turning to viagra alternatives as a safer option since it is made of all-natural ingredients and promises no side effects. One of these is called The Blue Pill, which works very much like the actual viagra but carries no risks and side effects. Another reason why it is drawing much attention is the price point. The blue pill is alot cheaper than viagra, does not require any doctor’s prescription and i

FDA Oversight of Clinical Trials -- Who's Safer, Rats or Humans?
The Food and Drug Administration does very little to ensure the safety of the millions of people who participate in clinical trials, a federal investigator has found. In a report due to be released Friday, the inspector general of the Department of Health and Human Services, Daniel R. Levinson, said federal health officials did not know how many clinical trials were being conducted, audited fewer than 1 percent of the testing sites and, on the rare occasions when inspectors did appear, generally showed up long after the tests had been completed.
