Hello everyone! I just wanted to Thank everyone! I have reached 600 readers since March 12 2008! I just wanted to take a moment to appreciate all of you out there who have made my blog what it is! I have also finally made google’s search engine!
Hello dear kids! Today I will tell you a short but very interesting fairy-tale about a disobedient girl who did not want to make her book reports for elementary school.
Once upon a time, a little girl called Susie was sitting at her classes. The new material that her teacher was explaining was devoted to writing [...]
A while ago I noted that San Francisco had put a ban on plastic grocery bags. Since then, many cities have followed suit, or at least have contemplated following suit.
The problem is that stores aren’t using the biodegradable starch based bags and instead are using paper bags - a big problem for tree lovers and [...]
I just wanted to offer folks participating in the challenge a gratis copy of African Psycho, by Alain Mabanckou. I attach some of the reviews…Any blogger participating the challenge can email me for a gratis copy and they do not need to ...
Well, this is the first I've ever done this on this blog, but I'm announcing there'll be a give away -- good one. What's the prize? A copy of MLB 08: The Show for the Sony Playstation III Console. I did a review on it, and the sponsor was kind enough to give five complimentary copies to give away to readers. The catch, there's none -- however, what I'd like you to do is tell me your favorite baseball story. It could be about the Orioles or anything encompassing the world of the sport -- just as long as it is about it.Anyhow, the story can be tender, heart-wrenching, funny, serious, or it could be even crude (to extent). Email me personally at mdguy2415@aol.com (I'll post your story on the blog), or you can leave a comment and send me a way to contact you.I'll have the contest running until n
First, let me apologize for leaving out part of Tuesday's Question yesterday and today. Today it's because I don't want it to appear to be duplicate content. And yesterday instead of asking When You Were A Child Who did You Want To Be When You Grew Up, I asked; Who Did You Want To Be When You Grew Up? I can't believe I didn't notice (that typo) and I'm sorry- although I know you all knew what I meant there is no excuse for sloppy grammar... And thats not all, Ferd C from Texas Medical Freak said that I made another mistake, but I'm not sure I did, and I think he may be kidding but he said; "Interesting question, "Who" did you want to be, not "what" did you want to be." You see, Who and What are interchangeable when it comes to poorly written questions. I wish he would have caugh
So let’s answer a few more…and I was going to do this tomorrow but Becki and Soliloquy were antsy… because their questions were answered in this one… and because I’m nice, I’ll do it today…
Soliloquy asks:
Being a new believer that found Jesus in the way you did, what advice do you have for believers who are timid in sharing their faith? What offended you? What didn’t offend you? What drew you?
Jesus is all over the internet, you know that don’t you? He works through the internet, oh yes he does. And I have to wonder… do you think that Jesus is a Mac or PC user?
Regardless, yes, it was through the internet that I found my Jesus. Ok, so he wasn’t lost, I just decided not to go looking for him… waiting for Him to come to
After the recent debacle I had with Chase credit cards I started thinking about the various credit cards I've had so far in my life. Starting out, there wasn't a one that was less than 20% interest, but as time went on, they dropped. Some quickly, some VERY slowly. Eventually though, I [...]
I haven’t done readers requests in a while because I haven’t had one good one that I think would take up an entire post. HOWEVER, I’ve had several small requests that I can wrap into one post. Inquisitive, interesting, intriguing and some even unusual…

Yaro has already kicked us off on this topic of how to find readers for a new blog but I thought I’d pull together a few ideas on the topic also (with a little overlap with Yaro’s ideas). These points come from a variety of older posts I’ve written on the topic - sort of a ‘best of’ kind of thing. I’ve updated some, others are straight extracts from things I’d said before and a few are new: 1. It takes time - It may not be what you want to hear, but it unless you’re a genius, extremely lucky or have an amazing new idea, it takes time to build a readership. So settle in for the long haul and muscle up some patience. 2. Content Content Content - I’ve said this over and over again so will keep it brief but unless you have ‘good’ content you’re unlike to build a rea

If you are blogging for a purpose it is not enough just to attract attention, we need things to happen as a consequence. That means at least providing the right content to the right people. As I have said many times before, while many people are looking for “traffic”, you can often be more successful with a smaller audience. One of the challenges we face when launching a new blog is what our theme or subject should be. What will attract a good audience for what we have to offer? The simple answer is to follow the diagram at the top of this page Find out what readers want to knowNarrow it down to what you can credibly provideProvide it??Profit It can be that simple, but to be truly successful, and to really stand out from the crowd, and actually achieve the goals you set out, you need

Dear Michelle,How should I handle it when someone leaves a nasty comment or writes something bad about my blog in one of their posts? What should I do?I get this question every so often but I talked rather extensively with Loralee at Loralee's Looney Tunes not too long ago so I'm paraphrasing her question--leaving out the not-so-pretty particulars. There are a couple of things to remember with a situation like this:1. People who are truly nasty cannot be swayed by your articulate, logical and highly intelligent responses. Even if you're much smarter and better looking than they are.2. Your words are permanent and they can come back to haunt you.Now one of the oddities of the mom blog niche--or to expand it to blogs by women in general and parenting blogs by dads too--is that people are u

If you are reading this, then you are literate, most likely computer literate as well. Most readers don’t really think about illiteracy. Once you learn to read, it’s not like you are going to forget how to do it again. Problem is that illiteracy abounds. In affluent Bucks County, PA over 60,000 residents are functionally illiterate. This is a county that claims to have 88.6% of it’s population with a high school diploma and 31.2% with a college degree. An inability to read is truly insidious. How can you possibly cope in today’s environment with out being able to read?Reading needs to be nurtured, fostered, encouraged and promoted. Reading is the keystone that holds the archway of education. How do you learn something new if you can’t read about it? If a love o
(I didn't know how I was going to live")This weeks Tuesday's Question was How long Have You Been Without Sleep, And What Were The Consequences?Because often a night without sleep can make your brain feel dreadful- totally fried- I haven't been sleeping much lately, so a fried egg felt like the perfect metaphor commonly used when one feels burnt out-Hence, in my Tuesday's Question post I give a few examples of consequences, (By the way, I apologize for use of the word consequence. I don't like it anymore-) you can get into when you haven't had enough sleep... and I posted some links of posts I've written about my after effects of insomnia- one of which I linked here because I couldn't find it when I was in the frying pan. And if it hadn't been for Sandee at Comedy Plus, I still
Today is seriously one of those days, and I mean THOSE days! I just feel bitchy and pissed and just grumpy...probably for no reason, but of course to me everything is a potential candidate for a reason!!! For starters it seems like its rained every weekend for the past month or so here in NYC! I'm starting to feel like I live in the UK or something! Ugh...I hate the rain and all the humidity. Not only because it totally makes you feel lazy but also because I cant ever do my hair how I want to. Rain and sleek hair don't mix! Another thing is that it seems like lately I'm always trying to find more hours in the day! I've been sooo busy and haven't had time for anything and it sucks! I don't even know where my day goes. Not to mention that the busy schedule and constant run-around is leaving

Do You Handwrite HTML? [Ask The Readers] Most web page authoring software like Dreamweaver—or even blog publishing systems like Blogger or WordPress—all come with WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) mode, which formats web content without exposing the HTML and CSS behind it. But even in 2008, lots of web authors turn off WYSIWYG and just hand-code their own markup—even at the NY Times. Mac news site TidBITS reports: The New York Times's design director Khoi Vinh noted in a recent reader Q&A segment on the Web site, "It's our preference to use a text editor, like HomeSite, TextPad or TextMate, to 'hand code' everything, rather than to use a wysiwyg (what you see is what you get) HTML and CSS authoring program, like Dreamweaver. We just find it yields better and f

What Apps Should You Never Install? [Ask The Readers] In a dated but still relevant post, technologist Anil Dash lists a bit of Windows software that no one needs to install these days, like WinZip and "sketchy codec packs." I'd add any software manufactured by AOL, Adobe Reader, and digital camera-specific photo software to that list. (You're better off with 7-Zip, Foxit Reader, Picasa, and Pidgin.) How about you? What bits of software do you uncover on your co-workers' and relatives' computers that should have never been there to begin with? Tell us in the comments. Yesterday was a short but great post thanks to three of my most loyal readers answers to the most recent of Tuesday's Question in awhile: What is the worst food You've Ever Tasted In Public? Plus, I created a Tuesday's Question image link to the comment page if you would like to read any of these bloggers past comments or yourself if you've ever commented to Tuesday's Question. All you have to do is copy the code and put it in your sidebar and it will link to the comments page, instead of having to search through archives to find the comment page. Also, your readers will be able to read your answers by clicking on the link from your blog. Yesterday, I believe I may have taken the long way around articulating the reason for the brag badge or Tuesday's Question image, so I saved that post
Alltop.com has been described by many as an online magazine rack. It is a place where average Internet users can find hundreds of blogs, view the 5 most recent posts and preview the first 2 paragraphs of articles. I'd like to thank Alltop founder Guy Kawasaki for including this blog in the Social Media section of the site - Thanks Guy!Most of us who are active bloggers or social media participants use a feedreader to stay updated and informed. The average Joe/Jane Doe doesn't understand or utilize this technology though - only 5.4% of Internet users take advantage of RSS, according to Daily Blog Tips.Alltop uses feeds to populate the site, and caching to optimize load time (otherwise, the gargantuan number of feeds would make loading it insane on any computer). So, you use a lot of online services, and you're all across the Web all the time. You write your blog with Blogger, host your online photo album with Flickr, keep yourself updated with the latest news on Digg, and watch all your favorite videos on Youtube. While you're doing all this, you hope to be able to update your blog readers with your latest activities, or in other words, you take the question "What are you doing?" and post your answer to that in your blog. So far you've been able to do so with Twitter, an online service that asks you just that: "What are you doing?." And then it lets you answer with a quick update that can't be more than 160 characters long.Don't you see anything wrong with that? Or haven't you ever considered it ridiculous to be logging in on Twitter every other mi

In addition to having submitted an essay for the inaugural issue, I'm also working on another section which will simply ask a question and list the responses of a few survivors. So, I need your help. Any responses are most welcomed! The questions are:While during and/or after treatment, did you incorporate a complimentary approach by doing exercises, such as yoga, meditation, massage therapy, or reiki, and if so, why? Were they helpful?Did you embrace any particular quote, motto, or verse for strength during treatment? If you wish, I can list your name or your answer can be anonymous. Just let me know in your response.Thank you.

The Minima template features only one definition for the background property, so if you change the color (or add a background image) this will affect the whole of the template, including the posts area and sidebars.Over the past few weeks, many people have emailed or commented who would like to know how to add a background image/change the main background color in Blogger's Minima template, while retaining a flat color for the posts and sidebar areas. So in this post, I'll explain how to achieve this.
How backgrounds work in the default Minima templateThe only style for a background property in the default (uncustomized) Minima template is for the main body section:

Teachers and parents both can play an important role in making the child a good reader. Research has shown that enjoying books with a child for even a few minutes a day can make a measurable difference in the acquisition of basic reading skills, and that everyday activities – such as a trip to the grocery store – can be turned into enjoyable learning experiences. These are 11 tips for parents can encourage the children to become good readers:1- Create appreciation of the written word Find time to read aloud with your child every day. Typically, parents play an important role in developing this skill by reading to children and showing how important reading is to their daily life. The first topic of the show (and the last as well) was my reaction to a post by Erin Kotecki (The Queen of Spain). called "So you want to talk to [...]
If you aren't a reader of Gather Little By Little I wrote a guest post for glblguy that he put up today. Feel free to head over to his blog and check out my article Why be frugal? If you are new to my blog, please consider subscribing to my feed and checking out some of my articles. I am currently in a series discussing why my family is committed to live debt free. I've also written about monkeys, ninjas, and what you can do with pennies. I enjoy tracking my spending and have some realistic but ambitious goals for 2008. Feel free to stay as long as you like. And remember - always be good, always stay clean, and always have fun.

It's probably obvious from my blog that I hold my family and home in high esteem. A home is the heart of your family, a place where you can return at the end of a long day to feel relaxed, safe and secure. You want it to look nice but you also want it to smell nice. Because I live in the upper Midwest where winter sometimes lasts up to 7 months, opening windows to let the fresh air in isn't a choice so after cooking a roast or bacon it's either smell the lingering aroma for a day or two or try to fight it off with candles and air fresheners.Tonight I had a chance to tell

How Would You Pack a Vacation into Just One Backpack? [Ask The Readers] The Zen Habits blog pulls together suggestions from its readers on how to travel very, very light to make vacations less stressful and more adventurous. But we turn now to you, dear reader, to ask: What bare necessities would you pack if you had to shove an entire vacation into a backpack? What gadgets and tools can you not stand to live without, and what items have you found unnecessary? Offer up some minimalist wisdom in the comments, and get inspired by your fellow readers if you're making a trip this weekend. Photo by ToastyKen.
Like Meebo Me, Google Talk now allows you to chat with people who may not have signed up for Google Talk or a Google Account. This is possible through a new Google Talk Chat Badge that bloggers can embed in their web pages to chat live with blog readers and other site visitors. It really doesn’t matter whether your readers have a Google Talk account or not - they can talk to you through the web page as long as you are signed into your GTalk account. When they visit your site, they’ll see a badge like the one on the right showing your online status (available, busy, offline) and, if you’re available, they can just click and start chatting. Chatback uses the web-based Google Talk Gadget so your visitors don’t need to download anything. It opens in a new windo
