Have you been neglecting your hands lately? You are not alone; most Indian women do – all that household work of cleaning, swabbing and doing the dishes takes a toll on their hands. Their hands take more abuse than just about any other external part of their body; they lose that youthfulness and look rugged and aged beyond years. Their palms especially are more vulnerable and become rough and

According to Dictionary.com, a Hammam is: a communal bathhouse, usually with separate baths for men and women. The fine folks at Palms Place in Las Vegas don't believe in such hog wash. Their version of the Turkish bath is, let's say, more liberal. Unlike their more traditional counterparts in the Middle East, the Palms Hammam is a coed facility and has been designed to create an environment of sensuality through the use of sexy lighting and mosaic-tiled walls and benches. While we've never actually been to a Turkish bath in Turkey, we envision the visuals to be a bit more pleasant at the Vegas version. One disappointing aspect of the Palms Hammam is that while coed, it is NOT clothing-optional. Lame. However, we're sure there will be plenty of barely-there bikinis which will make y

Isle of PalmsSouth Carolina17 August 1997From about 1985 through 1990, I painted architectural portraits on commission, mostly of homes. I take a lot of pleasure in drawing and painting houses. In 1985, beginning with a study made for a mother's day card, I painted the small Mediterranean Revival house where I lived in Sarasota, Florida. That became the prototype for a larger project over the following year. I selected twelve examples of different historic residential architectural styles from the city's master site file, hunted them down, made a watercolor of each, did research on the buildings, architects and early residents, then wrote up my findings. All this just happened to coincide with Sarasota's centennial celebrations so I was able to conclude the project with a show of the pa

The 3 gallon pot of Livistona chinensis, Chinese Fan Palms that I purchased this weekend for $15.00 finally got separated. This was a project trying to separate the root ball without damaging any of the roots. I think I did a pretty good job not breaking any of the big healthy roots. When I pulled these out it seemed to be a total root ball with barely any dirt in the pot. I could not image planting this many of these palms in a small clump like they were in that pot. When it was all said and done my $15.00 bought me 13 of these palms. I planted 5 in the yard. And then repotted the rest. 2, 3-gallon - 2 bangers, 3, 3-gallon singles, and 1 baby 1-gallon.Come Watch my Plants Grow

This is one of my charity posts again. So here's the deal: Palms for Life volunteer, Liz Ross, will be traveling to Tanzania in East Africa this summer to work with disabled orphans in the city of Bukoba and in her luggage, she will be carrying 100 Palms for Life T-shirts. In order to do that, Palms for Life needs your contribution to help towards her minimal expenses of $3,000. So the idea is not just to give money (which is great of course and the main objective) but for people to "connect" with the poor. That's why all contributions of $50.00 or more will receive a free Palms for Life T-shirt as well. That means that you're gonna be wearing the same t-shirt with some hundred kids at Tanzania! That sounds unique...*To read more about Palms For Life Fund head over their website.*To read more on Liz Ross head over their blog.

Before I go to an area to paint I go to my mailing list and pull names from the region where I will be painting. For example, for my trip to the Forgotten Coast I have sent promotional materials to people in Port St Joe, Mexico Beach, Cape San Blas, Apalachicola, Tallahassee, Panama City, and the Destin Area. I also sent press releases to all newspaper and style magazines in those areas. Both of my trips are prominently displayed on my artist resource page and home page of my web site. Acrylics don't blend all that easily, so I have learned to use scumbling, stippling and short choppy brush strokes to simulate blending. They work quite well in various combinations. The grasses were all done with short choppy brush strokes and stippling layers of color. It is hard to see in a digital image. The trunks were scumbled and stippled and most of the background trees were layered ith multiple short brush strokes and stippling. Then the background was thinly glazed with several layers to make the trees recede. The interesting thing is that these techniques have made me a better oil painter too. I don't do nearly as much blending with oils as I used to. I have stolen some of the methods I learned from acrylics and am using them in my oil paintings. Way Cool.

I line the paints up at the very top of my palette in ribbons of color, not blobs. The ribbons allow me to pull paint off the end and move it further down on the palette for mixing. I keep the white at one end, separated from the other colors. It is the easiest to contaminate. If I am using a split primary palette I keep the warm and cool version of each color side by side, so I will have two yellows, two reds and two blues.I pull the end of the ribbons off and move them down on the palette to make my color mixtures. When it gets too crowded with mixtures, I take a paper towel and wipe down the palette, leaving the original ribbons at the top of the palette untainted. I just rub the paint into the palette until the surface of the paper towels are clean. This keeps the palette oiled and smooth as glass. Then I can start mi
Hillsborough County’s Planning and Zoning Department has put the kibosh on a controversial rezoning request that could have put 1,500 condominiums near Bruce B. Downs Boulevard.
The project was slated for a 644-acre site between Lake Forest and Tampa Palms. The site is mostly wetlands, so the condo towers and a shopping center would have been squeezed onto 79 acres.
The zoning staff has received hundreds of letters and e-mails from residents who oppose the project.
The developer, Giunta Group, applied for the rezoning in January 2006 and has had the case continued every time it was scheduled for a public hearing. It was scheduled for a hearing March 6, and the developer again asked for a continuance, to May 1.
Zoning Director Paula Harvey told the developer and its planner there would be no more. “Please be advised that if the requested/required information, including revised site plans, fees and notice is not provided in order to have this application heard at the May 1

At the end of each day, I scrape all of the paint into one pile and mix it up. Depending on my palette it is usually brown , gray or green. I clean off the rest of the palette, leaving the pile for the next day. I use the pile for block ins and for neutral areas of the painting I am working on the next day. It is a great way to save paint. It works very well for tree trunks too. It also is useful for toning canvases or panels before painting. If I have too much to use up, I put it in a small glass jar with a lid, so that it will last. This saves money in the long run and keeps paint from getting thrown away. Oil paints are expensive, so the mud pot is great.

For one thing the color is very rich with this medium, more jewel like , and the paint handling is fantastic. The paint sets up beautifully on both canvas and panels and you can work for a long time without any overworked areas. I am becoming a fan. Evolving In Our Process
I believe that painters who are open to new ideas, will evolve in their painting process. I started out as a drawing major in art school and did many years of painstaking, photorealism drawings. I became bored with the process and progressed to fresh new drawing experiments, which were less fomulaic. I painted some large abstracts in art school which were quite bad of course. About 15 years ago, I did a period of very loose pastel paintings for a couple of years. They were primitive, primary colors, mostly palms, and I still run into people who wish I was still working that way. I then began playing around with oil landscapes, and became a plein air painter about 13 years ago. I did that exclusively for about three years. I was very much into the whole phenomenon of being a "plein Air snob". After a time, I felt the alla prima method of working lacked finesse and refinement. It

Why do I write this?
Once a few years ago, I entered a top regional show, coveted by all, and was accepted. I was so smug and proud of myself. My hubris knew no bounds until I realized that the painting I had submitted was two inches larger than their size restriction allowed. I was horrified. I called the director, begged and pleaded, even offered to send a substitute painting. Of course they said NO. My lack of attention to detail cost me a fine exhibit for my resume and possible prize money.

Live with it for awhile
I saw a discussion about where artists like to hang their work at an online forum recently. I think it made a good point that we need to have a stage for our paintings to hang for a bit. We need to be able to look at them in their glory, properly framed and hung in a furnished room. It's not always possible to keep them long enough for that, with sales taking priority, but I sometimes keep paintings in the studio for months just because I like them and want to live with them awhile.
Find a spot on your wall for the latest painting to hang and keep changing them out. Be sure to put a frame on them and enjoy them for a bit before they go to their new homes.

More on Workshops....
You should research the teacher you will be studying with. Take the time to look up references and testimonials about the teacher.
Remember that a fantastic painter can be a not so great teacher. A moderately good painter can turn out to be a fantastic teacher. You need to be sure that the teacher fits your style of learning and working. Some teachers are not organized and fly by the seat of their pants. That's fine if you are comfortable with a haphazard approach to learning. If you need to learn from someone who is very organized and thorough, then you will need to find the right teacher for a more organized workshop with good time management. It is all too easy to spend time with a teacher who is sweet and loving but, who doesn't get much accomplished. You discover that you have had a lot of fun but didn't learn much.

Pricing your work
This is a topic of endless debate among artists. Here is my take on it.
There are several factors which should go into pricing. The first being brand name recognition. Never underestimate the importance of that. Brand name isn't about skill, it's about brand. You can be a highly skilled painter with no brand name and your work will not sell for the prices that Joe or Sally can command because they are well known. Their work may not even be close to a good as yours but they will command much higher prices.
Another factor is location of your market. If you are living in an urban sophisticated market then the chances of higher prices goes up. If you live in a rural farm community you will have to market outside of that area or paint subjects which appeal to rural people. This is of course a generalization but true much of the time.
Do you want to wholesale your work or

You will need to come to this blog to see the paintings rather than the Daily Painters web site. It became just a bit too expensive to be a member and I must be careful about where I invest my resources. I wish them all well and much success with the venture. Tonight I am being honored by the local school board for my generosity in donating paintings for many years to their Special Education fundraisers. My name will be on a plaque at the school board office. I am very touched by this and happy to have touched other lives for the good. My painting was included this morning on the ARTIST HIDEOUT web site, which was a real treat. For Gainesville, Florida area friends, my annual Books, Inc. studio sale is in full swing. Paintings range in 35.00-500.00. and I have lots of paintings to select from. Books, Inc. is located on the corner of NW 13th Street (US

Bad ones by the way, along with preparation for a wild and crazy March schedule. I'm leaving for a week of fun painting at the Wekiva River State Park near Orlando Florida, the first week of March, Then two days later I must run up to Alabama to pick up my daughter for Spring Break , coming home in the same day. Two days later I leave to be "artist in residence" for the Florida Trail Association Conference for two days. There will be large gaps in my posts during March. I don't think there will be any internet access in the state parks I'll be staying in.Painters TipPreparing for important commissions.I'm sure that some artists are talented enough to just jump in and do commissions with little preparation. I'm not that talented. I'm one of those who is a planner for everything. When I get
