      Crispy Pears
I'm a huge fan of freeze dried fruit. I like adding it to salads, low calorie cereal, steel-cut oatmeal, almond milk, low calorie trail-mix, fage yogurt, or any other food than needs some added crunch or flavor. I've already blogged about a couple of dried fruits, namely Funky Monkey and Sensible foods, and today I thought I'd blog about another personal favorite called Crispy Green. There are a fe

      Two Pears
I know that fall is here because of the light. It's really becoming wonderfully dramatic in the studio after noon. I took a photo of Tallulah yesterday afternoon in similar light and can almost see her by Vermeer. These two pears served as models for this morning's drawing class. 7"X5" Oil on board I might as well make the most of the fruit while it is here. I liked the contrast between the yellows of the fruit and the periwinkle of the shawl. I have to try to get these right twice, once when I paint and again when I photograph it. This time I think my painting was closer to the original than the reproduction. $35 + Shipping $8.00 Canada $9 US $10 Euro

Lamb Sausage with Lentils and Sauteed Pears
I think this meal is going to become my new go-to dinner for guests. For a while, anytime we had anyone new over, we served this steak. Sure, that goat-cheese topped filet was awesome, but this lamb, lentil and pear dish wins. Dave and I had this for dinner and had enough leftover for lunch the next day. I'd even considered ways to finagle Dave's lunch helping away from him so I could have it all

      Ceramic Pears
I always decorate my table top with seasonal inspirations, but fall is always difficult because I can't stand the cornucopia/squash/turkey theme. As a result, I tend to let summer linger into winter, and for the week that I deem fall (which, honestly, doesn't really exist in Houston), I put out some mustard and rust plates that I picked up years ago at Z Gallerie. These brightly colored pears by

      Caramelized Rocha Pears
Fall in the Algarve is a medley of sunny days, cool evenings and chestnut roasting vendors with billowing clouds of smoke that tempt from afar. Fortunately the chestnut roasters haven’t come out yet, and my compulsion to hunt them down is still a few weeks away. Although I really really like summer, fall is one of my favorite times of year: roasted chestnuts awaiting me at every corner and all the comfort foods ahead makes saying goodbye to summer a bit more bearable. Roasts, lots of baked everything, fire in your chest drinks like Aguardente, Muscatel and Setubles, and let’s not forget the Ports! Ahhh fall here I come… I don’t think there’s a better way to usher in fall than with our spiced up Rocha Pears, now in season. I’ve always been challenged by pears mostly because I haven’t’ come across a lot of great pear recipes. So this year I decided to take these sexy shaped vixens and have my way with them. The result: caramelized, drunken and sided up with some Dulce de

      A Wine Pairing for Pears
Last week was almost all about white wine for me. One that I didn’t get to writing about was the 2004 Hiedler Gruner Veltliner. I had the 2005 at The Slanted Door several months ago.) The older vintage definitely seemed rounder than what I recalled the other being, though there were still citrus and herbal notes, along with pepper and apple. I was actually scared the wine might have been cooked, as there appeared to be a bit of leakage and a quick sniff before uncorking was dangerously akin to Madeira. However, those fears were put aside once open. With two pears (1 Anjou, 1 Bartlett) needing to be used, I decided to make a salad. Without any Gorgonzola in the fridge, I opted for a sherry dijon vinaigrette tossed with romaine lettuce, sliced pears, shaved parmasan, and crumbled walnuts. The pairing was exactly what I wanted. The pepper in the wine stood up to the dressing’s high kick, and the round, fruity flavors made eyes with the juicy pears. The only thing that woul
