How productive have you been today?
There are many ways you can answer that question - but there are two different perspectives to think about when you do. One perspective depends on how much you actually have gotten done. Another perspective depends on how much you could actually do.
I favor the latter perspective. When I [...]
Waited in line for 4 hours on Saturday, July 12th for the friggin Apple iPhone. I actually made new friends on there and there is the hype of waiting in line that brings out other personalities. I woke up at 7am on that Saturday in hopes to grab the Apple iPhone, BUT a line answered me when I entered the mall. I was pissed. Well I ended being very sleepy and tired, yet I managed to stay on line a

I’ve read two great posts this week that I’m going to tie together with some other thoughts I’ve been having. Thus, I’m violating the “one post, one topic” blogging wisdom - but bear with me as the whole will be greater than the sum of its parts.
I’ve mentioned before that I started writing about [...]
Yesterday sucked. I was not able to think straight, so I left work relatively early. I ran 6.5 miles around the Reservior. Not too much to speak of, other than I was tired and fatigued all day. I also bought some treatments for my left ear, which has been closed up on me for some time now. I can only hear ~20-40% out of this ear when it's closed. It constantly oozes wax. The fact that I hav

I keep reading that people with bigger monitors are more productive than those without. Recently, I went from a 15″ LCD to a 22″ Widescreen LCD. I have to admit, when I first put it up on my desk it seemed HUGE. I mean, ridiculous, as in, “What did I just waste my money on?” [...]

But we all have dormant relationships; most likely, more than those which are active. So how can we light the fire under these relationships? And how can they inspire us to [...]
Most meetings are a hodgepodge of different members that get together to discuss some topic. The members are often not interested in the information being presented, only partially engaged in the conversation, and their thoughts continue to wander. If it wasn’t bad enough that the members weren’t interested in the meeting itself, the meeting was poorly planned, took too long, and was likely a

There are ways to make your laziness work to your advantage. One example is automatic bill payment -- once you set it up, it becomes more of a hassle to stop them than to let them continue. Your bills get paid by inertia.
There are other ways that your innate laziness can work for you:
Automatic savings: 10 percent of your paycheck goes into a high-yield account with withdrawal penalties.

Part of the reason I’ve been delaying the release of this aid is because the weekly planner is so important. Planning by weeks is just so much more effective because it allows you to capture both the [...]

Get Productive in Linux [How To] The Anywired blog posts a good guide to using Ubuntu (and most any Linux distribution) productively, through both built-in but under-appreciated features and free software. In a Real Clear Politics editorial here, Ed Koch has linked the pardon power to the hot topic of prisoner interrogation and the use of torture. Koch writes, among other things:I believe that torture may be warranted in the "ticking bomb" situation, where the interrogators reasonably believe based on credible information in their possession that the suspect knows where the "ticking bomb" is located and no other source is available to them. I do not believe there should be any statute or regulation authorizing torture, but we must depend on interrogators of conscience, mindful of the consequences of their actions. If any such interrogator is wrong in his judgment, tortures the suspect and elicits no bomb information, he should be indicted and serve a prison sentence upon conviction. If he el

It's rare that I actually have a productive Sunday since most of the time, Sundays are my lazy days; days I spend vegetating in front of the TV. Today, I decided to make some home-made spinach and ricotta cheese which, by the way, can be found at my other blog. It was tasty too. Though, I did cheat a little by adding a can of canned pasta sauce to the sauce because I like a lot of sauce to go with my pasta. I'm glad that when I went to do grocery shopping for my ravioli, I wasn't sidetracked by all the other sales that were at the mall. Actually, it wasn't really because of self-control. More like I couldn't find what I wanted. Well, at least I didn't spend more than I should. So anyway, since I'm doing this learn-how-to-cook-something-new thing, I think I should set aside my Sundays as my

One of the most frustrating paradigms in the modern workplace is that "staying busy" is often substituted for "staying efficient." You can stay busy for eight hours and get very little work done (we all have known coworkers like this) while others can stay efficient and get 2-3 times as much done in half the time. So what makes an efficient person? Well, I would venture to say that being efficient is more about what you "cut out" than what you "add in," although most productivity tips include more of the latter. That said, here are 10 ways that I've found to be helpful in trimming excess waste in my typical freelancing work week. Being More ProductiveCut Out Multitasking. "Multitasking" has become a sacred word in today's workplace. And although it can be a great quality for certain roles
Actually, I felt semi-productive yesterday. I managed to write just a little over a thousand words again on the WIP. No, the hero and heroine aren't free yet. I'm beginning to think it's never going to happen, which is going to make for an interesting ending. ;-)
What else? Oh, yes! I made it to kickboxing. On time, even! Thought I'd see my sister there, but apparently her church classes

Lifting Equipments: Ensuring a Safe and Productive Output
By: Christine Macguire
Gone are the days when workers had to spend time lifting, carrying, holding, pushing, or pulling loads of material on construction sites. Mechanical devices for handling of materials are very common today. People have understood that lifting and carrying of materials often or for long periods of time leads to constant stress on the back and shoulders and may eventually lead to the development of serious muscle or joint injuries. So employers have decided to not only reduce risks but also increase efficiency by stopping manual material handling and implementing advanced material handling equipments.
One of the most effective solutions is to use materials, building components, or work methods that are less labor-intensive. Lifting equipments used at work should be strong and stable enough for the particular use and marked to indicate safe working loads. They should be positioned and installed to minimize an

Do you feel like you need a coffee fix every day? Can you really survive your morning without that cup of Joe? If this sounds like you, you're not alone. A large number of people that wake up in the morning need their coffee to jump start their mornings and help them throughout the day. Some even drink way too much - 2 cups of regular strength coffee is enough. This is actually good for your heart and has many health benefits as well. Upscale coffee brands are becoming the norm in many offices across the world. Hotel managers and catering companies are also getting rave reviews about good branding quality. People that drink better coffee "feel" that they are becoming more productive and hence work better throughout the day. I am not saying that there is scientific evidence on this matter (maybe there is, but I'm not a scientist). Just the psychological aspect of it shows this point. So the next time you drink a

...damn it, and I can't show you them! Yesterday I drew three of what I hope will be seen as the best cartoon gags I've ever drawn. Well, OK - one was a bit of a 'filler'. They have been sent off to PE - so fingers crossed.
The good news (for you lot) is that it looks like the previous gags I sent have been ignored, so I might just post one of them here tomorrow.
A bit strange all this. I'm still drawing at the same rate I was before - I'm just not showing anyone (as yet - they will start to filter through soon). You'll just have to take my word for it. Things will become more cartoony soon, I promise. Meanwhile, here's an old gag that some of the newer visitors might not have seen, and some of the very old visitors might have forgotten about!

The clock showed 6 minutes 54 seconds when Tomas Rosicky put the 3rd round qualifying tie beyond doubt. After this goal the game was put way beyond any doubt. Any nerves were settled and the Arsenal faithful were in for an easy night. It was a pity the players felt this way aswell.
Sparta put up little or no fight at all and it almost became a training game for the lads in red. Arsenal played it around and at times became lethargic and allowed Sparta a rare venture forward. Otherwise it was a simple exercise of keep ball with the odd flourish into the opposition box. Unfortunately the players never moved out of first gear and a second goal didn’t really look on the cards.
Half time arrived with every Gooner in the Emirates Stadium sitting pretty with their overpriced drinks (which have got smaller and gone up in price) and hot dogs (aids dogs as my mate calls them). The second half started better with the home team pressurising Sparta into errors.
However this didn
By Sean R Mize Domain names are an important factor which can contribute a lot towards the success or failure of a web site. A web site can succeed if many people visit it during a day. Web traffic is very important to the success of a web site. Any web site that receives a number of visitors can survive while others cannot. Domain names are very important in creating a flow of web traffic towards a web site. Actually, the language of the machines is numeric in nature. The URLs are generally numeric it will not be possible for human beings to remember those numeric sequences which describe the location of a web site on the internet. In this situation, the human beings have developed a readable language. A domain name is an alphabetic replacement of the numeric sequence which refers to the location of a web site on the internet.Domain names can help you in making lots of money. First of all you need to be sure about the kind of business you want to do through your web site. Think of the
Tim Ferriss, author of the The 4-Hour Work Week, has published a great list of 9 Not-To-Do’s in an article titled The Not-To-Do List: 9 Habits to Stop Now. I thought this was a really great read for anyone trying to increase the productivity in their life. I’ve listed a few of my favorites below:
1. Do not answer calls from unrecognized phone numbers
Feel free to surprise others, but don’t be surprised. It just results in unwanted interruption and poor negotiating position. Let it go to voicemail, and consider using a service like GrandCentral (you can listen to people leaving voicemail) or Simulscribe (receive voicemails as e-mail).
I’m a bit of a phone hater anyway, so this one rang (pun intended) especially true for me. One of my best friends was known for looking at the phone and seeing a number that he didn’t recognize and not answering. He’d then say, “Sorry, you did not authenticate.” I like that. Of course I actually take this one ste
YouTube. MySpace. Some Christians call these places the dregs of the internet. I call them fields to be harvested. And now that the iPhone has YouTube built in, hundreds of thousands of people are out there to be reached. We can get right into their phones for crying out loud!
That, combined with some other circumstantial Holy Spirit inspiration, led me to create this first video. I hope it’s cool that I posted it here. If not I will just put a link to it on my own blog. Enjoy!
So, while I was at the beach this week, I finally finished "Peopleware - Productive Projects and Teams" by Tom DeMarco and Timothy Lister. As I read through the book, I kept having these moments where I thought that the two authors were walking with me through my days at work. There were some major themes that were threaded throughout the book, and I think we all need to keep them in mind. This is a summary of the starred sections, underlined bits, and notes that I took while reading. Keep in mind that these are short clips from the book. The book goes into much greater detail and explains the arrival at each of their points. Also, this is a summary of the points that the author has made, and are not necessarily a reflection of my position, opinion, or belief. Managing the Human Reso
I need you guys to think about the stuff that I can’t think about. I’m currently working on a tool that will hopefully make some of my/our pastoral meetings and coaching-type gatherings more productive.
Up until now, when I meet together with other pastors, (especially those from our local church plants), I don’t feel like we are making the best use of our time and talents to deal with the issues that really need attention. For the most part, we say things like, “So, how’s it going?”, and we get responses like, “Oh, it’s all right.” Occasionally we deal with an issue up front and sometimes the needs that are requiring attention go un-addressed.
So here’s what I propose.

I set a record for trade alerts today, as I was adding stocks for a new client, while also doing some trading in existing clients accounts. While everyone is ahead, the day could have closed a little better. The final trade of PXLW was one below the bid ($1.48) at $1.46, when the price had been $1.49. In fact, all of the stocks I was following did not do well in the final few minutes. Thankfully, all of those stocks had made nice rebounds in the preceding 30 minutes, so they were mostly ahead by the close. One of the best comebacks came from AA. That one had been dogging me all day, but then had a great reversal in the late afternoon. Hopefully, we'll get a good performance from the market tomorrow, and the stock will hit my $42 target. As for my own portfolio, AIS was up 2 cents, while the rest of my holdings stayed steady. That still equates to a $1,000 gain, so it was a good day for me. So far the week has been good as well. Hopefully, tomorrow will close things out positively.Make s
Work and fun are rarely spoken in the same breath. Common business practice tells you that to be productive, you must be relentless and keep pushing yourself until you finish. You may feel that the harder you work, the more productive you become. The opposite is true. The more you push yourself, the less effective you will be. Fatigue will set in and much of the work you accomplish will have to be redone.
Instead of working to the point of exhaustion, stop what you are doing and take a break. When you return to your desk, you should feel refreshed and will often discover answers to questions that eluded you for hours. Your demands as a home office professional are unending. Your weapon against boredom, repetition, and fatigue is to take breaks and, above all, to give yourself a break. Such as Doing a math homework, studying a language, or selling a project, ect.
Case in point:
Dr. Ann McGee-Cooper, an author, consultant, and “brain engineer,” coined the phrase “joy
I'm participating in a polka-dots themed swap this month, so one of the items in my package was this pencil case. I did a kind of random piecing job, and then quilted outlines. The zipper is a vintage one handed down from my grandmother's stash. I was happy with how it came out. This is an apron I made to go in my mum's birthday package. I picked up the fabric on clearance at Joann's, and was loath to part with all those little birdies. But I know mum will love it despite my less-than-professional finishing job (bias binding and I were not having a good day). The pattern is my much loved "1 yard apron" that I got from sewmamasew.I started a dress yesterday, and I'm hoping to wear it on Saturday to the family get-together. I think the fact that I'm starting a project with only two weeks to go before I move is a sign that I should be seriously concerned about my mental health? (But it's going to be very cute. All stripey and halter-necked.)
first off, before I get into this: there’s a new ministry handbook for ushers, greeter, hospitality and the such uploaded onto the downloads page..
Secondly.. I’m getting into this now. On another thread that John wrote, my pastor brought up the benefits of having good relationships over training workshops and the such. Personally, I agree. Jesus didn’t have workshops with His disciples. He had relationships with them. So, that’s the most idealistic basis, I believe, for us pastors to find mutual edification from one another.
If you have a good relationship or two with pastors who are willing to; teach, mentor, encourage and direct, then you are in a good place. (more…)
The review from amazon.com looks like it would be a great read for an airplane ride: Peopleware asserts that most software development projects fail because of failures within the team running them. This strikingly clear, direct book is written for software development-team leaders and managers, but it's filled with enough commonsense wisdom to appeal to anyone working in technology. Authors Tom DeMarco and Timothy Lister include plenty of illustrative, often amusing anecdotes; their writing is light, conversational, and filled with equal portions of humor and wisdom, and there is a refreshing absence of "new age" terms and multistep programs. The advice is presented straightforwardly and ranges from simple issues of prioritization to complex ways of engendering harmony and productivity i
Less sleep means less energy to carry out the needed duties and tasks that most of us are expected to perform in everyday lives. Sleep does not need to be elaborated. The fact remains; sleep is the energizer that keeps us on the go. Foregoing the need for sleep and recharging instances will most likely to tasks being performed below par or incompetently. A person will simply suffer continuous problems that will prevent them from producing the needed output and performance as expected from them in their normal days.
However, there are instances when something has to give. Reaching deadlines and making sure that people are able to meet them despite sacrificing some amount of sleep will surely be something that a person has to choose from. Altogether, it takes will power and persistence to carry out most of them simultaneously. A person has to push himself to the limit, but for sure, there will be some room left for potential need to be able to retain the level of quality.

This morning while online, I came across a job opening in a field I would like to get back into. I resigned from my previous job in March and took a nice break, but if I could find an opening for the hours and days I want in my 'old' field I would like to return to it. Well, since we are overdue for a promotion and/or move I hesitated to send an inquiry letter until I spoke with my husband.
Welcome to another Blog Your Blessings Sunday.Saturday evening a transformer blew and we lost electricity for a few hours. We still had some daylight for a bit, but I lit a few candles and an oil lamp to help away from the few windows in the mobile home. The kids got very bored (so did Jim) and baby ND cried a lot because she still doesn't feel well (half the kids are beginning to feel better). I, however, took the opportunity to go through piled up paperwork.I processed a nine-inch high stack and archived four year's worth of writing financial papers.Woohoo! Talk about a blessing. Thank God for a blown transformer!Technorati Tags:  power outage ^ paperwork ^ Blog Your Blessings Sunday
Commuting is the bane of my current existence. While my commute is nowhere near the hour I used to spend on the commuter rail when I lived in the Boston area, and while it is certainly shorter than any Los Angeles-based commute I've ever had, it still is, in my mind, an hour of the day where I cannot be productive. My commute is too short for audio books, yet too long to just listen to the radio.Ever since I got my Apple 4 GB iPod Nano, however, the commute has become a productive hour where I can learn about different areas of law from Legal Lad, hear columns on ways to Win at Work, and even learn to speak Italian. I've subscribed to several podcasts through Apple's iTunes software, which is necessary for transferring files to my iPod. iTunes automatically synchronizes new podcasts to my iPod, so each time I plug my iPod into my computer, my iPod is updated with new listening material. And with my TuneCast Auto Adapter, I can plug my iPod in and broadcast podcasts and music th
Current Mood: I got a bunch of unpacking done today. I got all those boxes of Mom's off the front porch. They were driving me crazy… they looked so damn tacky. After I got it clean I decided it needed flowers so I went to Walmart. Mom had been babysitting McKenzie, but I decided to take her with me. While I was looking at flowers I saw a pool and a barbeque grill I wanted so I bought them.
The pool is 18ft x 4ft. I also got a bunch of pool toys and lights and stuff… I'm such a impulse shopper.
When McKenzie and I got back home we started planting the flowers. It was the first time I've ever done any gardening. McKenzie is 2 1/2 now and got in the way more than she helped, but we bonded. I have to admit that I haven't paid her much attention since McKayla was born. I know that's messed up, but I couldn't help it. McKayla is my flesh and blood and I love her more than I do McKenzie, but I'm trying to stop showing favoritism.

I was off work today, so I decided I should actually be productive.
I cleaned out that huge aquarium (24×36x16) mom gave me for Osiris. He's about five feet now and he was getting cramped up in his thirty gallon reptile tank. He shed a couple nights ago, so I had to clean out that tank as well. I always feed him a few days after he sheds, so I'll have to go to Petco later to get him a rat.
The tank Osiris is in now is a reptile tank, not an aquarium. The difference between the two is that his tank is taller than most aquariums and it has vents on each side, so I can't put fish in it. I want to get something for it though, so I'll check on that when I go to Petco tonight.
We are using the dining room as an office and it was full of boxes and computers and desks. My computer was the only one set up. (It was one of the first things I did when we moved in… I'm such a geek.) I moved my computer across the room to the other corner and moved the other tw
Here a five web sites that you can use to make the things you do in your daily life easier. These are all fairly new, but have become very popular recently.1. DropSend - DropSend is a web site that allows you to send large files up to 1GB to someones email or to store files online. There are a couple of web sites like this that are free, so you'll want to check out which one is the best for you. With DropSend, you can send files up to 1GB in size and send up to 5 times in a month for the free plan. The one feature that I like about DropSend is the desktop app (which is very small) and allows you to send files directly from your desktop!2. FreshBooks - FreshBooks is a online service that lets you create invoices for customers and perform time tracking all through the web! This is becoming a popular service for freelancers, consultants, or other service oriented providers. You can also keep track of your time, bill clients through email or by post, share documents, manage work orders, a

Surprisingly productive day
I woke up and rushed to get the kids out the door for school, typical of any Monday around our house. This morning I didn't bring the dog. I wasn't in the mood for a long walk. I had a headache. Plus, I wasn't sure if the piano was coming today and I had no idea what time my Avon order would show up. These are my excuses, and they work for me. Besides, we're all

In other news, I found the best Falafel ever in Paris. The place is called L'As de Fallafel and is in the Jewish neighborhood in the fourth arrondissement. Amazing Falafel sandwiches... the trick is to get the sandwiches sitting down. That and an order of fries split between four makes a great, relatively cheap meal. You can eat there for about 9 Euros that way, including drink! I think I am starting to get a hang of Paris this week. Was out with Kimon and a couple of other friends tonight, and we went to where one of his friends was working... at the Dissidents ad agency. Very cool. Got to see some award winning commercials they produced, including some great spots for the Lau

No-Domain is a Barcelona-based audiovisual design studio with a client roster that includes Nike, Heineken, Adidas, Nestle, Levi's, and MTV. The teamâs work has been described as "graphic design mixed with video art, mixed with illustration, mixed with animation, mixed with experimentation, mixed with advertising, mixed with large doses of pop, lo-fi, hi-fi and improvisation." The creative team (Lorena, Joaquin, Nelson, Wyzton and Martin) took some time to share a few insights with Behance.
"Genius? Nothing! Sticking to it is the genius! Any other bright-minded fellow can accomplish just as much if he will stick like hell and remember: nothing that's any good works by itself. You've got to make the damn thing work!" So said Thomas Edison, a man that made many ideas happen. We have much to learn from the creative minds around us that actually act on ideas. Behance was thrilled to have a discussion with Jonathan Moore, an especially productive interactive designer that has made a real impact in his industry.
