      Stop being so polite!
Today we dip once more into the "Who The Hell Are They?" files for another sweet tune by some guy...... this one from a remix compilation on San Francisco's Wide Hive Records, a label specializing in the kind of Hip-Hop you'd expect to be made in S.F.... namely the jazzy and cerebral kind. The producer goes by the name of Dissent, which quite frankly is a pretty lame name if you want to be all po

Album Review: Egg - The Polite Force (1971)
I recently took a big gamble and spent $30 on a Japanese import album by a UK artist from which I had never heard an LP. Having just discovered the Canterbury scene over the past year or so I had heard all of the classic Soft Machine, Caravan, Matching Mole, Gong, Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt, Hatfield and the North, National Health, etc., but had never managed to get a hold of an Egg album. Beyond Kids' Rocking Chairs - Can You Raise a Polite Kid in This Boorish World? - Today's kids believe that being tough or uncouth is smarter than being well-mannered and be called a wimp. Weak or just being polite!
I write today in place of a good friend, she feels frustrated regarding this particular issue and would like to vent and i purposed to do that on her behalf, after all its a problem most of us face, and very frequently if not on daily basis.Am i weak if i decide to address someone properly and give them respect when normally they are not even worth the time or effort. Don't believe so.Before anyone jumps to conclusion on me being weak, I'm a 6'2, 300 lbs, box playing (used to play), wrestling trained , american footballer. and for those who argue that its all about heart i got miles and miles of heart and got the scars to prove it. Not to mention a loud voice that pretty much stops ya dead at ur tracks. (i know.. how can someone so great live and never hear about). So pretty much if i did s

LTC John Nagl, 1st Battalion, 34th Armor at Fort Riley, and author of “Learning to Eat Soup with a Knife: Counterinsurgency Lessons from Malaya and Vietnam,” (his published Doctoral Dissertation) appeared on The Daily Show on Thursday 8/23. Video from the interview is available at Small Wars Journal. A synopsis of the episode is available at TV.Com, includes a few quotes, but unfortunately no transcript. Global Guerrillas notes in its post regarding the appearance: “Wow, the Petraeus information operations media machine is amazing (and this is a great example). Nod of respect to the masterful way in which the Petraeus team has been able to influence the public's perception of this war -- the essence of which was a shift towards marketing the Iraq leadership as both competent and brilliant.” Missing from the post is this parenthetical from FeedBurner: “(which is much more effective than the political diatribes that claim MSM bias, a conspiracy of the lef

Saying “thank you”: how being polite can be romantic
It’s funny but true: a lot of the best romantic ideas for adding more love and excitement to your marriage or relationship are things you were taught in kindergarten!  Make a daily “thank you” one of your romantic habits! Is being polite romantic?  Of course it is!  And in addition to learning how to say you’re sorry, simply telling your husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend “thank you” on a regular basis can actually improve your relationship and add more romance to your life. So, why is it romatic to say thanks?  As I’ve said before, a romance isn’t about huge, overwhelming, infrequent gestures; instead, a relationship is made fulfilling, exciting and rewarding by adding small, subtle, consistent acts to your everyday life.  And saying “thank you” on a regular basis, whenever it is appropriate, is one of those small, subtle things that add to the overall romantic aura of your relationship. Let’s face it: people

Report from Paris’ Lawyer: “She’s Being Polite and Gracious”
Damn, the slut’s in jail and getting more press than she ever got in the free world! Her lawyer, Richard Hutton, is reporting to various news and media outlets that Paris is”doing very well under the circumstances,” and he goes into detail about how, due to her status as a big time celebrity, she her 23-day sentence will drag on and seem like 23 YEARS because she has to be in solitary confinement (or what he calls “administrative segregation”) for 23 out of 24 hours … everyday! She can’t mingle with the general population. The only “hour” she has outside of her 12×8 ft (pretty damn small!) is to “be in the module, take a shower and talk on the phone.” Damn, the price of fame is pretty high! In other Inmate #9818783 news, Madame Tussauds has updated their wax figure of Paris to reflect her current situation in the slammer! It’s pretty funny, but what would make it funnier is if her outfit reflected the

      Polite & courteous young stars
STARBYTES By Butch Francisco The other day, I wrote about how most of today’s new breed of stars are lacking in manners and hardly show any respect for people ahead of them in this business. Fortunately, we still have a few young stars who are polite and courteous. Here is my personal list. Alfred Vargas — His parents and the Jesuits did a good job on him. He best exemplifies what proper education does to a person. Pauleen Luna — She can swap jokes with people older than her, but without being disrespectful. Dennis Trillo — He is Mr. Manners. Anywhere he sees you, he always has his hand extended to say hello. Richard and Raymond Gutierrez — Very charming like their Ate Ruffa. They have the gentlemanly ways of their father Eddie and the warmth of Mom Annabelle (when she’s not on the warpath). Lovi — Totally well-bred. If only all young stars could be like her. Camille Prats — I knew her as a kid when we were with ABS-CBN. She brought her nice ways over when she moved to

If you’ve come here expecting polite discussion, ...
If you’ve come here expecting polite discussion, you might want to look elsewhere.I grew up hearing the generally held edict: “One does not discuss politics or religion in polite society.” I listened. And never learned much about either until…..I was introduced to a group of evangelical Christians in my teens; they were very nice people who told me that God loved me and forgave my sins through his son, Jesus. Since, at 17 years old, I had an infinite list of mortal crimes to feel guilty ofI bought it. I became a True Believer. And I never learned about how or what other people believed.I was taught in school that America was the greatest country on earth. I dutifully placed my hand over my heart and pledged my allegiance to this great nation’s flag day after day throughout my formal brainwashing….(er, I mean schooling.) I believed that our government was to be trusted to insure peace, freedom and the pursuit of happiness.Well, maybe I got a bit carried away on my pursuit of

why be rude when you can be polite
When someone frustrates you, it's so easy to fall back on being rude, it almost feels nice to tell them exactly what you think with any word that appropriately describes your feelings at the time. Very easy but not so smart. When dealing with another business being 'polite' will save you a lot of time and get you what you want. The problem with being rude, it only makes you feel good for a minute then you have the great pleasure of watching an often self destructive domino effect. The person you are 'rude' to will naturally not be as helpful the next time, this will annoy you even more, so you'd probably get 'rude' again, this gets their back up, the next time they probably won't be too receptive to you again and what would you do? get even ruder. Well this could go on and on and of course eventually you'd tell everyone you know about this company that sucked. Then you'd move on to another company, one day they'd do something that annoys you and you'd get 'rude' again

      The Polite Way to Decline
My kids have been brought up to know better than to say they don't 'want' a certain meal. I do not care. I refused to raise children that could eat nothing but hotdogs and macaroni and cheese. We have a three-bite rule and only after three bites can they tell me they don't like something. Fair enough. If after three bites you don't like it, you don't have to finish it. I will probably make it again in the future and you will be expected to try it again in the future. Because of this way of raising the children I am blessed to have kids that love everything from bruchetta to guacamole and shrimp scampi to oyster stew. Not wanting to be rude they sometimes come up with rather imaginative ways of expressing their displeasure with a planned meal. This afternoon would be one of those times.Coffeegirl: "What are we having?"Me: "Linguine with clam sauce and homemade cheesy garlic bread."Coffeegirl thinks for a moment and then replies; "You mean you are going to sacrifice th

He was actually mic'd up for this particular game, so you can catch him wishing his opponent (Raitis Ivanans) luck before he drops the gloves. I fully expect Laraque to be an enormous fan favorite the minute he dons a Penguin sweater.
