      Montana: Rejection
On Friday, the Associated Press reported on 45-year old Barry Beach, who was convicted of the 1979 killing of a 17-year old girl on Fort Peck Indian Reservation. The conviction was obtained as a result of a confession he gave to Louisiana authorities while in jail for an unrelated crime. Beach is serving a 100-year prison term without the possiblity of parole, but now argues that the confession was "coerced." As he puts it, "I was so scared I would have said anything to get away from them. I was 20 years old. I just wanted to get out of that interrogation room.” Beach also insists that there is testimony from others that connects a group of girls to the murder. For example, Carl Fourstar testified (at Beach's clemency hearing) that a former co-worker confessed that she had gotten away wi

      Gov. Rejection Coverage 2008
Predator Press [LOBO] As today marks the last day of my stuff being featured in the Clay Pigeon, I've decided that I need to do something educational. As the sole source of news for millions and millions of readers, I figure Predator Press owed it to the masses to weigh in finally on the up-and-coming elections. Now when I say "up-and-coming", I mean to say November. That's nine more months of this crap, and I'm already sick to death of it. I can't turn on the television without seeing one or more of those windbag pricks. This country has completely lost sight of any semblance of importance and priority. What about our own princess in distress Britney Spears? Or the charming romantic misadventures of our own beloved Ben Affleck? I can't even remember the last time I s

      The Rejection of Baby Jesus
I was not raised as a church goer. My father was Episcopalian, which I know because it was on his Air Force dog tags. My mother was Presbyterian. I don't know why I know this . . . Anyway, I was sent to Catholic schools, primarily for the education it offered in comparison to our public school system. Our class went to mass each week, and religion was definitely part of the curriculum. In fourth grade religion class we were studying the Holy Sacraments. The teacher asked my mother if I could be the shining baptism example, mom said sure, and poof! I'm a Catholic.Despite being the glowing example of sunshine, light, and the redemptive power of baby Jesus, I haven't gone to mass for years. I am repulsed by the church's reaction (or lack thereof) to the sexual abuse of children by i

Microsoft Calls Yahoo Rejection "Unfortunate," Pursues Hostile Takeover
Microsoft plans to take its bid for Yahoo directly to shareholdersIn the world of mergers, there are numerous levels of "hostility" which characterize bids. There are unilateral talks, mutually agreed upon, which are typically labeled as more germane, even if one company ends up absorbing the other. Then there are unsolicited bids, such as Microsoft's initial offer to Yahoo, which are often labeled as "partially hostile". On the far end of the spectrum are "fully hostile" bids, in which one company tries to bypass another company’s executive and board leadership by offering a buyout directly to shareholders. Among the famous examples of takeovers considered "hostile" was the HP and Compaq merger, which passed by a meager 51% margin in a shareholder vote.Having been rejected by Yahoo's

Rejection -- Artemis (short story, SF) -- by Analog SF
Well, I received a rejection from Analog SF today. There's some good news and some bad news. The bad news, obviously, is that it was rejected. The good news is that Mr. Schmidt actually left a comment on the rejection sheet (a form letter), which editors don't generally do, and especially not for a magazine that gets hundreds of submissions every month. The comment said:P.S.: Accurate punctuation is important, too. You should especially review format.Punctuation is something I'm really going to have to look at. I didn't realize I was using bad punctuation. Maybe I missed something, or maybe I made some error that didn't seem like an error, but to a seasoned editor like Mr. Schmidt, is a big no-no.As for format. I'm not 100% sure what he meant by that. I did follow the guidelines on the Analog website, which says:Manuscripts must be computer-printed or typed (check), double-spaced (check), on white paper (check), one side of the sheet only (check). The author's name an

The Rejection Collection Vol. 2: The Cream of the Crap One man’s garbage is another man’s gold, or in this case a rejection pile of discarded cartoons for the New Yorker can turn into a pile of dough. Seems the formula is working the first rejection book was quite funny to see what the editorial staff will accept to be published in their fine magazine. Call me uncultured or say what you may, but sometimes those cartoons chosen for the magazine are not that funny. Did I miss the boat, or subtlety a part of the fixture of picking the cartoons. I am pretty sure as demonstrated by the rejections they had over the years that something is awry because some of the rejected cartoons are gut-busters at best. Then again it depends on the day of selection by the editor. Each week The New Yorker receives more than five hundred submissions from its regular cartoonists, who are all vying for one of the twenty coveted spots in the magazine. So what happens to the 75 percen

      Feelings of Rejection Lingering
photo by Ben Larson I had another dream last night about being rejected. This seems to be an ongoing theme to my dreams almost every night. Usually it is being rejected by men, being back in high school and getting rejected by boys I thought were cute for example. But last night’s dream had a twist. My best friend in the dream was Sara Jessica Parker (probably because I really got into the Sex and the City series and considered the relationship the women on that show had as my ‘ideal’ kind of friendship). But at the end of the dream, she decided she didn’t want to be my friend anymore and it really hurt. This brought me back to some real traumatic events in my youth that I was thinking about in the shower. A lot of blog post ideas come to me in the shower. I had a best friend all growing up that lived right down the street. We were the kind of friends that are inseparable, weekly sleepovers, secret clubs, dressing alike, the works. Only in eighth grade she decided to trade

Rejection of Claims Denying Consensus on Climate Change
Conservatives who deny the scientific findings on climate change have been resorting to a number of specious arguments as to why the consensus of scientific thought should be ignored. Perhaps they realized that this was a losing tactic and over the last few weeks climate change denialists have been quoting bogus claims that there isn’t a scientific consensus. This claim is made by misrepresenting the literature, but many conservative bloggers have been eager to repeat this claim regardless of how weak the case is Wired reports that they have run into some difficulties getting this claim published, even by a publication with a history of skepticism on global warming: A paper claiming to show that the scientific consensus on climate change is not in fact a consensus has been rejected by the journal Energy & Environment, reports blogger Richard Littlemore. This clearly isn’t a case of believers circling the publication wagons against anyone who dares contradict them: the j

      Rejecting Rejection
photo by wuji9981It seems that when I am not having horrible nightmares of being shot and dying, I am having dreams of being rejected. The person(s) rejecting me vary from night to night, but the theme is always the same. I am usually back in high school confronting friends, or crushes, or old flames and all of them don't want to be around me for some reason. I spend the entire night pining for their acceptance and mourning over the lack of it. I feel sad, discouraged, and lonely all night long. According to Dream Moods, "To dream that you are being rejected, signifies a lack of self-worth and alienation of others."Another website about the symbolism of dreams says,"Rejection in a dream shows that the dreamer either is frustrated by non-acceptance or want to rid himself of certain feelings."This seems to go hand in hand with yesterday's post discussing Self-Esteem. Ok so I have already admitted that my self-esteem could use some work. But this is not some
