In structure-based drug design, the three-dimensional structure of a drug target interacting with small molecules is used to guide drug discovery. "Structure-based drug design represents the idea that you can see exactly how your molecule interacts with its target protein," says Raymond Salemme, founder, president, and chief scientific officer of Three-Dimensional Pharmaceuticals in Exton, Pa. This structural information can be obtained with X-ray crystallography or nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). Ideally, these two techniques complement one another. However, most companies that are specializing in structure-based drug design focus on only one method of structure determination, at least initially. Although most vegetarians consume a considerable amount of protein, they often do not absorb as much as they would on a non-vegetarian diet. This is because plant proteins are considerably less digestible than animal proteins, which contain amino acid chains that are closer or identical to human amino acid chains.Consuming animal proteins might yield close to a 1:1 absorption ratio, while consuming plant proteins, such as wheat, might only yield 50% of the amino acids needed to build a "complete protein" or a protein that can readily be assimilated into the human body.In order for vegetarians to absorb a healthy amount of protein, they must consume a variety of plant proteins to form complete amino chains. Milk Protein to Treat Hypertension
There have been several studies that have concluded that C12 (a section of protein that is derived from milk) actually lowers cholesterol. Don’t rush out and buy all of the milk in your grocer’s cooler, though. You couldn’t drink enough milk (it would take several gallons) to get enough C12 to have any effect on [...]

      Blends Protein is Famous
Whey protein is so famous now. It is so famous because of its absorption rate. Compare to all type of proteins from egg, whey, soy or casein, whey stands at the highest level when comes to fastest absorption rate. Why it is so important on absorption? It is because, our body will absorb the proteins to rebuild our muscles and repair. Faster absorption rate means better because; you can train in gym back on second day or anytime faster. Compare to pure why, soy, egg, or casein protein to combination of any of these kind of proteins. What is so special about blend proteins and why it is so famous, where most of the manufacturers best selling are from blend category. Answer is simple. Increased protein intake, faster fat loss?
Before laying out the guidelines for optimum protein consumption, let’s take a moment to examine what happens when not enough protein is consumed and to address the question of “How much protein does an active person need?”How much protein does an active person need?Protein has a mainly structural purpose in the body; the amino acids that result from the digestion of protein are used for the synthesis of non essential amino acids and other various compounds (different hormones, cell components etc.).Besides the small amount of amino acids floating around in the blood stream and in the muscles, the body has no “real” storage mechanism for amino acids.Because of this, it is critical to supply through your diet the amino acids the body needs for synthesis purposes. Failing to do so

      Low-carb / High-protein Diets
Low-carb / High-protein Diets by Eric SchmidtSome of the more popular diets out there today come in the form of low-carb. There are multiple approaches to why they say this works, from the idea that it’s easier to gain weight from carbohydrate calories than from protein and fat calories to the idea that eating fewer carbs will promote weight loss due to the fact that unbalancing your diet will cause an increase in your metabolism. Your body doesn’t need carbohydrates for fuel, it can survive solely on protein and fat if necessary, but your brain can’t, the brain requires carbohydrates, it has no way of using protein or fat energy, which is enough reason for many people to avoid low-carb diets. Low-carbohydrate diets also promote ketosis, when weight loss occurs, fats and proteins are

Food Guide For Pregnancy If you are pregnant, or if you are trying to fall pregnant, good nutrition is a top priority. Not all proteins are equal. In order to assess how valuable a source of protein is, scientists have developed the Protein Efficiency Ration (PER) and the Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS).Protein Efficiency Ratio The traditional method for evaluating protein quality has been the protein efficiency ratio (PER) which has been in use since 1919. PER is a measure of the weight gain of a growing animal divided by the amount of protein that the animal consumes. The PER is based on the growth of rats, in response to a given amount of protein. However, rats have different amino acids requirements than we do. In particular, their replacement for methionine is thought to be 50 percent higher. Consequently, the PER undervalues the quality of legume proteins. The Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score Recently, the Protein Digestibility Corrected

As always, it’s these odd conjunctions of things that don’t go together that catches the eye. In this case, molecular and sociology. The actual article1 is much more mundane and true to the correct science jargon, and included in a special section of the most recent Nature on “Proteins to Proteomes.” It’s also a nice article that examines a broad array of topics in molecular biology. Of greater interest and with a slightly less catchy title, is another article on the section: Reaching for high-hanging fruit in drug discovery at protein-protein interfaces2. The abstract: (more…)

      Soy Protein
Vegetarians and health enthusiasts have known for years that foods rich in soy protein offer a good alternative to meat, poultry, and other animal-based products. As consumers have pursued healthier lifestyles in recent years, consumption of soy foods has risen steadily, bolstered by scientific studies showing health benefits from these products. Last October, the Food and Drug Administration gave food manufacturers permission to put labels on products high in soy protein indicating that these foods may help lower heart disease risk. Scientists agree that foods rich in soy protein can have considerable value to heart health, a fact backed by dozens of controlled clinical studies. A yearlong review of the available human studies in 1999 prompted FDA to allow a health claim on food labels stating that a daily diet containing 25 grams of soy protein, also low in saturated fat and cholester

      Egg Protein
A large egg provides 6 grams of protein.Protein content of egg white=3.6g, protein content of egg yolk=2.7g.Because of their high protein content, eggs are included inthe meat, fish, poultry, nuts and beans group of the US Food Guidance Systems. Eggs have the highest quality protein in the food supply with the amino acid pattern almost matching the human requirement for essential amino acids (FAO protein value=100).Digestibility of egg protein is 97%. This means that 97% of the egg protein is absorbed as amino acids, which are availablefor new protein synthesis and replacement of lost protein.Cooked egg protein is more digestible than raw egg protein (cooked egg protein digestibility=90.9%+/-0.8, raw egg protein digestibility=51.3+/-9.8) The biological value of egg protein is 94%.

      Milk (casein) Protein
Casein is the predominant protein in milk. For example protein in cheese and cottage cheese is casein. Casein is the slow digestive protein in the family of proteins that keeps you full longer. Casein also has a naturally protein high glutamine content, higher than whey, egg or soy. It is one of the best protein in building muscles. Casein is also very low in lactose. While whey protein may increase protein synthesis to a very high degree, higher than casein, scientists are now recognizing that micellar casein is much more important in preventing muscle breakdown. In fact, additional research is demonstrating that the slow and sustained release of amino acids from micellar casein can cause a 'timed release' trickle of amino acids into the bloodstream which can last for as many as 7 full hours after ingestion.Micellar casein is the natural, undenatured form of casein found in milk. It is separated from milk by means of ultrafiltration, without the use of chemicals, which increases the

Protein discovery may hold answer for obesity sufferers
Researchers at Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital have discovered a protein that may help prevent weight loss in cancer patients and form the basis of a treatment for severe obesity. The protein, which controls appetite, leads to the extreme weight loss common in late stage cancer patients and often hastens death. The Catholic Weekly reports that by preventing the loss of appetite, doctors could give patients the strength to survive treatment and improve chances of survival. Garvan Institute's Neuroscience Research Program's Professor Herbert Herzog (pictured) said he and his team found the protein in the brain which "switches off" appetite."Our bodies send complex chemical signals to our brains, which interpret them and send back responses, in this case 'eat' or 'don't eat'," Prof Herzog said. "Our research indicated that MIC-1 is a previously unrecognised molecule sending out a 'don't eat' signal to the brain."

Foods Higher in Protein, Vitamins and Minerals
Higher Protein FoodsLack of protein is a major cause of malnutrition in many countries. Already, soya and maize have been modified to enhance the value of their protein in animal feed. Similar developments for staple crops in tropical regions could benefit many of those who are undernourished. For example, scientists in India have developed the 'protato', a potato with a far higher protein content than traditional varieties, by introducing genes from the Amaranth plant.Foods Higher in Vitamins and MineralsSome fruits and vegetables can be modified to contain higher levels of nutrients. For example, “Golden Rice” has been developed by scientists in Zurich to improve vitamin A levels in people in developing countries. Regular rice contains no vitamin A, and children brought up on it as their staple diet run a high risk of developing blindness and dying prematurely.
