Suicide do's and dont's: Eight drugs, poisons, and other chemicals that you shouldn't use to kill yourself
I did a post on this topic when I first started this blog, but it needed improvement. Behold, improvement!Disclaimer: Yeah, this post is pretty tasteless. However, it should be noted that I am in no way condoning suicide with this post. I am, in fact, merely pointing out why trying to kill yourself with the following compounds is a really bad idea.8. When In Doubt - Check It Out! A recipe calling for 20 nutmeg nuts poisons it's readers!
Something you'll read over and over again in my recipe blog is the fact that I always want my readers to use their recipes as a 'guide' and to have fun and adjust amounts to their tastes. I say this so often my regular readers are probably tired of hearing it but it is just so true! That is why I love to also suggest getting 2 or 3 similar recipes for a certain food item and using them as your g

EPA - "Children Act Fast . . . And So Do Poisons"
Helpful EPA facts on poisons and kids: PHILADELPHIA (March 26, 2008) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises parents and caregivers to keep potentially harmful products locked up and in a high cabinet out of the reach of children. Poison Prevention Month is observed each March to increase awareness of the danger to children of accidental poisoning from pesticides and household products.   U.S. poison control centers receive a call every 15 seconds about an accidental poisoning. The National Safety Council records show that more than 50 percent of the nearly 2.5 million poisoning incidents each year involve children under six years of age. Most are due to children swallowing common household items like prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, cosme

      Poisons, Poisons, Everywhere!
By Deb M. Eldredge, DVMThe ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center recently released a list of the ten most common poisons that dogs ingest. What is immediately striking about the list is how ordinary each of the poisons is—most of us have these compounds in our homes or garages. The list is a reminder that it is important to keep medications and potentially toxic items locked up or stored safely away from our pets. Here is a list of the toxins that you need to keep out of your pet’s reach: (more......)Ibuprofen Ibuprofen is a widely used human non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. In dogs, this medication can cause stomach and kidney problems and even impact the nervous system causing symptoms such as depression and seizures. If you drop a pill, be very careful to find it before your dog

God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything by Christopher Hitchens
Book Description ISBN-0446579807 God is getting bad press lately. Sam Harris' The End of Faith(2005) and Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion (2006) have questioned the existence of any spiritual being and met with enormous success. Now, noted, often acerbic journalist Hitchens enters the fray. As his subtitle indicates, his premise is simple. Not only does religion poison everything, which he

The pharm + tox lecture series: #2 - Drugs, medications, and poisons (Oh my!)
The name of this site is a misnomer. Sad but true. You see, technically, poisons ARE drugs, so it's pretty silly to make a distinction between them ('Drugs and Poisons'). It's a shame, but at least I wasn't writing a textbook or something. The definition of a drug is shrouded in caliginous gloom. Actually, it's not that bad (I just wanted to use the word caliginous), but it certainly isn't clear-cut. The key feature of a drug is that it alters in some way the function(s) of an organism when introduced into an organism's body. In a broad sense, food can be considered a drug.It can get tricky. Estrogen naturally produced in people's gonads is not a drug, but it becomes one once it is packaged into birth control pills.Anyway, way back in the sixteenth century, this Swiss fellow named Paracelsus (oh for the days of one-word names) introduced an intriguing concept: All drugs are poisons. Any drug, regardless of how benign it may seem, when given in a sufficiently high enough dose, w

Q & A #3 - Cannabis and cancer, tasteless poisons, and getting high
It's been a while since I've done one of these questions and answers sessions, but I seem to recall people enjoying them and I'm beginning to feel that familiar old research itch coming on. It's either that or all the blackfly bites I got this past long weekend (yay Canada!) decided to make their presence known simultaneously. To recap: I monitor the crazy things that people type into search engines that bring them to this site, pick out the most intriguing questions that people searched for, and then attempt to answer them with my trademark wit and dry humour. Check out the first and second installments of this exciting feature for more Q & A goodness. Onward! Is THC carcinogenic?Tetrahydrocannabinol, better known by it's acronym THC, is the primary compound in cannabis that is responsible for getting you high. THC on its own is not carcinogenic. In fact, it's pain-killing, anti-puking, and appetite-promoting (see: the munchies) properties make it an effective adjuvant to cancer

Teh Overdose: Drugs and poisons that you shouldn't kill yourself with
Disclaimer: Yes, this post is pretty tasteless. However, it should be noted that I am in no way condoning suicide with this post. I am, in fact, merely pointing out why overdosing on the following compounds is a really bad idea.AcetaminophenAlso commonly known as paracetamol, APAP, and Tylenol, is the most common cause of intentional self-poisoning in adults since it is widely available and cheap. What doesn't appear to be well known is that at high doses this drug is selectively toxic to the liver. If you end up dying, it is only after spending several days in intense pain. This form of poisoning can be treated with N-acetylcysteine (NAC).ParaquatA bipyridylium herbicide found in many weed control products (e.g. Gramoxone), if ingested in sufficiently large quantities it will cause multisystem organ failure with death occurring within hours to a few days. However, should you fail to drink enough of it, it will selectively accumulate and persist in your lungs and slowly digest them wh
