In the middle of December I have to demonstrate to 3rd Year Biophysics and Structural Biology students on differential centrifugation. Essentially you get a pig liver and spin it really fast until it separates into it’s components. Fun and games for all the family.
I generally approach these practicals with a mixture of trepidation that something is going to go wrong and we’ll look like idiots and a distinct feeling of impending boredom. As demonstrators, we’re seen as the all knowing founts of practical biological knowledge which couldn’t be further from the truth. We got together two weeks ago to go through the experiment we’ll be demonstrating and ended up getting it wrong! Things didn’t go completely tits up, but the results were “interesting”. We’re just hoping the students actually follow the protocol instead of our attitude of knowing better!

You’re trying to get a new account setup with a supplier and they’ve asked you for some credit references, what should you do?
The time to take care of it is before you’re in the heat of battle and need the credit references. Ideally, you have them lined up ahead of time.
The first step is to have a credit history built up with several suppliers. Develop a history of paying them on time and being consistent in your payment patterns. Hopefully, too, they’ll be both number transactions and total dollars that have some meat behind them, so it means much more. A credit references where there’s only been a couple of purchases for fairly small dollar amounts is pretty weak.
If it’s somewhere that is a recognizable name, that’s all the better. That company could have instant credibility with your particular supplier.

Most of us know that in most cases we’ll need to provide 2 references in our resume. Is this really necessary? First of all, let me emphasize to you that having references is necessary but it is not mandatory for you to put your references (or call it referees) in your resume. As a matter of fact, I would encourage you NOT to put them in your resume. The only circumstance where you should put them in your resume is that when you’re running out of idea where else to keep the contacts of your references.
The reason is simple; first, as much as we can, we want to be the first to know whenever an employer makes contact with your references. In certain countries, it is even illegal for employers to contact your referees before letting you know of their intention. I know employers will not like what I say. But to give us justice, we want the prospective employer to evaluate our own good self first before listening to someone else’s opinion about us.
