I read this L.A. Times article about the presidential candidates' handwriting, and I am of two minds about it. Three and half decades later its membership has grown to over six thousand, making it the largest church in the United Church of Christ denomination. In addition to Sunday services of worship, Trinity United Church of Christ supports numerous ministries in the poor neighborhood that surrounds it: tutoring for kids, programs for women’s health, ministry to people with HIV/AIDS, providing food for the poor, prison ministry, a senior citizens home and others. From the beginning of his ministry Reverend Wright was determined that the Church at worship would also be the Church that served the least of the brothers and sisters in the world that surrounds it. Chicago’s Political Machine Runs Relatively Swimmingly in Strawdog Theatre’s ‘Old Town’
CHICAGO – As a testament to its set design, it wasn’t immediately clear if certain structures were naturally part of the Strawdog Theatre space or if they were fabricated specifically for the “Old Town” production. It turned out to be the latter as this story of Chicago’s political machine unfolded with song, dance, wit, a relatively large cast and a 10-piece live band. In double-sworded fate, this relatively large cast turned out to be both a blessing and also its burden. The story’s set at a fictional hotel on election night where the Weltz dynasty wrangles with the Chicago voting public. Despite characters galore, Kat McDonnell as Cindy Weltz – the daughter of the man who’s currently running but just can’t cut it – melts nearly everyone else away. Karen Mosher (Sha

agree with Barack that getting rid of the gas tax isn't going to do crap for us. All the oil companies will do is say, hey, now we can charge 6 cents more. I don't necessarily agree that we need to develop alternative fuels, we need rearrange our lifestyles and change the fact that we need so many cars. Just the idea of a fuel to burn is wrong, even hydrogen is stupid. We'd be wasting energy converting electricity into a liquid form when we could just NOT turn it into hydrogen and save all of that energy. We don't need alternative fuels, we need alternative energy and to be more efficient energy in general. We need to be smart. (sigh) It's not that great of an ad except for that last line. "And you thought no one could be worse than George Bush", that kills me.

EPA's Scientists Regularly Pressured or Ignored for Political Reasons — UCS Investigation
A couple months ago I posted about how the EPA overruled its own experts and denied California's plan to address greenhouse gas emissions from cars and trucks. Well this pattern of using politics, rather than science, to create rules and justify actions by the EPA has infected the agency to a dangerous degree, according to a new report. The Union of Concerned Scientists, concerned about how the EPA's decisions "have too often led to the suppression and the distortion of the scientific findings underlying those decisions," took on the task of investigating the treatment of EPA scientists and how their work was used. After a comprehensive survey of over 1500 EPA scientists, UCS found that 60% of the had encountered at least one instance of political interference in the previous five years.

Curiouser and Curiouser: State Department Political Clue/Cluedo
Obama, Clinton, and McCain: Breached Passport Information and Mrs Plum with the Gun in the Kitchen...or not.The Obama Campaign, though publicly outraged, privately must have breathed a sigh of relief when the news broke. The focus on Reverend Wright and his incindiary remarks moved to the back burner last Thursday as The Washington Times reported that the Senator's passport information had been breached. The press went wild with the story, and upper level State Department officials couldn't seem to get their story straight. One official said the violations hadn't been reported up the chain of command, while another said that on the dates of the Obama passport violations investigations were initiated by officials at the State Department. Confusion abounded and questions began to be ask

Ortega’s Direct Democracy, or Political Machine?
Nicaragua’s right-wing opposition has “started to organize against what it claims is President Daniel Ortega’s similar [to Venezuela] intentions to consolidate power in this country” according to a recent Tim Roger’s article “Nicaraguan opposition resists Chavez’s expanding ‘revolution…’” Rogers writes, “Mr. Ortega, an ally of Venezuela’s president, has promised to implement his own version of ‘direct [...]

      British political parties
This would not be so bad if the political parties actually represented a large proportion of the public, but in fact it is just the opposite, as their policies have become evermore detached from those that interest the majority of the public, they have been bleeding members, as voters have found the party they once felt best represented their view with its raft of policies now no longer fits the bill. Now the parties combined membership represents only about 1% of the public. This means the parties do not have a mass support and do not have a mass input into the formation of their priorities on which they build their policies.

WSJ's Michael Yon takes a leak on conventional political wisdom: "Let's 'Surge' Some More"
"Let's 'Surge' Some MoreBy MICHAEL YONApril 11, 2008; Page A17It is said that generals always fight the last war. But when David Petraeus came to town it was senators – on both sides of the aisle – who battled over the Iraq war of 2004-2006. That war has little in common with the war we are fighting today.I may well have spent more time embedded with combat units in Iraq than any other journalist alive. I have seen this war – and our part in it – at its brutal worst. And I say the transformation over the last 14 months is little short of miraculous. The change goes far beyond the statistical decline in casualties or incidents of violence. A young Iraqi translator, wounded in battle and fearing death, asked an American commander to bury his heart in America. Iraqi special forces unit

Book Review: "State Terrorism and Political Identity in Indonesia"
Author: Ariel HeryantoApproximately one million innocent Indonesians were killed by their fellow nationals, neighbours and kin at the height of an anti-communist campaign in the mid-1960s. This book investigates the profound political consequences of these mass killings in Indonesia upon public life in the subsequent decades, highlighting the historical specificities of the violence and comparable incidents of identity politics in more recent times.Contrary to the general notion, state terrorism was a common, persistent and basic mode of rule in the 20th century with a diversity in scope, intensity, duration and style. In many societies today it is close to having the status of a standard rather than aberrant mode of state rule. It has, at least on the surface, some modern and rational e

Associated Press Uses Political Correctness to Protect Cheney
For years, the right wing has complained about political correctness as the preserve of the left.  The "debate" about political correctness often descends into nonsense, and I don't think the term itself is very useful.  However, I find it interesting and revealing when the media uses euphemisms to make the Bush administration's conduct sound more benign than it actually is.  An example yesterday: the Associated Press refused to use precise words when describing recent news (not really "news" to most who have followed this) about high level Bush administration officials, including Vice President Cheney, approving the use of torture. The AP story blandly reported that "Cheney, Others Ok'd Harsh Interrogations."  A "harsh interrogation" sounds like someone on Law and Order using words

'The two party corporate political system is having a HOMELAND presidential campaign—Hillary, Obama, McCain, Election, Lacking, Actual, National, Debate'
From: An Election Without Meaning   The 2008 presidential race is a media entertainment spectacle with props, gossip, accusations, and public relations. It is impression management from a candidates' perspective. How can we fool the most people into believing that we stand for something? It is billions of dollars of gravy for the media folks and continued profit maximunization for the war machine, Wall Street, and insurance companies no matter who is determined the winner in November.  We must face the fact that the US government's primary mission is to protect the wealthy and insure capital expansion worldwide. The US military—spending more than the rest of the militaries of the world combined—is the muscle behind this protect-capital-at-all-costs agenda, and will
