      Microsoft softens response to piracy
Microsoft Corp. is pulling back from a system that disables programs on users’ computers if it suspects the software is pirated, opting instead for a gentler approach based on nagging alerts. Microsoft said late Monday it will roll out the new version of Windows Genuine Advantage with the first “service pack” for Windows Vista, due in the first quarter of 2008. When computer users activate a copy of Windows Vista or try to download certain software from Microsoft’s Web site, the Windows Genuine Advantage system scans their PCs for signs of pirated software. Today, if the tool finds an unauthorized copy of Vista, the glassy Vista user experience disappears and other features are suspended. In the new version, PC users found to have a pirated copy of Vista will continue to be able to use their computers, but with unmistakable signs their operating system is a fake. The desktop wallpaper will turn black, and a white notice will appear alerting users to the problem.

From time to time people ask me about piracy and security. Let's start with piracy first. If you look at the 2007 Global Piracy Study by BSA, the numbers are frightening. Looking at EMEA, it starts with Moldova on 94% pirated software to Denmark with 25% (which is still every fourth copy!) - the rest is somewhere in between! This is pretty significant and I think it is clear that we are flighting against people stealing our property. If it come to the relation between security and privacy, I would love to have any figures. All the figures about malware we have are mainly from the Malicious Software Removal Tool (which is mainly delivered through Automatic Update) and somebody who is deliberately using a pirated copy would most probably not switch on AU (even though we do not look at the machines). This makes it pretty bad - probably - as the machines will not be patched. To make the point clear: We are delivering critical security updates even to people who have stolen our software i

      Why does piracy exist?
Reading around on the internet lately, I have seen a great deal of talk about piracy and how it “negatively effects” the economy and the companies involved. I am strongly of the opinion that such a statement is complete and absolute bogus. If anything, piracy has helped the economy and companies. I myself have downloaded plenty of things that I didn’t own. Why, might you ask, have I pirated things? Well; how else am I going to find out if it’s actually any good? Sometimes you can walk into a music store and listen to an album to see if you like it, or download a demo of a game off the internet to see if the game was actually fun–sometimes being the key word there. For the most part, this simply is not the case. How can you expect someone to buy something that they don’t even know they will enjoy? And for such unreasonable prices, I might add! You know how much it costs to have DVDs pressed? Approximately $0.50 per disk. The current generation of vide

Youtube launches semi-transparent ad service; IPI reports piracy costs US 12.5 bln; RIAA pays 100,000 to lobbyist Alpine Group
Youtube will launch a video ad service today. The service focuses on not being annoying to users while offering unique opportunity to advertisers. Instead of launching 15 to 30 second pre-roll ads, which research has shown only holds 30% viewer attention, Youtube will include a 10 second semi-transparent ad at the bottom of the video clip. At this point the user will generate a choice, either ignoring the ad, which will disappear after 10 seconds, or clicking to peruse further, whereby the video clip will pause and a full version of the ad will launch. By contrast, %90 of viewers will stick with an ad overly. Additionally, advertisers have the freedom to run launch ads much longer since the user has decided to research.(Link)A report issued by the Institute for Policy Innovation has found global music piracy responsible for slashing both 12.5 billion in US economic output and 71,060 jobs annually. Additionally, the report suggests that the US governments loses $422 million in tax dolla

      A Plea for Piracy
[.pdf file]. The subtitle to this article is: “When copyright owners stop selling older works, maybe pirates deserve some legal cover.” Interesting read. Nice read. It’d be great for music that’s now out of print. I had Mike Doughty’s Smofe + Smang CD a few years back. It was swiped from my car, along with a few other CD’s. I would have gladly re-bought the CD, but now it’s out of print. Normally I’d be out of luck, but through the magic of Bit Torrent, I can now listen to these gems by the ex-Soul Coughing front man.

      Piracy: Bootleg Loopholes
‘Legitimate’ stores selling counterfeit CDs, games and DVDs have been popping up all over the place recently, and I’ve always wondered how they get away with selling copied discs. My flatmates recently bought Fight Night Round 3 from a shop called Cybermedia in Cape Town, for R100 - a fifth of the price of buying it in a mainstream CD store. Granted, the low DPI on the printing of the disc label and cover produce a slightly ‘spotty’ copy, but other than that the game is identical. We’re not talking street vendors with re-dubbed Afghan releases of Titanic. I’d heard about the shop before, and one or two others (The Source), but I thought it was meet-someone-on-the-street-corner-and-use-a-fake-name kind of deal. I didn’t know they had a physical shop, catalogue and website. How could this be possible? Will we ever know? Yes, we will know. Cybermedia have taken advantage of the infamous backup loophole. Basically they sell copies of th

'Piracy’ - antiTHESIS Journal - Call for Papers
Call For Papers: 'Piracy' - antiTHESIS Journal, Volume 18 (2008)"In civilizations without boats, dreams dry up, espionage takes the place of adventure, and the police take the place of pirates."-FoucaultantiTHESIS, one of Australia's longest running postgraduate interdisciplinary journals, now invites creative, scholarly and visual contributions for Volume 18, 'Piracy.' Despite its negative representation in official histories, piracy presents a site of contestation and alterity within an increasingly rationalised and globalised modernity. Piracy brings the concepts of ownership and territory into question; digital piracy disrupts the opposition between work and play, producer and consumer (Kline, 2003). As such, piracy as concept and as practice offers a way to re-think issues within and between disciplines. We seek papers that explore the idea of piracy in relation to the following themes:--piracy and new media--piracy and the state--cultural representation of pirates--copyright

A Bollywood Hero, after all so he is in Satwa Aasman as Love Guru with LCD Tv's on the background... Whereas Alex Hitch, not so popular...an average kinda guy loves to keep this business total secret.Eva Mendes vs. Lara Dutt ... Sexy and smart vs well...just beautiful. Eva bites her lip...half the work done, the other half rests on her mole..... Lara had to run from Chotta Don.... shoot pictures... and also dance to Rap....MAN !!
