You can now buy a commercial genetic test that claims to assess your risk of developing bipolar disorder. Genetic tests for major depression and schizophrenia are also expected to reach the market soon. However, although the suspects are numerous, the genes responsible for most brain disorders remain unknown. So, when it comes to commercial genetic tests, we just don't know enough to make the tests useful, reports the May issue of the Harvard Mental Health Letter. One problem is that the genetics field is advancing so rapidly that it's hard to keep up with developments, never mind figure out which ones are clinically relevant. Most experts also believe that psychiatric disorders develop because of the interplay between multiple genes, each exerting small effects. That makes finding the res

When I was in graduate school I developed an intense interest in the many varieties of psychiatric diagnoses. I immersed myself in books, articles and filmed case examples of all the many types of so-called "mental illness". I gained a deep appreciation for the value of a proper diagnostic understanding in order to know what kind of help a person needs to recover good mental and emotional health. But I also agree with many authors who have written at length on the limitations of psychiatric diagnoses, such as the following:Diagnoses are Political Despite the appearance of formality that books such as the official "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" present, the reality is that many diagnoses are vaguely defined and suffer from poor research controls. What this means
In a disturbing development by the Russian government, opposition activist Artem Basyrov was detained by two plainclothes officers and sentenced to be held in a psychiatric hospital in the central region of Mari El. The November 23 arrest is the latest in a series of psychiatric committals directed against political figures and journalists critical of the current regime. The psychiatric board that reviewed the 20-year old Basyrov's case alleged that he had "harassed" a woman and was suffering from "some sort of mental illness". Basyrov's supporters dismiss the allegations as "idiocy" and maintain that his arrest was designed to punish him for running as an Other Russia candidate in the local legislature. Basyrov was one of the organizers for a "Dissenter's meeting" that was scheduled to take place on November 24th. The other organizer, Mikhail Klyuzhev, was arrested on November 22 for "hooliganism" and held for three days. While his Basyrov's is scheduled for review in a few weeks,
Shakey went to a psychiatrist. “Doc,” he said, “I’ve got trouble. Every time I get into bed, I think there’s somebody under it. I get under the bed, I think there’s somebody on top of it. Top, under, top, under. “you gotta help me, I’m going crazy!”
“Just put yourself in my hands for two years,” said the shrink. “Come to me three times a week, and I’ll cure your fears.”
“How much do you charge?”
“A hundred dollars per visit.”
“I’ll sleep on it,” said Shakey.
Six months later the doctor met Shakey on the street. “Why didn’t you ever come to see me again?” asked the psychiatrist.
“For a hundred buck’s a visit? A bartender cured me for ten dollars.”
“Is that so! How?”
“He told me to cut the legs off the bed!”
There is no substitute for an actual consult with a psychiatrist, but your index of suspicion for yourself is high, you may use the criteria that most (if not all) psychiatrists adhere to - the DSM-IV criteria.

Bipolar disorder, or manic depression, is a serious mental illness that has eluded doctors for decades. For many years, bipolar disorder patients were diagnosed as psychotic or Schitsophrinia. However, about twenty years ago, manic depression became a more common diagnosis. Psychiatric specialists still, however, did not really understand the illness.Over time, more psychiatric evidence has come to light that proves that bipolar disorder, as it is now called, is actually caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. Other factors, both medical and situational, can be involved as well. In the last few years, psychiatric specialists and researchers have determined that bipolar disorder actually has varying degrees of severity, as well as types of symptoms.Studies of bipolar patients conducted by psychiatric professionals and researchers has long suggested that bipolar disorder runs in families, or, in other words, is hereditary. Through careful study and research of the functions of the br

The refusal of the FDA thus far to approve sale of diet drug rimonabant (Acomplia / Zimulti) in the United States is the result of concern over “increased frequencies of psychiatric adverse effects” including suicide and seizures, the agency’s staff disclosed on June 11th.
The confirmation of long-rumored FDA worries over the neuropsychiatric side-effects of this novel diet drug — which works by blocking the CB1 receptors in the brain — came in a briefing paper prepared for the June 13th airing of issues surrounding rimonabant by an FDA panel of outside medical experts.
The staff report suggests that rimonabant’s developer, Sanofi-Aventis, is in for a rough day Wednesday, and that without a favorable recommendation by the advisory panel, the FDA may well decide in July to defer approval of sale of rimonabant in the United States until it has more data — perhaps until 2010.

The lawyer for a 33-year old air hostess believed to be involved in a bizarre case in Malaysia has called for his client to receive a psychiatric evaluation. The woman (whose name has not been released) was taken into custody following the grisly June 29 discovery of the decayed remains of a man who have been chopped into eleven pieces and stuffed into a refrigerator. The discovery had been made when the new owner of the Mont Kiara condominium unit in which the remains called in condominium security to investigate the source of a strong stench that he had noted on entering. Security discovered the body parts packed into five garbage bags and sealed with masking tape.
The body was subsequently identified as being that of 39-year old Singaporean businessman, Goh Yoke Seng, and the suspect surrendered herself to police custody. She has not been formally charged to date and is being held on remand. Her lawyer is demanding a psychiatric evaluation under

It is not possible that antidepressants are involved on these issues. It is very common story and most attacks are committed by those people under antidepressant medications. I wonder what the FDA would do next.

Brain dysfunction may be only sign of gluten related disease. Dr. Mario Hadjivassiliou recently reported at the International Celiac Symposium that his neurology clinic has followed over 300 patients with gluten sensitivity presenting with various symptoms. The most common neurological sign is ataxia, a condition of impaired balance. It was present in almost half. About 60% of patients with gluten ataxia have shrinkage of the cerebellum portion of their brain. They also may have irreversible loss of brain Purkinje cells. MRI scans of the brain often reveal bright white spots in this area.Gluten causes 34% of all unexplained sporadic axonal neuropathies. Gluten sensitive enteropathy is 10 times more common in these people. I recently treated a woman who had years of a known diagnosis of such a neuropathy though she had never been tested for celiac disease. She came to me after I diagnosed her daughter's celiac disease. Though she does not meet strict criteria for celiac disease she h
