Stopping the supply chain that rains terror on Pakistan
Fighting terror without Pakistan by Lisa Curtis: “The U.S. doesn’t really have the option of abandoning Pakistan. We rely on Pakistani air, land and sea space to supply critical fuel, vehicles and aircraft to support our 26,000 (soon to be 29,500) troops fighting in Afghanistan. The U.S. would find it extremely difficult to develop alternative supply lines for the war effort in Afghanistan.”

Why do worms go onto the sidewalk when it rains?
A: Most people assume that earthworms come to the surface during heavy rains to avoid drowning in their tunnels. In fact, worms can live totally submerged in water, so drowning isn’t the problem. But the rainwater that filters down through the ground contains very little oxygen, so the real reason earthworms come to the surface is to BREATHE. Do you think your fellow Americans enjoy watching everything they have worked hard for and their family heirlooms go down the drain? There were two major reasons why we lived in this neighborhood:1. We couldn't afford to live anywhere else. The neighborhoods that were safe from flooding were where the doctors and lawyers lived. Everyone else had to fend for themselves and take risks.2. I got out of bed and closed the windows to stop the splashes getting in. I went back to sleep amidst the sound of raindrops beating against window. I woke up at 8am with a now familiar sound of more raindrops beating against window, only heavier, stronger and faster. Well, we’re officially overwhelmed again. Last night, two older puppy-mill girls joined our program. These girls were rescued (along with something like 115 other dogs?) from a puppy mill in Missouri a couple of weeks ago. A number of groups around the country volunteered to take in some of the dogs. One of the wonderful [...]

Here is how they describe the movie: Everyone in Sarah Russell’s small hometown knows her story, but no one is talking about it. Sarah, the picture-perfect girl-next-door, took a job in Chicago thinking she could escape memories of a tragic accident she blames on herself. But when she receives some unsettling news, Sarah decides to return home and try to heal old wounds. As understanding and support come from unexpected sources, Sarah’s story becomes a journey toward forgiveness and hope for the future. You can also watch a preview of the movie by clicking on the link at the bottom of the synopsis. When it rains in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area…
When it rains in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area… Yes, it occasionally happens that we get rain showers in the Valley of the Sun. It is a rather rare occasion – rare enough – it is worth a mention on a couple of real estate blogs, and Jay and Jonathan have it covered. Today, I had to be at a home inspection in Apache Junction and found myself driving down the US 60 in a pretty heavy rain shower. It never ceases to amaze me how awful traffic is when it rains here and for some reason people drive like maniacs. I took this picture around 2:30 pm somewhere between Val Vista and Greenfield and this was not the only car which was on the road without any lights on. Yes, there is a car right in-front of me if you look closely (and no, I am not talking about the SUV in the HOV lane..). Now, I have heard it said that “nobody is really from here”, if that is true then where did everybody take their drivers-ed course? I am starting to believe that the saying is an urban Phoenix myth and

      It Never Rains...
I am still here, I'm just buried under a mountain of lecture notes and books. I don't actually attend campus, my lectures are held in various locations and towns. The upshot is that I have to have a meeting every morning before setting off just to make sure I am heading in the right direction.Friday morning was a classic example. I was up bright and early and headed off to my training for the day. It took me almost two hours to get there as the traffic had come to a virtual standstill, due to 'rain'. The world and his wife had decided to ditch public transport, (well we are into the season of soggy leaves on the rails and soaking wet bus seats), and take to the road. Anyway I digress, so I arrived a tad late.I managed to discreetly slide myself into the back of the room and position myself at a work station at the rear. For the next thirty minutes I got my head down and tried to catch up. It wasn't too difficult as it was systems training and already having used the systems for so

Heavy rains flood parts of New Orleans
Heavy rainsOriginally uploaded by NabityPhotos.According to YAHOO News, After more than 8 inches of rain drenched the city Monday, Mayor Ray Nagin shut City Hall early and schools across the city closed. Waist-high water in parts of eastern New Orleans soaked businesses, some of which had recently reopened after being damaged by Katrina in 2005. Waist-high water! How is that possible? Who could have thought such a thing could happen in a soup-bowl? When a drug addict nearly ODs on heroin you should never send him more heroin. Sending money to New Orleans only enables losers to continue living in an area not meant for human habitation. Anyone who rebuilds in New Orleans is an idiot. Anyone who donates money to New Orleans relief is a bigger idiot. That's it. Nothing much else to add. My previous posts on the stupidity of rebuilding New Orleans: Ray Nagin and the Bush FEMA Snow Job Let New Orleans sink into the Ocean Lots of water like chocolate The BBC bashes Bush

      When it rains, it pours
I’m currently in Vancouver, BC (CAN) on a business trip. When I left the house (I always have to qualify my answer when somebody asks me “How many dogs do you have now?”), we had 11 dogs in the house. Before I got to Vancouver, we had 13! In fairness, one of those 13 is a former rescue named Ritzy who’s at “Camp Sheltie” for a few days while her adoptive dad’s out of town. We have a new girl with us. Her name is Gigi and she’s a really sweet, cuddly, somewhat overweight sable and white girl who’s actually not too much over size. She was released to us by her family with the warning that she was not at all good with cats. Well, she’s been very nice to our cat, exhibiting no problems of any sort. She’s going to be very easy to place. In fact, Barbara’s taking her to another foster home (probably today), where we think she’s very likely to be adopted And, sadly, we have an earlier rescue back with us. Poor She

      "Rains" and "Glory"
Before the Rains has two press screenings scheduled for today, so hopefully a lot of reviews & co will follow. In the meantime, here are a couple of things to tide you over:Now Toronto (thanks for the tip, Tez!) has a mixed to positive review of the film: An affair between a married English plantation owner (Roache) and a married servant girl (Das) in colonial India highlights the sharp contrasts between the two cultures in this vivid historical drama. When the relationship is revealed, with startling and unexpected consequences for everyone involved, it is the Englishman’s right-hand man and confidante, TK (Rahul Bose), who finds himself most at odds with both his Indian heritage and his new colonial customs. While the story feels at once heartfelt and somewhat passionless, the film is beautifully shot, and in the end it’s the face of TK, a man trapped in a country at a crossroads, that stays with you. Andrew saw Before the Rains on Friday night and posted about it on his blog. *S

      Before the Rains
Before the Rains had its first public screening last night, and it will be shown again on Sunday afternoon.Director Santosh Sivan discusses the movie at rediff.com: Meanwhile, Sivan says his film Before The Rains 'explores the turmoil of a man who is torn between two worlds and the choice he makes to gain his own freedom and embrace his true identity.' In perhaps his most challenging role, Rahul Bose [Images] plays a worker in rural Kerala whose life begins to take a dramatic change when he gets to know that the married Englishman is having an affair with a servant. Sivan says characters in the films are 'more grey' than black and white. As for the lecherous Englishman (Linus Roache), who seduces a tribal woman (Nandita Das), Sivan says: 'I wanted the Englishman to be someone you could understand. Like Bill Clinton [Images].' The grey area in the film, Sivan told Screen International, comes when one of the workers (Bose), who belongs to the same community as Nandita's character,

Five Die, Five Missing After More Torrential Rains
Five people have been confirmed dead and another five are still missing after torrential rains hit northwest China’s Shaanxi Province on Thursday, a spokesman with the provincial flood control authority said. The downpours started at 8:00 AM on Wednesday. They have affected more than 308,000 people in 37 townships. Precipitation in 13 counties has exceeded 100 millimeters, the spokesman said. In Shaanxi province 18 rivers have flooded, inundating more than 3,100 houses and damaging 3,600 houses, he stated. More than 9,500 hectares of farmland have been flooded, totaling an estimated 64 million yuan (US$8.4 million) in economic losses. On Thursday morning intense downpours forced 37,000 people to flee from their homes in Yunxi, central China’s Hubei Province, sources with the local flood control headquarters said. Torrential rains lashed Yunxi County, located in northwestern Hubei, from 3:00 AM to 8:00 AM on Thursday. Precipitation reached 184.3 millimeters in certain areas,

      When it rains...
The clouds dragged themselves with a certain difficulty this morning, as if trying to make it home after a night of partying. They struggled to keep their tails above the treetops, slowly pulled west by the wind. It’s being storming all night and the morning didn’t look like morning at all, I told you as we drove through the wet sleepy city. Distant thunder broke the silence between us,

Good Vibes - It Never Rains, But It Pours
Ever had one of those days where everything goes… …right. True story. Weekly office meeting today was replaced with a training thingy at 1230p, so no morning meeting. So I slept in a bit longer than usual. On the way into the office for the tour my cell phone rang. A pleasant female voice asked me if I could just drop everything and come over right now as she had an opening that needed to be filled. Wow did she work me over good. Then with my shiny cleaned teeth I caught up with what remained of the tour. Gosh darn it I missed it all except one house. Oh cool, it’s the house I was asked to shoot photos in. Snappy snappy and done. Finally get to the office and free is my favorite pizza flavor. Uh oh. “Free Training” is code word for “You are trapped like guinea pigs in a sales pitch for a conference about referrals that costs $1495, but wait it’s $795, but wait it’s $695”. My cell phone rings at right before the crunch so I escape

      When it Rains
Well, unfortunately I’m still not going to say anything about what I’ve been hinting at this past little while, but lets just say that things got a bit more interesting these past few days with some things that happened. I’m really looking forward to sharing with people what the news is (actually several bits of news) but I can’t just yet. Tomorrow though I’ve got a top list to put up that should be pretty fun, and a nice design oriented article after that. I enjoyed writing them and hopefully they will go over well. This ties in partially with the direction I’m going to be heading with this blog in the near future, which is to say, less of this, and more of the interesting stuff. Anyway, wanted to give everyone an update and let you all know that a list will be showing up tomorrow, and honestly, who doesn’t love a list?

Top 5 Things to do in Singapore When it Rains
On my way home from a recent trip to India I stopped off for one day in Singapore, and, unfortunately, it happened to rain for half the day. Since Singapore is a mere 85 miles from the equator, a warm rainy day is not a rare occurrence. Did rain ruin my one day? Absolutely not. Will it ruin yours? Not if you heed my top 5 things to do in Singapore when it rains. Shop. Singapore is made for shopping. I count on my map around 30 malls on Orchard Road, with just about every kind of store, flip flops to couture. Even the window shopping and people watching are good if you aren’t going to take advantage of the tax-free shopping. And, the malls are so close that you can stay dry under their overhangs as you walk between (or pop across the street via the train station tunnels). Eat. Singapore has more great food than you can shake a stick at, much of it in the malls mentioned above. I know, I know, mall food does not sound good, but it in Singapore some of the best restaurants are in t
