A world first study of Vietnam veterans' sense of smell has revealed that an inability to identify smells indicates extreme symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The results of the year-end 2007 Duke University/CFO Magazine Global Business Outlook survey are out, and CFOs from a broad range of global public and private companies shared their expectations for the U.S. economy. According to Duke University’s Office of News & Communications yesterday, the study found:
– Optimism reached its lowest point since the optimism index was launched six years ago. Pessimists outnumber optimists by an eight-to-one margin, with 72 percent of CFOs more pessimistic and only 9 percent more optimistic about the U.S. economy than they were last quarter.

The October, 2007 issue of Psychological Medicine presents a study examining the incidence of impulsive violence in war veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Based on previous research examing the role of orbitoprefrontal cortex (OFC) pathology (including impaired olfactory identification ability) in impulsive aggression, the study examined olfactory identification (OI) ability in war veterans with PTSD. Using a sample of 31 out-patient male war veterans with PTSD (mean age of 58.23 years) recruited from a Melbourne Veterans Psychiatry Unit, and 31 healthy age- and gender-matched controls (mean=56.84 years), all participants were assessed on clinical measures of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and alcohol abue. Neiman Marcus is celebrating its past with a look into the future.
To mark its 100th anniversary, the luxury retailer asked leading fashion designers to create what they see as the future of fashion. The results — everything from a black and white sequined pantsuit embellished with an enormous bow by Giorgio Armani, to a silvery evening gown from Valentino — are on display at the company’s flagship store beginning Saturday.
The creations from about two dozen designers are part of a shimmering display among jewelry and purses on the store’s ground floor. That exhibit and several others throughout the store will be on display through Nov. 3.
Ken Downing, senior vice president fashion director for Neiman Marcus, said the assignment they gave the designers was to dress women for the next 100 years.
“Who would she be? Who would be your muse? How would you dress her for the party of the century?” said Downing, who curated the “Future Fashion” exhibit.
