Why?Recently I got the iTunes Store receipt for some

I was listening to a commercial on XM the other day and what I heard did not surprise me in the least. It was a commercial for Oprah's radio show. There was a woman stating that once a person goes on the defense they are creating a situation of war.
This explains exactly how we got to the point of blaming the victim and giving the aggressor a pass. No I did not listen to the show this was on. I

Psychologists know you have to be careful when you go poking around the human mind because you're never sure what you'll find there. A number of psychological experiments over the years have yielded terrifying conclusions about the subjects. Oh, we're not talking about the occasional psychopath who turns up. No, we're talking about you. The experiments speak for themselves: #5. The Asch Conformity Experiment (1953) The Setup: Solomon Asch wanted to run a series of studies that would document the power of conformity, for the purpose of depressing everyone who would ever read the results. Subjects were told that they would be taking part in a vision test, along with a handful of people. The participants were then shown pictures, and individually asked to answer very simple a

“I know what to do, I just don't do it.” You may be among the thousands, maybe even millions of individuals, who utter these words constantly. You diet. You lose weight. And yet, here you sit, perhaps heavier than you've ever been. You're frustrated, you're confused, you're angry, maybe you are even hopeless. I would be, too, if I were you. Unfortunately so many who offer weight loss services are not completely versed in all aspects of obesity, compulsive eating and food addiction - particularly the psychology of weight loss, and more important, the psychology of weight control. In my almost 20 years of clinical work as a “psycho-nutritionist” (a term I coined for a small group of elite professionals who deals seamlessly with nutrition, weight control, food issues and the psychol

A single brain circuit mediates desire and dread according to a new study by the University of Michigan (U-M). Entering a noisy, new environment can instantly flip an emotion switch. "We experience desire and fear as psychological opposites. But from the brain's point of view they seem to share a common kernel that can be flexibly used for either one," said Kent Berridge, a psychology professor who oversees the University's Affective Neuroscience and Bio- psychology Lab. "This brain limbic circuit can retune its emotional functions from moment to moment, according to situation. "In some human disorders, this brain circuit might be more permanently retuned by pathology that unbalances the flexible circuit. For example, this same circuit might produce persistent desires in addiction, but fea

Researchers from Queen's University, Ontario, Canada have for the first time uncovered a possible biological link between severe psychological stress and an increased risk of developing breast cancer. The study, led by biochemist Christopher Mueller, found that the stress hormone hydrocortisone may repress the activity of a tumour-suppressing gene known as BRCA1 that is related to breast cancer. Previous population studies have shown a relationship between the experience of intense psychological stress, such as that associated with the loss of a spouse or loved one, and an elevation in breast cancer risk. However, this is the first time a breast specific biological basis for this link has been proposed. "The results of this particular study are very exciting," says Dr Mueller. "This provi

Psychological stress, but not depression, may increase the risk of stroke, according to a study published in the current issue of Neurology®. Previous studies have shown that stroke often leads to depression, but the evidence was mixed as to whether depression could lead to stroke. "Stroke is among the leading causes of long-term disability and death worldwide," said study author Paul Surtees, PhD, of the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. "Understanding the mechanisms by which overall emotional health may increase stroke risk may inform stroke prevention and help identify those at increased stroke risk." Researchers studied 20,627 people who had never suffered a stroke for an average of 8.5 years. Participants answered questions concerning their psychological distress, bas

As horrifying as it sounds, the Australian Defense Force has been practicing this method of emotionally pacifying its personnel. There have been breast augmentations, nose surgeries and tummy tucks recorded to have been performed on women in the defense on the grounds of psychological treatment. The Australian defense policy also allows male personnel to have a penile enhancement surgery on physical and psychological grounds. And from various reports, the Indian defense personnel are not far behind in taking advantage of plastic surgery treatment. The military, as an aid to the members making up their ranks, is allowed to make provisions for their physical well-being. To this end, reconstructive plastic surgery becomes necessary when injuries to the body are met when on duty. Howe

Ahhhh Christmas time…when else during the year do you have the ultimate threat to get the kids to behave?
Tonight it looked like two tornadoes went through the house…one through Maya's room (Strawberry Shortcake toys everywhere). Through Demetrius' room the wind blew every board game out of its container.
When asked to clean their rooms, a resounding silence was heard, and a half-hearted effort was given.
Daddy picks up the phone and calls Uncle Jimmy and Aunt Francine: the fake call to Santa proceeds, as it is across houses in the USA as type these words.
First "Santa' has a talk with Maya. She doesn't know what to think. She giggles, gets excited…and then realizes he's telling her he's watching her and she needs to clean up to stay on the "nice list'. Her eyes widen, and as she's listening…. she backs up into a corner of her room. She decides now is a good time to put her pjs on and no longer sit naked under her covers hoping Mommy will end up cleaning
This article, a third in a series, is about the softer side of rent vs. buy. These comparisons have become very popular and can easily be made using one of the many online calculators available. However, the psychological aspects of this comparison have yet to receive their deserved attention. (I still recommend reading this post about how to properly compare rent vs. buy financially as many calculators don’t make the correct comparison). As you may remember a correct comparison of rent vs. buy should be made for the same property in the same time frame where the two options are:1. Buy the property today and repay it through out the period.2. Rent the property today and buy it at the end of the period. The problem with the rent vs. buy comparison is, as always, the human factor. In order to compare rent vs. buy correctly some assumptions need to be made which are not at all easy to meet up with in real life. These assumptions are:1. We’re talking about the same property to either rent
I think there are several psychological baises working in case of real estate. The first is incentive caused bais. Typically real estate is sold via brokers or by sales agents of the builder. They have an incentive to sell the property and typically earn a commision based on sale price. It is quite obvious that the broker or sales agent would be motivated to sell at as high price as possible. In addition it is likely that he will give you a bullish outlook for the property prices. The second strong bias is social- proof and deprival super reaction tendency. You see you friend buy a property and make easy money. At the same if you have not invested money and feel deprival super reaction tendency as everyone one else is making easy money. So these two tendencies work together and motivate us to look for a property. Combine this with the incentive caused bias where the broker is constantly trying to create a scarcity (he will tell you that he has a lot of buyers and even you don’t buy now
That framework includes:
The capacity to be curious and puzzled
The patience to investigate a company’s potential
The ability to imagine what could go wrong with our decisions
Creating a good fit between our investing style and our personality
The capacity not to know
The capacity for self-reflective awareness
The ability to decenter
Emotional discipline
The capacity for optimal restraint
The capacity to be curious and puzzled
My reaction to the PR firm’s heads up on Leading Brands reflects the first requirement on my list of components for the good enough investor-to be curious and puzzled. Forget the accepted wisdom about curiosity’s effect on cats. Curiosity is part of what makes us human. But for most of us, it often falls prey to the general concerns of everyday life, particularly work. Our single-minded ways of seeing things and our unspoken theories about the world, while helping us fit into our surroundings, seem to have a way of keeping our creative puzzle

Much has been written on the part of psychology in stock market success. This lesson is probably the easiest to learn and hardest to implement. Psychology is everywhere in the stock market and effects all from the novice to the most professional (aside for computers). Many investors make the same mistakes over and over again. Mistakes such as: selling profitable stocks too soon, holding on to losing stocks forever or lacking the discipline to stay in the market and avoid frequent buying and selling are all a result of poor understanding of key psychological factors required to succeed in the stock market. Common psychological factors at play in the stock market are:AnchoringAnchoring is a psychological phenomenon in which one judges data (a stock price or exchange rate) by comparing it to a certain anchored similar data. Is 1 euro for 1.4 $ expansive? Since it has been cheaper we tend to think it is more expansive now, but is it? Just because market prices are high it does not mean they

Well, now that the intrepid oddballs from the Penny Mellor camp have for several months attempted a cover-up on the real ongoings at the British Psychological Society we can examine their role in the Lisa Blakemore Brown case. What do we mean by a cover-up? Well, it is clear that Mellor and her side kick Woolard did not want their conduct in the alleged tampering of emails to be disclosed to the entire universe. Ms Mellor recently admitted to having a "criminal mind" but not being a criminal. She was though a criminal some years ago convicted by a jury within the criminal division. Here was a summary of the tampering - WhoDunnit. First we have the reaction of these two oddballs to the fact I even questioned the issue of tampering. Fiona Woolard became stressed and continued to scream and shout at all and sundry. Penny Mellor after the first post questioning this issue started to contact the General Medical Council to report me. "Silence her" she told the GMC. Why would honest people re

Such theories involve speculations and statements that range on a potency continuum from strong to weak. The term theory, itself, has been conceived of in various ways in the psychological literature. In the present dictionary, the strategy of lumping together all the various traditional descriptive labels regarding psychologists best guesses under the single descriptive term theory has been adopted. The descriptive labels of principle, law, theory, model, paradigm, effect, hypothesis and doctrine are attached to many of the entries, and all such descriptive labels are subsumed under the umbrella term theory. The
Before reading this article..... Take A Deep Breath, Sit Back And Free Your Mind…Readers, let us all listen to the song in this website called ‘Somewhere In Time’ by John Tesh. Now, close your eyes…forget about reality for the moment, and transport ourselves to another world you can call paradise…"Imagine yourself sitting on the rocks of a beach, watching the waves of the deep blue sea almost coming to where you are. Then close your eyes and you will feel the beautiful breeze blowing on your face. Imagine the sounds of the seagulls flying and twittering across the sea. Whilst that, just breathe the fresh air that surrounds you from head to toe. Free your mind from everything else. Just feel the serenity of everything that you can see with your own eyes and hear with your own ears, and admire the indescribable beauty that Mother Nature has for you…the beautiful sunset, the ocean so blue…"Relaxed? You should be. And best of all, you can do it even in the comfort of your own

The first evidence linking mothers’ second-hand smoke exposure while pregnant to their child’s attention deficit disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder has been published in the current issue of Child Psychiatry and Human Development. ADHD and conduct disorder behaviors are called externalizing psychopathology with symtoms that include aggressive behavior, ADHD, defiance and conduct disorder.
The study compared patterns of psychopathology among three groups of children aged 7 to 15 years, all of whom had significant behavioral and/or emotional problems. Children in group 1 did not experience prenatal smoke exposure. Group 2 mothers smoked during the last two trimsters of pregnancy. Group 3 mothers were only exposed to second-hand smoke at home or at work in the final two trimesters of pregnancy. In total, 171 children (primarily boys) and 133 women participated in the study.
Researchers found that children whose mothers had been exposed to tobacco smoke either by smoking or e
I have been having a conversation with a co-worker recently regarding postmodernism. This is a topic that I’ve had some exposure to through my studies at Biola University, especially in courses taught by R. Scott Smith, author of Truth and the New Kind of Christian: The Emerging Effects of Postmodernism in the Church.
As we were discussing this topic, it became clear, however, that our understanding of the topic differed. As my friend kept describing postmodernism, it kept sounding to me like psychological perception. Let me explain.
Each example seemed to revolve around how words influence our perceptions of reality, not that the reality itself is somehow influenced or restricted by words (as is my understanding of postmodernism). One of the examples was that as we begin to place importance on something, it becomes important in peoples’ minds because the importance placed on the item by our talking about it affects how people feel about it. I completely agree with this.

Previous studies on healing by gentle touch in clients with various illnesses indicated substantial improvements in psychological well-being, suggesting that this form of treatment might be helpful for people with impaired quality of mental health. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of healing by gentle touch in subjects with self-reported impairments in their psychological well-being or mental health. One hundred and forty-seven clients who identified themselves as having psychological problems re
While Behaviorism and Self-Actualization represent the most often used psychological approaches that are applied to management technique, I don't want to lead you to believe that they are the only approaches that are available. There are other approaches to psychology like the new age "collective consciousness" and the more holistic Biblical approach.Just to review, we have already discussed some of the issues with Behaviorism view, that states that behavior is a result of the reinforcers that happen to people. This is a naturalistic (denies the spiritual) view, and some of its biggest problems lay in its inability to deal with things like free will, intuition, and other abstract aspects of the human mind. Because people's actions are only a result of the stimuli that happen to them, then there is also no room for personal responsibility. Brain activity is merely a chemical reaction. On the positive side, it does observe how positive and negative reinforcements affect human behavior.

We have a built in ability to maintain our own mental health, for the most part, if we allow ourselves to feel the emotions we have, recognize that emotion will not hurt us as long as we don't fight the experience. Negative emotions can indeed be miserable, but misery is one of the most creative forces in our lives. People don't usually make changes unless they feel forced. Misery provides the motivation to change. I tell my clients to feel emotion as a wave, let it pass over you and let it go. Note that with time, the waves subside, and new understanding, even wisdom emerges from the darkest of our experiences.
Psychologist Daniel Gilbert on the Harvard faculty has an interesting book out called, "Stumbling on Happiness". He talks about happiness as part reality, part illusion. I think he misses the point of the integrated knowledge we take from the worst of our experiences. MindBlog quotes from Chapter 8 "Paradise Glossed."

A desire to buy something often involves a subconsciousdecision. In fact, I claim that 95% of buying decisions areindeed subconscious.Knowing the subconscious reasons why people buy, and using thisinformation in a fair and constructive way, will triggergreater sales response -- often far beyond what you couldimagine.
I recall a time when I applied one of these subconscious devicesby changing just one word of an ad, and response doubled. Irefer to these subconscious devices as psychologal "triggers." Apsychological trigger is the strongest motivational factor anysalesperson or copywriter can use to evoke a sale.
There are 30 triggers in all, some of which I will reveal to youin a moment. Each trigger, when deployed, has the power toincrease sales and response beyond what you would normallyexpect.
There are triggers, for example, that will cause your prospectto feel guilty if they don't purchase your product. Let me giveyou an example. Whenever you receive in th
