Let’s assume, for the sake of example (and just off the top of my head), that your website had, like so many others, seen a wholly unjustified loss in page rank from Google’s latest update and that you were feeling rather aggrieved about it, perhaps staring across your desktop at this Vortex Light might cheer you up knowing that, in coming with 4 USB ports, not only is this particular gadget multifunctional but you’re hardly likely to wake up the next morning to find that Google had decided to take away one of the ports for no apparent reason whatsoever.
No, actually, I take that back. Staring at this desktop Vortex Light really wouldn’t help at all.
So what have we achieved here, exactly – apart from managing to sledge-hammer in a wholly tenuous topic merely in a bid to express our frustrations?
Absolutely nothing.
Which, interestingly (I’m working hard to save this post here – bear with me) is exactly what we feel about this particular gadget.

Initially when we came across this four port USB hub complete with digital clock and an inbuilt electronic letter opener we thought it was more than a little gimmicky but now, as we write this, we’re not so sure. In fact, we would even go so far as to say that the very idea of fusing an electronic letter opener with a USB hub is actually quite a neat idea as far as desktop gadgets are concerned.
One slightly curious fact about this device, however, is that, whilst you would expect its letter opener to be powered by its USB connection it actually transpires that this functionality is powered by three AA batteries – though this, we suspect, is simply the result of the associated motor requiring more juice than the trusty universal serial bus is capable of providing.
That said, the product specifications on the website are not especially clear:
