The results of the year-end 2007 Duke University/CFO Magazine Global Business Outlook survey are out, and CFOs from a broad range of global public and private companies shared their expectations for the U.S. economy. According to Duke University’s Office of News & Communications yesterday, the study found:
– Optimism reached its lowest point since the optimism index was launched six years ago. Pessimists outnumber optimists by an eight-to-one margin, with 72 percent of CFOs more pessimistic and only 9 percent more optimistic about the U.S. economy than they were last quarter.
– Weak consumer demand, high labor and fuel costs, and credit market turmoil are the top concerns of CFOs.
– Credit conditions have directly hurt one-third of companies, most through decreased availability of credit.
– Year-end bonuses will fall by 10 percent relative to last year.

From 1913 to 2006 U.S. inflation rate averaged 3.4%
From 1996 to 2006 U.S. inflation rate averaged 2.5%, slightly lower than the longer term average
10 consecutive years with the highest inflation rate was between 1973-1982 at 8.8%
10 consecutive years with the lowest inflation rate was between 1924-1933 at -2.6% (period spanning the Great Depression)
Using the Rule of 72 and Rule of 115 and inflation rate of 3.4%, we can estimate that:
