Wyatt was "willing" to pay oil surcharge, witness says|A former Iraqi oil company official, testifying in Oscar Wyatt's fraud and conspiracy trial, said he was in a meeting where the Houston oilman was haggling over how much of a surcharge he would pay to buy Iraqi crude. Wyatt, 83, is accused of funneling millions of dollars in illegal surcharges or kickbacks to Saddam Hussein's regime under the United Nations' oil-for-food program. Charged with fraud, conspiracy and violating U.S. sanctions, Wyatt could be sentenced to 74 years in prison if convicted on all counts. Wyatt contends all his dealings with the Iraqis were lawful. Mubdir Al-Khudhair, a former manager with Iraq's State Oil Marketing Organization, is the first witness since the trial started early this month whose testimony has tied Wyatt to surcharges. I won.It started several weeks ago. The driver's side window wouldn't go down (again), and I brought the car to the shop to be fixed. Having already replaced the motor on every other window in the car, I expected to pay a couple hundred dollars and be on my way. Naturally, I was wrong. An inspection of the VenJetta's inner workings revealed that there was over $1,000 worth of other things that needed to be fixed, or else I would die on the side of the road in the very near future.
