fMRI scans may predict anxiety patients' response to antidepressant treatment
Wouldnt it be nice if our doctors could predict accurately whether we would respond to a particular medication? This question is important because research studies provide information about how groups of patients tend to respond to treatments, but inevitably, differences among groups of patients with the same diagnosis mean that findings about groups of patients may not apply to individuals from those groups. Personalized medicine is the effort to match particular treatments to particular patients on the basis of genetic information or other biological markers. In a new article published in Biological Psychiatry, researchers report their findings on the potential use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to match treatments for patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). He did not expect troop numbers to remain at current levels, but a significant number will remain for several years in "strategic overwatch," working as advisers and providing a backstop to Iraqi troops. Cordesman said that U.S. efforts to build a central government in Iraq have proved a failure so far. "We've blown through $44 billion in U.S. aid dollars and $33 billion worth of Iraqi money." Yet, "we have no effectiveness measures and no plan to transfer what has been successful to the Iraqi government, which effectively can't spend its own national budget

      Predict By Creating
The Future is created by all the thoughts of Man in the present. Astrology helps us to foretell the future because what happens in the world of thoughts has its corresponding expression in the arrangement of the universe. Everything follows a system of cause and effect. Therefore what happens in the present will follow a perfectly orderly path that results in what the future will be like. The truth about Astrology is that the stars do not determine our fate, they merely reflect it. The same is true for any system of Divination. Since Man's thinking can be changed from time to time, the state of the Future is in constant flux. That is why whatever that is foretold by Astrology does not always come true. It is not because the prediction is inaccurate. It was indeed something that was going

NTT DoCoMo hopes to diagnose disease, predict other misfortunes from cellphones
Filed under: Networking We like to think that NTT, Japan's dominant telephone company, is a serious corporation. So when NTT DoCoMo issues a press release claiming to have successfully demonstrated the world's first "molecular delivery system for molecular communication," we figure this must be significant. The technology and biochemistry at the foundation sure seems to be. In an experiment, NTT DoCoMo confirmed the use of synthesized DNA to transport specific molecules through the body. The process converts chemical energy into mechanical work so there's no need for an external power supply or control mechanism. The hope then is to one day plant a "biochip" in a cellphone which can read "excitement, emotion, stress or disease" from the simmering juices (blood, sweat and tears) pooled insi

Major New Discovery to Predict Colon Cancer Earlier
An easily overlooked colon abnormality turns out to be likely to turn cancerous. It is more common than had previously been thought. Generally, doctors search for polyps, abnormal growths that stick out from the lining of the colon. But another type of growth is both more dangerous and harder to see because it is flat and similar in color to healthy tissue. It takes a trained and vigilant eye to see these growths, and special techniques to remove them. Colon cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in the United States, causing about 52,000 deaths a year. It is one of the few cancers that is totally preventable if precancerous growths are found and removed.

Pessimists outnumber optimists by an eight-to-one margin, with 72 percent of CFOs more pessimistic and only 9 percent more optimistic about the U.S. economy than they were last quarter. – Weak consumer demand, high labor and fuel costs, and credit market turmoil are the top concerns of CFOs. – Credit conditions have directly hurt one-third of companies, most through decreased availability of credit. – Year-end bonuses will fall by 10 percent relative to last year. – Among firms with greater than one-fourth of sales in foreign locations, more than 60 percent hav

Using Simple Rules to Predict your Retirement Needs
In prior posts, I shared some financial math tricks and demonstrated a quick way to calculate your retirement needs. Now I am going to put the two together and use these rules, along with some historical inflation data, to give you a quick estimate of annual income needed for a comfy retirement. Historical inflation data from InflationData.com The graph above shows historical inflation rate from 1913 to 2006. Here are some quick factoids: From 1913 to 2006 U.S. inflation rate averaged 3.4% From 1996 to 2006 U.S. inflation rate averaged 2.5%, slightly lower than the longer term average 10 consecutive years with the highest inflation rate was between 1973-1982 at 8.8% 10 consecutive years with the lowest inflation rate was between 1924-1933 at -2.6% (period spanning the Great Depression) Using the Rule of 72 and Rule of 115 and inflation rate of 3.4%, we can estimate that: We need 2x our current income to retire in 20 years (72 / 3.4 = 21) We need 3x our current income to retire i

Who To Replace Arena? Predict The Next Red Bulls Coach And Win!
Okay, so all I'm giving away is a blue Red Bulls T-shirt. Better than nothing, innit? More importantly, this gives you bragging rights forever and ever if you do manage to call it.Simply post a comment with who you think will get the job (and if you like, why you think he'll get it) and you're in the running. The winner will be decided when an announcement is made. If nobody manages to get it right? Then nobody wins! But there are only so many coaches out there with the necessary resume. This franchise has a history of some pretty famous ones, while not having a history of very much else (other than abject failure, perhaps).

Breakfast Links: Papabubble, Predict the Future & Humans
Papabubble comes to NYC! No, it has nothing to do with that. It’s apparently a super fancy candy store that makes it’s candy on premises. I guess it’s kinda like Dylan’s Candy Bar, but way, way, waaay more expensive. Gothamist gives the scoop. I wanna try some. You know what else I love besides candy? Quizzes. What else, you ask? The future. Fortunately, Forbes comes through with their Predict the Future quiz. It’s a pretty funny idea, they give you a quiz where you predict how things will be at the end of 2008 and then in January 2009 they will send you your results in the e-mails. Sweet! Speaking of the future, ok not the future. The past. Schneier says that humans didn’t evolve to handle security in the modern IT world. He got that right, since we all know that human’s didn’t evolve at all and we were riding around on dinosaurs a few thousand years ago. He also gets it wrong when he says “In the technology industry we like to thi

Top designers predict future fashions as Neiman Marcus turns 100
Neiman Marcus is celebrating its past with a look into the future. To mark its 100th anniversary, the luxury retailer asked leading fashion designers to create what they see as the future of fashion. The results — everything from a black and white sequined pantsuit embellished with an enormous bow by Giorgio Armani, to a silvery evening gown from Valentino — are on display at the company’s flagship store beginning Saturday. The creations from about two dozen designers are part of a shimmering display among jewelry and purses on the store’s ground floor. That exhibit and several others throughout the store will be on display through Nov. 3. Ken Downing, senior vice president fashion director for Neiman Marcus, said the assignment they gave the designers was to dress women for the next 100 years. “Who would she be? Who would be your muse? How would you dress her for the party of the century?” said Downing, who curated the “Future Fashion” exhibit.

Consortium to Identify Genetic Markers that Predict Drug-related Serious Adverse Events
The International Serious Adverse Events Consortium (SAEC) officially announced its formation this morning. The new global, non-profit partnership between leading pharmaceutical companies, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and academic institutions plans to identify and validate genetic markers that may help predict which individuals are at risk for serious adverse drug events. The goal of the consortium is to publish a set of predictive SNPs for all drug-related serious adverse events (SAEs), reducing significant patient and economic costs as well as improving the flow of safe and effective medical advances by addressing safety issues of new drugs before they reach the market. Dr. Janet Woodcock, deputy commissioner for operations at the FDA, which has been under pressure to ensure drug safety, especially following Merck’s withdrawal of Vioxx from the market three years ago, said today [1]: This is what personalized medicine is really about, finding out for the indi

New Study Uses Biofeedback to Predict a Gamer's Gameplay
Budapest University of Technology and Economics (http://www.bme.hu/en/) are using GSR Biofeedback (Galvonic Skin Response, or skin conductance) in a study where they've shown that a gamer's actions can be predicted up to two seconds before they occur. Laufer says There are quite a few situations in life where there would be a need to provide a support for making a good decision at a good time. I have military applications (pilots) in mind, but surely we can find others as well. He also sees it being used in video games Another application I have in mind could be called a frustration game This type of game could detect when a player was going to act and change gameplay to throw off the player. This type of technology could be integrated into game controlers easily. This type of technology (GSR Biofeedback) should be used in more video games, but I'm not too sure that it would be very successful if used in a manner that would frustrate game players! It coul
