How. G. A. Y. Where do you start? From the Christmas jumpers - hand-knitted by momma Wainwright, if you please - to Rufus and his camp ineptitude in front of Martha Stewart. This is grand television. Cut to 8.15 for the double entendre by Rufus that goes straight over Martha's head... or does it? More likely, she squishes that train of thought because she ain't having no homo filth on her show! Rufus & Chaka Khan - Master Jam [1979]1979 must have been a busy year for producer Quincy Jones. In that year, three albums that bore his production were released: George Benson's "Give Me the Night," Michael Jackson's "Off the Wall," and this offering from Rufus and Chaka Khan. "Master Jam" is nowhere near a classic, but it does feature some really irresistible jams. The kickoff song "Do You

Rufus as the surprising cover star of (the not gay) Esquire UK January edition. This is the subscriber's edition. Wot, no coverlines? Go here to see the witty news stand version. His thoughts on pop music after discussing the craft with Neil Tennant: "I think a lot of pop music is based on foundations that have already been built... they're all very strong, whether it's disco or R&B or whatever. But it's like building a ruin on a ruin. There's no height to it".On the current tour with his his unfeasibly large band: "I'm taking a tremendous loss. Which is fine. It's very old school. It's my Ziggy Stardust tour! Thank god I have the ability to do solo shows to make up the difference". Interestingly enough, he has learned about adapting shows to suit overheads from his parents: "They were very popular then disco came in and it was like the plague. They had to survive. They had to downsize quickly and fast... and successfully" The whole piece is a bit bland for a cover feature. Mayb

Over the summer we blogged about JazzDoubleBass.com, a new project started by Tyrone Bishop. This site features forums, interviews, and other resources for the jazz bassist. The Contrabass Conversations podcasts has a dedicated forum at this site as well, so check it out if you get a chance and chat with other jazz bassists around the world. This very cool project has just officially launched with a great series of videos recorded in Ireland with jazz giant Rufus Reid. Tom Hill interviews Rufus about his new recordings, bass setup, tips for up-and-coming bassists, and much more. Check out the first part of the series here: By the way, did you know that Rufus went to Northwestern University in Evanston (bass blog HQ)? He played for a jazz festival when I was in college. I was the bassist for the top jazz band, and he played a series of his own tunes as soloist, which was a real blast. He was one of the most kind and gracious people I hav

Rufus Wainwright is an incredibly talented guy who seems like hes from another era or, possibly, another planet. That is a large part of his appeal--he is, in a sense, untouchable, larger than life, entirely his own being. And his June 8 concert at the Gramercy Theatre, the third in a four-night series, made it clear that there is nobody quite like him in show business today.
Rufus Waignwright is notorious for bad behavior. From an insatiable meth habit (since kicked-Go Rufus!) to unashamed man-whoring, he makes no apologies. But he doesn't have to. In a recent interview in Radar magazine, he discusses how awesome and god-like he is and you know what? With amazingly gorgeous songs and an angelic lullaby voice, he is right (italics added for emphasis). He is so damn good in fact, that he can do whatever the fuck he wants. This includes wearing a dress and heels, like he did last night at New York's Gramercy Theater, to play a packed house.Check out those gams. All I have to say is "Damn, he is one sexy bitch!!!"
Rufus Wainwright - Release The Stars Release Date: May 15, 2007Label: GeffenI have to admit that I’ve never quite grasped Wainwright’s unique appeal before, even though I’ve always appreciated what he’s done in the past. Luckily, with Release The Stars, he’s crafted an album that manages to be more succinct and accessible without abandoning the over-the-top theatrics that makes him so charmingly unique.Release The Stars is a pointed work. A superb example of this focus is the scathing first single, Going To A Town, which lampoons the current state of America through a gorgeous, melancholy melody. It’s understated for Wainwright, yet constructed with such simplicity that its message is powerfully unforgettable. To my ears, it’s the pinnacle of his career so far. Elsewhere, Wainwright and producing partner Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys lace the music (which is the usual theatrical cabaret pop you’d expect) with trumpets, harps, strings, and even electric guitars on Be

Rufus Wainwright has always crafted elaborate albums, but Release the Stars is surely his most ambitious yet. Its a dedication to his mother, includes a full-fledged orchestra and even features the words of Andrew Lloyd Webber. This grandiose approach isnt the least bit surprising though, considering Wainwrights recent recreation of Judy Garlands 1961 Carnegie Hall concert.
To take the name of the showbiz column in The Sun quite literally, how 'Bizarre' that Rufus Wainwright was on the front cover of this once homophobic rag. It was a banner ad for a huge Rufus interview inside where he said nothing new but did talk in depth about being in love WITH ANOTHER MAN. This wouldn't have happened even five years ago. Anyhoo, checking that the interview might be on The Sun website, there, better still, was a podcast. Get to it HERE. I've heard Rufus speak before, but as it was on TV in the excellent South Bank Show doc, there were visuals to distract. Hearing Rufus talk in your headphones is very different; it attunes you to just how camp he is! I love it! Kiki: the original cabaret terroristIn fact, at times, I thought he sounded a lot like Kiki from Kiki & Herb. His friend, Justin Bond's Martini-soaked lounge singer character comes to mind at about 3:39 with a slurry piece about taking long walks in the park with his boyfriend and other rrrrealllly, rrrr
This is cinematic, well-educated, highly sophisticated music. He really doesn't disappoint us. With one word 'Awesome'. The son of folk music luminaries Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, Rufus comes with an overwhelming record. "Release The Stars" will melt our hearts. After S/T (1998) debut and the following "Poses" (2001), with "Release The Stars" he's again mellow. The record will be

I hope you're wearing clean underwear today, because Coachella is about to rock your pants off!!!Okay, not really.Rufus WainwrightWho he is: Sensitive Canadian-American singer/songwriter... so that means he gets both a hyphen and a slash, which is a lot of damn punctuation. What he sounds like: I would like to see the Canadian side come out more, and hear beautiful odes he has penned to snowshoes, Gordie Howe and the city of Moose Jaw, but alas, 'tis not to be.Rufus Wainwright - Going To A Town What I think: He qualifies for both Canuck-achella AND MellowChella, so how's about that! Bonus points for being a white guy named Rufus. ----------------------Gillian WelchWho she is: Folk singer gal from Nashville. Plays a mean banjo.
