      Rescuing Books in Flooded Iowa
Andrea Melendez / The Register Beth Westlake, a University of Iowa graduate student, passes a book up the stairs to another volunteer. From Nietzsche's controversial works on the concept of supermen to volumes on Judaism and Islam, thousands of books were salvaged from the university's Main Library basement by lines of hundreds of professors, students and other volunteers. Amidst the natural

      Rescuing Pets
"Pet experts say a cocoa mulch can pose a serious health risk to pets. This type of mulch is made of the husks of the cocoa bean. Local landscapers said it has become popular in northeast Ohio recently because of its aroma. But that aroma can also reportedly attract dogs and cats. If a pet consumes a large amount of mulch it can cause them serious digestive problems, according to the

Enabling & Rescuing vs Tough Love
I would like to share this article written by Robert Burney. This author did a very good job.. Tough love is tough on both sides. But if you truly love the person you have to let them learn the hard way even if that creates a permanent wedge between you. To enable them [...]

      Rescuing the Britney Spears image
With all the negative attention that Britney Spears gets, is it a good time to be marketing her Believe fragrance? It’s what we’ve alluded to in our beauty article online today.    We hope Ms Spears will get well—and that the paparazzi lay off her a little. Unfortunately, the Britney economy is worth hundreds of millions [...]

Rescuing Collectible Sun Equipment with Debin Linux
A while back, we bought a Sun Ultra 5 workstation with a winning bid of about $20.00 or so. It has a 360 MHz SPARC processor, 128 Meg of RAM, and an eight gigabyte harddrive. Most computers from Ebay are sold without operating systems, and this machine was no exception. Installing an operating system on Sun equipment isn't hard, once you know how to do it.

      Rescuing Ferrets
I had no idea how many ferrets needed rescuing. "If you're surprised to learn that ferrets need rescuing, consider this: There are 1.9 million ferrets in the United States, according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. And though the number is tiny compared to the 74.8 million dogs and 90 million cats kept as pets, ferrets face many of the challenges of their more popular

Greenspan On Recession, Stagflation, And Rescuing Homeowners
This morning, former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan appeared on the ABC program “This Week” and talked with host George Stephanopoulos about the risks of recession and stagflation, and what could be done, if anything, to prevent more homeowners from losing their residences. On the probability of an economic recession in the United States: Well, that the probabilities of a recession have moved up to close to 50 percent — whether it’s above or below is really extraordinarily difficult to tell. I think that’s correct. On the prospects for stagflation in the U.S.: Well, I’m most concerned about it… and the evidence is clearly there in rising export prices coming out of China. It’s coming out — it’s showing up in a slowed rate of productivity growth in the United States and elsewhere, and we are beginning to get not stagflation, but the early symptoms of it. The former head of the Federal Reserve also discussed the current housing crisis in the United States, th

      Rescuing A House On Fire!
I tripped several times as I walked along this path to explore the old but majestic house, which stood amidst the hills carpeted in green. It was now ruined with its beautiful white stones falling down. I imagined how grand and splendid it would have been some years back and it would surely be a treat to the eyes to look at it then! But it was now all dilapidated and unoccupied. Wild flowers grew in the crumbling walls. A wild plum tree grew straight out of the floor where had there once been the garden ground. Lizards scuttled over the stones while a melodious cuckoo sat on the empty window and sang its heart out. My family was visiting the hill side to spend our vacations. I was taking my usual morning walk when I discovered this house. Filled with curiosity and inquisitiveness, I decided to explore it. It looked a bit strange among the dainty blue bells and beautiful prim-roses that grew near the hills and oh! yes, a host of golden daffodils swaying in the breeze was in sig

      abstracted flower or rescuing disasters
images copyright: Vivien BlackburnI came across a disastrous watercolour flower abstraction when I was sorting through some paperwork and sketchbooks and stopped to work on it with coloured pencils and try to pull it together. It could now be the basis for a large canvas, playing with fluid paint, glazing and line - or of course a large watercolour/mixed media.I do like mixing media for the bigger range of marks available.Another thing on the 'to do' list - more watercolour/mixed media work. and ..... played with in Photoshop

      Rescuing Thomas the Train
"I hope these pictures don't end up on the BLOG!", bellowed my dh as he was swatting at a balloon with a ceiling fan cleaner taped to a flexible tape-measure. How on earth could I resist it now? Just look at these pictures! I replied with, "Oh, yeah...It's going on the BLOG." This particular Thomas balloon has been at the top of our 2-story ceiling since Austin's birthday (2/3). I say "this particular" because we have had countless balloons on the ceiling. In fact, he understands the balloon concept so well, he holds onto them for dear life now as we leave the store. He also puts his hand on his head if he has a ball cap on in the slighted wind because he fears it will "go up in sky Mommy?" [Everything is a question these days and they usually start or end with 'Mommy' or 'Daddy'.]Daddy [Clif] was too lazy tired bull-headed fatigued from his recent trade show to go to the basement to get the tall ladder. The pictures really tell the story. It must be added that Clif is not an en

      The karma of rescuing
Click here to register for the top-secret new blog service!! Last Saturday, I heard a BANG on the kitchen window; despite my having hung so many suncatchers on it that it barely lets in any light, the birds still fly into the bare spots pretty frequently, so this didn't alarm me at 1st... until I looked up from the computer to see a little tweetie lying motionless on the air conditioner. I lunged to the sliding glass door to see if he was moving; usually they're just stunned and fly away after a few minutes, but sometimes they don't recover before it gets dark and have to be put up in a tree so they don't spend the night on the ground (at least until the cats show up). This bird did something I'd never seen before; he slowly rolled over onto his back with his feet in the air. Shrieking in dismay, and ignoring my husband's admonition that he was a goner, I yanked open the door, dashed out and tenderly scooped the tweet up; I saw no injuries or blood, neither his head nor

      rescuing scary Christmas tins::tutorial
The Christmas tag project was a bit of a favorite, so in the middle of last night's spray painting (without proper ventilation!) I decided that I needed to take pictures of this one, too.An explanation: one of my stepbrothers is getting a very cool tshirt for Christmas (hooray Threadless $10 sales!) but I wanted to make the presentation a bit special. For some reason I started fiddling about with a tin I had stuck in my "random stuff" storage, and decided that if the hideous red and green candies deisgn could be covered, it would be the perfect size to stash a tshirt, and later to store random boyish things. I decided on the skull motif because it's easy to do and cannot be construed as feminine at all.To start, I painted the tin metallic silver all over. Note my exquisite painting setup: I've discovered that trash bags are more flexible for covering surfaces than newspaper. You have to be careful, though, that it doesn't "bubble up" around the bottom edge of whatever you're paint
