This will be a simple and short post on the meaning of an image in a photograph. We should always remember that there are three factors that contribute to meaning and interpretation of a photograph:The first obviously would be the Subject Matter or what is depicted. The second is the Photographer; who is she/he, what is she/he like, what is the photographer's intention or purpose of shooting the im

Leaving the Boathouse yesterday, I snapped this photo of the boaters on the water, and later, as I was looking at it, the image reminded me of a 19th century landscape painting. That's by design. Olmsted and Vaux, in designing Central Park, created vistas that would resemble paintings, like the ones by their friends in the Hudson River School. They designed Central Park with the notion that city dwellers would encounter the sublime as they walked around different areas of the park.Photographers in the 19th century often borrowed compositions from landscape painters, framing their shots in similar ways. In looking at the image above, I think I must carry around with me similar preconceptions of the sublime landscape and how it should be conventionally composed. In addition, my camera is an

Photograph Your Vegetable Garden [Weekend Project] Document your green thumb's handiwork this growing season by taking photos of the flowers and vegetables in your garden. Photographer and gardener Joel Heffner has some tips for getting the best snaps of your garden, like filling the frame and getting an interesting angle. Most people take garden pictures by aiming the camera downward, because it's easier than bending down or crawling in the dirt. The problem is our eye level may not be the best angle from which to take a photo. Try to move around and look for interesting angles—front, back, side, top and bottom views. Also, Heffner says that cloudy days are better than sunny ones for getting good pics without harsh shadows. How's your garden doing? Post your photos in the c

Water by *Getty72 on deviantARTWell, I am still learning to use my DSLR camera, whilst trying to discover how to compose the object/scene. This morning, whilst eating my breakfast, I had a spur of the moment idea....I took two small side-tables and balanced one on top of the other. I ran upstairs and dug out a sheet of green felt (that I use to cover my kitchen table when playing poker...lol), and placed it over the lounge window. So, now the environment was looking pretty cool. Now for a subject! Last night I was taking photos as part of the April Photo challenge and had eaten far too much (there's a clue for the gluttony pic..lol!). So, I decided that I needed a healthy subject this morning. There is nothing healthier than fresh water.... So I grabbed my biggest wine glass (an enormous b
This photograph was taken during Tatay and Nanay's visit to Maui. The original plan was for them to move to Maui and to stay with us as long as they live. That plan changed; they got homesick. I do not know when they can come visit again because I do not know when we can afford to buy them another round trip ticket to Maui. If we can't buy them a ticket within six (6) months from the time they left, their Immigrant Visa will expire and it will be very hard to get them a visa again. That means it is close to impossible for them to come back to the US. But at this point we really can't afford to buy them a round trip ticket within six months so it looks like this photo with their grandkids here would be the last photo they would have with them here on Maui. Maybe we can someday visit

I went out yesterday for a little bit of photography. Here's a photograph of the Cornish-Windsor Bridge. [I guess Vermonters call it the Windsor-Cornish Bridge, which actually has a nicer ring to my ear, but since I'm living in New Hampshire, I'll call it "Cornish-Windsor".]What you see is the Connecticut River, not nearly frozen over, but covered with a lot of floating ice. The long horizontal thing is the bridge: the longest wooden bridge in the U.S. and the longest two-span covered bridge in the world. There's snow on the roof. In the background, I believe that's Mt. Ascutney (VT), but I could be wrong about that. I have no idea of what mountain it would be if it's not Ascutney, though. As always, comments are welcomed and encouraged.
This photo of a UFO over Cornwall is hailed by experts as one of the best ever taken in Britain.UFO sightings at Cornwall 55-year-old Kelvin Barbery snapped the mystery object on Dec 29 (2007) from a coastal path between Swanpool and Maenporth, near Falmouth. In a weird twist, Kelvin did not even see the UFO at the time. He thought he was just taking a sea view… but when he loaded the digital camera card on to his computer, the round metallic ‘craft’ was in the centre of the shot, about two miles away. This news surprisingly didn’t make it big on international papers. Perhaps people are getting bored over pictures, reports, news and videos about UFO sightings, which are often found as fraud in the end.
By Penelope DixonThe collecting of photographs was practically simultaneous with the invention of photography. P & D Colnaghi, a well-established art gallery in London, sold photographs as early as the 1850s, representing both the work of Roger Fenton and Julia Margaret Cameron. People became obsessed with capturing their own likenesses. A popular past-time in the mid-19th Century was the exchange of carte-de-visites. People collected cartes of their friends and family and put them into albums, much like children exchanging school pictures today. Much like our present fascination with Hollywood personalities, they were also avid collectors of celebrity images. A recent exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London, The Beautiful and the Damned: The Creation of Identity in Ninet
To photograph is to exclude, said one of the masters. Much as you would like to include all sceneries in one encompassing, panoramic shot, sometimes you can't. So you have to be selective, find your point of interest and focus on your subject. For the shot above which I took in the town of Libjo, Dinagat Island, I could have moved farther away from the coconut tree and included the palm leaves and blue sky as background. But here a photographic decision had to take place. If I moved back from the tree, I would miss a lot - the root details, the soft shadows made by the leaves, white sand beach, clear waters of the shore, and the gradation of sea colors. I had to crop, frame the subject and exclude all others in the pheriphery. And I liked the outcome. Ultimately, how a subject looks photog
This morning I awoke, praying that the rain would break for a few hours so that I could take my camera for a walk and complete my January challenge. Well, I did manage to enjoy a nice long walk for a few hours, but the rain was relentless. I got absolutely drenched.... but there is something magical about walking in a forest when it is raining. The rustling of the wind through the trees, the pitter patter of the rain falling from the branches, the squelching of the sodden ground beneath your feet.I was hoping to take a few photographs and return home to select a nice one, but the rain was unforgiving, so I only managed to capture a small handful before returning the camera to the security of my damp rucksack. There were moments where I wished I could climb in there myself. My contribution t

It may come as a complete surprise to you all to discover that I like taking photographs….LOL! Truth be told, it is my way of capturing the magic and beauty of the world around me. There is so much I find inspiring about jumping in the car, going anywhere, getting out and just walking - albeit a city, a forest, a field, a lake - being somewhere and capturing the moment forever.I have visited many blogs where people have set up regular photo projects. So I have decided to have a go at doing my own. I thought hard and long for a subject for the first month and came up with nothing…ooops, and then the penny dropped. As this is the first month, I am going to make my first theme based on “One”. So the idea is, by the end of January, to take a photograph that in some way, manner or form

During this celebration period as Christmas, New Year, there will be many firework shows in many places. Therefore, there are a lot of opportunities to photograph firework photos.I am not professional but I would like to share my basic technique of how to take fireworks photos from my digital photography point of view. What do you need for taking firework photos?Camera: the one that has "Bulb" shutter speed is preferable.Wide and normal zoom lens: 10-22 mm, 16-35 mm, 18-55 mm, 24-70mm, etc. Zoom lenses have more flexibility to frame your photos. However, there are no solid rules which focal length should be used because it depends on how far of you and fireworks, how big of the fireworks are, etc.Tripod: You really need it because of long shutter speed while taking firework photos. You must keep your camera still otherwise your photos will be blurred.Remote switch: It helps you to keep your camera completely still while photographing firework shots. When you use "Bulb (B)" shu

Japan is to fingerprint and photograph foreigners entering the country from next month in an anti-terrorism policy that is stirring anger among foreign residents and human rights activists.
"This will greatly contribute to preventing international terrorist activities on our soil," Immigration Bureau official Naoto Nikai said in a briefing on the system, which starts on November 20.

In these modern times and with globalization I must say that I am against the plans by Japan to document all foreign citizens inside and outside the country. I thought the days of the Tokugawa shogunate were gone? With Japan's role as a global leader, it's sad that they have decided to treat all non-Japanese people as suspected terrorists.
To find some answers, go here. Good suggestions include:Clench your butt cheeks.Try not to look at the camera lens, but the eyes of the person behind the camera.Hold your shoulders back, stick your chin out as far as you can, turn your face so it's at a 3/4 angle, tilt your chin down a little - hence, the "MySpace pose" or taking photos from above. In a group portrait (especially an informal one) people have a tendency to lean in toward the person in the center. Don't do that.Think of the most hilarious and/or satisfying thing you can imagine while the picture is being taken.Imagine that the camera is a child you love and smile warmly and sharingly at that child, like you're whispering "You're so cute!"Try looking away from the camera at something else, then imagine that an old friend has just called out your name from the general direction of the camera. If you are standing, turn slightly and rest your weight on one foot. It may feel goofy, but you will look better. If you are sittin

MIFC (Malaysia International Fireworks Competition) ended on 2 September 2007 and we went for photo shooting on the 1st night 18 Aug. Some reader might asked, this event is outdated and it has passed more than 1 month, however I would like to share some tips and technique that I used and learned that you can use for next fireworks event like New Year.
Here are 8 tips and techniques that I have used and learned:
1. Reach the location earlier in order to get a good location with an unobstructed view.
2. Tripod is a must. No question ask even you have VR, IS, it doesn’t helps.
3. Set your camera’s ISO setting to lowest to prevent digital noise.
4. Turn the camera’s built-in flash OFF.
5. Use the Landscape Mode for Point and Shoot Camera or Infinity focus setting for DSLR.
6. Shoot at 5 to 10 second shutter speeds at around F8 to F16.
7. Use a remote release if you can—or use self timer to prevent camera shake while you are pressing the shutter.8. Include the foreground in som
The film 300 was a huge success for Zack Snyder, and since then he has attached his name to lots of films. At the moment, Snyder is shooting the Watchmen but he’s also developing an adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s The Illustrated Man. Not only that, but he’s planning an original fantasy drama with Sucker Punch and developing Army of Dead.
It seems that is not enough for Snyder. He’s now planning a change of pace by developing The Last Photograph, a war drama set in Afghanistan. He’s teaming up with 300 writer Kurt Johnstad on a script based on one of Snyder’s ideas, about a war photograph that becomes the catalyst for a journey that two men take through war-torn Afghanistan.
The two are planning to develop the script to then auction it off, so Snyder may not actually direct.

First, let’s see what I used: a white textile (canvas or so) and not a paper. Why? Because I want the result to be realistic and not plane. Also, it’s important that the background surface should not be glossy.
Natural light plus a tungsten light (two of them would be even better) and fill flash. Because the flash might overexpose some ares of the photo (usually the central area), I use a diffuser made from a very transparent soft plastic or canvas piece.
Usually this kind of thing refers to macro shots, so you may want to shoot in macro mode or manual.
Now let’s see the tips:
1. Use a textile background that makes a few soft “natural waves”
2. Use one little colored piece in your white composition as a reference
3. Use lights from all sides to avoid big dark shadows
4. Use fill flash (better with diffuser on it) to naturally brighten up the scene and reveal the details
5. Use custom white balance to ensure real white
6. Only use matrix light metering

As I was writing my last post I became a little curious as to what type of camera, if any, do other gardeners use to record their flowers and changes in landscape.
Do most have a point-and-shoot? Or, are more gardeners moving over to digital SLR's? Perhaps, some are still talking photographs on film and getting it produced?
So, it seemed logical to introduce the poll for this week asking gardeners for the preference in garden imagery. Cast your vote and I'll report the results next Saturday.

Making photographs is a great way to express oneself. Most people like looking at pretty photographs, usually this can calm down and relax a person. Personally I like pictures of different beaches and I think that a lot of people do as well. Wouldn’t it be great to have a picture large as a painting that could just hang on your wall in your living room? Well, that certainly is possible with LearnToDream.co.uk since they offer photographs printed onto canvas. You have to see them yourself to fully appreciate them as they are really beautiful. If I would have to choose to have only one picture printed onto canvas I would probably choose a nice picture of a pretty beach. What would you choose if you could choose only one favorite picture? Fortunately with LearnToDream.co.uk you are not limited to just one picture as you can order as many as you want and choose canvases in many different sizes including A3, A2, A1, A0 and even up to 3m x 1.5m. You can order any amount of canvases or even

I really have to share this latest technique that I truly love here with all of you. It is what I called the "Twines Framed Photograph" technique. This technique was actually being inspired by my huge big wedding photograph which had been framed that way. To create a "Twines Framed Photograph", simply follow the steps below.1. Cut out a frame out of card stock and cut out some mats for the photographs too. I've used a white card stock and a velum for the mattings of my photograph here. I've also used the "steel ruler" technique here to distress my photograph. (Refer "Using Steel Ruler on Photographs" in my tips and tricks section)2. Punch some holes on the mattings and also on the frame. Remember: try to positions your holes on the frames and the mattings to create a desired twines threading design later. 3. Use a long twine and thread through the holes alternately between the holes on the mattings and the hole on the frame. Remember: leave some lengths of twine in the beginning to
I came home the other day and the sun was setting and there was a very bizarre light out there. I decided to wander out to the flower garden that's in our side yard. I don't go out there very often, which means that when I do go out there, I'm almost always pleasantly surprised by what I find. All summer long, something is blooming, and I never know what it will be. There were some flowers out there this time that were obviously past their prime, and I just found this shot to be irresistible:That last petal was just holding on for dear life. It was this incredibly vivid color, contrasting with this bizarre hub which used to contain so very many petals and had become so very barren. I think it's lovely. Let me know what you think of it.

Baba first came to Shirdi , when he was a young lad of sixteen and stayed there for three years. Then all of a sudden He disappeared for some time. After some time, He reappeared in the Nizam state near Aurangabad, and again came to Shirdi with the marriage-party of Chand Patil, when He was twenty years old. Since then, He stayed in Shirdi continuously for a period of sixty years, after which Baba took His Maha-Samadhi in the year 1918. From this we can say that the year of Baba's birth is approximately 1838 A.D.www.starsai.com

One Nokia week ago confirmed the existence of the successor in Nokia N80: N81. Only thin returned 3D give us an outline of the N Series. A first photograph has just made its appearance with two N81: one of face and one of back.
For recall, this future NR Series will possèdera 8Go of memory, a screen QVGA of 2,4 inches with 16 million colors, a numerical camera of 2 Megapixels, chips Wifi and Bluetooth, a catch jack 3,5mm and compatibility GSM/GPRS/EDGA/3G/HSDPA. All this small world will hold in 140gr what is completely reasonable.
Talk about keeping people in suspense! I’ve heard that besides being the first Nseries device to offer the N-Gage gaming platform, the Nokia N81 also offers a new ui enhancement, dedicated gaming keys, new nokia search and new music player.
How Long Does It Take You To Photograph a Scene in NYC? You might need a permit!
Apparently, NYC(New York City), is interested in requiring permits of people who will be photographing in a single location for more than thirty minutes, if they are two or more people. If a tripod and/or five or more people are involved, 10 minutes, and you'll need a permit. In addition to the permit, you'll need proof of insurance.
According to the mayor's office, this kind of ruling doesn't affect tourists and amateur photographers. However, I think about all the times I've been photographing a scene or doing some portraits of friends and I easily spend half an hour or more in one location.
This has to do with chatting, setting up, posing, eating, pointing and framing, etc. I've taken as long as an hour in one place as a tourist.
Apparently, this rule applies to people who are in cars as well. Have you seen the traffic? 30 minutes is nothing.
So What?

Now here is an ingenious idea from diyphotography.net. A light bulb is full of argon gas. This gas is inert and does not burn, so the filament will burn indefinitely, until of course oxygen slowly leaks into the bulb. If you break the bulb and turn it on, the filament will burn up within a second.
Now if you set the bulb in a steady base, go to a dark room, and light the bulb, you can photograph it. All you have to do is set the camera on bulb exposure while on a tripod using a remote control. You open the shutter of your camera, then turn on the bulb. The camera will record the show. Now, you could also set the camera to do high speed rapid shots, and get other cool effects.
Please don’t touch the metal filament while the bulb is turned on, it could stop your heart. View this cool project here.
Lately, it’s been my custom to take images of my artwork via my camera phone. It’s economical, it easily transfers to my computer for web viewing and it’s really, really horrible image quality.
So, I have contracted out this little task to a great friend of mine who I help him with his blog on occasion, Claude Barclay has agreed to be my personal photographer for my artwork.
Claude is a professional photographer here in the central Ohio area and has been doing photography for… well, more years than I’ve been alive. He knows his stuff, and has the equipment to pull it off.
So let’s skip to the finished product, and then we’ll come back to what the process was to get there.
This is an abstract painting I completed awhile ago that is as of yet untitled still.
The dimensions are 24″x48″
Medium: Latex Enamels
The challenge: This is a very reflective painting as it was painted in enamels, so many of my personal attempts at photographing

So, it just came to me...when I'm hypomanic, I should practice my new photography skills rather than talking at all. If a photograph is worth a thousand words, then shooting a roll would certainly eliminate a lot of unnecessary conversation.Having said that, I remember that dootz of SurfCountry suggested that I tell you the story of my photography class final. Here goes...Although I had an "A" going into the final, I was quite worried about the written examination. All of our other work had been photographic assignments, which I genuinely enjoyed. At this stage in my life, grades aren't important to me--I care more about learning. Still, I hadn't taken the class pass/not pass because I didn't want the teacher to think I am a dilettante. But I was concerned because I hadn't taken a final exam in almost 40 years. One of the reasons why I majored in history as a UCLA undergraduate was because I preferred writing papers to taking written exams. I don't ever remember taking a mult
Last month, The Wellcome Trust released their image archives for non-commercial use under a Creative Commons license in a new website, Wellcome Images. While this online picture library primarily specialises in medical history and the biomedical sciences, there are also a few gems from its historical collection, such as this, a picture of Fort Tanjong Katong, highlighted to me by acroamatic.
This is quite an exciting find because until now, there hasn’t been a photograph of Fort Tanjong Katong available, particularly since the site was excavated a few years ago.
Fort Tanjong Katong was built in Singapore in 1879 as a response to perceived gap in the defence grid on the eastern part of Singapore Town. By erecting a battery at the mouth of the Kallang River, Fort Tanjong Katong placated the fears of the local merchant community fearful of an enemy ship sailing into the Kallang River and lobbying shells into the city.
Initially armed with three 7-inch cannons, these were soon rende

I was 6 yeas old when my class did a project on the ancient Egyptians. In my mind, it was the most interesting topic we ever studied and one I’ll always remember fondly from my childhood. One autumn afternoon we were told all about the Sahara desert, where it was, how big it was, and the animals that lived there. Later that day toothbrushes and a palette of red, orange and yellow paints were handed out. We used the brushes to flick the paints onto paper, building up layers of sand-like spray. As it dried the paper was mounted onto dark red cardboard creating a border around our sandscapes. All the children had to think of a sentence describing their deserts. These ranged wildly from ‘the desert has lots of sand’ to ‘deserts are sunny’.For my picture I decided to write ‘the desert is very, very hot, with very little water’. I thought nothing of it at the time and handed it to my teacher to be put on the classroom wall amongst the others. She then turned to me looking surpr
