      Praying for Aliyah?
Okay, so as you know, this blog started out as a place to document our journey toward aliyah. That has been put on hold temporarily due mainly to financial concerns. So, I was corresponding with Yishai Fleisher recently, just updating him as to where we stand at the moment. He told me about a blog called "Praying for Aliyah". The gist of the blog is that people who desire to make aliyah, but a

Praying parents of DKA child charged
You may remember this story from last month. An 11 year-old girl died following the complications of untreated diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Now, DKA is a serious condition and strikes fear in anyone who has diabetes. However, if recognized early, this is a treatable. And, for the most part, DKA has a good recovery rate. The parents of this child did not see it necessary to seek medical attention for their daughter. Instead, they felt that faith alone along with prayer would be enough to heal their daughter. This Associated Press story continues:Madeline Neumann died March 23 -- Easter Sunday -- at her family's rural Weston home. Her parents were told the body would be taken to Madison for an autopsy the next day. "They responded, 'You won't need to do that. She will be alive by then,"' the

The Praying Parents Charged With 2nd Degree Homicide
Occasionally, there is some good news. Dale and Leilani Neumann, who I've posted about before, have been charged with second-degree reckless homicide for praying, instead of taking their daughter to the hospital to be treated for diabetes. The Neumanns face up to 25 years in prison for essentially killing their daughter via God. One wonders what they must think now that they waited for God to heal their daughter. Are they going to use the most despised religious excuse in history? That it was God's will?Perhaps, the Neumanns should return to the real world, as opposed to their world of imaginary characters, and demonstrate the unconditional love they should have had for their children by protecting them from things such as disease. In this case, they chose their love of God over the life of

Praying for Time by Carrie Underwood
After watching the replay of Idol Gives Back this afternoon, I was drawn to play a part in a small way. Since I don't live in the US, the only way to donate is to download some songs in iTunes. Well, I went to Americanidol.com and was planning to do that but when it came to payment, I realized that my country was not listed in iTunes, this meant that I won't be able to purchase songs via iTunes. It was kinda sad for me cos I seriously loved the song, Praying for Time, sang by Carrie Underwood. She sang very well in the show and the words were truly meaningful too. So since I couldn't download from iTunes, I had gotten this from youtube. If you can, do download it at AmercianIdol.comIt's time to give back.

      Praying for Tomas Rosicky
Apparently the Czech Republic symbol, Tomas Rosicky, would lose the third Euro of his career. Or his knee is saying it.... Although Karel Brueckner is thinking about other players, I don’t think that he could avoid missing him (as Arsenal does since January 26th).Present in a national squad since 1995 (U-15) would be replaced by Jaroslav Plasil, Marek Matejovsky, or David Jarolim. Maybe Jaroslav is the man to replace Rosicky experience.Czechoslovakia was the EURO champion in 1976 and, as Czech Republic was the runner up in 1996. But this year, won’t be easy the Group A against Switzerland, Portugal and Turkey. Before crying The Czech absence, see the best of him on youtube.

      Praying for Rain
We are facing a serious drought in our neck of the woods. Friends of ours own a lake house; my first post on this blog was from Memorial Day 2006, which we spent there with them. Here is a photo from that post (my husband is the cutie driving the jet ski): See the island in the background? Here is a photo I took last weekend. The trees in the background are the same trees from the above picture: You can now walk to the “island.” Look at how low the docks are: Our friends have had to repeatedly push their dock further out and down (approximately 60 feet so far) as the water has receded. Our family has personally taken steps to reduce our water consumption. I keep a pitcher in the kitchen sink which catches water when we wash our hands or dishes. When I need to rinse a dish before putting it in the dishwasher, I use that water. We water plants with it, too, so I hope a little soap or food stuff won’t hurt them. “When it’s yellow, let it mellow&he

Man Steals Laptop While Preacher was Praying

Fidelis Obdike, who was in the process of praying with him.  Hagy was arrested by police on Wednesday after he pawned the computer, according to reports. The incident happened on Friday at the Destiny Global Ministries, in which police responded to the call by Obdike describing what happened.  Obdike told police that he bought the laptop from Carl Hagy about two weeks ago.  Then he said that Hagy came back to the church and asked to pray.  While the two where praying inside the church Hagy took the preacher’s laptop computer and left before Obdike even opened his eyes. Police later booked Hagy at the Sebastian County Jail, but he was later released on a $1,500 bond.  I am still trying to figure out how the man took the computer without Obdike hearing him.

      Praying for the Children: Prayerfulness
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. ~~ Ephesians 6:18 Grant, Lord, that my children’s lives may be marked by prayerfulness, that they may learn to “pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests” I pray that they embrace Your gift of prayer. Your gift to the strong and the weak, to the smallest child and frailest of the old. I pray they do not suffer the tragedy to go through life leaving the gift of prayer unused! I pray that they experience intimacy with You. May they recognize that though You are all-sufficient, all-powerful, and all-knowing, You desire to draw close, to communicate, to speak to them, to seek their response, to hear their prayers. Help their mother and I to nurture prayer warriors, strong soldiers for the Lord, for we need the children to pray. I ask these things in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen

God, investigate my life; get all the facts firsthand. I’m an open book to you; even from a distance, you know what I’m thinking. You know when I leave and when I get back; I’m never out of your sight. You know everything I’m going to say before I start the first sentence. I look behind me and you’re there, then up ahead and you’re there, too— your reassuring presence, coming and going. This is too much, too wonderful— I can’t take it all in! Is there anyplace I can go to avoid your Spirit? to be out of your sight? If I climb to the sky, you’re there! If I go underground, you’re there! If I flew on morning’s wings to the far western horizon, You’d find me in a minute— you’re already there waiting! Then I said to myself, “Oh, he even sees me in the dark! At night I’m immersed in the light!” It’s a fact: darkness isn’t dark to you; night and day, darkness and light, they’re a

Keep Kids From Praying At All Cost
Thankfully, a federal judge refused Monday to temporarily bar schools from observing a brief period of prayer or reflective silence for students, but he allowed a lawsuit contesting the practice to move forward. The ridiculous lawsuit was filed by talk-radio host Rob Sherman, whose 14-year-old daughter, Dawn, is a student in the district at Buffalo Grove High School. She and her father maintain that the new law is just another round in the long-running battle over prayer in school and as such violates the U.S. Constitution. The Silent Reflection and Student Prayer Act already had allowed Illinois schools to have a moment of silence at the start of every school day if they wished to do so. This month Legislators overturned Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s veto and made the moment of silence mandatory. The school district has promised to enforce the law in a “neutral” fashion making no reference whatsoever to religion. Rob Sherman has been on a one man crusade to rid the public s

      Japanese praying mantis in Shimane
鎌切、島根Japan has two main species and nine sub-species of praying mantis known commonly in Japanese as the kamakiri, but variously, also, as the tohroh, imojiri, or iibomushiri. Kamakiri literally means “sickle cut,” referring to the front legs, that to the ancient Japanese obviously more resembled someone working in the garden than piously praying.Like most Japanese wildlife, it is rarely seen in the cities, but abounds in the countryside. This specimen of a praying mantis was recently photographed in Shimane prefecture, at the westernmost tip of the main island of Honshu.True to its reputation as a predator, it fearlessly attacked the camera moments after this shot was taken, and proceeded to clamber over the camera, up the photographer’s arm and onto his head! The praying mantis, along with stag beetles and other large creepy crawlies, is a favorite with Japanese boys, who collect them mainly in the summer.Book a hotel in Japan with BookingsJapanese FictionJapan Book Sh

And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. John 20:30-31 NKJVWe are doing a sermon series in church right now, called the Miracles of Jesus. (You can find the message here, in the next few days, if you care to listen to it.) Yesterday was the first of the series, and our pastor challenged us to believe that miracles do still happen. He also gave us some of the reasons that he believes causes many of us to refrain from asking for miracles. He really made me stop and think. You see, I have been refraining from asking for a miracle, not because I don't believe it can happen, but for fear that God will say no. Because you see, if I ask, that doesn't mean it's what's in God's will for me. And if I ask, I will hope for it, and any disappointment will be that much worse for me. It reall

What is it about Utah and the Praying Mantis — do we have an abundance of bugs that make the Mantis a very happy neighborhood bug? Evie was out with me in the yard with several other dogs. We were just finishing up our going potty routine when I noticed Evie was sniffing at something on the ground like it was alive. I figured it was a leaf, blade of grass, or something like that. After watching her for a moment and seeing that her interest didn’t let up and that in fact it looked as though she might even be following something…I had to check it out. Wow! Evie had found a green stick that moved! Gently using her paw she tried to steer the green stick and move it closer to her. The green stick didn’t want anything to do with the giant furry thing

Praying the Liturgy of the Hours
The first formal activity we had on day 1 last Saturday was praying the Liturgy of the Hours with the class of 2009. We all went to the chapel (our building was constructed in 1791!), and it was beautiful. The “upper classmen” (class of 2009) had two of their members pre-chosen to Preside/lead the prayer, and a second who offered a ten-minute homily/reflection of the next Sunday’s gospel as practice. We started with a beautiful hymn being sung, which I know happens but I have never personally experienced when I do morning prayer during the week at my church. The homily/reflection was excellent! Part of me was chomping at the bit for my turn (likely in two years), part of me was in awe wondering if I could ever do that as well. I have considerable industry speaking experience, but that’s a lot different than being the vehicle for the Holy Spirit to inspire the faith of people through the Word of God! The two upper classmen were dressed as Deacons but without the sash

      Praying for Rain
Read an article in today's Johnson City Press, in which Christian singer, Michael W. Smith, urged people to fast and pray for rain. The article pointed to a prayer in time of drought posted Friday by the United Methodist Church and written by Taylor Burton-Edwards. According to the article: Burton-Edwards described prayers of this nature as appeals for help and understanding in times of crises: “What do we do here, God? We don’t know. It’s too big for us to figure out."Also in the Press this morning, another fine article about our 225th anniversary celebration this weekend. I just can't seem to keep from getting my picture in the paper. Wouldn't want any of you to think I was bashful or anything....

Praying Angel Cross Icon - My Painting For Today
I've been working on a series of large angel and Madonna icons for the Buyers Market of American Craft show next week. This is a contemplative angel, rather peaceful, her hands raised in prayer. My hubby cuts the crosses in 3/4 inch plywood. I gesso them and apply the Celtic braid in texture medium; sort of like decorating a cake. I let it dry over night then carry on with the painting. Once I'm satisfied I seal it then add the sparkling little crystals. “To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. Miracle or coincidence? - Praying to Al Pacino
I wonder if each of us, for one day, prayed to Al Pacino, how many of the things we prayed for would materialize over the next 10 years? Would any of us then conclude that Al Pacino has magical powers? That he’s a God? Granted Al Pacino is a rather fantastic actor but I doubt even he would purport to have godlike powers. Garrett Toren, Editor of ‘The Meaning of Life’ believes that his grandfather, through God, sent down a piano as he had promised to do before he died: I am sure there is a heaven, and that my Grandpa is there. Here’s why: When I was a boy, my mother gave piano lessons to augment our small income. Our piano was an old upright that was so decrepit that it couldn’t be tuned, and had several keys that didn’t play at all. We couldn’t afford a better one. My grandfather, whose name was Joseph Weber, came to spend the last few months of his life with us. I don’t know what he was suffering from, but he was very ill and couldn’t get up from his be

Praying For A Better Real Estate Market
I stumbled onto Realtors attend worship service to pray for better market in a link from my feed reader. Oh my word. Like a trillion comments on that post. I’m in two minds about this one. I do think prayer, intention, positive thinking, call it what you will, is a valuable and good thing. It’s certainly better than being a grumpy nellie and leeching the life from everything around you. I do take this side of my life somewhat seriously. But, the entire concept of a market is a rather pragmatic aspiritual thing. A market is defined as a place where buyers and sellers meet to trade. The fundamental negotiation point being price. A well run market is simply a market where there are few barriers or difficulties in making trades. If the average price in a market is going down, thats the result of the interplay of demand and supply. It’s the market working as a market. It’s meant to be able to do that. Frankly it’s never been easier to buy or

Want to See a Human Praying Mantis?
I am at the irritable point of pregnancy. (I say that in the hopes that the rest of the months ease up in this regard.) EVERYTHING gets under my skin.  And I know it’s stupid, but that doesn’t stop my temper from flaring up.  I’ve done very well to control it thus far. But this morning.. after discussing it at the store last night.. I preheated the oven to bake some muffins. (It saved me having to buy breakfast, since we already had some.) I jumped in the shower while the oven was preheating, and after I got out and was putting lotion on, I heard the clink of cereal bowls. I came out and found both of them playing video games.  And they’d already eaten (and left a mess in the kitchen). I tried not to be slighted by it, but I totally was.  I wanted to stomp around and scream and say things that I knew would hurt them.. for no good reason.  I knew that.  I knew it was stupid and I just needed to get over it.  So, instead — logically —,

Praying with Jesus in John 17:20-26 Easter 7C
Jesus' prayer in John 17 stands out revealing some of his relationship with God the Father and some of his hopes and dreams for those who would follow him. We in the church try to live out his teachings and follow his example. Prayer was a key part of Jesus' life. He went away from his friends to pray, he taught them to pray, he prayed deep into the night before his death. Prayer was as much

Debate on Virginia Tech Muslims Students' Mailing List Concerning Permissibility of Praying for Mercy for Non-Muslim Victims
The liberal Arabic-language website Aafaq reports that a Muslim student set off a debate when she sent an email to the mailing list of a Muslim students' association (rabitat al-tullab al-muslimin) at Virginia Tech asking the students to pray that Allah have mercy on those killed and wounded in the shooting attack at the university. According to Aafaq, the dean of student affairs at American International University, Abu Hamza Hijji, responded, writing that Allah the Most Merciful forbids praying for mercy for the non-Muslim dead, or even for the non-Muslim living, and that it is only permitted to pray that they be rightly guided. He added that what happened was a sad occurrence, but that does not give Muslims the right to transgress the laws of Allah the Most Merciful.More

      Praying for Peace
This has to be one of my worst nightmares, getting shot. Growing up in Dorchester, MA, I heard a lot of gunfire at night, but I never got used to it. What is going on! It seems like we should be more advanced than this: “An 18-year-old Hyde Park man was shot in the head and suffered massive injuries yesterday as he rode on a packed MBTA bus, in a chaotic scene that stunned afternoon commuters. He was on life support at Boston Medical Center early today, and police officials said he was not likely to survive. The shooting sent passengers and pedestrians frantically diving for cover and left witnesses confused about whether the gunman fired from the street or was among the small group of young men who jumped into the bus to confront the victim after arguing with him from the sidewalk. The unidentified victim, who police said was from Hyde Park and was 18, was taken to Boston Medical Center. The shooting — and a second, possibly connected fatal shooting a few hours later and n

Navy Chaplain fired for praying “in Jesus’ name.”
(*From an email received by LittleOleLady from the United States Justice Foundation. ) On Mar 1, 2007, Navy Chaplain Gordon James Klingenschmitt was fired by the U.S. Navy, ending his 16 year military career, for the “crime” of wearing his uniform to pray publicly “in Jesus name.”  He has now lost his million dollar pension.  His family was evicted from their home in military housing.  Yet he’s declaring victory…. Why declare victory?  The U.S. Congress agreed with him, and rescinded the exact same “Navy prayer policy” which was enforced against him at court-martial.  Now all other chaplains have limited freedom to pray “in Jesus name.”  His sacrifice purchased their liberty. But the Navy refuses to “grandfather” that legislative victory back to his case.  Navy lawyers still today defend that bad policy in federal court, even after it was rescinded by Congress, as a “lawful” reason to fire a sixteen year veteran, robbing his family of their hard

      Praying with Mental Purity
Recently in a corporate setting, we bowed our heads to pray and to my shame, I found it difficult to concentrate. There were too many images, thoughts and voices swirling around in my head to focus on actual prayer. A few things crossed my mind that made me recoil with disgust. To me, this was a problem. Prayer is precious. I should not be thinking of these things right now. I'm praying. Although I violently attempted to clear my mind of these disreputable thoughts, I was simply incapable of doing so. They were there, and there was nothing I could do about it. I immediately began to wonder why it was so exceedingly difficult to focus. As I examined what these thoughts were, I realized that they were the images I had seen, the thoughts I had thought and the voices that I had listened to that morning and the previous day.All of a sudden, and with the sober clarity of one regaining consciousness after being knocked out from behind, I felt the words of the apostle Paul in Philippians 4:8

      Sam Brownback: thinking, praying, exploring
Let's kick things off - for no very good reason - with Kansas Republican Senator Sam Brownback. Brownback made the news a couple of weeks ago for two reasons. First, his decision to hold up the judicial nomination of Michigan judge Janet Neff (Associated Press in the Columbia State) because Neff went to a lesbian civil ceremony once. As a guest. Four years ago. I hear Dick Cheney has put on hold his ambition to be appointed to the Supreme Court.More importantly from our point of view was this AP report - here in the Dodge City Globe (seriously - it's in Kansas) - that Brownback had "poured thought and prayer" into whether or not he should run for President, and was "very close with announcements." Brownback attempted to be coy with ABC 'This Week' host George Stephanopoulos, when asked about his plans, but Stephanopoulos interpreted Brownback's smile as a sign that he considered himself to be in the running. (I guess we can rule out the possibility that Brownback was just
