What Happened After the West Forgot its Priorities by Mike Freeman
As I look up the U.S. national debt clock, I cannot help but think of what was warned of by Wendell Phillips: "Debt is the fatal disease of republics, the first thing and the mightiest to undermine governments and corrupt the people." I see it has currently ticked up to about $9,360,622,130,417.00- about the sum of all U.S. wars ever combined, which is around $30,800 for every single American

Getting Your Priorities Right - Coffee
Here at Blacknight we take our coffee very seriously. I recently decided that we needed to get a slightly beefier coffee machine. The one we had been using for the last few months was fine, but it was time to upgrade. Since I'm half Italian and have always had a certain fixation with good quality coffee it was only natural that I'd look at Gaggia and similar marques. The machine I opted for in the end is a Gaggia Syncrony which takes beans or ground coffee. Since we recently imported about 20 kg of fairtrade coffee beans our small little coffee grinder was under a lot of pressure, so a machine that did its own grinding solved two problems:- ease of use- dosageOne of the things that's really nice about the new machine is that you can re-program it so that the dosage of coffee and water is ex

My list of new priorities ...
Life has a funny way of kicking you right between the legs just when you least expect it. The past two weeks have had a few ups and downs, with a doctor's appointment this week which has changed a few priorities. I rather dislike change, especially when it requires sacrifice of things I greatly adore. Two weeks ago I was required to attain a medical physical for my immigration paperwork.

From Faceoff.com:5 THINGS MIKE GILLIS SAID WILL BE HIS TOP PRIORITIES:1. Deciding on a head coach. Mike Gillis says making a decision on his coach is the most important task he faces in the immediate future. He will sit down soon with current coach Alain Vigneault, who has a year left on his contract.2. Gauge Roberto Luongo's long-term commitment to the organization. "Roberto is a priority," said Gillis. "If we don't have him as a priority, our shelf life with him is about two years."3. Find more scoring. Gillis knows the Canucks need more punch up front. "Two or three additions [to the] group might make a vital change."4. Settle on the status of captain Markus Naslund, a former Gillis client, who becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1. Iraq: Twisted Priorities

"Also, the senators want to know why the Iraqi government has not spent more of its oil revenue on its own country."Fair question. So, on Monday, the Iraq government announced its decision to spend $5.9 billion dollars. On what, you ask? Roads? Hospitals? Clean water? Food? Electricity generation? Houses for the millions of displaced homeless? No.On airplanes.Yes, that's right. They've signed a contract with Boeing and Bombardier to buy 50 airplanes.Maybe the government can move some of those millions of starving and parched Iraqi citizens who still live in the dark due to this endlessly corrupt occupation

I am beginning to have some sympathy for those young celebrities with drug problems criticised this week by the UN, as I have been self-medicating the past couple of weeks to deal with the stress of living up to expectations on the project at work, although I must quickly make it clear that my drugs of choice have been the odd glass of wine and vast quantities of chocolate.Yesterday afternoon things finally clicked into place in my head and I got my priorities straight. What did it was a conversation where somebody mentioned that he had just read a book on business metaphors. At that point something inside me said 'Whoa, do you want to end up like him? Using your precious free time to read books on business metaphors?' I felt like shaking the man and saying, 'I've just read The Count of Mo

Well, you should start selling yourself to colleges your sophomore year (did not know that) and I need to get started. He told me that he could start talking to coaches for me but, I needed to help myself and him by keeping up my grades, staying out of trouble, participating in more camps and getting more exposure. Misplaced priorities over Danish cartoons
Now this is something to be angry about. I dunno. I have to say that I am sick and tired of these Danish cartoon protests. They remind me so much of the cockamamie priorities people have. It's kind of like when hundreds of people call a newspaper after it publishes a story about a homeless and injured kitten. Everybody wants to adopt it. But when the newspaper publishes an article about a homeless and injured 3-year-old girl, the phones are silent. What are the issues facing Muslims today? - At least 54 Palestinians died in Israeli rocket attacks in Gaza. And that was just yesterday. - Iraqi civilian casualties jumped 33 percent over January. - Errant US missiles rockets continue continue to kill Afghan civilians by the dozens with no apparent accountability. - France has denied women t

{summary} That’s a warehouse store size box of Rice Krispies Treats because they’re so wholesome.  I guess he didn’t think the other stuff we bought was quite as fascinating. We probably head to BJ’s every three weeks or so for diapers, wipes, and whatever else we can get for a “can’t say ‘no’” price.  On that particular trip we happened to run into one of R’s baby buddies (and his mom) so that was serendipitous. One thing I observe from these trips, though, is that as R’s diapers get larger the quantity in the box decreases...and the price stays the same.  At 15 months he still has lots of diaper changes during the day, so I’m hoping he’ll just spontaneously potty train himself any day now.

Emotion Defines Morality; Culture Sets Priorities
“Man will become better when you show him what he is like.” - Anton Chekhov Our modern culture highly values our rationality. Genius, seemingly defined as those with great accomplishment, is highly celebrated by our culture, if not by income, at least by notoriety. Our emotionality, on the other hand, seems to get attributed with causing many of the problems our culture finds criminal. Rage is said to have led to many murders, domestic abuse, child abuse and greed to theft and fraud for a couple of examples. Combining genius and emotional disturbance however seems to characterize those that gain infamy in the history books. Hitler and Stalin come to mind. We are part rational, part emotional. From my clinical experience, we are unable to separate the two effectively. In other words,

It is wise to regularly evaluate what you're treating as the 'most important' mission in your life. Maybe it is a relationship, a political stance, a denominational stance, or any sort of theological opinion. Perhaps you adhere to these statements made by Jesus, that there is no other commandment greater than the passages of today's verse. If you find yourself considering other issues more important than these, consider revisiting your priorities.

      Changing Priorities and Travel
An interesting and positive contrast to my post about changes in technology and attitudes hurting some music companies is an email from insurance company AIG Travel Guard yesterday. The insurance business is extremely competitive, forcing companies to be quick in reacting to economic and lifestyle trends, but the extent to which that’s now going surprised me. Many people today put their careers and businesses above all else, and even those who temper that dedication sometimes encounter situations that demand their full and immediate attention, even if it means flying home from a family vacation. With AIG, a policy add-on simply called “Cancel for Work Reasons” is now available. As well as covering trip cancellation, this option includes such business services as emergency dictation and business correspondence assistance, wireless accessory replacement assistance and more. Even if business cancellations aren’t a worry for you, “Cancel for Any Reason”

      Assessing My Priorities
Stress is nothing more than a socially acceptable form of mental illness. ~Richard Carlson As I have been striving to slow down these last few weeks in an attempt to lead a not-so-frantic lifestyle, I have found myself often pondering what my true priorities are. Are the things I am spending the majority of my time on in harmony with these priorities? My new habit is going to be to regularly ask myself the following questions which I learned long ago from an article I read by Richard G. Scott: What are my highest priorities to be accomplished while in this life? How do I use my discretionary time? Is some of it consistently applied to my highest priorities? I reckon these questions will help me focus on the things I can successfully cut out of my life so it doesn’t always seem so rushed and harried. I know it will still be hard to whittle things down, but I need to remember what Dallin H. Oaks recently counseled. There might be a lot of “good” and “better&

5 Tips For Setting Your Priorities
ONE of the hardest things to do as a stay-at-home-dad is to set your priorities. When you have a job outside the home, it is automatically a top priority. Not making it so would likely result in losing your job. Inevitably, making money is going to be a high priority for all of us. It's what allows us to put all our other priorities into perspective. In a sense, the better our financial situations are, the better we can prioritize the other areas of our lives. For me, it's not so much about making money as building tools and services that not only help others, but help myself, as well. For example, I started Dadviser in an effort to inspire fathers to be better fathers, which in turn helps me be a better dad. Being a better dad is such a high priority for me that I actually write for another fathering blog. For the majority of my life, I didn't understand my priorities very well, and as a result, I wasn't very happy. When all our priorities have equal importance, it's hard to

      Goals, Priorities, Procrastination, and Deadlines
According to Dictionary.com, the word goal was coined in 1275. (I actually thought it would have been penned earlier than that. You, too?) In contrast, the word procrastination didn't get formalized until the mid-to-late 1500's.So it sure must've been a particularly productive 300 intervening years, don't you think?!Or maybe, just maybe, they had the word procrastination all ready to go, but just kept putting it off, day after day, until someone finally put their foot down and made it a priority. (The word priority was formally recognized sometime between 1350-1400, placing it after the goal was established - and after it was probably due - but before anyone really got around to working it!)So let's review:Goals were established in the late 1200's.Some 75 years later they were made into priorities. About 150 years later people started to admit that, yes, maybe there was a bit of procrastination going on. And 450 years after that, the boss got totally fed up and invented the word,

King testified that Center had gone out of his way this year to give her tickets to games that conflicted with her schedule. And she claimed 80% of the tickets he gave her were for day games -- implying he'd done it because he knows she has skin cancer.I'm convinced that these people are either batshit crazy or complete idiots. First of all, they should not that they're fighting over tickets to the Braves. They don't sell out. And their stadium isn't all that special. So, while these tickets are costly -- after all, they're behind home plate -- it's not like they're all that.

Chairman Peterson Vows Conservation Priorities Will Be Protected
June 7 , 2007Special EditionChairman Peterson Vows Conservation Priorities Will Be Protected Addressing the sportsmen’s community at a briefing held by the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, Collin Peterson (D-MN), thanked the sportsmen’s community for the unified effort in identifying and promoting conservation priorities, and provided encouragement that conservation programs contained in the Farm Bill would be maintained. “We are getting within striking distance of making this work -- I am becoming more optimistic we can get this done,” proclaimed Peterson. “At the end of the day it is my intention to ensure the priorities of the sportsmen’s community are included in the bill.” Peterson was referring to a document prepared by the Association of the Fish and Wildlife Agencies and the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, titled "Fish, Wildlife and the Farm Bill," which includes the list of priorities put forth by more

      New Priorities
Right now, I need to completely focus on finding a job, so the Arizona posts are going to have to wait. It takes a lot of time to rewrite the stuff I have in my journal, so I'm going to put that off for now. Besides that, I have a lot of interesting things happening right now.I went for an interview today at a barn in Lyndhurst and came away feeling insulted. They were offering $7 per hour for an experience required position. I started at $7 and I didn't have any experience when I went to the Knutsens. I can't afford to pay my bills with that little money. And the older man that was there asked how long I'd been riding and when I told him a year and a half, he assumed that meant I couldn't ride at all. Fine, I don't ride well and probably not as well as he wants, but don't say I can't ride. Oh well. It was a long drive. This weekend, I'm going with Tony to Washington, D.C. for the flower show. I'm looking forward to that, even though I'm not sure what to expect.I g

      Carl Pavano knows his priorities
Yankees pitcher Carl Pavano missed his spring training start last friday because he had to be with his sick girlfriend. Pavano didn't go into details but he did say that she was doing well, again which is good to hear. "The reason I left, my girlfriend had a severe medical condition and I had to be with her," Pavano said.Pavano's girlfriend by the way is Gia Allenmand, a beauty queen that recently was profiled in Maxim magazine.Well, if I was Pavano, I would just nevermind this whole pitching thing and I'd just spend my days plowing her into oblivion. I'd have severe back problems from all the violent thrusting motions that I'd be doing. I imagine that Mulder and Scully would need to come and take a look after I'd be done with her....Mulder : "It appears that he entered her with his heel."Scully : "I think it gave her severe whiplash..."Mulder : "This is by far the most disturbing thing I've ever seen, and believe me, I've seen some crazy shit in my day."

      Top priorities
While lawmakers hammered out their proposals on performance pay, career academies and other education priorities, interim education Commissioner Jeanine Blomberg laid out the administration's goals for the 2-day-old legislative session in a speech in to Palm Beach County leaders. The four she focused on: strengthening curriculum standards, rewarding top educators, expanding professional development and expanding access to higher education. "We can't look at a snapshot of the student considering only what happened in this class, this test or this subject," Blomberg said. "We must look at these students and picture them years down the road, saving a life, teaching a student or running a business. These legislative priorities will help us achieve these goals." Energetic priorities in Poland and EU (globalwarming awareness2007 approach)
Latest surveys results are not very optimistic. Poland and the rest of the European Union has completely different Energetic priorities. It is even worse than it sounds. Poles are not interested in globalwarming awareness2007! Only 32% of Polish citizens do care about climate changes (comparing to 50% in EU) and almost 27% doesn’t realize that globalwarming is a treat (12% in EU). It is not much better when talking about using and developing modern energy-saving technologies - only 52% of people in Poland think about it, when this number in the rest of EU is approximately 20% higher… So my all dear friends in Poland - let’s change these statistics, we can care much more about our environment!

      Session priorities
Tallahassee rolls into full session tomorrow, and education remains near the top of the agenda. So we turned to a couple of different sources - a lawmaker, the teachers union and a school district - to see what they think the priorities will, or should, be. First, the lawmaker. Rep. Joe Pickens, R-Palatka, heads the House Schools and Learning Council. He says many of the ideas floating around are pipe dreams because the financial picture doesn't look too promising. Per-student funding for K-12 schools should rise modestly, Pickens said, but to keep universities on par, lawmakers "certainly will be considering a modest tuition increase" despite the governor's recommendation to keep the rate as-is. Money will, in fact, drive the key issues, Pickens said. The top priority is to deal with property tax reform, he suggested, which will impact the way schools get paid for. Issue No. 2, he said, will be setting a workable budget. He expected little more than a "continuation b

      Wine Theft and Priorities

      Priorities
Priorities It is almost unbelievable how I can still manage to write in here despite being extremely occupied. I do not like to say I am busy because I get the impression that people who keep saying they are busy simply do not know how to organize their time. Successful people always make time. I think the main concern here is what you prioritize what goes on in your life. People often do not realize how all their time passes through them so quickly. It is true that not everyone come from a favorable background for success because God did not create everyone equal in this. However, being fair, he gave the same 24 hours to everyone on this Earth. It is Gods way of telling us that because of this, we ARE equal. I just finished watching the Apprentice and Donald Trump mentioned about having priorities as well. I totally agree when he mentioned that it is not impossible to have a successful family and business life. We just have to smart in organizing our time. So that is why

Tory public transit priorities are all wrong
Funding for public transportation is woefully inadequate here in Canada. Outside of our major cities (and even in the suburbs of our largest cities), public transport does not receive enough funding. So when Stephen Harper pledged $37 million today towards public transit (part of a $80 million promise back in June), one would think that people of "non-blue" political stripes would be heaping praise on the Tories.Sadly, there is little to praise Harper about. All of the funding is to go to transport security. Not better quality public transport. Not more quantiful or convenient public transport. But "higher security" public transport.Stop me if I'm alone here, but this is the most ridiculous and unnecessary waste of money from a government supposedly obsessed with stopping government wastage. We don't have armed military on every Canadian street corner. Nor do we have CCTV installed in every nook and cranny of our cities, as the British do. So why spend so much money making publi

Glad the Democrats have their priorities straight.
I love when the Drudge Report comes up with fun things like this story. Here is the story basically:"Culture Shock on Capitol Hill: House to Work 5 Days a Week" front-paged the WASHINGTON POST in December.Majority leader Steny Hoyer said members of the House will be expected in the Capitol for votes each week by 6:30 p.m. Monday and will finish their business about 2 p.m. Friday.Explained the POST: "Forget the minimum wage. Or outsourcing jobs overseas. The labor issue most on the minds of members of Congress yesterday was their own: They will have to work five days a week starting in January." But on the morning after the night before, on the first full week of the new congress, Hoyer has pulled back from his vow! A Hoyer press release obtained by the DRUDGE REPORT boldly declares: "Monday, January 8, 2007: The House is not in session." Hill sources claim The House is taking Monday 'off' this week, because of the championship football game between Ohio State and the University of
