Business Financing Through Home Equity Smart Move Or Too Risky
Are you willing to risk your home to finance your business? One way to infuse your business or startup business concern with cash is by tapping the equity in your home. Is it a smart move? The answer depends on a number of different factors.Financing a BusinessOne of the biggest stumbling blocks for a new business owner is acquiring financing for the early costs of establishing the business. Unless you have an established banking relationship or collateral to put down, few banks or lenders are willing to make a loan without a personal guarantee of some sort. It makes sense for a homeowner to turn to their largest asset as collateral. A home equity loan or line of credit is often the easiest way for a new business owner to acquire a sum of money that can be used to fund t

Free Exchange raises some interesting points about drop-out rates in American colleges and the impact of parents on a child's education. A series of papers by Ralph and Todd Stinebrickner are cited as evidence that a "lack of academic preparation and limited encouragement from family members" have more impact on drop-out rates than "credit constraints". Thus, the role of parents may better explain the "epidemic levels" of "college attrition" that traditional explanations centred around finance. The issue of drop-outs from university should be considered salient in Britain. Many students do not complete their university education, despite government attempts to keep drop-out rates low. #82. Investing Is Risky?
Find Out The Difference Between Calculated Risk And Gambling. One Of Them Can Make You Very Wealthy.I have a friend who likes to ask me to try out new concept that I am not familiar in. For example, he would ask me to invest in land banking and said, "Go for it, you are a risk taker!""See, you are mistaken. I am not a gambler." I said.He continued, "Didn't say you are a gambler, just saying you are a risk taker. That's all."I went on to explain. In investing, rule number one is never lose your money. Never jump into an investment without knowing how it works and the nitty gritty details. It's akin to putting your money in Sports Toto or Magnum 4D (a form of numbers betting in Malaysia). You never know if you are going to win.Gambling is also a loser's game. Your chance to win is very slim.

Secured Loans Maybe A Risky Last Resort
Secured Loans - Maybe A Risky Last ResortBy: James CopperA secured loan, or a loan where the borrowers home is held as collateral, should usually be used as a last resort when all other options have been ruled out. The reason a secured loan should usually be reserved as a final option is because a secured loan is a large risk for the borrower. In the case that a secured loan is unable to be repaid according to schedule, the borrower will lose his or her home. There are quite a few borrowing options that can be pursued before a secured loan is considered. Instead of a secured loan, borrowers would be well advised to first seek an unsecured loan. An unsecured loan may be more difficult to receive, because a secured loan is much less risky for the lending institution. However, an unsecured loa

A recent Nielsen survey showed that 46 per cent of people were concerned or very concerned about internet banking security. On the one hand, that is good. People should always have a close interest in how their money is being looked after. What worries me is that reporting of such figures without background or context feeds a misconception. The reality is that internet banking is incredibly safe.Westpac facilitates millions of online banking transactions a month. We have no recorded breaches of our internal security systems. It is not uncommon for us to have whole months where no customers fall victim to online fraud.

Home Equity - Don’t Spend it on Risky Investments
The housing market has exploded in the last five years, and homeowners are finding that the equity in their homes is greater than it has ever been. The equity in a home is the difference between the market value of the home and the amount still owed on it. As home prices increase, so does the equity for those who own their homes. In parts of California, home values have tripled during the last five years, and homeowners are doing increasingly risky things with their newfound “wealth.” Anyone considering borrowing against their home’s equity should carefully consider the possible pitfalls of doing so.Traditionally, most home equity lending was done for purposes of home additions or remodels. These have been considered low-risk loans, as the house is collateral for a loan that improves

Fed Approves Plan to Curb Risky Lending
By EDMUND L. ANDREWS and DAVID STOUT (From The New York Times)Published: December 18, 2007WASHINGTON — The Federal Reserve moved Tuesday to impose tough new restrictions meant to curb unfair and deceptive home-lending practices and prevent a recurrence of this year's meltdown in subprime mortgages.By a 5-to-0 vote, the Fed approved a plan that would tighten provisions meant to protect borrowers and apply them to a far larger share of home loans — whether from banks, mortgage companies or other lenders — than under current regulations. The proposed rules underscore the more assertive role the Fed is now prepared to take in regulating lending, in a big shift from the central bank's approach in the past.In general, the rules are meant to deter unscrupulous lenders from persuading people that they can afford loans that ought to be out of their reach. By extension, the rules are also intended to keep would-be buyers from deceiving themselves about the debt burdens they can shoulder

Risky Relievers
There are many ways to run a baseball team. For teams with large payrolls, it's not all that complicated. The Yankees can seemingly just throw money at all their problems. The Angels have apparently decided to start signing a CF coming off a career year every offseason. The majority of teams, however, have to be a little more discriminant with their spending. Some are better at this than others. This becomes particularly clear with contracts given to relievers; it is quite obvious that different teams have very different philosophies regarding this.In 2007, the Reds had a $68.9MM payroll. The Indians were at $61.6MM (according to USA Today). Both signed free-agent relievers last week, but that's pretty much where the similarities end.Cincinnati made a big splash, giving $46 million over four years to Francisco Cordero. Cordero is coming off an excellent year, with a 2.98 ERA, 86 Ks and 18 BBs in 63.3 innings. He was one of the top free agents available, and his salary reflect

I also live across the street from someone with a long criminal record. He thinks nothing of breaking into peoples houses and taking things to pawn when he needs money. I’m always home now so I’m not as worried about it. There are plenty of things you can do that can put you or your home in danger such as boating or meowing the lawn. Sometimes making a few minor changes in the way you do things can make all of the difference. There are lots of blogs out there that offer tips on home safety like Home Security Blog.com.

Cisneros Says GOP’s Immigration Stance Is Risky
Former San Antonio Mayor and HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros is speaking out about the Republican’s stance on immigration, which he says is risky for the party, but good for Democrats: They risk driving Hispanic voters into Democrats’ arms for years to come, he said. Mr. Cisneros, in an interview before he spoke to the Hispanic Scholarship Consortium in Austin, said that though the Republicans use immigration to fire up their base, they may wind up deeply angering Hispanics. “Those who have simply focused on security at the border and not on the other humane aspects” of the immigration issue offend Hispanics, he said. Mr. Cisneros predicted Hispanic voters would respond by voting more heavily for Democrats, as has happened in California since the mid-1990s. There, he said, many Hispanic voters have memories of Republican Gov. Pete Wilson’s scary TV ads about immigration, which he used to successfully revive his re-election bid in 1994. While hooked up to an fMRI machine that detects activity in different parts of the brain, the women looked at 256 photos of male faces.Using a computer morphing program, researchers altered the photos to make the male faces look more or less masculine. The women were also given sexual risk information on the men that included their number of sexual partners and their typical condom-use patterns. After viewing the faces and the information, the women were asked to rate how likely they were to have sex with the man in each photo. But in this study, Rupp and colleagues weren't as much interested in who the women said they'd have sex with as in what happened inside their heads.Around the time of ovulation, when the women we

This is the title that we have heard for the last few years. Get your money outside the US and into some international equities. This was a hard thing to do for the Average Joe Investor, until ETFs came around. ETFs have been tracking indices to now creating their own style of investments and tracking a very sophisticated lot of stocks. Gary Gordon gives a few examples of where you may want to put your money, even though there was a large correction due to the global credit crisis, and many shares seen large drawdowns. One that he likes is

Risky Business / Faith is Safe
First off: Thank you so much to everyone for all of the comments, emails, text messages, and phone calls on my birthday! I love you guys so much! It was much appreciated. I thoroughly enjoyed my weekend, just chillin and relaxing. It was very much needed. Sunday’s church sermon stood out for me this weekend. It was all about taking risks and stepping out on faith. It came just in time, as I’m making some very risky decisions lately when it comes to business and work and grad school. I’ve had some questions on my heart that I just don’t really know how to answer… The main points of the sermon were: Risk is impossible to avoid. Risk is always present in the presence of ignorance. Risk must be embraced for the right reasons. mmm. what to do. what to do. I haven’t quite figured it out yet…but I know that God’s making moves… I Love New York 2 is coming on tonight. And I THINK I might be in class. *sigh* God, I hope those people don

CROCS CLOGS AND ESCALATORS MAY BE RISKY MIX
Reports of child injuries after shoes get stuck in moving stairwaysAt rail stations and shopping malls around the world, reports are popping up of people, particularly young children, getting their toes caught in escalators. The one common theme seems to be the clunky soft-soled clogs known by the name of the most popular brand, Crocs. One of the nation’s largest subway systems — the Washington Metro — has even posted ads warning riders about wearing such shoes on its moving stairways. The ads feature a photo of a crocodile, though they don’t mention Crocs by name.Four-year-old Rory McDermott got a Croc-clad foot caught in an escalator last month at a mall in northern Virginia. His mother managed to yank him free, but the nail on his big toe was almost completely ripped off, causing heavy bleeding.Link to complete story: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20837380/~Sandy G.

Pre-IPO investing - Too Risky For Private Clients?
Pre-IPO investing is one of the themes in the market today. There are, in London, many, many firms dedicated to the sales of shares in this area. It is often said that pre-ipo investing should be avoided as anything worth buying does not need to be sold. I am not sure that is true. VC firm, Bessemer Venture Partners, have on thier web site an excellent page which details their 'anti-portfolio'.

You better get to pregame warm-ups early if you have any hope of seeing your favorite stars in uniform. Coaches just want to iron out roster spots Nos. 40-53 and start game-planning for Week 1. They will have you believe that training camp and preseason play is of paramount importance, but let’s be real: jobs are won in May and June as much as they are in August more…

FF Today Risky Running Backs
FF Today has updated a great running back rankings page that denotes RB's who pose a potential fantasy football risk. The list is as follows:Larry JohnsonClinton PortisWarrick DunnKevin JonesI think it is safe to assume that LJ will eventually be removed from this list because he has signed a long term deal with the KC Chiefs had has reported to camp.I agree that Portis, Dunn, and Jones are risks due to injuries. This also makes their backups potentially very valuable..........although still risky.Portis is expected to share more carries this year with Ladell Betts and Warrick Dunn will continue to lose ground to the explosive Jerious Norwood.Kevin Jones is sharing a backfield with ex-Broncos speedster Tatum Bell and the big back T.J. Duckett. If I were to bet on a backup with the highest upside, I would look at Falcons RB Jerious Norwood.....although the absence of Michael Vick may have a huge overall effect on the Falcons offense.Ladell Betts had a good season last year and is probab

Risky, Arsene, Very Risky
I am very perplexed and unhappy at Johann Dourou going to Brum till January, when presumably he will be back to cover for Kolo. If we discount the new guy Nordtveit (and you have to as he has only just turned 17), I think we are worryingly short of centreback cover. We now only have Philip Senderos as proper backup for Kolo and Gallas (now that Connolly has gone to Colchester). No problem if they all stay injury and discipline free, but its taking one hell of a risk in my opinion. Sure we have guys who can play at centre back in an emergency - Gilberto, Sagna, even Justin Hoyte - but the key word is ‘emergency'. We hardly want to break up the flanks and midfield if things are going well when we normally have such good cover. Perhaps Johann particularly asked for more first team action - and it will do him no end of good playing every week in the Birmingham side - but I still think it's a bit risky, especially as our new captain hasn't the bes

Briefs: Morgan makes risky return to field
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Dan Morgan strapped on his extra-padded helmet, adjusted his special mouthpiece and ran onto the field knowing some people think he’s making a horrible decision. The Carolina Panthers’ linebacker is trying to return from at least the fifth concussion of his career, one that forced him to miss the final 15 games last season. There are disturbing stories of the long-term effects of multiple blows to the head, from memory loss to depression to dementia. But more…

Using eSnailer to send physical mails may be risky
Despite the seemingly indispensability of emails, there is huge section of our population, which still cannot access it and are still dependent upon the paper form of communications.A new servicee eSnailer seemingly promises to bridge that divide. It allows to send you a letter in the form of paper in an envelope to anyone. The sender has to just fill in the receipient' and sender's name & address and the message in a form provided on their website. And the beutiful part is that this is absolutely free. But what is the catch.Yeah, you guessed it right, there is surely a catch. In fact before sending, you are asked to sign up at least two of the available offers from their promoters. It was also bearable, but the saddest part is that eSnailer seems to be having an affiliation with the website MyInsiderDeals, which is rated "very spammy" by McAfee SiteAdvisor. [After signing up at MyInsiderDeals, the SiteAdvisor team received 240 e-mails per week.]Another important point to be noted on

Are Markets Really Risky?
There was an American comedian who, whenever someone would ask him, "How's your wife?" would reply, "Compared to what"? The answer to today's big question is the same. Is equity investing too risky for the retail investors? Well, compared to what? The crucial issue is not whether the investor is retail or wholesale, but whether the investments are for the long- or the short-term and what kind of skills and presence of mind does he or she bring to the actual choice of investments. Practically speaking, risk in the stock markets is a function of time. The longer the timeframe over which you invest, the lower the risk. Today, all this talk of the 'retail investors' losing money in the markets appears to be about individuals who normally do not invest in the markets but have perhaps come into the markets in recent months hoping for some quick gains. There are many such investors and it's possible that they will lose money. Nothing should be done about this. Such 'investors', retai

Buying a Foreclosure Doesn’t Have to Be Difficult or Risky
A client of mine closed on a foreclosure unit this past Friday. It was the smoothest transaction that I’ve ever had. I wish all of my deals were like that one. Many people believe that buying a foreclosure can be risky. When a bank lists a recently foreclosed property with a traditional real estate agent, this just isn’t true. In most cases, the bank will clear any problems with the title and an inspection period is afforded to the buyer. My client was given 7 days to inspect the property that he had under contract which was more than enough time. We had a property inspector in the unit within two days after having a fully executed contract. A foreclosure that is purchased on the steps of the county courthouse, however, is just the opposite. In many cases the title can be clouded and the buyer is not allowed to conduct a full inspection. My client’s appraisal came in 30% higher than what he paid. As a result he didn’t have any problems obtaining financi

When China Isn’t Risky Enough: Investing In Colombia
BusinessWeek reporter Roben Farzad recently traveled to Columbia to determine whether or not the “third tier” (globally speaking) economy there was ready for mainstream foreign direct investment and an “equity culture”. From an investment perspective, Columbia is the next frontier after the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China). Its stock market has increased 14-fold since 2001 with a still modest total capitalization of $59 billion. The one-time murder capital of the world and former home to infamous drug cartel Pablo Escobar, Medellín (pop 2.4mm) is reemerging as the commercial hub of the nation. The president, Alvaro Uribe, unlike most South American leftist leaders, sits right of center and has an approval rating above 60% in his now second term in office. His government is very much interested in attracting growth through foreign investment and understands that this can only be achieved by driving the paramilitary drug lords out of the urban

Risky Flirt
Risky flirtMy dear flat mate has been doing the same thing as me since she’s in London. Basically it’s taking a year off to discover the pleasures of the big smoke and enjoy as much as we can before getting all serious, career driven and sucked into the system for the next few decades… So she just got a new job in a wicked bar in Camden, a few minutes away from our place. The decoration is old fashioned styled, with a rustic old wood almost a bit filthy atmosphere that makes it even better. An antiseptic artificially clean perfect bar just doesn’t really work for me, I don’t see that much character in it. So anyway, now that she’s working in this nice little pub I’ve decided that it would become one of my new locals (although I don’t want to be disloyal to my number one, which is located on the same street further down). So armed with a few friends and some excitement, I went for a night down there to have a few drinks and also thinking: “Don’t get too wasted, don

The Jakarta index is booming, but Indonesia remains risky
Indonesia's benchmark stockmarket index has hit record highs recently, buoyed by a combination of beneficial factors that include strong economic growth, falling interest rates, optimism about forthcoming company results and the approval of a new investment law. However, like many emerging markets, Indonesia remains vulnerable to changes in investors' appetite for risk, especially with valuations currently higher than in most other markets in the region. Nonetheless, the prospect of accelerating economic growth and a big pick-up in capital spending in 2007 suggest that, barring major shocks, investors will remain bullish for the time being. On April 17th the Jakarta Stock Exchange (JSX) Composite Index closed at 1,965.4, a fresh all-time high, and there is increasing optimism that it will breach the 2,000 level soon. The Economist Intelligence Unit expects interest rates to fall further during 2007, lowering borrowing costs both for businesses and consumers. Blog Review: Life is Risky
I was intrigued by the title. That's why I clicked on the link to "Life is Risky." I wanted to see what kind of posts I would find contained in a blog with that title. Discussions of mountain climbing? Hang gliding? Bungee jumping? My brain conjured up all sorts of images of risky undertakings.I am relieved to tell you that there is nothing that physically dramatic going on there. Rather, the author, Susan Driggers, explains the name this way:I decided that a new direction was in order, something more cutting edge, something more… alive, so I decided on not only a new direction but a new domain name to help focus my intent. Basically I have decided that I need to take more risks. More risks in what I am willing to accomplish online. More risks in what I am willing to accomplish offline.I can’t promise that this blog will make either of us rich (you the reader, me the admin) but I can promise that it will explore areas which might improve us in other ways. Video Racing Games Linked to Risky Road Behavior
A study finds out people who play crash-and-bang car-racing video and computer games may be more aggressive, risky drivers in the real world. A series of studies found a consistent relationship between dangerous driving in the virtual world of video screens and aggressive feelings and actions behind the real wheel, German psychologists report. The researchers also noted that children start playing such games at age 10, on average, potentially creating future generations of dangerous drivers. >>

The Toll On Teens With Risky Behavior
Why Teen Depression Is Widespread Researchers have long recognized that risky behavior and depression are linked for adolescents; prevailing theories assumed that depressed teens turned to drugs and sex for self-medication. Now there is solid evidence that teen girls who experiment with risky behaviors (i.e., sex and drugs) are more vulnerable to depression and that teen boys who engage in binge drinking and heavy marijuana use are prone to depression. In an article published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, five authors from different departments (Psychology, Pediatrics, Maternal and Child Health, Research and Evaluation, and Internal Medicine) at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) explored whether "gender-specific patterns of substance use and sexual behavior precede and predict depression or vice versa" The data for the UNC-CH study came from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health — well-known for the large sample size
