The largest known oil shale deposits in the world are in the Green River Formation in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. Present U.S. demand for petroleum is about 20 million barrels per day. If oil shale could be used to meet a quarter of that demand, 800 billion barrels of recoverable resources would last for more than 400 years.

Do we underestimate the Crude reserves? This week oil prices escalated to a record $139 per barrel, but that may partly be because the amount of available oil in known reserves has been significantly underestimated. Black gold might not be as scarce as we thought.

Arsenal moved clear of Chelsea in the Reserve League South table with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Griffin Park on Monday night. Kieran Gibbs, returning from injury, scored the only goal of the game to make it three wins out of five for the young Gunners.

Both teams started tentatively, but it was Arsenal who got the earliest sniff of goal on six minutes. Nacer Barazite fed Rui Fonte but the striker's shot from the corner of the box lacked venom and was saved at the keeper's near post.
With 12 minutes gone the Gunners had another sight of goal. Abu Ogogo, playing in an advanced role in midfield dispossessed Patrick van Aanholt, and fed Rui Fonte. Fonte returned the favour and when Ogogo cut in from t

The struggle for Iraq's oil flares up as Kurds open doors to foreign investors. At the end of a rough dirt track, on a sun-baked hillock once the domain of scorpions and snakes, squats an odd settlement of caravans, generators and drilling rigs that is at the heart of the battle for Iraq's oil."Welcome to Texas, Kurdistan," said Karim Ali, as his taxi bounced to the gates of the Taq Taq oilfields, on the undulating plains of Koi Sanjaq, some 80 miles south-east of Irbil. "Soon we'll all have big hats and cigars like them," he said, nodding at a group of oil workers passing by on a pickup truck.Like many Iraqis, Karim appeared convinced that the country's vast reserves of crude, the bedrock of its economy, were about to be siphoned off by major US oil corporations. The presence of "foreigners" here at Taq Taq merely cemented his certainty. With the Bush administration pressing the Iraqi government to pass a new hydrocarbons law, there are widely voiced assumptions that it will bulldoz
Economic planners worry that the export-fueled flood of cash surging through China's economy is driving dangerously fast investment in stocks, real estate and other assets. The money-supply surge strains the central bank's ability to contain pressure for prices to rise. The bank, China's equivalent of the U.S. Federal Reserve, drains billions of dollars a month from the economy through bond sales, piling up reserves that have topped $1.3 trillion. Still, deposits at Chinese commercial banks top $4 trillion, and are growing by tens of billions of dollars a month, leaving plenty of money for new lending.

Total signed a long-awaited deal Friday to develop the giant Shtokman gas field with Gazprom that will allow it to book part of the Arctic field's lucrative reserves. Total CEO Christophe de Margerie and Gazprom deputy CEO Alexander Ananenkov signed a 25-year deal to develop the first phase of Shtokman, a field set to supply huge amounts of gas to Europe and North America when it comes on line within the next decade. Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller, who remains ill with a kidney ailment, did not attend the signing at Gazprom headquarters, but announced the surprise deal in a statement Thursday. Total, which had been seeking entry into Shtokman for years, will take a 25 percent stake in the field's operating company. Gazprom has reserved the right to sell a further 24 percent to one or two of the companies still hoping to join the project, but will maintain a 51 percent controlling stake. It will also hold full control of license holder Sevmorneftegaz and "be the owner of the whole amount o
Total has all but secured reserves from Gazprom’s giant Shtokman gas field in the eastern Barents Sea, after a signing ceremony in Moscow Friday clinched a 25-year development deal, with options. “It's a technicality, but yes, we will be able to book reserves,” Reuters quoted Total boss Christophe de Margerie as saying. Gazprom and Total will set up a “special purpose vehicle” to organize the design, financing, construction and operation of the Shtokman Phase 1 infrastructure. The entity will own Shtokman infrastructure for 25 years from field commissioning. Once Phase 1 is over, Total will transfer its 25 percent share in the project company to Gazprom, ostensibly in return for reserves. Gazprom owns 100 percent of Shtokman license holder OOO Sevmorneftegaz and will have sole marketing rights to gas in the 3.7-trillion-cubic-metre field. Shtokman Phase 1 will produce 23.7 billion cubic metres of natural gas a year. Deliveries of pipeline gas are expected to start in 2
Venezuela continues negotiations with major oil companies that have withdrawn from the nation in the face of President Hugo Chavez's nationalization of the industry, but will not back down from insistence on Venezuelan control, its ambassador to the United States said in Houston today. "We want partnerships with private companies, but with that rule." Alvarez also said he does not believe the United States will attempt to confiscate Venezuelan assets in this country, including five refineries, as compensation for oil company assets in Venezuela. He hopes his country and the companies involved will reach agreement. Last month, Houston-based ConocoPhillips and Irving-based Exxon Mobil refused to accept new working terms for their Venezuelan operations. Vietnam has seen record increases in foreign currency reserves in the first half of 2007, due to rising indirect investment in the stock market and a stabilised domestic exchange rate.State Bank governor Le Duc Thuy said the increases in foreign currency reserves had tripled those of 2006 in the first five months of this year.“The central bank of Vietnam will continue to invest in foreign currencies in the next few months to meet the target level equal to 20 weeks of imports,” said Thuy.According to the IMF, Vietnam’s total foreign currency reserves were equal to 12 weeks of imports at the end of last year, reaching the minimum international standard for foreign currency reserves. The reserve increase helps stabilise the exchange rate between the Vietnamese dong and the US dollar with a fluctuation rate of around one per cent by the end of this year. While the Vietnamese dong fell against the US dollar at the end of 2006 and in the beginning of this year, the interbank nominal eff

From Inside Bay AreaECONOMISTS DON'T LIKE to admit to being stunned by anything, even in unpredictable Asia. UBSAG's Jonathan Anderson couldn't seem to help himself. The cause of the Hong Kong-based economist's dismay: China's currency reserves rose $1 million a minute in the first quarter."This is more than just a jump," Anderson said. "The magnitude and the abruptness of this acceleration are simply stunning."After average reserve growth of about $20 billion a month in 2006, February and March this year had increases of almost $50 billion — and $136 billion for the quarter. The total is now $1.2 trillion. "Just when we had convinced ourselves that China's 2007 releases had nothing left to shock us, the first quarter FX reserve numbers came in," Anderson said. While all this raises many questions, three are probably foremost on investors' minds. One, why are reserves increasing so fast? Two, what in the world will China do with that money? Three, can China continue avoiding big

After the rather doom and gloom piece the last entry, I found this gem of an article in MEN (Manchester Evening News). It gives a rather nice round up of the players who are on loan. It's probably a puff piece, but still a good read for those of us who are unable to follow the progress of our future stars.Worthy mention of Johnny Evans, Giuseppi Rossi, Ben Foster and Lee Martin, who I think are all in contention of breaking the first team based on what limited footage I've caught on them the last couple of years.
Quite frankly, I don't know why I bothered to even stay up to watch this game. I'm not too sure why I bother with the reserve games at all. I've caught the last couple of reserve games as well and quite honestly I don't think we're going to promote anyone from the youth squads for sometime. To be fair, half the actual reserve squad has been out on loan, so we're playing mostly the under-18s. Still the quality just isn't there. Last week we got burnt 3-0 by a pretty strong Sheffield United side. Today we edged out a strong Everton side 1-0. With the exception of Chris Eagles, who is already in the first team, no one stood out.You can understand the frustration Brian McClair feels running the academy. I got this link in my mail yesterday and found it to be a bloody good read. It's from a source I seldom visit, The Herald (Scotland). It's recommended reading.
