Jia and I returned to Shenzhen yesterday from our short trip to Guangzhou and the US Consulate. I have no idea if everything we submitted was in order--and we probably won't know anything for about six months or so.I also had to register to vote via absentee ballot for November's Presidential election--a more difficult process than I anticipated. Chinese addresses tend to be much longer than US ad

As much as we want to have everything organized inside our computers, there is still a lot of real paperwork sent and given to us. What are we going to do with it?

Ezra Klein has an interesting quote on how Republican false claims become regarded as fact, quoting from Health Affairs:
ONE HUNDRED THIRTY thousand pages of Medicare regulations stifle provider innovation. We know that because conservative politicians such as Newt Gingrich tell us this every chance they get. The evidence? A decade ago, the estimable Mayo Clinic added up the pages; who, after all, doesn’t believe the Mayo Clinic? This nugget, demonstrating regulation run amok, even made it into the talking points that candidate George Bush used against Al Gore in one of their 2000 debates, although Bush managed to mangle the details.
The only problem is that the number 130,000 is wrong—not just a little wrong, but about 127,500 pages wrong. I know this because as a senior political appointee at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), I was selected to defend the number in a congressional hearing. In fact, most of what Mayo counted as pages of regulations were newsl
The MBA application process contains multiple parts, and one of the first things you will have to accomplish is the application itself. Many people think they can breeze through when filling out the application paperwork, but the reality is the application paperwork says a lot about the applicant and his/her goals. You should take your time and ensure everything is filed out completely and accurately. The good news is that many programs request similar information.
Here are some tips to help you fill out your application effectively and completely:
Brainstorm / Gather Information. Before putting pen to paper, write down everything you have done throughout your scholastic and professional career. This will save you time when completing your application, and ensure you have complete answers.
Double Check Facts. Make you you enter the correct information especially for your previous schools, employers, etc.
Proofread! MBAs are expected to be the cream of the crop. It does not look good
Buying a home can be the most important investment for anyone. There are number of factors to consider while investing in residential property both as the first time buyer as well as the experienced.
The article highlights the importance of legwork involved in any home loan deal, a popular source to finance home sweet home.
The Importance of Paper Work
Dragging the closure of deals unnecessarily can bring about a severe headache. All of your significant paper work related to closure activities including the loan papers, title insurance, settlement statement, documents of owner’s coverage, and other contact papers must be competed legally before closure. Ensure to complete the entire documentation under local and state laws for the smooth transfer of property. A little leniency can lead to financial penalties and, worst of all, forfeiture of your rights to that property.

In an earlier post I shared a small portion of the paperwork that we've been requested to fill out in preparation for getting licensed for foster-to-adopt through the state.Oronzo and I have managed to fill out the entire packet of questions and I dropped it off at the agency today. Okay, let me re-phrase that, Oronzo filled out the Foster/Adoptive Father profile paperwork after I repeatedly badgered him and I filled out all the rest. That's okay though, it's done! So, since many of you expressed an interest in seeing more of the questions we are being asked in this paperwork, I'll continue one with a second list. Here goes!Personal Profile (My School and Work History)1. How many grades did you complete in school (junior high, high school, college, graduate school)?2. If you did not complete high school, what were the reasons?3. If you have attended college, what was your field of study and what degree did you receive?4. As you think back over all your school experiences, were they
Oronzo and I have made the decision to try to adopt through the State. We've picked an agency that we feel comfortable with and we're going to sign up for their foster-to-adopt program. We're still going to keep the word out with family and friends for a private adoption situation, just to keep our options open. But, since nothing's happening on that front, we're proceeding in this other direction.I'd like to share our experiences along the way with adopting through the state. Of course, I won't be able to get into specifics about the child we might be placed with or the family of that child, they deserve their privacy after all, but I will get into specifics about the process itself and our interpretation of it. I hope that others will learn from our experiences, as I have learned from others.Adopting through the state seems pretty scary to me right now, but a part of me has decided to let go of that fear. I'm tired of it holding me back. I'm ready to make a leap of faith. So,
LA Times is reporting ....India to outsource paperwork to American firmBy David Colker, Times Staff Writer11:47 AM PST, March 2, 2007India has taken thousands of American jobs through outsourcing. Now it's giving a few back. The Indian government plans to outsource processing of visas (visitor documents, not the credit cards) from its embassy in Washington to an American-based company.A top embassy official wouldn't say whether the 40 staffers who do the jobs now would be laid off. Many of them are Indian nationals. "We are not going to let too many go," said Gautam Bambawale, head of political affairs at the embassy.UC Berkeley professor Harley Shaiken, who specializes in labor issues, said the move "is really a man bites dog kind of story. It's a small irony in an otherwise serious situation."He said outsourcing of tech help lines, accounting work and even medical procedures played a significant role in the $11.7-billion U.S. trade deficit with India last year."It's nice to know t
All things start in Iowa (for now), and so that's where we'll kick off our account of our week-in-recent-history. Indeed, it is with Tom Vilsack that we begin. Iowa's Governor, who is certainly one of the lower-key candidates that we're tracking, has been walking across the state, to remind everyone who he is. In particular, says the Des Moines Register, Vilsack will be hoping to connect with rural Iowans who, presumably, might be better disposed to him than the out-of-state politicians who tend to stick to the big towns and cities. Vilsack steps down from office after this year's elections, and he's going to have a hard enough problem building his profile nationally without having to do it in his own home state. I'm not clear from the article whether or not Vilsack is actually going to walk the whole distance across the state. I'm guessing not - he theoretically still has some governing to do.You know those boxes of magnetic words you can buy in order to write poetry on the re
