After such a spell of bloglessness I've decided that it would only be fitting to write about a recent well-publicized event. Last Sunday June 1, 2008, fashion icon and creative genius, Yves Saint Laurent passed away at the age of 71 from a brain tumor. I am actually fairly impressed that his death has generated such a large media frenzy. Normally things within the fashion world are cut off from th

Earth orbits around the sun a bit more quickly than Mars. Most of the time, the apparent motion of Mars, as seen from Earth, has Mars slowly making steady progress across the background starfield. Over the past few months, however, Mars has appeared to be traveling backwards. This is because Earth caught up to, and passed the point of Mars orbit around the sun. The Astronomy Picture of the Da

Few decent human beings (save those still suffering the mental disease of allegiance to capitalism–which is inculcated into us from birth and constantly perpetuated by the filthy whores of the corporate media) could imagine Jesus Christ walking onto the floor of the New York Stock Exchange without a whip in hand to drive out our rotten-to-the-core modern day money changers. "Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?" "I tell you the truth," Jesus said, "whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me…." Passing and catching are the most neglected fundamentals in basketball. It is essential that players develop these skill in order to mount a succesful team offense. Effective passing and receiving in the form of scoring assist is a measure of the degree of offensive teamwork and also can be an important tool for controlling game tempo offense. Because passing is the quickest way to move the ball and challenge the defense, it shoul be the primary weapon of your teams´s offensive attack. Develop the notion that passing and catching are the best offensive team plays getting the ball to an open player to set up a easy scoring opportunity. Passing guide Players need to look for the pass before dribbing. A player´s first instinct when catching the ball is to dribble, and only continual emphas
If you've ever run a relay, you understand that the most important aspect of the race is the passing of the baton. You can have the fastest runners on each leg of the track, but if the hand-off is not perfectly coordinated, you can loose the race in those minute seconds. That's why you practise the hand-off like your life depends on it. You work on timing, you work on pacing your steps, you mark the track so you can see the precise moment that the runner behind you hits that exact spot where you have to take off and trust that they will not fail you by breaking their stride. What's extremely tricky is that both parties are running at full speed and must depend on coordination and an innate sense of rhythmic timing to make that pass seamle
I saw my first Broadway show this past weekend - a relatively new show that - called Passing Strange. I was especially excited to see it because I had read a blurb in the Boston Globe earlier in the week about how this particular show is produced by Boston-based theater producer Spring Sirkin. Even on Broadway in NYC, there's a little bit of Boston in the air.The show recounted the tale of a teenage boy that leaves his middle-class suburban home in LA in search of himself and in search of what's "real." His travels take him to Europe with brief stints in Amsterdam and then Berlin while he searches for himself. He never really succeeds until he comes full circle and returns back home to LA at the closing of the musical.Passing Strange is a small production with a sparsely decorated stag

A specially graphic example was the experience of a farmer in Saskatchewan. My lawn is dead. All hail the passing of the lawn.It didn't last long once summer started, what was a tangle of mallow, weeds and grass, is now prickly, spiky and thorny. What was green, is now brown.I can't send Amy outside in trackpants, or all she does is track in dead grass and spiky seeds. I am constantly picking grass seeds out of clothes, the carpet and the clean washing.There are a few patches of green left, mostly from the grass that is stealing (stealing!) the water from my peach tree. The other green patches are the thistle bushes under the clothesline and the mallow near the door. There is no grass, just weeds.We need rain. Not because I care about a green lawn (I don't) but because I have hardly any water to keep the garden alive.At the moment, I am watering the garden using bath water. I have enough water in my tank to last us a week. Remind me to order water okay? $110 for 3000 gallons.*sigh*Have you entered my competition yet? All you have to do is comment on this po

Just passing through. that's how it's always been. Usually with my grandma. Once all alone. Most recently with my mom. This time it's for a few days. This time I'm tired. And lonely. This time I just want to go home. Not for a few days. I will be more than ready by then.
By this time I’m positive that y’all have heard on the unfortunate situation Mr. West is enduring. His mother recently passed and although its is the job of us as journalist to report important headlines, there is a necessary discretion that most ignore for attention. Salacious headlines are entertaining as long of the threshold of insensitivity and basic human respect is not disregarded.
But as most things dear, this was violated by NY magazine’s website that recently titled the story “Kanye West’s Mom Goes Out Olivia Goldsmith Style“. In reference to the famous author of The First Wives Club, who passed under similar circumstances. There is no place for ridicule in a situation like this, it is unmitigated dishonor. Shots out to Sandra Rose who broke the article. Still afflicted by the insensitive gall? Email Nymag and demand respect…

A recent story out of Maine, where a middle school planned to hand out birth control to students, sparked shock and dismay. The story ran in papers across the country.
Now comes the survey that shows most people aren't so opposed as you might think.
The Associated Press reports this morning that 67 percent of 1,004 people interviewed support giving contraceptives to students in schools. 62 percent said they believed doing so would reduce teen pregnancy.
"Kids are kids," said Danielle Kessenger, 39, a mother of three young children from Jacksonville, Fla., who supports providing contraceptives to those who request them. "I was a teenager once and parents don't know everything, though we think we do."

The truth is, I just don’t have the desire, the ability, or the experience to flag this ship. I was hoping to find a volunteer(s), who would like to become moderator(s). This really entails very little time, or perhaps you would like to give the blog a make over, or have ideas on how to breathe life back into this old horse.
If anyone other than MICKY is interested (lol), let me know.
Thanks,
Eric
I am not a huge .NET fan, but I am mature enough to overcome my personal likes and dislikes in a professional setting and use whatever is needed. I recently ran into a situation programming in C# that I needed to create a method that took it’s parameters by reference. Why would you want to do that? Well, a parameter passed by reference is… well a reference to the original memory location of the variable. This means that when you pass a parameter into a method by reference any changes made to the parameter within that method are preserved when the method goes out of scope. Ok, now we have that out of the way.
To create a method which takes a parameter by reference in C# you simply use the ref keyword in front of the parameter declaration. Easy! To illustrate this point I will use the standard swap method.
public void swap(ref int x, ref int y) {
int temp = x;
x = y;
y = temp;
}
To call this function I would have initially done the following:
int x = 5;
int y = 10;
s

When talking about state standardized tests like the FCAT, educators often talk about "cut scores." Here in Florida, a special committee advising the Department of Education has focused its attention on how the 10th-grade FCAT "cut scores" seem unfairly high.
But as this Washington Post story indicates, kids and parents don't know much about that phrase. They want to know what it takes to pass the test. As in, how many questions do they have to get right.
And that answer isn't always so clear. Each state can set up its own rules, as this Post sidebar shows. Many don't make those rules readily accessible or understandable, either.
Now the Congress is revising No Child Left Behind, and to resolve some of this confusion, a call is rising in support of national standards and a national test. But others are suggesting that since states pay the bulk of the education bill, that's not appropriate.
It seems clear something needs to be done. Should be interesting to see what happens.
Aunt Dot passed away today. She was 84.I received a call from one of my aunts this morning, telling me that Aunt Dot wasn't able to tolerate being off the respirator this morning, and so the decision had been made to remove it entirely and let her pass. They were waiting to notify all of the family and give people the chance to come to the hospital before pulling the tube.I joined much of the family at her bedside in the hospital, all of us saying our goodbyes and sharing a few funny stories. My aunts told me they found a bunch of garden hoses in Aunt Dot's apartment, and we laughed that we were probably all getting garden hoses for Christmas. Her guest bedroom contained bags of junk that she had purchased when the downtown Lazarus department store closed years ago. Those trinkets were still being used to provide gifts, and the beginnings of the Christmas gift bags were sitting in the room, too, with names already on the bags.The time came, and the tube was removed around 2pm. I had been given bloggy awards, and I am behind in passing it on. Therefore, I will do it now before the year ends ...First was the Blogger Reflection Award. Thank you Julie of Joyful Days for giving it to me. Instead of individual blogs, I would like to pass on the award to the wonderful bloggers at the Oikos Online.When you go to the link of the Blogger Reflection Award given to me, there is a rule posted there. I apologize for not following the rule exactly. I meant to follow it, but then I proscrastinated trying to come up with good paragraphs on why I am awarding it to 5 specific bloggers... (so I decided to post away a modified award giving)Second is the Nice Matters Award. Jamie gave this to me (how nice of her!). Most of the nice bloggers whose blogs I read already received this ... and I would like to spread this love around .. so like Jamie, I'd pass this on to those who are nice but have not received this award yet (or at least I didn't know they received it already)
Rounding the corner, I tripped on my shoe lace. As I bent down on one knee I looked straight out as my hands grabbed my laces and began their dance. A blinding flash, as the sun made a quick turn off a marble surface in the distance. Which happened to make my hands slip upon something they knew as well as my lungs know to breathe. I looked down to concentrate on what I was doing and finished the knot, double tied.Damn size fourteen shoe laces. After size 12, they make one size only that you can hang a full size man with. Sometimes I think they are artifacts of the appropriate length to hang myself after a full night on a bender of Martinis and M+M's. Granted a strange, mixture, but indeed this morning was one of those days I was second guessing it. I first encountered the pair on a train returning from Montreal. An older man had got me a Martini, being only twelve at the time I asked for a bag of M+M's to go along. Over the airs of a Piano player, in those days was quite common, doin
The following is a study used lucid dreamers to determine the
subjective measurement of time in dreams - by Daniel Erlacher and
Michael
Schredl from Germany.
Time required for motor activity in lucid
dreams
Daniel Erlacher - Institute for Sport and
Sport Science, University of Heidelberg, Germany
Michael Schredl - Sleep laboratory,
Central Institute of Mental Health, Mannheim, Germany
Summary
The present study investigated the
relationship between the required time for specific tasks (counting
and performing squats) in lucid dreams and in the waking state.
Five proficient lucid dreamers (26-34 years old, M = 29.8, SD =
3.0; one woman and four men) participated in this study. The
results showed that the time needed for counting in a lucid dream
is comparable to the time needed for counting in wakefulness, but
motor activities required more time in lucid dreams than in the
waking state.
