These exams are not like the exams lawyers, doctors, and accountants have to take. They are not even like the exams mail carriers have to take.Ordination exams do not show how intelligent you are or how

Seven years have passed and the situation in 2008 is remarkable worse than it was in 2001. Ordinarily, when nations invade another [...]

      Rethink and Re-evaluate
I had a set back this past week. A BIG ONE in my book. I hurt myself with my workout AND the scale climbed up a few pounds. This didn’t really do much to me physically but emotionally, it killed me. I beat myself up. In a bad way. I am going to share with you readers, a few things from my experience book with regard to my set back now, in hopes that maybe someone will learn something from me. I began my journey in October. A pretty drastic journey actually. It was after much research and thought that I made these changes in my life, but I made drastic changes. I became a vegetarian after being a meat and potatoes gal for over 35 years. My lifestyle changes were not easy. Sure, I feel great. But some days, it is all that I can do to keep from woofing down a whopper with cheese. I crave

Tiny cars may force cities to rethink parking
Smart cars, the teeny tiny two-passenger vehicles that have long attracted the attention of Americans visiting Europe, are starting to show up on the streets of the Bay Area, where they’re likely to smash head-on into parking regulations designed for larger cars.Just 8-feet, 8-inches long - about 3 feet shorter than the Mini Cooper - Smart cars can squeeze into just about any parking space. That’s sure to make them a hit in San Francisco. But whether they can wedge themselves into a system of parking laws designed for much larger vehicles is going to be the bigger challenge. In Europe, where more than 800,000 of the little cars have sold in the past decade, drivers often park perpendicularly - with their noses or tails to the curb - between parallel-parked larger cars. But in C

      Charter advocates rethink school reform
This from the Detroit News:Die-hard charter school advocates are rethinking their approach to school reform and the ability of competition and charter schools alone to transform American urban schools and their awful student achievement rates. It's a surprising change and it's hardly common, particularly at the grassroots level.Still, in recent weeks a number of the country's leading pro-charter think-tanks and leaders have published pieces, announced policies or made statements indicating their reconsideration -- and it likely will have an enormous impact on policymaking and Republican politics. From New York City to Detroit to Atlanta, charter advocates have echoed writer Sol Stern, an important conservative voice on education reform, when he wrote in a recent edition of the City Journal:

Why Americans might have to rethink that trip to Europe; the dollar isn’t done falling
It is amazing that, despite the falling dollar and concomitant rising prices, many people still refuse to admit that the falling dollar will affect them in any meaningful way; or that it could get a lot worse. Most people don’t understand the long-term fundamental pressures that will invariably beat the dollar down, so their reasoning [...]

      SOS - Rethink the shark
Over dinner this week Andrew decided discussing a recent shark attack, or nibble as he put it, would be a good pre-dinner topic - typical ; ) Anyways, the conversation, as they tend to do over good wine, went from shark attacks to responsible sushi eating to “did you know?” questions like - 'more people die from chairs than shark attacks every year?' So on that note here’s a blast from the past from The Save our Seas Foundation: They also did: Last year 791 people died from faulty toasters – 4 by sharks and Last year 358 people were killed by kites – 4 by sharks. SOS cleverly crafted this campaign to have a common narrative which then cuts to one of three final scenes and in doing so creating “new” campaigns within one production budget! Nice one – I love a bargain ; ) Comment on "SOS - Rethink the shark"

How the 10/20/30 Rule Made Me Rethink GIS Presentations
Anyone who has had to present on a GIS topic (or GIS-related topic) is aware of the challenges that are inherent in effectively disseminating both technical and non-technical information to a diverse audience. After recently attending a GIS conference, I was reminded of why I strive to abide by Guy Kawasaki’s 10/20/30 rule for Power Point presentations. The 10/20/30 rule goes as follows: a PowerPoint presentation should have ten slides, last no more than twenty minutes, and contain no font smaller than thirty points. Before I delve into the rest of this post, I should provide some context by stating that Guy Kawasaki is a venture capitalist who has to listen to hundreds of business plan pitches by aspiring entrepreneurs. In his blog post about the 10/20/30 rule, Guy points out that this rule is applicable for any presentation to reach agreement. Thus, in the context of GIS presentations, where the bulk of these presentations are aimed more at sharing information, I would po

Pope Reissues Ten Commandments After Rethink
Pope Reissues Ten Commandments After Rethink The Vatican has issued a brand new set of the ten commandments after a "rethink" over the messages contained on the slabs of stone Moses carefully dragged down the mountain after speaking to God.The Pope has stated in the past that he thought that the "old commandments" as they will now become known were not applicable to today's Catholics. He is also insistent that God drove a red Alpha Romeo as described in the lost Bible of St Pulcus and as depicted in the contemporary film of the time Ben Hur. Accordingly a seperate set of commandments is available for motorists and can be downloaded from the Vatican website.Pope Ratzlinger has revised the famous commandments as:Thou shalt not kill and subsequently get away with it.Thou shalt not drive past another motorist in trouble unless their car is better than yours.Thou shalt not covet thy neighbours teenage mini-skirted daughter (or son).Thou shalt not steal unless thou art high enough up in gov

      SA Chrometco rethink on refinery
This could be a reason for the downturn in the price we have seen along with the results not being as good as expected(source:http://congoreading.blogspot.com/2007/06/le-poker-de-gertler.html) MetalsPlace Minerals company Chrometco appears to have been compelled to move its planned copper and cobalt refinery from SA to the Democratic Republic of Congo, as that country takes an ever-harder line on minerals beneficiation. The loss of jobs and investment to SA is an irony, as the South African government also has a policy insisting on local beneficiation of raw materials. In early March, the governor of Congo's Katanga province closed the border post to Zambia for three weeks to trucks carrying unrefined copper and cobalt ore, on the grounds that Congolese laws prohibited the export of ore that could be processed locally. The move trapped about 400 laden trucks. Mining companies said the Congo was blocking more than 5000 ton s a day of unrefined copper and cobalt due to be processed in

Rethink the way we use FCAT
Today's St. Pete Times story noted that Pinellas Superintendent Clayton Wilcox said he'd put the FCAT test blunder to good use by studying whether the state's third-grade retention policy is working. What does that mean? Here's more: Chances are, some of last year's third-graders got a free pass to fourth grade because their FCAT reading scores were artificially inflated. Under the state's policy, kids who don't score above the bottom level on the FCAT are, more often that not, held back. Then they're given additional help. Wilcox said the district will conduct an "individual child study" to determine whether the students who should have been retained last year did well as fourth graders this year. If large numbers of them did, Wilcox said he'll approach state officials about reconsidering the way the FCAT is used in retention decisions. "Let's use it as it was intended to be used," he said, "as one tool amongst many." - Tom Tobin, Pinellas County education reporter

IRAN: Germany, EU Urges Belligerent Iran to Rethink Nuclear Program
The German presidency of the EU on Thursday urged Iran to rethink its nuclear program after the UN atomic watchdog warned that Tehran could acquire nuclear weapons within three to eight years. "The presidency urgently appeals to Iran to reconsider its policy and to comply with the demands of the international community," the EU presidency said in statement. It said the European Union has taken note of the latest report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Iran with "great concern." In the report, IAEA director Mohamed ElBaradei accused Iran of failing to cooperate with his agency's inspectors and said that he agreed with US assessments that Iran could acquire nuclear weapons within the next decade. "In other words three to eight years from now," he said. The EU said the report confirmed that Iran has flouted two recent UN resolutions demanding that the Islamic republic suspend uranium enrichment, which is at the heart of its standoff with the West. Will Colorado Rethink Trading Helton?
Will the Colorado Rockies rethink trading Todd Helton? According to the Denver Post, Helton has told the Rockies that he will veto any future trades that the Rockies bring to him. So will the Rockies reconsider there demands and trade Helton to the Red Sox? I still think that this deal will be revisited and now with Helton’s demands, I can see the Rockies definitely opening up the channels of negotiation again. Maybe now they will backdown from their demands of a top prospect in order to get a deal done. Either way, I think I would be happy. Without Helton, the 2007 Red Sox are still a great team. Saturn Rethinks “Rethink American”
I recently visited the Saturn website to check on an Astra factoid. I was surprised to discover that the brand has dropped the "American" part of their "Rethink American" advertising strapline. It's now just "Rethink," with various bits added as and when needed (e.g. Rethink Hybrids). The idea of a generic prefix, followed by a campaign-specific suffix, is not new. Mercedes dropped it's "Engineered like no other car in the world" shtick a long while ago, in favor of a revolving series of "FILL IN THE BLANK like no other car in the world" pronouncements. Nissan has been shifting this and that for some time now, from Expectations to, uh, I can't remember. Which is the problem. While a flexible strapline certainly helps the marketing mavens, like any brand extension, a one-size-doesn't-fit-all marketing solution weakens the impact of the original, highly-focused brand promise. In fact, none of these automakers keep their strapline f
