A study led by Dr. Eli Hatchwell of Stony Brook University Medical Center in New York has found that disruption of a gene called contactin 4 prevents the brain from making proper networks. Two copies of the gene are required for proper functioning but some children have either three copies or one copy. Dr. Hatchwell estimates that contactin 4 gene disruption may be involved in as many as 2.5 percent of autism cases: "Generally the mistake that people make is they are looking for one unifying cause for autism, and there is no such thing and there never will be," Hatchwell said in a telephone interview....."Autism is a syndrome. These individuals have all been grouped together as having the same thing. There will be many, many dozens if not hundreds of different causes," he said.Contactin 4

Almost 80 per cent of households in Italy own their property
While we are on the subject, let's lay to rest a few myths. The first is that Britain has a high level of home-ownership while the majority of our European neighbours are content to rent. Almost 80 per cent of households in Spain and Italy own their property. The shares in France and Germany are hardly low at about 63 per cent and 43 per cent respectively. The second is that buying always makes more sense economically than renting. In many parts of the country, it is cheaper to rent than to buy, certainly over a two- to five-year period. Simply put, it is quite easy to find a property where the monthly rent is less than the mortgage interest.

75 per cent of London thinks I'm boring
God, I'm boring. I always suspected this was the case, and last week I had it proved to me. Having submitted a slightly edited version of my 'fuzzy logic' post to thelondonpaper, they printed the thing in their Talk section, where a reader becomes a 'columnist' for the day (my byline was "Chris Young, 28, is a dancer from Balham"). At the bottom of the column, there is a number for readers to text in and vote on whether they want "more", or whether they think the writer is a "bore". Following the publication of my 400-word ramble on beards, 75 per cent of London decided that I was a "bore". Needless to say, I had voted "more", which cost me 35p. Perhaps I annoyed some hairy men. Or maybe people just don't like dancers from Balham. The fear is that I have already become as boring as my father, who can clear a room not only on the basis that he bears more than a passing resemblance to Saddam Hussein and the serial killer Fred West, but because his 'dad talk' can out-dad the most d

The domestic crude oil imports requirement may go up to about 85 per cent by 2012 from current level of 70 per cent even though refining capacity in India is poised to increase by 58 per cent to touch 235 million tonnes (MT) in next five years from present level of about 159 MT, an industry body said. This is in view of the growing demand of energy with little resources at India's disposal for harnessing its alternate sources, it added.Assocham in a paper on "Future Imperatives of crude oil scenario" has said the country's dependence on crude oil will increase as domestic discoveries have not been taking place, while energy demand in future will multiply and rise to the level of 12-13 per cent compared to 7-8 per cent now."It is true that refining capacities will also register a manifold increase but for that we need a crude oil which is a scarce commodity now and will continue to be so in future too," said Assocham President Venugopal N Dhoot. The paper also said the artificial ceilin

UK Online Gambling hit by 15 per cent Tax
Online gambling companies have condemned a new 15% tax set by Gordon Brown. The rate, which takes effect from April 1, is in line with tax imposed on other forms of gambling but is much higher than the two to three percent for which online gambling companies had lobbied. John Coates, chairman of the Remote Gambling Association, said in a budget response statement: “The UK has effectively turned its back on the industry. It will now be almost impossible for a UK-based operator to compete with offshore businesses.” He noted that a lower tax would have encouraged a more regulated and lucrative market, attracting offshore operators to the UK. ATreasury spokesman responded by insisting that the rate simply brings online gambling into line with the rest of the industry, emphasizing that “the UK cannot and should not try to compete with tax havens.” Source: vnunet
