We’re not talking extreme eating disorders here. This is the less-discussed, but more common phenomenon in which capable, clever women just can’t get their head around eating properly. Why do we torture ourselves? Naturally, as women, there’s no straight answer. Seeing food as complicated is so deeply ingrained in many women’s minds that it’s hard to [...]

DSM-IV and ICD-10: Do I have social phobia
When did I suspect for the first time that I might have social phobia? Long time ago (maybe 12-14 years ago), I remember reading some medical magazine and encountering (then unbeknown to me, but it rang the bell all right) the phrase: “social anxiety”. My symptoms were not so perceptible at that time, and I just wanted to be like anyone else, so I kind of forgot about that. I *wanted* to forge

I now know the name of my deadliest enemy: she’s called social phobia!
Hello, dear reader! I’d like to welcome you to my blog about social phobia - or social anxiety - and what it means to live with this disorder! I’m a 30 year old woman suffering from this condition… since I can remember, I guess. A week ago, I’ve decided that enough is enough! and FINALLY asked for professional help!So I went to psychiatrist (still can’t believe how I got the courage … it was more like an act of utter despair, actually! Plus I hate to ask for help!), and now I am undergoing a therapy for social anxiety disorder. It is too early to say if I am indeed better concerning my emotional – or mental – state and a variety of my social fears… It is clear that this is going to be a tough battle! But worth winning! …because, really, my life is at stake. This life I

      Keisha's Phobia
Recently, Keisha was having a great time attending birthday party of her classmate held in McDonald's place. She had finished her spaghetti, chicken and ice cream, joined all the games and won several prizes for her efforts. She was even dancing and laughing with her classmates until the fast-food chain's mascot Grimace (or Ube, as she called it) came bounding out from behind the closed door. Upon seeing it Keisha finally ran and looked for me and the never ending hug that we have till the end of the party. She refused to join and continue the good time she have with her classmates. Even the moms encourage her to join again and keep on explaining that it was only a mascot, a man wearing a costume. On a serious note, it is a shame that the HIV & AIDS problem has almost gone in red now. India as country has become a stronghold of the deadly HIV Virus. As per World Health Organizations estimates, India has a very big problem with HIV/AIDS next only to some African countries where the problem is in the red already. In India, the situation can be stated to be almost in the red; 500-1000 out of every 10000 of deaths in India are due to AIDS. And even more alarmingly, due to the lax attitude of people when it comes to awareness regarding responsible sexual behavior, the number of people living with HIV/AIDS is increasing faster than anywhere else in the world. If it were not for the great work of bodies such as WHO and other AIDS mass media, the situation would have been a nightmare al

Quick Announcement: I have a new feature to the blog. Now you can purchase the book I am always referring to, "The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook" by Edmund J. Bourne right here from the sidebar of my blog. The picture above won't take you to it but the one on the left hand side of the blog will. Its a little slow to load right now so if you don't see it give it a few more seconds to load. Hopefully Amazon will fix that soon or I will switch to another bookstore provider. I purchased mine online and it was a very easy experience. I hardly ever buy books but this one was worth every penny. The nice thing about it is that it gives you the tools to learn and then the workspace to practice those tools. You really get a feel for who you are and what the real issues you need to work out come from

      Aqua-phobia
W loved to play in the water when he was a young toddler. Unlike H, he was much bolder when exploring in the water. However, a few accidents in the water caused him to develop mild aqua-phobia. Though he seemed to like the idea of going for a swim when we suggested it, there is a doubt in him and when we were near the pool,he backed off. He didn't even want to go near the pool. However, he enjoyed looking at his brother and cousins having fun in the pool.He would be very cautious, just sitting at the side of the pool with the legs in the water. He might later sit on the steps going down the pool but would never let the water touch his chest, not to mention his hair. If he is excited enough,he might venture out a little, moving away from side of the pool but didn't want to move far or to t

      Toddler Phobia
It would appear that our toddler Little Miss has developed a series of phobias and fears already in he short, but ever so eventful life. They range from the endearingly cute ones, such as her current thing about doggie poo. After a recent incident where toddler and Wife went out to explore the area around the house (complete with backpack, explorer hat and torch) and managed to stand in some dog poo on the nature strip out the front a phobia has been born. Now whenever Little Miss is wandering around grassland, the front lawn, or a park, she will occasionally stop, drink in her surrounds and exclaim as a warning to the unseen others around her - “Watch out for the doggiieeee pooooooo!!’ Wow that last attempt at putting the spoken language onto paper displays just how hard it can be to adequately translate toddler into a written format while still maintaining the inflection, the subtext, and the adorable cuteness. Digression over. So that is one of the cute phobias - an alm

NLP and Hypnosis Can Help You Obliterate A Social Phobia
By: Alan B. Densky, CH Self-confidence is a feeling that is garnered through experiences. When a person experiences success, that person will tend to expect to be successful. And that expectation will cause a feeling of confidence. For example: A young man wants to be a prizefighter, so he gets a manager and a trainer. His manager will not put him into the ring until he has developed proficient fighting skills. And even then, the manager will only put him up against an adversary that he knows his fighter can hammer. When his fighter beats the competitor, he is successful, and starts to gain confidence in his capability. With each combat, the manager puts his fighter up against an adversary who is only a little bit better of a competitor then the last, but not good enough to beat his man. By the end of the third fight, the young man begins to expect to win his fourth, and so his confidence continues to bloom. This series of events continues to repeat itself. And as long as the man conti

The textbooks are getting more expensive every year. In the past, I did not know of this. I took old textbooks from neighbours and friends. I kept Ricsson’s textbooks for Clara to use. However, by the time Clara’s turn to use the books, all the booklists were different. Last year, I was glad I was granted free text books. I saved about S$350! With these money saved, I bought new uniform for Ricsson. Last week, Clara complained about her skirt being too tight. It is time I buy her new skirts too. These are all the things which cost money. Snake Phobia
There aren’t many things that frighten me. I’m not saying that in a “I think I’m a brave, brave gal” kind of way. I’m saying it in an honest way. I’m totally cool with bugs. Truth be told, I am a science geek;therefore, I love bugs. They are neat little creatures. Anyway, I’m also cool with being in the dark. I’m even semi-cool with enclosed places, and thunderstorms are awesome. Neither vomit nor heights bother me, and I’m game for flying. But…I am terrified of snakes. Phobic of them, really. The mere thought of encountering one seriously makes me semi-paralytic. I’ve never actually encountered one while outside. In fact, the idea that I might encounter one has stopped me from entering the woods numerous times. My brother saw one in our backyard once I didn’t step out there for a year. Seriously. They are just soooo creepy. The best part is that I’m only discussing my fear because tom

      Phobia
Or is it just being plain sick of the Internet? I don't know... My last posting was on June 17 and now it is almost a month later since I have last posted. Between then, I have reflected on, among others, the free flow of information on the Internet... Somehow, it just sickens me, which was why I took a back seat for a while and just observe... and the more I observe, the more amazing it becomes. Some bloggers are fine but there are those who are just too self-righteous and many full of themselves... the common factor being that they can do no wrong and their opinion must be held by all, no dissenting views entertained. And these are the same people who try, pathetically, champion freedom of speech... I shall rest and observe. My next posting? Only God knows... To my friends, live life the way you want it, not what other dictates. Cheers.

So I'm a stay at home mom. I am very happy with all my duties in this job except the one where I have to get out and expose my child to other children for socialization. That one makes me very nervous.I have tried many a mommy group. They are a bit intimidating for me. It's like trying to find the right clique in high school, and I am well past that age thank you very much.I came to realize that there are just a few general practices which compose the mommy group, not to mention mommy etiquette. Somehow they forgot to give me my mommy manual at the hospital. I wanted to know how everyone else learned the nuances of monitoring inter-child relations. The simplistic ones like what to do when Johnny hits your kid at the playground are hard enough- never mind interacting at a mommy group where you are supposed to be trying to create a social life for yourself and your kid.I've always been much better one on one than in a group anyway. The thing which has become one of the biggest sources
