The Internet search engine giant, Google is developing a new web-publishing platform which similar to Wikipedia, called as Knol. The new Internet service is designed to allow anyone to create a page on any topic and the visitors can submit comments, questions, additional contents and rate articles if the primary author allows, aiming to encourage people who know a particular subject to write an authoritative article about it."The key idea behind the Knol project is to highlight authors. Books have authors' names right on the cover, news articles have bylines, scientific articles always have authors — but somehow the web evolved without a strong standard to keep authors names highlighted," according to the official Google blog. Wikipedia has to be improve on its services and popularity now because otherwise, a Google new service dubbed ‘Knol’ will be able to shift the Wikipedia visitors to its regular visitors. The announcement of Knol will heat the competition between two Internet giants, the Google corporation and Wikipedia. Knol comes from the word knowledge, and Google hopes that Knol can cover contents from a diverse range of topics, from sciences to entertainment. However, in contrast to the non-profit Wikipedia, authors in Knol can put up advertisements on their work and earn money from them. Google’s Knol is currently in test phase, but it is revealed that Knol will be available to Internet users worldwide in the next coming months.

Last night on the official Google blog, Udi Manber, vice president of engineering, announced that Google is testing a publishing platform called Knol.
It’s being compared to Wikipedia and Mahalo. While it’s a somewhat different take on knowledge collection, these comparisons are apt.
From what we know so far, Knol is a wiki-like platform. Authors can create topics, and there are tools to interlink articles and content, but as Manber says, an article, or “knol,” is “just a Web page.” Where it differs from a wiki is its focus on the author. All knols will highlight who wrote them.
Knol should make it easy to create nicely formatted reference pages.
