      The perils of accommodating Ireland.
Interesting confirmation of the legal situation in the face of changes to the Lisbon treaty to accommodate Ireland, and pave the way for a second referendum. Austria’s chancellor, Alfred Gusenbauer, has said that if any changes are made to the Lisbon Treaty following its rejection by Irish voters earlier this month, then it should be put [...]

The perils of hiring a property manager
My apologies for the somewhat sparse blogging this week, but I've been very distracted with a small income property I have here in Southern California. Although one of my tenants and my management company have long been at odds, it wasn't until recently that I saw firsthand the enormous problems that can arise when you put your trust into a property management company that's interested in the fees but not so interested in earning it properly.I only mention this because I think this is a timely story in a market in which people have (a) bought properties to rent out in order to build equity (over time, of course); and (b) are intending to sit on homes now under-water and rent them out until the market rebounds. In fact, hiring the wrong management company can cause financial and legal dis

Between Friends: The Perils of Centralized Blogging
One of the paradoxes of current social software is how many of your closely-guarded secrets you are obliged to entrust to a third party. The news that LiveJournal has been soldto SUP, a Moscow-based company, is the latest vivid indication of this danger. Now, LiveJournal journal entries are under the control of not only a young new company, but a new jurisdiction: Russia. What does that mean for the privacy of LiveJournal posts and the free expression ofLiveJournal users?Countries like Russia have weaker protections over privacy and free speech, both legally and culturally, than many users might have come to expect. Legal considerations aside, LiveJournal may come under far more intense pressure to turn over user information or remove content when run from Moscow than from the United States. The site is very popular among Russian-speakers and is used by opposition politicians there as much as by enthusiastic fan-fictionauthors. The political status of free expression in Russia is on sh

      THE PERILS OF FENCE SITTING
HILLARY IS IN TROUBLE Now the fun begins! [...]As Hillary Clinton huddled with advisers not long ago, she was pressed to stake a position popular with the party's left-leaning voters on one issue. But the presidential front-runner resisted. It wasn't her position. "If I do what you all want me to do, I'll look great for the next couple months," she said, according to one insider's account. "But what if I'm the nominee? I'll be ripped apart by the Republicans. And what if I'm the president? My hands will be tied." The New York senator's response captured the tension at the core of her 10-month-old presidential bid, and helps illuminate why she has hit a dangerously bumpy stretch as January's first nominating votes near. Sen. Clinton actually is running two campaigns at once -- courting left-leaning Democrats to get the nomination, but mindful even now of maintaining a sufficiently centrist course to withstand Republican attacks and win election next November. The Perils of Giving Advice to the Ones you Love
miWisdom today… When people go through periods of great difficulty in their lives, we naturally have a tendency to try and assist them through their problems by providing them with techniques and strategies that we believe will help them overcome their challenges. Is this really the right and just way to go about assisting a person in need? First of all, what may appear to be the right way around a problem to us may not in fact be the most ideal solution for the other person. Yes, we may well have gone through a similar experience, or we may have heard or read about others overcoming this sort of challenge in their life. Yet, can we rightly justify the act of providing helpful advice without first truly understanding the other person and their experience from absolutely every angle imaginable? Because this is exactly what it will take to provide this person with the right and suitable answers they are after. When we freely help others, do we even consider the repercussions

      the perils of padding
Well, hopefully this post will help you avoid the perils of padding, because there are ways to wear this trend of quilting and padding without looking like the Michelin Man's wife. In France and Italia there has for some time been a big following of really Puffa-style mid-to-full-length coats, usually in black and brown. Personally, I'm not such a fan. When I think of looking good in padding, I tend to think short, simple, and preferrably balanced by a slimmer-lower half. I also think of Moncler. Yup, a trend for padding is the best excuse you'll find to whip out your vintage big-M-jackets and gillets, even if they're actually rather more suited to -20C and 2 metres of snow. But remember, these are casual jackets (even if they cost a lot), and I think are best paired with some jeans (maybe bootlegs) and, as seen on The Sart a while ago, a really casual pair of Prada boots. However if you want something a bit sleeker and pretty, here's my tip. Go for a mid-length (around the knee) c

The Perils of Failing to Have a Plan
There is a new team in one of my leagues, and based on their recent trade postings it appears that they have little in the way of a cohesive plan. When he was charged with the duty of taking Mexico from the Aztecs, Hernan Cortes came up with a unique plan. He was faced with an army that was outnumbered, that was grousing about their plight, that was undercutting him to each other. Essentially, his army still had the hope that they would go home to Spain. Cortes had a problem; how could he galvanize this army into fighting a winning battle against a superior force? He started burning their ships, so that they had no choice but to fight. With no ships the army would have to abandon all hope of returning home and would now be forced to fight to win. This plan succeeded. There are two lessons for the Fantasy General from the story of Cortes, both of which were not followed by the owners mentioned above. The first is to actually have a plan. This is the simpler part; you need to decide what y

The Perils of Tracking Two Blogs
I've been working hard for the last few days on getting my new site up and running. My goal right now is to start pushing as much content on the site as I can while still maintaining a significant level of quality. With only about ten posts currently in inventory I decided against displaying any AdSense ads on the site - for now.  I've managed to place a few Amazon affiliate banners on the site and a few text links throughout the content.  By the weekend I hope to be up to about twenty posts and at that point will start considering the site launched. Launching a second site can be a very interesting endeavor. Having learned a lot running Bill2me dot Com for so long I'm always thinking about what can be done better - it's fun to get a chance to put some of my "if only's" into practice. Do you have a list of "If Only's" related to your site?  What would you do if you could start fresh?

The So-Called Perils of Job-Hopping - Part II
Most of our employers have given us hire letters that state that we have “employment-at-will.” This means our employers can terminate us at any time without stating a reason. They can chuck us out into the streets, without thought of where we’ll go from there, how soon we’ll be able to find another job, how we’ll be able to maintain our home and feed our families, etc. So, let’s take a reality check. Here are a few reasons why many people leave their jobs:· They found a better job;· They want better pay or health insurance;· They are relocating to another city or state;· They want to change their career path or profession;· They are returning to school;· They had a child and have decided to become a stay-at-home mom or to stop working for a couple of years to be home with their child;· They’re trying to escape a hostile and offensive work environment; or· Death Regardless of the reason why a person leaves em

THE SO-CALLED PERILS OF JOB HOPPING!
Once you decide it's time to find a new job, you start to think about companies you want to work for (in your field, in a new field/industry, etc.) and you visit numerous companies to discuss potential employment. As you’re getting a feel for the companies (e.g., comparing benefits, etc.), you start to develop a hierarchy of which jobs you’d like to take. However, your main priority is still to find work. There's always a job you really hope you get. And, there's always a job that you're not crazy about, but it's work! Ultimately, a job just has to be a job sometimes--for many of us.Depending on how quickly you need to find a job, you may accept a job offer from the first company to offer you employment. Let's face it...most people simply don’t have the luxury to wait to hear back from everyone they’ve interviewed with. And, that's how the confusion often gets started. You accept a job offer from the first company to make an offer, you're working for a few months, and th

The perils of enforcing rules on multiculturalism
In Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, citizens are defined on their identity cards and passports by race and religion. It's a function of how these societies are organized along racial and religious lines. If Canadian multiculturalism has freed people to revel in, or rebel against, their religious, racial, ethnic, cultural or linguistic identities, the "managed multiculturalism" model of this region has trapped them in officially designated categories.Singapore, which broke off from Muslim Malaysia in 1965, has maintained its ethnic mix of 75 per cent Chinese, 15 per cent Muslim Malay and 7 per cent Indians from India. It has done so with controlled migration from China to compensate for the perceived higher birth rate among the Malay Muslims. The government also maintains informal quotas for the three communities in housing, schooling and electoral representation.Since accommodation is expensive on the 699-square-kilometre island, nearly 80 per cent of its 4.5 million people live in s
