Indian Railway goes Crazy-Adds Extra Berths
I happened to read a news article in Mint Newspaper which was lying on the floor inside Bangalore airport last night. While I have several other posts lined up I felt this news deserves some attention.Indian Railways has decided to increase the capacity of its train by around 12% by introducing an additional berth in the coaches. It is difficult to describe in words how they are planning to implement the same. Refer the image below for current seating layout and new layout. (S=Seat, B= Berth)In other words, a third berth will be introduced in between existing 2 berths on the side seats. This extra passenger will be sharing seats with either of the three passengers as shown in the diagram. Reportedly this idea of increasing the capacity has been accepted to generate more revenue by carrying more passengers in same number of trains, so that the need to increase ticket fare will be eliminated. This move is guaranteed to cause more and more inconvenience to the passengers who will have to s

However, they're still talking, according to Andy Skidmore of Network Rail. They're talking to Cheshire County Council, Crewe and Nantwich councillors, key organisations and contractors (Sentinel article here). The lot. I'm not suggesting that Network Rail are buying time, but it looks as though no firm decisions will be made regarding Crewe station's future until at least 2010. When you consider that the Crewe Rail Gateway plans were on the table at he start of 2007 that's a massive blow for those hoping to see the old rail interchange revamped along with the town's beautiful park and dilapidated town centre. As it stands, only the park is WIP. Just! That's disappointing and frustrating...

I just hope that this improves the quality of the ART DIRECTION. Now, how many of you guys/gals have seen THE TERMINAL by STEVEN SPEILBERG staring TOM HANKS? 99% of the movie is picturized in a huge airport terminal set. It has to be seen to believe it... I know that for a single scene, it would be foolish for any producer to erect such sets. But you gotta understand that the film studios like Ramoji Film City have standard sets for such brief scenes. But the problem is that these standard sets are being used as is and without any customization of any sort. So, when ever we see these stations or airports on screen, they all look alike. And moreover they always

Seven Days on a Train: How to Keep Busy on the Trans-Siberian Railway
Many a traveler has the ambition of crossing Russia on the Trans-Siberian railway. After devouring Paul Theroux’s railway travelogues and then falling in love with a glossy hardcover version of a TV series called Red Express, I knew that the week-long trip from Vladivostok to Moscow was the ultimate journey for me. Photo © Yelavich.com Shortly before my trip it dawned on me: the equivalent of seven full days on a train, even if it is broken up into two or three segments as a result of stopovers, is a really, really long time. In fact, I ended up spending around 200 hours on the train. The good news is that I loved every one of those 12,000 minutes, and here’s how you can too. (more…)

      Railway Museum

It is quite worth to have a look if you want to see something special, beside the major scenes in Hong Kong. The museum is originally an old railway station, it was built in 1913, about 100 year old now. However, the building is still in good condition since the railway company is keeping it in very high standard. Beside the old station building, you can see some old train cars, especially those in the "diesel era".

Dividend Analysis - Canadian National Railway Company (TSE:CNR)
Dividends Matter reader Rick has requested that we have a look at Canadian National Railway Company which trades on the TSE under the symbol CNR. With Warren Buffett himself investing in rail transportation (Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp), could this be our Canadian play? Let’s have a look. The company operates in eight Canadian provinces and 16 U.S. states. Market capitalization is $29.4B. The 5 year average ROIC is 9.9%. Return on equity had been very consistent for the first 7 years in the 12% range. The last 3 years have seen the ROE jump to 17%. Where next for some of Crewe's old railway buildings?
As with the Weston Road snap of the old railway control offices just over the Nantwich Road bridge, I need a bit of help with today's image. This fantastic sweep of brickwork can be found on Gresty Road as you head down to the YMCA building. You might have seen it if you travel to see Crewe Alexandra and use the club's council-run car park. This building is just past there. It's controlled by Unipart Rail Logistics these days but I suspect that a few rail-related functions have been performed here over the years. Quaint was the station platform (digital) clock above the doorway near the yellow "to let" sign. I wonder who acquired that, officially or otherwise? Still, with office space to fill I wonder if this could yet become more housing if new tenants cannot be found? Just along from here is Sir William Stanier Place, a housing development next to the YMCA and opposite the Claughton Avenue loop. The single-storey building doesn't really lend it to modern-day, two and three level

21 Railway Stations to Undergo Modernization
The Railway Board has given its nod to bring commercial development on the spaces available at 21 railways stations in major cities. A number of real estate companies are likely to make a beeline to upgrade, redevelop, and maintain the stations - creating space for the development of commercial ventures in the process. Reconstruction of the Delhi Railway Station would see the investment of whopping Rs 7,000 crore. The proposed project will fall under the public-private-partnership (PPP). Railways will give a presentation for the same on Saturday at chief secretaries’ conference, which is to be inaugurated by finance minister P Chidambaram. The 21 railway stations are likely to witness a major facelift with such exclusive developments, says an official while explaining the PPP initiative. All the assets were developed by private real estate firms and will go back to the Railways at the end of the concession period, he adds. The state would support the Railways in its presentation at t

The Interesting Problem Of A Railway Trolley - What Is Ethical And What Is Not?
More often than not, ethical issues - in financial areas or other walks of life - are not totally black-and-white. What’s ethical from my point of view, might be outrageous in your opinion and vice-a-versa. However, most of us generally tend to paint things with a broad brush and conveniently ignore all lines of thought that do not match our personal yardstick of what’s “ethical”. On this subject, here is some food for thought. There is this particular problem of a railway trolley which is pretty popular among people who study ethics and/or philosophy. It’s not a financial problem as such, but I am sure that such situations arise in the financial world where we (I am including myself here) are quick to judge other people about their ethical (or unethical) behavior. A problem like the one described below has the potential to make us think twice before we become too judgmental. There are numerous versions of the problem, but I will choose just two to make

      Construction on the AREX railway
Phase 1 of the AREX airport link between Gimpo and Incheon airports opened in March. Phase 2, which takes the line from Gimpo into Seoul Station, has been under construction for sometime now and I have been photographing what I can of the sites where work is occurring. At Gimpo airport the line is deep in tunnel, it heads north east and rises to the surface to cross the Han river on a new bridge. On the north bank of the river the next section of the bridge is being built, ready to be moved into position. The line curves to the east and descends into tunnel to go below Susaek bridge. The line is being built in a cut and cover tunnel running parallel to mainline railway to Susaek station. From Susaek to Gajwa railway station there is a short section being constructed using the "Tubular Roof and Trench Tunnelling method" it proclaims on a banner at the site entrance. At Gajwa I sneaked into the work site and got this photo of the 50m deep excavation. You can just see the guard on the far l

Lalu Prasad offers incentives for railway freight
New Delhi, May 10 (IANS) Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Thursday offered some major concessions and incentives in freight and loading of goods in railway wagons to manufacturers and traders of coal, cement, steel, fertilisers and food grains. Lalu Prasad made the announcement at the first meeting of the Railway-Industry Coordination Committee held at the Rail Museum here. Representatives of various trade and industry bodies attended the meeting, said a railway ministry spokesman. The railway minister announced indefinite postponement of a 10 percent surcharge proposed on the freight for rakes charged on two point rakes and mini rakes. Lalu Prasad acknowledged that very often it takes a long time for the Indian Railways to decide on applications seeking freight discount, adding that henceforth the railways would decide within two months from the date of application on all such demands. “If the decision has to be taken at the level of the Railway Board, a maximum of three months wil

Pitroda’s firm brings railway ticketing to mobiles
Chicago, April 28 (IANS) Two decades ago when Sam Pitroda introduced computerisation to railway ticketing, he was greeted with scepticism and derision by politicians and labour leaders. They thought he wanted to replace humans with machines. Now in 2007, the same Indian Railways has enthusiastically embraced Pitroda’s mobile transaction technology that enables ticketing directly from cell phones. His Oak Brook, Illinois-based technology company C-SAM’s mobile ticketing solution has just gone live for Indian Railways, which transports around five billion passengers a year. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corp Ltd (IRCTC), a division of Indian Railways which issues tickets to about 15 million passengers daily, now offers “IRCTCmobile” services to provide “cutting-edge technology” powered by C-SAM, improving customer convenience, security and flexibility. The IRCTCmobile launch has the potential to become the first mass market adoption of a tec

The Railway Age in Crewe (also known as the Heritage Centre)
The eldest plays footy on Saturday morning at Mablins Lane school, where Crewe Alex coaches come and attempt to mould some of the future stars. I usually take the youngest and watch but, as you can image, the little fella often gets bored as he won't be able to join in until he's five. So, today, having dropped the big un off, I headed into town and took the youngest to The Railway Age, otherwise known as the Heritage Centre. Now I've written about this before. On the couple of occasions I have visited it was a wholly disappointing experience. Since it was opened in 1987, by HM Queen, it's become a little tatty. And that's being kind to it. However, much to my delight, having chatted to Tim (he of the Equinoxe website) I discovered that plans are afoot to revamp the whole experience. And it should be, and enjoyable day out for families. Well, as detailed on here and in the local press, a fantastic addition to the centre has been made this year. One of the old TPO (travelling Post
