My new mission is to get as many men as possible to read Jewel Woods' Black Male Privilege Checklist. (Click here if you didn't read it here yesterday.)It is my sincerest hope that there are men brave enough to read the entire thing and realize how accurate many of the priviliges listed are. It's funny how men who understood and agreed with Tim Wise's list about White privilege are unable to turn
Without debating the merits of any particular case--and no, I really don't want to get into particulars--I just want to ask a specific question.Should an executive be allowed to claim "executive privilege" on emails copied to their spouse?I think we'd all agree that an email between, say, the Governor and Lieutenant Governor could be covered by executive privilege, as might a memo from the Governo

The Bush administration has claimed executive privilege in response to a subpoena request from the House Judiciary committee. Members of the House committee are seeking testimony about the CIA leak that revealed Valerie's Plame's covert standing. Attorney General Micheal Muskasy advised Bush to claim privilege, stating "I am greatly concerned about the chilling effect that compliance with the comm
Many years ago it was determined that the goal that most Americans should have is home ownership. This message was loud and clear after WWII. And for year after year, that message was delivered to the American people by the government, lending institutions and REALTORS. And for many years the rate of homeownership in America held steady between 63% and 66%. In fact, for 33 years, between 1965 and
Well, we're back home, pleasantly vacated and rested from the toil of the workaday world. Now, if only everyone could afford and enjoy even a brief holiday, then there would be economic justice in the world. But alas, only some of us can afford such luxury, and I am very grateful that this is possible for us. While our vacations are modest affairs, they're still vacations nonetheless, and I bear in

You only have to talk to Black workers to realize how many of us feel that our careers are often intentionally stifled by those we work with. Sometimes I wonder exactly how many African Americans have been held back, railroaded, and marginalized simply because of our race. I think the answer is far more people than we will ever know. I mean, how do you calculate the number of White managers or supervisors that have not promoted Black staff or given Black staff the same consideration and benefits that White workers routinely receive? Some Whites would probably say, “That’s sounds like a cop out. Maybe some Blacks just don’t work hard to get what they want.” But, that’s what I expect someone to say when they are the beneficiary of White privilege.White privilege is the polar opposit
A student at Capistrano Valley High School in California has accused his AP European history teacher of making disparaging remarks about Christianity in class. This really is a shame. The teacher needs to realize that when truth and Christianity collide, Christianity must prevail. But sarcasm aside, bigotry, and this includes anti-Christian bigotry, has no place in the schools. Is this a case of bigotry or something else entirely?According the FaithNews Network, Chad Farnan, a Christian student, has accused history teacher, James Corbett, of making remarks hostile to his religion. This sounds serious. bigotry is almost as deplorable in the public schools as it is in state government. So what exactly did Corbett say?The Christian student cites an incident from last December when Corbett sta

Yet the religious discussion would happen again and again. A high school student, or a 20s or 30s something person would tell a little about his or her story.Someone would ask, "How are your parents doing with this?"The individual would reply, "Well, you know, they are Christian."And everyone would groan. They all knew exactly what that meant, bigot

What if you were a restaurant owner and you learned that Christian-owned restaurants are exempt from health inspections? While you have to maintain rigorous health and safety standards in order to pass surprise governmental inspections, restaurants owned and operated by Christians had no such requirements. Sounds far-fetched, doesn't it? What if I told you that something much like this scenario was true - not for restaurants but for day-care centers? When a parent sends his or her child to day-care, this is typically not a decision taken lightly. The parent has probably investigated countless day-care centers and asked trusted friends for recommendations. Cost is often a consideration, but safety is even more important. After all, we're talking about entrusting strangers with the care of one's child. At least parents can take some consolation in the knowledge that state governments license day-care centers, providing some quality assurance. Government inspectors may utilize surprise v
"I always felt that the great high privilege, relief and comfort of friendship was that one had to explain nothing." -Katherine Mansfield, New Zealand Modernist Writer, Katherine Mansfield books//
True friendship is hard to find. Trust is key, and so is the absence of judgement. Friends should always tell you the truth, especially when you are doing something wrong which hurts others. Friends stick by you, though, through both good and bad times, and their faith in you as a person is unquestionable. As Mansfield says, there is comfort in knowing that you don't have to explain everything you say, feel or do - they like you no matter what. You can joke around, blow off steam and share...

When Harriet Miers failed to respond to a subpoena issued by the House Judiciary Committee investigating the firing of nine US attorneys thought to be removed for political reasons, the House started the proceedings necessary to hold Harriet Miers in contempt. Now Bush has claimed that even if Miers is held in contempt, the Justice Department (read: Alberto Gonzales) cannot pursue the charges due to executive privilege. I’m not sure executive privilege means what the President thinks it means. It is supposed to be the privilege Presidents have to keep their private consultations private. As time goes on, it seems more and more clear that Bush thinks executive privilege is a shield behind which he can hide his criminal acts.
I’ve said it before, and apparently some agree. The United Nations belongs in Iraq, and they are prepared to enter the region shortly.
I like the Darwin fish. To me, it is a healthy pro-science statement. Of course, I acknowledge that it also carries an anti-religion connotation for some people due to its design (i.e., borrowing from the Christian design which came first) and the inevitable conflict between religion and science. I'm also aware that some people view displaying a Darwin fish as an act of symbolic aggression. More than just being an interesting symbol that is interpreted in diverse ways, the Darwin fish exposes the scope of Christian privilege and says volumes about the plight of nonbelievers.I do not have a Darwin fish on my car, but I would very much like to. Why? I perceive it as one of the rare symbols which conveys both a pro-science and an anti-superstition sentiment simultaneously. Since I am both pro-science and anti-superstition, it is an unusually accurate symbol for my worldview. But the main reason I'd like to have one because of how it makes me feel when I see one on another vehicle. They
Dear Chairman Leahy and Chairman Conyers: (This document in PDF format (153kb, 3 pages)I write in response to your letter of June 29, 2007.Let me begin by conveying a note of concern over your letter's (This document in PDF format 245kb 4 pages) tone and apparent direction in dealing with a situation of this gravity. We are troubled to read the letter's charge that the President's "assertion of Executive Privilege belies any good faith attempt to determine where privilege truly does and does not apply." Although we each speak on behalf of different branches of government, and perhaps for that reason cannot help having different perspectives on the matter, it is hoped you will agree, upon further reflection, that it is incorrect to say that the President's assertion of Executive Privilege was performed without "good faith."As the letter from the Acting Attorney General explained in considerable detail, the assertion of Executive Privilege here is intended to protect a fundamental in

President Bush invoked executive privilege Monday to deny requests by Congress for testimony from two former aides about the firings of federal prosecutors. The White House, however, did offer again to make former counsel Harriet Miers and one-time political director Sara Taylor available for private, off-the-record interviews. In a letter to the heads of the House and Senate Judiciary panels, White House counsel Fred Fielding insisted that Bush was acting in good faith and refused lawmakers' demand that the president explain the basis for invoking the privilege. The latest move in the separation of powers fight between the legislative and executive branches came as members of Congress began returning from their Fourth of July recess. An atmosphere of high tension accompanied the resumption of work as a fight also loomed there between majority Democrats and some key Republicans and Bush over his Iraq war policy.Rep. John Conyers stated that "Contrary what the White House may believe, i
Ferrari also considered and incorporated traditional construction techniques with the TR. The company employed a tubular frame—one that came with steel and alloy paneling which was suspended on double wishbones and oil springs front and rear. The huge 18-inch 46 cm alloy wheels were clad in very low profile rubber that was well able to absorb the muscular 360 foot pounds of torque the car was capable of generating. After all, pushed all the way, Ferrari claimed that the TR could notch up to 194.5 mph or 313 kph. The rubber tires were, essentially, another precautionary measure if and when the driver of the said car decides to go and reach for that record, if not exactly set out to surpass it. (more…)
Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, says that he will try to cite the White House for criminal contempt of Congress if necessary, according to the Washington Post. The Congressional investigators want e-mails, testimonies, and other documents related to the firing of nine federal prosecutors. So far, the White House has refused by saying they have executive privilege, as though the idea of separation of powers means each branch should operate without the supervision of others under all circumstances.
Which is lunacy. There are things that no branch of government should do, such as firing federal prosecutors for political reasons. Unless it’s a national security issue and should be kept secret to stop evil-doers from killing us (seems rather unlikely), there’s no reason the public shouldn’t know; and the only way government-wrongdoing can be prevented is if people know about it.

See Original StoryIn a letter to White House counsel Fred Fielding, the heads of the Senate and House Judiciary committees demanded an explanation in 10 days of why the White House claimed executive privilege on subpoenaed documents and vowed to invoke "the full force of law.""The veil of secrecy you have attempted to pull over the White House by withholding documents and witnesses is unprecedented and damaging to the tradition of open government by and for the people that has been a hallmark of the republic," Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., and Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., told Fielding. They gave the White House until July 9 to furnish the factual and legal bases for the executive privilege claim and documentation that President Bush personally signed off on it.Whether or not the White House meets the deadline, "we will take the necessary steps to rule on your privilege claims and appropriately enforce our subpoenas backed by the full force of law," Leahy and Conyers wrote. The problems amon

This from the Kentucky Law Review blog:Paul E. Salamanca, James and Mary Lassiter Professor of Law in the University of Kentucky College of Law, and James Keller, former associate justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court, have an article in the most recent edition of the Kentucky Law Journal, released today. The article, titled "The Legislative Privilege to Judge the Qualifications, Elections, and Returns of Members," examines the case of Stephenson v. Woodward.Stephenson v. Woodward stems from a residency dispute in the 2004 Kentucky general election. The Kentucky Supreme Court ruled that Dana Seum Stephenson could not serve in the state Senate because she was not a resident of Kentucky for enough time prior to her seeking the seat. Furthermore, Virginia Woodward was not eligible either because she did not receive the majority of the popular vote.Salamanca and Keller use this case as the foundation for the findings in their article."Although we take Stephenson as our point of departure,

Welcome to Works for Me Wednesday, sponsored by Rocks In My Dryer. My post this week is the privilege ladder portion of our discipline system that I talked about last week in my Chore Board post.On the right side of the Chore Board, you probably noticed a ladder with pegs on it. That's the working part of the ladder. If you made a chore board for your family, add this working ladder part to the open side of your cork board by drawing a simple ladder in permanent marker. My ladder is two inches wide and the rungs are two inches apart. The privilege ladder has seven rungs. Each rung has different privileges the children earn which we list on a separate ladder you see in this picture. (I made it out of cardboard and "laminated" it with packing tape.)If a kid is on level five, he kid gets all the privileges up to that rung including the one he's on. The bottom of the ladder before rung one is, of course, grounded. This has base privileges like reading and playing with bucket toys, plus ext
I've had my first experience of private health care - having been paying £10 a month since April, I finally got round to having my six month check up at the dentist. Does the fact that I'm out £80 make a difference? Well, since it's the same dentist and there's nothing wrong with my teeth not really. Although he did give my teeth a quick polish which he never usually does. I also got more of an assessment of what's going on in my mouth - I have very good oral hygiene, apparently. Always nice to know. I suppose it's a question of making sure the patient feels they have had their money's worth. After all, I've already contributed to NHS dentistry with my National Insurance so I'm now paying twice because I don't have access to an NHS dentist anymore. Thank you Mr Blair and your stupid dentists' contracts, it's thanks to you that the practice I have been going to for 20 years went private. One piece of advice was to try flossing of an evening.
