Life ruined because of holiday injury
Life ruined because of holiday injury A summer holiday is meant to be a time for relaxing; enjoying drinks by the beach and soaking up some of the continental culture. However, for some people it can be the complete opposite, resulting in injury, trauma and a great deal of distress. One case involves how a man slipped [...]

How George Carlin Ruined My 12 Year Old Life
As I sip my coffee this morning I'm yawning. My day started at 4:45 with my husbands alarm clock going off to get ready for work. As I laid there in bed I then heard him leave at the same time I heard my oldest daughter getting up for weight lifting class. I dozed a little bit, secure in the fact that my coffeemaker was programmed to come on at 5:45 and I had all my bases covered. This

Rent Vs. Buy Myths That Ruined the Housing Market
I have previously (here, here and here) talked about my aversion to the concept of mortgage debt (Old French “death pledge”). I was sort of grasping at the reasons behind it, the justifications for co-owning a home with a bank just rang hollow to me. Now the folks at eFinanceDirectory have addressed most of these myths head-on from an economics standpoint, and found much as I did intuitively, that buying a house is never, ever, a wise investment. Most interesting is the investigation of the real return on housing. Funniest is the link to Mortgage Lenders at the bottom of the article. Perhaps as people realize now that house values can go down just as easily as up, we can get back to talking about homes as what they are, shelter, and stop spewing misinformation about what they a

NFL SNF Wrap: Romo wasn't ruined, Owens was
Tony Romo wasn’t distracted by the many faces of Jessica in the crowd. He had one touchdown and one interception in the Cowboys 20-13 victory over the Panthers last night. It was a bittersweet game though with good news and bad news for Cowboys fans. First the bad news, Terrell Owens was injured during the game with a high ankle sprain. One of the most dreaded injuries in sports. (see video below) He will have an MRI today and we will find out how long we will be without everyones favorite Cowboy. The good news for the Cowboys was that Tony Romo’s injured right thumb didn’t seem to affect him so much, especially like it did last week. They were very careful the whole week with Romo, not letting him take any snaps during practice. On the first snap of the game it seemed to be an issue with their backup center as Romo fumbled right when he received it. Before leaving, Owens did look good on his touchdown catch. He just made the Panthers cornerback Richard Marsha

Last night a DJ ruined my life
Okay, so I've been in the Philippines for 4 days, and I have lots to write about it. For starters, here in Boracay, there's more tang on sale than I've ever seen in my life. Surprisingly, I don't mean whores, I mean the ghetto astronaut drink. It's everywhere. There are convenience store signboards just announcing: TANG! While I haven't partaken yet, there's only so long one can go without indulging in the homeless man's Kool-Aid. Anyway, I want to start a running series on, for lack of better term, douchebaggery. I must ask, is there a field more full of douchebags (not counting suburban police and mall security) than DJs? Is there a less educated/less talented person that could have more effect on your life in certain situations? I mean, these are high-school dropouts with czar-like power over a given club. Granted, I am not talking about high end DJs that are good at what they do, and often work at the top clubs in LA, Vegas, Chicago, New York, London, Paris, Berli

      Vaccines ruined by poor refrigeration
Every year, thousands of American children go through the tearful, teeth-gritting ordeal of getting their vaccinations, only to be forced to do it all over again. The vaccines were duds, ruined by poor refrigeration. It is more than a source of distress for parent and child. It is a public health threat, because youngsters given understrength vaccines are unprotected against dangerous diseases. And it accounts for a big part of the $20 million in waste incurred by the federal Vaccines for Children program. “This is a substantial problem that needs to be addressed through prevention, and when problems are discovered, often times through revaccinations,” said Dr. Lance Rodewald, director of immunization services at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. By CDC estimates, hundreds of thousands of doses of vaccines against such diseases as flu, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, mumps, measles, chicken pox and the cervical cancer virus are thrown ou

Remember the time mom blamed us for ruining all the floors, but really SHE ruined them by obsessively running that darn dishwasher?
Guess What?School DID end up getting canceled yesterday. You know, right after I got home from getting them there, and then getting snowed in at home. The snow plows don't come down our road until everything else in the entire county has been plowed twice. So, I got to maneuver my way down the driveway, and then down the road to get to my children. When I got to the school Isaiah saw me and said " oh man. I was hoping you hadn't heard school was canceled... I wanted to stay and play [in the snow fort he and his friends had made]" Gee. I love you too buddy. And RISKED MY LIFE GETTING HERE!!!! Ahem. Moving right along...I kept thinking it was strange the timing of the dishwasher breaking, and flooding our house secretly. Just days after our appraisal. Can you imagine if all this would have happened right BEFORE the appraisal??? Yikes.I made a phone call to our insurance company and found out that the damage the dishwasher caused is covered. Praise The Lord for Homeowners I

Apple's Marketing Strategy is Ruined in Europe
Vodafone may ruin Apple's well thought-out marketing plan. Giving exclusive rights on iPhone to a single operator is a simple and fantastic idea and there is no doubt that this simple strategy has worked for Apple perfectly in the USA.However, as we have assumed, it would not be as easy in Europe as in the States. Moreover, Vodafone has won an injunction preventing T-Mobile from selling the iPhone in Germany. This fact is a failure of Apple's strategy in Europe's largest market.Interestingly, as of now, there's some confusion about the extent of the injunction and it seems that even experts are not fully aware whether it is a total ban or SIM-free iPhones can still be sold.I don't think German's will be left without iPhones. Most likely sales of the device will be resumed shortly and it is expected that German consumers will be able to purchase SIM-free iPhones. If this happens in other European markets (UK, France, etc), it is very interesting to see how this will be reflected o

5 Cognitive Biases that Ruined My Trading
I’m almost finished with Way of the Turtle by Curtis M. Faith. In the book, there’s a section on some of the cognitive biases that traders and investors experience. A cognitive bias, according to the book, is a “distortion in the way people perceive reality”. I thought it would be interesting to list my Top 5 and how I’m dealing with them. 1. Loss Aversion: Simply stated, it is the preference for avoiding losses instead of acquiring gains. When I follow the rules of my system and lose $100, I feel the pain is more intense then if I had missed a trade that would have made me $100. Where I have seen improvement is I would rather take a trade because I am following my rules and lose $100 then not take the trade because I ignored my rules and avoid losing the $100. Traders who are prone to loss aversion would rather ignore their rules and not lose $100 than follow their rules and lose $100. The reason loss aversion is “bad” is that it causes the

Everything has ruined the music business
Digital Daily this morning is running a report on how Itunes has now killed off the music business, First it was piracy, then it was bittorrent, then it was P2P, then it was Microsoft, then it was DRM, then it was something else. The music industry excels at putting the blame on everything around them, other than themselves. It is a sad state of affairs when an entire industry needs to blame someone else for their current woes, facing reality is one of the hallmarks of a good business, a good manager, and a good leader. They know the issue is internal, and they come up with a good plan on how to fix the problem. They learn to move with the ebb and flow of how customers do things, and they come up with ways to profit from where business is going. They do not whine, they do not point fingers, they do take action. Many people have told the music industry in one form or another than the way to deal with the new world of music is to go on line, they were saying this as far back as 1999.

      She Ruined My Day!
I was all set to have a rotten day today. Last night my mind was churning with cranky thoughts. The friend I'd had a spat with. How I'd eaten too much fudge before bed. The way the lights on the oil heater in our bedroom flicker flashed in sporadic bursts of green and orange.I'd even half written a post in my head, full of whinging, whining, and self-pity. I drifted off to sleep, feeling a great deal more pathetic than usual. I had a restless sleep, and awoke groggy and grumpy, fully prepared to put my grouchy plans into action. And then it happened. As I snuggled with my cold ridden, stuffy nosed girls, and mumbled sleepy Love Yous to them, Becca turned to me and said in her sweetly sing-song voice, "Love you!"I was shocked, and turned to Neil for confirmation that I'd heard right. He nodded, bleary eyed, with a faint grin. You see, this was a first. A bit surprising considering Becca is twenty months old, and has a fairly extensive vocabularly for her age. But in the past, wheneve

How Starbucks Ruined The Red River Shootout
This morning was the perfect time to run some errands because most people were in Dallas for the game or already at some party getting their drink on. I decided to stop at the grocery store to get a couple of avocados. I'll be honest, I felt like doing some emotional eating while I watch the game. Have I mentioned that we are very serious about our football? Anyway, my trip to get stuff for guacamole turned into a $50 trip. How did that happen? Because I was at the store much longer than I anticipated I was offered a sample of Starbucks Pumpkin Latte. Honestly, I think Starbucks has some of the worst coffee in the world. But I love pumpkin and I figured between the pumpkin and the latte, the coffee would be sufficiently disguised. Also, the little cups with the little straws were very appealing. With all of these things going for this itty bitty drink, how could I lose? Well, by drinking the nastiest thing ever made -- that's how. My stomach is still churning two hours

      Has Recruiting Ruined Youth Football?
By Dave Cisar Recruiting Has Gone Mad in Youth FootballThe private coaches/team clinics I do all across the country for youth football teams are interesting to say the least. Many of the coaches share thought provoking stories of their teams, leagues and opponents. While I always enjoy working with the coaches and kids, what I enjoy most is going out to dinner with the coaches after we get done and just listening to these stories, sharing a few laughs and learning about the nuances of how things are done in their neck of the woods. The trip I’m speaking of and the story you are about to hear made me laugh so hard I think the waitress and patrons thought I was having some kind of attack or maybe had choked on some food and needed the Hymlich Maneuver.A fairly recent trip showed me the extent youth football coaches will go to put a winner on the football field. I’ve been coaching youth football for about 15 years and coached in 3 different organizations in 3 different towns in 7 diff

      Ruined Pants, Ruined Shoes.
There are days when India is very frustrating. Today was such a day.I was really excited when I went to the tailor several weeks ago to pick up my new Salwar Kameez sets. My favorite set was one that had white pants with pretty blue embroidery pleats down the sides of both pant legs. I was very disappointed when I put on the pants and they didn't fit. All the other pieces fit perfectly. It's not like popping into a store to return or exchange an item of clothing. This process is much more involved. I went back to the tailor with pants in hand and explained they didn't fit at all. He remeasured me and remeasured the pants, and looked at me like it was my fault, not his. If it were my fault, I would've brought back ALL the pairs of pants. He said he could fix them by using a different white material for the part around the hips but it wouldn't necessarily match. I figured that would be fine because it would be covered by the kameez anyhow. He told me the date the pants would

Thank you very much Tesco.net. Rather than do something productive to help alleviate the stress of no Internet and shout at a poor excuse of a technician down the phone, I booted up my SNES emulator, and played the game I downloaded a few nights ago, Super Mario All Stars. Specifically, Super Mario Brothers 3. This game was the holy grail of my childhood, the game that was worth 3 games to swap, and I used to go to my mates houses who had Nintendo’s and watch them play, I was that in love with it. Eventually, I got a NES quite late on in the product’s lifespan, and I always rated Super Mario Brothers 3 the best of the games, the sheer brilliance of the level design (Fire Mario melted Ice in Ice Land, making fire flowers useful, rather than pointless compared to a Flying

Mike Wieringo talks about Bart Allen's death, and how comics came to be ruined by stunts and edicts
I'm glad to see that Wieringo, co-creator of Impulse along with Mark Waid, is speaking out and lamenting the death of Bart Allen, and also talking about how comics were ruined by Image Comics for starters (Via Newsarama blog):I’ve had many conversations with creator friends of mine about the pendulum swing that happened in the wake of the IMAGE explosion back in the early 1990’s. The sort of ‘we don’t need no stinking writers’ attitude of the IMAGE founders resulted in what were nicely drawn comics with little story, for the most part. They became commodities and not comic books with good stories to go with the flashy drawings. The other major companies, in response, tried to emulate the initial massive success IMAGE had by doing similar types of books with crazy cover gimmicks thrown in for good measure… and the quality of the entire industry, for the most part, suffered. It drove many long-time fans away. In the aftermath of that sales bloodbath, the creative pendulum sw

      Another Childhood Memory Ruined
flangracneig pgoramian Over the weekend, I headed to Maplin and made a few impulse purchases. One of which was this beauty. This is my new PC controller. Basically, I’m sick of playing my old school arcade games with a keyboard, so I thought I’d go for this orgasm with a USB cable. I feel I must explain at this point, emulation takes a whole new level with a joypad. Without it emulation is a mild diversion, to relive past days. With one it becomes serious nostalgia fun. I’ll be honest, I haven’t been excited about video games for about 10 years, I am now. I mentioned in my last post that I played Super Metroid for ages. Well, I also played (and completed) Streets of Rage 2. This is not just a one night thing, I’ve been trying to find games from my childhood, and then play them. One such game was a fighting game me and my mate played when we were kids. It was like a space fighting game in the style of Street Fighter 2, and we loved it. One thing was that I

      Day almost ruined
I went there, paid a pretty hefty sum as cab fare, found the place, only to see it was closed for some kind of holiday. I got mad, real mad, but am not sure at whom. Arthur warned me, Mom had suggested I find out before I left. So I suppose I am to blame. But I feel awful. Even though the day started on a bad note, on the 20-minute cab ride to get the cursed forms, I made up mind to get back, do some serious studying. But the minute I saw the place shut, I started making plans to divert myself. Call Bridget and have lunch with her? Spend sometime in the coffee shop? Buy some goodies to take home? Get the pics for the application taken?   But I did none of the above, I came home, had lunch which I had painstakingly prepared before leaving, cursed the maid who hasn't showed since two days and now am watching an old ER episode. Maybe I'll get some studying done after allÂ…     Remains to be seenÂ…

      Christmas Ruined By Christians
Just when I get a little holiday optimism, something comes along to shatter it. No, it wasn't getting merry Christmased by my doctor yesterday. It wasn't the minor annoyance of everything closing down this time of year. It wasn't even the increasingly over-the-top decorations in my neighborhood. Instead, it was two news items I'll share with you in this post.First, I ran across this story about elementary school children writing letters to Santa. Sounds pretty innocent until you read it and hear about the Christian mother who decided to raise a stink after being told that it was not appropriate for her to change the assignment and have her daughter write a letter to Jesus instead. How dare this school attempt to keep Jee-zuhs out of the classroom! How dare they prevent a parent from modifying work assigned by a teacher! Here is what the mother said in her interview with the Times Record News:You'd rather have them write a letter to someone who is not real rather than let my daugh

Convicted Terrorist Whines: "My future is ruined."
Can you believe the balls on this jackass?German Court Gives Moroccan Max for 9/11HAMBURG, Germany (Jan. 8) - A Moroccan convicted as an accessory to murder in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks was sentenced Monday to the maximum 15 years in prison, minutes after telling the son of a woman killed that day "my future is ruined."Just before Monday's verdict, the 32-year-old defendant spoke with an American whose mother died on board one of the planes that crashed into the World Trade Center.Dominic Puopolo Jr., a co-plaintiff in the case, earlier joined prosecutors in calling for the maximum penalty, urging the judges to consider the "human and emotional cost" of the 2001 attacks. When the court granted El Motassadeq a final chance to speak, the slightly built, bearded man turned to Puopolo to say, "I understand your suffering. ... The same thing is being done to me, my kids, my parents, my family - my future is ruined.""You have a chance to rebuild your life and be back with your family. Othe

      The year is ruined already
Does that sound melodramatic? Silly? Do you assume that I'm upset and spouting nonsense? That I'm a drama queen? What if I tell you that I'm a mature and level-headed adult? What if I tell you that I'm speaking totally dispassionately? What if I tell you that I NEVER make sweeping statements without an inarguable reason? What if I tell you that I just found out that my mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer? In the flat, factual tone that people use to discuss issues of deep personal meaning with strangers, she told me what everyone else who knows her has known for WEEKS; that in December a lump came out just below her collarbone, that at 1st she thought it was another of the "harmless fatty tumors" (she couldn't remember the proper name for them, but I'm fairly sure from her description that they're lipomas) that she's apparently been getting lots of for at least a half dozen years and never mentioned to me, but then it suddenly began to grow rapidly, and she went

The Web site ruined my trip!
I am a big proponent for booking your travel online and I stopped using travel agents years ago. But, I also spend 12 hours a day on the internet between work and my various hobbies so I am very familiar with how things work on the internet. I create internet sites so I think like [...]

      Has Topps ruined Finest?
I was dying for a couple of boxes of 2008 Topps Finest, so much so that I had my money saved up for an entire case before my car was stolen. Well, as it turns out...losing my car might have been the best thing because Topps has included autographs of ...

      Has Makelele ruined Chelsea’s plans?
The sports pages are brimming with gloriously over-the-top stories (is there a big match on or something?), The Sun have a headline that simply says: “BLUNATIC” whilst the Daily Mail bellows: “MAD MAK: Cole injury doubt after ‘red card’ tackle by team-mate in training” The headlines are very melodramatic, but all you have to do is look at [...]

      Storm Davis ruined my childhood
I am on hour number 6 of Operation Commons Box Rescue. I am almost sick of baseball cards now and it doesn't help that my Marlins are going to lose to Barry Zito tonight. While looking through cards A-M one card snuck in somehow and brought back a painful memory ...
