I'm finally making the leap to .NET 3.5 and becoming an Official Visual Studio 2008 developer. Not to bore you with technicalities but the new LINQ functionality will take our online API development to the next level (allowing SQL statement filtering in XML feeds amongst other things) so as I had a bit of a window this week, I've finally upgraded.

Many people who care deeply about political issues and social justice question the efficacy of activism and being politically involved. It is a legitimate question and concern. People ask why should they bother sending an email/letter, signing a petition, or going to a demonstration. Is it a waste of time and why would someone care that you disagree and hold an alternative point of view?As someone who has been an activist for many years, I can assure you that I have seen activism to truly work wonders. Does it always work? No. You should not be discouraged when things don't go your way, and with regards to civil rights and equality it comes in strides and not in one shot. However, that being said think about how rewarding it is when you are part of the solution and you can directly

From: Fairness, idealism and other atrocities - Commencement advice you're unlikely to hear elsewhere My generation spoiled everything for you. It has always been the special prerogative of young people to look and act weird and shock grown-ups. But my generation exhausted the Earth's resources of the weird. Weird clothes -- we wore them. Weird beards -- we grew them. Weird words and phrases -- we said them. So, when it came your turn to be original and look and act weird, all you had left was to tattoo your faces and pierce your tongues. Ouch. That must have hurt. I apologize. [ ... ] 3. Get politically uninvolved! All politics stink. Even democracy stinks. Imagine if our clothes were selected by the majority of shoppers, which would be teenage girls. I'd be standing here

At least, Neha Oberoi is politically correct. The sizzling new star of Woodstock Villa will be seen, not heard in the film. No, she isn’t playng dumb, in fact she seems to be pretty intelligent, and is being intelligent about the whole thing. What we mean is that Neha Oberoi’s own voice is not what we get to hear in her debut film, it’s a professional dubbing artiste’s voice. Though she signed Woodstock Villa first, destiny ruled, as with many others before her, that her second movie, Dus Kahaniya, released first. Neha confirmed that her voice was not used. "Yes, it’s true that I have not dubbed for it," she admitted. "But why I have not been dubbed for it only the director and producer can answer." Producer Sanjay Gupta on his part explain
Turned into Holland Village, one would probably missed a minimalist store furnishing decked in white – but with its colourful slogans and buttons SCREAMING on the exterior walls, one cannot help but stand up and take notice of this new outlet in the vicinity – Frolick. Following right after another icy haven that opened in the surrounding area – Cold Rock Ice Creamery, run by savvy young owners, May Chan and Lynn Ong, Frolick opened by Mr John Tan, 25, is essentially pursing the frozen yoghurt route. At Frolick, customers are given free buttons with naughty slogans with every purchase, with mine suggesting “I Like It Topless”. This politically incorrect theme – an appeal to the now younger and rebellious generation – is also adopted in their various tabletops – “WE STAY H
The reason why I reposted the white people won’t vote for black candidate article yesterday is to take y’all back to the beginning of Obama’s campaign and how the news media wanted to bully white folks into feeling guilty about their hidden racist views.Obama is in serious trouble; therefore the Democratic Party is in serious [...]
To most black Americans “What more do you people want?” is a callow question.

What do the 2008 Presidential election, the Iraq War, and religion have in common? All these issues provoke a strong reaction in people and should be avoided when staging your home. The purpose of home staging is to transform your house into a product that is pleasing to a wide variety of buyers. For example, how many consumers boycotted Heinz ketchup when John Kerry was a presidential contender? That condiment was banned by some when associated with a political figure whom they opposed. Similarly, sellers may unintentionally sabotage a sale if they insist on showing their support to one cause or another. Obama, Hilary, McCain, and Ron Paul will not help you sell your home. When you are preparing to sell your house, be sure to remove all political signs and other propaganda from your resi
During holidays with my family, the conversation often turns to tales of 'how it was different' in previous generations. But in some ways, I think they're right. For example, in previous generations it probably wasn't that common to deliberately trash a home if you could no longer afford the payments and were losing it to foreclosure. Today, however, according to a story in the Wall Street Journal, up to half of all foreclosed homes show signs of deliberate abuse by previous owners showing strikingly toddler-like behavior. So why would this make a bailout politically difficult? Because who wants to reward extortionists who are showing the damage they will cause if their financial crises aren't made right? Is is not ironic, that this week after a long agonized speech by Senator Barack Obama on Race, Religion and Politics, some of us are talking crucifixion, resurrection and Easter?Well, it is that time of year and after what may be described as a bad week for his campaign can Senator Obama now move forward knowing that by taking the "bull by the horns" and addressing the "Race" issue, as a nation he has attempted to clear the 'air' on a very sensitive subject. Optimistic about what may change, even if in a limited way, I am pleased that Obama made the speech he did, even if a back-lash prove/looks politically toxic at this time. It is an uncomfortable topic for most people to talk about, but the issue cannot/should not be swept under the proverial "rug".On that note, one hopes he can continu

Frank and John take aim at the oppressive tone of political correctness that has already warmed over the US election campaign for President. Marshal Petain, aka John McCain, throws a talk radio host under the bus this week for merely saying Obama the Jungleboy's middle name during a campaign rally, which just happens to be "Hussein".Frank points out how the PC tone is really all about the liberal MainStream Media now having an excuse to give Obama a free pass during this election. Any criticism of Obama - his links to Mohamadean groups and corrupt political fundraisers, for example - will all be silenced by the label of "racist" being put on anyone who brings these things up. Once firmly entrenched in power, the Bolsheviki running things behind Obama's back will take away things such as th

People are going overboard (way overboard!) with political correctness, and now, dogs in Wales are following suit. The UK’s K9 Magazine is reporting that North Wales Police are now training their police dogs to headbutt rather than bite criminals.
Officers say the toothless tactic provides a safer way to tackle uncooperative offenders, and dog squads may soon adopt it across the country. But critics say it is another example of political correctness gone mad - putting the rights and safety of criminals before cutting crime and protecting the public.
[…]
‘Instead of biting, the dog is muzzled and launches itself like a missile at the midriff of the target,’ said Deputy Chief Constable of North Wales, Clive Wolfendale.

The scheme was launched after the Association of Chief Police Officers published a paper for dog handlers on human rights. In it, police dog handlers in a position where they are considering setting their dog after a suspect should ask a
When I arrived The Rooster was wearing a hand painted, paper and pipe cleaner pilgrim bonnet.[The latest in haute pilgrim!]While the girls wore bonnets, the boys in Rooster's class donned tall, stiff pilgrim hats made from black and white paper with exaggerated front buckles. The Rooster led me to my seat at the daycare Thanksgiving lunch. At my seat a brown paper turkey placeholder said "Guest of The Mayor and The Rooster." The Mayor was already seated. The Mayor and all his classmates wore headdresses, brown construction paper bands with three different colored paper feathers stapled to the back.I assumed I was dining with a band of tiny pilgrims and a slightly taller group of Native Americans. "Do you like my hat?" Rooster asked."I do!" I told her. "You make a great pilgrim."Not wanting to be left out, The Mayor said, "Do you like my hat too?" "I do!" I said. "Are you a Native American?"The Mayor rolled his eyes. "No, Mom. I'm a turkey butt!"Ah, yes. I guess I knew that.

Many of you know what I think of the Yukon Government as a corporate entity. From the former heroin trafficker Premier to the nationally-famous hiring practices, I have nothing good to say about it. That’s why I’m very pleased to see a new blog devoted to airing the dirty laundry that originates there. The first post at Yukon Confidential confirms it as a regular on my browsing list.
The reason that I used the term “the Yukon Government as a corporate entity” is that my dealings with the front-line employees at several offices have been consistently positive. Despite the conditions they work under, there are some fine Yukoners working at Motor Vehicles, Highways, Land Titles and Community Services in particular. But having worked for the government for 4 years, I know the other side, and that bad taste will never go away.

The coverage yesterday of Duane Chapman, star of TV's Dog the Bounty Hunter and the 'N-word'-spiked tape from his cellphone conversations about his son's black girlfriend seemed familiar. Dog wasn't the first to put his foot into his mouth. Here's a quick look at media celebrities who did it before Dog.Arts and Entertainment Network immediately announced that production of "Dog the Bounty Hunter" had been suspended. Later news clarified that the show hadn't been canceled, only pulled off the air. Chapman said that he was "sorry" and wanted to meet with black leaders to "make things right". The rehabilitation began for Dog.There is a template for this type of incident: 1-commit a faux pas;2-discovery of said remark;3-media amplification;4-public remorse by the personality;5-meetings with "leaders" in the offended community6-drop out of sight for awhile; sometimes enrolling in some sort of counseling.7-and finally, rehabilitation.Sometimes it works, sometimes not.Dog was only the
Heart throb for the over 60s gives us his Harrison Ford PoutBefore Ms Fiona " I have family connections" Godlee, Richard Smith ran the British Medical Journal with an incredible amount of sassy style. Clad in his grubby leather jacket, Richard Smith kicked some ass in the medical profession. Since his departure and that of his colleague Kamran Abassi, we have been force-fed feminist issues by Godlee and her team. Doctors have continued to throw the BMJ in the bin and opted for the better Hospital Doctor. Anyway, Richard has appeared again to criticise everyone. He is though very right. He tells the profession to basically get its act together and stop squabbling between themselves. The article can be read here. "Dr Richard Smith called for wholesale reform of the bodies that represent doctors in the wake of the failures in doctor training systems. A report by Sir John Tooke in to Modernising Medical Careers and the Medical Training Application Service (MTAS) found a string of failures

I understand children are now taught in school that Christopher Columbus is someone to be detested instead of revered. Teachers instruct their pupils to believe that Christopher Columbus was a tyrannical person who enslaved peaceful native people. In truth, Christopher Columbus deserves considerable praise, and is worthy of a Federal holiday.Without a doubt, one of the most influential moments in the history of the World was the European discovery of America. It led to the spreading of a civilized European Culture throughout the World. It also ultimately led to the founding of the United States. The United States since its founding has created more prosperity for the common man than any Nation in the history of the World. Consequently, without Christopher Columbus’ dangerous voyage and courage, America and its greatness would not be here today. That in of itself justifies a national Christopher Columbus Day.For those of you who may be wondering if I am insinuating that the nativ

Kolkata ( Calcutta ) : The agitation upholding the cause of agriculture in India by resisting industrialisation is politically motivated, Ratan Tata said today.Replying to a shareholder’s question at the annual general meeting of Tata Tea in Calcutta, Tata said those leading the agitation should do something for agriculture instead. “Why is there farmers’ suicide in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra?” he asked. He went on to add that people who wanted farmland to be reserved for agriculture should ensure farmers and those depending on agriculture did not live below poverty line.He lamented the bid to delay the small-car project in Singur. “It’s getting delayed. But we are trying to do what best we can to meet our target.”Tata Motors had said it would roll out the first car by the second half of 2008.The government’s delay in handing over the 997-acre plot — because of protests over land acquisition — and waterlogging at the site during monsoon has slowed down the work.T

When events cause someone to rethink their political beliefs, it can be a sobering process. Part of you is so entrenched that you are almost self-apologetic. All of my life I have been a moderate in terms of social issues. In the 1980's, I was part of a letter writing campaign and subsequent public march protesting the Apartheid policy in South Africa. I stood on the side of equality when it came to minority rights in Canada. I was even in favour of the immigration policies throughout that decade and into the 1990's and beyond. Now, I find myself forced to rethink my pro-libertarian stance. And that ain't easy.It has become blatantly obvious that the open door policy that many of the Western nations have had regarding immigration, along with the poisonous injection of political correctness into our culture (especially in Canada) has left us almost completely vulnerable and flat-footed against the new and vicious threat to our freedom. The New World War isn't being fought in some far-

The prosecution of seven Marines accused in the killings of 24 Iraqi civilians in Haditha is so politically motivated they cannot be guaranteed a fair trial, a Marine officer said in testimony played in court Wednesday. Capt. Jeffrey Dinsmore, who was the intelligence officer for the battalion accused in the Nov. 19, 2005 killings, was called as a witness at the preliminary hearing for Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani, one of four officers charged with dereliction of duty for failing to investigate the deaths. "You told me that politically, the Marine Corps had made a decision to hang Lieutenant Colonel Chessani out to dry," prosecutor Lt. Col. Sean Sullivan asked Dinsmore. "Yes," he replied. Dinsmore, whose testimony was videotaped in March, said he doubted prosecutors could be objective given the political climate surrounding the case, and said Chessani was "above reproach." Sullivan said his job as a prosecutor was to ensure justice was done fairly. The Haditha killings sparked the biggest

The group has also decided to set up the chemical industrial SEZ at a “politically-correct location” in a clear bid to make the process hassle-free. Salim Group’s proposed projects will be executed by New Kolkata International Development (NKID) — a special purpose vehicle jointly formed by the Salim Group, Prasun Mukherjee’s Universal Success and Unitech. This is a piece written by Michelle Malken. In it she describes how some schools are holding mock terrorism drills. Sounds like a good idea, doesn’t it? We can gauge our preparedness for such an event. The only problem is that political correctness has crept into them. Instead of radical Muslims they are using wacko homeschoolers, and radical right wing Christian Republicans. What is wrong in this country when you can’t call the terrorists what they are? I don’t know if this is being done for PC reasons,or if it is just another attack on Christianity. Christianity is the only religion that it is okay to attack.
Look what this type of appeasement has led to in Europe. A judge in Belgium ruled a Muslim man could beat his wife because it was in the Koran. This is sharia law, and it is now legally practiced in a non Muslim country.
England cannot fly her flag at Heathro airport, or over prisons so they won’t offend Muslims.

I have nothing against people who practice their religion - because I want others to respect my belief (non-belief for that matter) system — but when individuals overstep the boundaries of their freedom and express utterly presumptuous and insensitive things, I quickly lose my patience. I’m perfectly fine with prayers. People could recite the entire rosary and complete ten novenas in front of me and I wouldn’t really feel any different. It becomes a totally different matter though when people fail to exercise their discretion in choosing the words for their publicly-aired prayers.
The following is a transcript of the prayer read during the invocation.

Studying NLP or hypnosis it usually gives an extra dimension to the appreciation of language. NLPers become increasingly aware of embedded commands, hypnotic suggestions or unwitting implications that slip into their own and other people's language. This is great. It allows for really precise communication, sometimes...On the other hand since some NLPers can be relentlessly positive there can also be a shadow side to this. Intelligent, sensitive aware people who are still often human in some of the most petty ways. So just like the euphemisms used in Human Resources or the military, I have observed some interesting ways of hiding barbs in NLP based language.Below are some examples of the correct NLP way to say something, and its translation into something more... sincereNot all NLPers do this, and not allo f the time. But when they do you can usually tell by the slightly forced quality of the smile they put on while speaking. 'Your map is different from mine' = 'You're wrong!''
The Gobal Language Monitor, a nonprofit group that studies word usage, has picked the word ‘macaca’ as the most politically incorrect word of the year.
Chances are very good that Senator George Allen’s use of the racial epithet ‘macaca’ when referring to a Democratic activist of Indian descent was the reason the Republican’s lost control of the Senate, so the soon to be former Senator also wins Hammer’s Biggest Idiot of the Year award, narrowly beating out Michael Richards (Kramer from Seinfeld) and his “N” word tirade at the Laugh Factory.
Put a fork in their asses, because they’re both done.
First it was Darrel Reid. A typical social conservative who was regarded as "extreme" by Canada's opposition parties. Apparently they've written off much of the evangelical vote. And for good reason. Now it's Don Cherry's turn. They're calling a national hockey icon a racist who should not be regarded as a distinguished Canadian for saying this:In 2004, Cherry questioned the toughness of French players during a Coach's Corner segment on Hockey Night in Canada.
