Intelius, Inc., a company that provides online information about people for a fee, recently announced it has added cell phone listings to its phone directory, making it one of the first companies to expand its people search and reverse phone search capabilities to include cell phone numbers. Intelius gets the data by purchasing it from other companies. Currently, Intelius has about 90 million cell phone numbers in its data base and plans to add an additional 70 million more shortly. A new site Numbr (how web 2.0ish) has sprung up that lets you create a temporary number that can last anywhere from 1 hour to 1 month. You could then use this number when you post something for sale online so that you don’t have to give out your real number, you could use that number to put on your resume when you post it on Monster or CareerBuilder so you don’t get all of those unwanted callers asking if you want to be on their sales team making very little money selling things people don’t really want.
The service will also record voicemails for you that are then sent to your email and also let you block anonymous callers. It’s free for now since it’s in beta. They may turn it into a pay service once out of beta, then they might not, but the money has to flow somehow. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some sort of advertising spring up somewhere in the call.
