Here is a brief info about The Plague, courtesy Wikipedia.
The Plague (Fr. La Peste) is a novel by Albert Camus, published in 1947, that tells the story of medical workers finding solidarity in their labour as the Algerian city of Oran is swept by a plague epidemic. It asks a number of questions relating to the nature of destiny and the human condition. The characters in the book, ranging from doc
NEW YORK, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Rating errors for auto insurance policies resulted in the loss of $16.1 billion in premium revenues in 2007, an industry research group said Friday. For a dysfunctional American family, a bonding trip to the Irish countryside is about to go very, very wrong. Folksy locals have a sinister agenda. The forest is filled with packs of giggling, deformed children who enjoy playing sadistically depraved games. In a previous blog I wrote about the plague column to be found in the town square in Cesky Krumlov. I walked past it today and as ever it was surrounded by tourists oblivious to its presence. I however was not. In fact I find I am always aware of it and what it signifies. I find history is constantly impinging on my consciousness in this place – a bane of being a historian by training perhaps.

A new University of Alberta study of almost 600 of its graduates (ages 20-29 years old) tracked mental health symptoms in participants for seven years post-graduation and looked at how key events like leaving home and becoming a parent were related to depression and anger. Graduates showed a significant decrease in depre

The following vital information is, frankly, frightening, as it means that we have entered into a new world of disease never before imagined. This is not a conspiracy theory. When you read what follows, you will understand why this issue may already be known by a select few, but kept from the public domain. The issue has to deal with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Over the last several decades, obesity and diabetes have become epidemic. Children, adults, poor people, wealthy people, Americans, Africans - all over the world people are becoming obese and developing diabetes. We are concerned that the current epidemic of obesity and diabetes may be caused by a new problem, never before considered because it never before existed. Of course, when you think of the cultural/lifestyle causes of obes

It was quite an action today in the markets, which all started yesterday and continued in the morning in anticipation of the upcoming rate cut by the U.S. Fed. The Fed did not dissappoint most of the more rational market players, cutting its Fed Funds rate by a healthy 75 bps, which brought down the rate to a meager 2.25%. The many tourists that throng the Town Square in Cesky Krumlov often ignore the large column set to one side and surrounded by statues. They may sit on its steps and take photos of each other, some may even photograph the column, but most have no idea what it is and what it commemorates. It is a plague column set up to remember a plague epidemic that hit the town in the early 1680's. At the top of the column stands the Virgin Mary and around it there are saints who traditionally offer protection against the plague. This was not the first time the town had devastated by the plague, the town had also experienced the terrible impact of the bubonic plague in 1585.It reminds me of an early introduction to Czech culture I had back in 1982 before I met my Czech puppeteer friend. I love the holiday season, but I'm frustrated. With all the giving in the air, we've suddenly become inundated with good will and are drowning in a sea of books, videos, shoes, and clothes in so many sizes we could outfit a store. But we still need some things, like a size 14 pair of snow pants. Instead we have sizes 3-6 months, 12 months, 3Ts, and 7s which are useless and taking up space. All of this is not good will's fault. These things were already accumulating despite careful intake because I was trying to be a good steward and not squander what God had given to us. But there is a fine line between good stewardship and hoarding.Several years ago I ran clothing giveaways in our church that had little storage room. It was constantly so saturated with donations, mounds of clothing bags fell out of closets and overflowed into other work areas. It looked horrible and made a bad impression on church members and the community. People complained, but the ministry head was afraid if we l

There's nothing worse than seeing all of your hard work destroyed by a rose disease or fungus. Roses can be weakened during the winter dormancy and become more susceptible to disease when the growing season begins.
Even if the bush survived winter unscathed, spring rains and summer's heat and humidity can open the door to a variety of fungus infections.
Here is a summary of the most common
Something you aren’t told about in the travel brochures… sandflies. The West Coast of the South Island and in particular the lower half of the island are plagued with these biting little pests all summer long.
They are found in large cloud like quantities along river, lakes and beaches. Their bite causes a small mosquitoes like red lump but with the added annoyance of an insatiable itchiness. Milford Sound is plagued with sandflies together with most of Fiordland National Park.
A recent story of a Swedish tourist who became lost while camping illustrates the gravity of this pest. The tourist left the camping ground to escape from the clouds of sandflies that had invaded his camp.
The tourist became disorientated after going in the wrong direction resulting in an unscheduled overnight stay in the bush.
Police found the man 1km from his camp the next morning.
By: Mitch JohnsonAs spyware threats continue to grow the methods by which users are infected becomes less and less difficult. It no longer takes physical access to a computer nor do users have to click on an ad or email attachment to install the malicious applications. Spyware can easily be picked up by visiting a web site. Spyware is put on computers commonly when users download freeware or shareware. Once you download these programs, spyware and adware are installed as well. You may begin to notice more pop ups and slower computer functions once spyware has infected your system.Spyware moves through your computer and monitors your internet habits and the information is sent to a third party who uses it for advertising purposes most likely. More serious types of spyware are capable of recording each keystroke you make on your computer. This means every chat or email message as well as passwords, social security and credit card number are all recorded by the intruder.Several different
I'm just about home and will shortly be able to put up regular posts again. Snuffles is supposed to be running the blog while I'm gone, but he's probably lounging around and reading manga and eating junk food instead. Here in the field, we've encountered some interesting gnats. I'm trying to work and these little bugs are following me; I shout at them, "You're cute and all but I'm just not into that!" And they shout back, "But I have a proboscis and you have an eyeball! We were meant to be together!" Then they fly up my nose.Where did these swarms of gnats come from so late in the year? I can only conclude along with Jannes and Jambres that this is the finger of God.

Gomez: Sexual immorality and worldliness plague the nation -
By STAFF WRITER, Nassau Guardian:
Nassau, Bahamas:
Anglicans were beseeched to hear the call of Jesus like St. Matthew and follow Him, by Archbishop Drexel Gomez at St. Matthew's Church, as the historic parish celebrated its Feast of Title on Sunday.
The televised service was celebrated by the Archbishop Drexel Gomez, Primate of the West Indies and Bishop of The Bahamas, as he congratulated the members of St. Matthew's for their continued service in the building up of God's Kingdom on earth.
The Archbishop however noted that sexual immorality and worldliness in The Bahamas are things that bring great concern to him. "We have allowed our society to accept worldly values and worldly standards, and when we are going with the crowd we are going into the wrong direction," he said. "We are having a state of affairs in which it is alright to be immoral, and if we don't change, it would get worse, before it gets any better.

After some favorable reports by adventurous overseas guests and glowing write-ups in the ubiquitous Lonely Planet series, Yangshuo gradually became known on Asia's backpacker circuit, offering cheap hostels and banana pancakes to laowai (foreigners) on a budget.

While hiking in rural England in the summer of 1990, Geraldine Brooks stumbled upon a small village that has come to be commemorated as the Plague Village because of what happened there in 1665-1666. She was so deeply touched by what she learned of the events in Eyam during those plague years that a decade later they served as the basis for her first novel, Year of Wonders. Her novel begins
My kids are so SICK today! Yesterday morning, the little girls were starting to get runny noses, and Mallory started in on that too, around lunchtime. By evening, Pablo was coughing, which is not unusual for him. He has reactive airway disease, and any time the girls get a little cold, Pablo gets it in his lungs immediately. I went to a meeting last night and was gone about three hours, and when I got home, all four kids were coughing their heads off! We drugged them all up at bedtime and ran the warm mist humidifiers in their rooms, but we still had to do nebulizer treatments for Pablo and Mallory to get them to fall asleep. It was a LATE night for us.
I’ve never seen them all get sick so quickly and to such a degree!! I was supposed to meet up with Ragan and her family today and was so looking forward to it. I’m going to have to call her and cancel now, because obviously I don’t want to expose her little Addie to this crazy bug!
Oh, and guess what I did last night
When the Kansas City public schools lost federal money for their new reading program, Robert Slavin was plenty distressed.Slavin, who'd designed the program used in Kansas City, had seen the pattern all too often: Local officials try to get government grants to help pay for his scripted Success for All reading program, only to realize that it's fallen out of bureaucratic favor in Washington."There have been many of these decisions - this is only the latest," said Slavin, a researcher at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.Fueled by a growing list of such complaints, the House Education and Labor Committee is looking into whether the Bush administration steered contracts to its favorite vendors, shutting out Slavin and other competitors. This from the McClatchy Newspapers.
According to Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), the United States government squandered the offers of international aid which poured in following Hurricane Katrina. The story appeared in today's Washington Post, and it will be interesting to see if it receives the attention it deserves. In one exchange, State Department officials anguished over whether to tell Italy that its shipments of medicine, gauze and other medical supplies spoiled in the elements for weeks after Katrina's landfall on Aug. 29, 2005, and were destroyed. "Tell them we blew it," one disgusted official wrote. But she hedged: "The flip side is just to dispose of it and not come clean. I could be persuaded."How about some accountability? How about explaining why so much money never reached the Mississippi and Louisiana residents in need?Tags: Hurricane Katrina, Bush, Mississippi, Louisiana, government
On Monday, Blythe and I were in NYC, and since it was a nice day we decided to walk to save money and so we wouldn't have to deal with those lovely subway smells. Well, we were walking to 50th from Grand Central Terminal, and we passed the new H&M store on 43rd and Fifth Ave. Honestly they are popping up all over the city. As much as I love H&M, I'm not sure it's necessary to have one on every corner like Starbucks. I think they should concentrate on opening more H&Ms in the Midwest. The first H&M was opened last year in Mich. It was actually really sad because it opened about a week before I moved to CT, and then I had to wait another month for the H&M in the mall closest to me to open. My point is, New York will do fine without another thousand H&Ms, so let the rest of rural America bask in the radiance of those red letters. Trust me, an H&M would improve the Abercrombie driven style of the Midwest 10 fold.PHOTO CREDIT: The Village Voice

Sorry for the absolute lack of anything on the site over the past couple of days — I’ve been deathly ill. Like, bedridden ill. The kind of ill that you don’t tell people who’re eating about. I promise to be back at the site as soon as I’m feeling better, but until then I think now is the perfect time for an important announcement.
X360R has grown as much as it’s going to with one guy at the helm — I think now is the time where we need to start looking for a second. A protege. A guy who’ll do the time I’m not here to do. In the world of gaming news, it’s a death sentence to report something late, and the only way to stay on the ball is if there are others looking out for the latest news.
In short — I’m looking for someone to work with me. Preferably someone who can actually write. If you are interested, send your resume to 451 Press and I wish you the best of luck.

It is this surplus of political experience, her team believes, that could also prove decisive against Obama."http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0307/3304.htmlAlex
About a month ago I brought up Chicky's remarkable health this winter to Mr. C, who promptly started looking into good psychiatric facilities in which to put me.
"It's amazing. She hasn't really been sick all winter."
"Mmm hmm. That's good, right?"
"Well, yeah. But she's got to get sick eventually. All kids get sick in the winter. I wish she would just get ill and be done with it. The
You know what I hate? I hate it when I write a really great email or ad or post and proofread it carefully before exposing it to public view and only later discover that I've completely blown it an sent something totally wrong and not a little embarrassing. Is there any way to recover? I sure wish I didn't have to!
We all make typos, and thus, I generally expect that people will make allowances for mine, and I try to do so for others. But I also get a kick out of them. My favorite recent ones include, "I can hose or come to your place..." and the guy who typoed his own name.
All that said, it's better not to make typos. No, this isn't a job search, but if you're trying to pick up an intelligent woman, you're going to want to look as well-polished (while still real) as you can, and typos don't help.
On the other hand, better a typo than an entirely garbled message. One of my friends pulled that little maneuver a while back, and I'll have to post about it sometime soon. It's
