      A painful memory...
She sat all alone, the walls of her tiny dorm room enclosing around her. She sat on the black futon, covered in food crumbs and dead skin cells. She had lived on that futon for days, unable to get up. She didn't bathe, didn't brush her teeth, didn't do anything. She just sat. Depressed and alone, she sat. Her beautiful blonde hair, once coiffed to perfection each morning, lay in tangles of frizz about her shoulders. Her skin was covered in blemishes. Pores were stuffed with dirt and oil. The tear stains on her cheeks were visible to anyone, as were her puffy, reddened, bloodshot eyes. The pajamas she wore needed to be washed days ago. She continued to wear them because she simply did not care. She didn't have any will left for life, much less for laundry. A thousandth tear floated down her cheekbone. Lips trembling, hands shaking, she looked down at herself and the pit of despair she'd built for herself. There was no hope left in those eyes; life no longer wanted to continue wi

      Painful sucks
PETALING JAYA: What was supposed to be a nice traditional treatment ended up being a horrifying event for Liew Yooi Hean. Instead of getting a soothing cupping therapy, the 28-year-old salesman ended up suffering from painful burns, which left marks all over his back. Last Sunday, he went to a local massage parlour in Puchong here to get the treatment, but midway through the session he experienced an extreme burning sensation. “For 20 minutes I was left alone in the therapy room with my back on extreme heat,” he said. The therapy involved placing heated glass cups on the back. People believe that the treatment helps remove wind from the body. “I noticed blisters all over my back and there was water and blood oozing out,” he added. He only discovered some 28 suction marks on his back when he got home. Liew paid RM90 for the therapy, which included foot reflexology. “The blisters and marks were on my shoulders right down to my lower back,” he said, adding

from Jan’s blog: A Painful Joy
One of our fellow women in worship, Jan Owen has recently written an entry at her blog in response to her experience of being a part of the ordination of a fellow woman in ministry. In it she also talks about some of her own experiences of being a woman in ministry & hearing God’s call for her life. An excerpt: This event affected me in a very deep way. I received my calling into ministry at the age of twelve and really didn’t know what I was called to exactly, just that God had something special for me to do. As I served in youth ministry I truly loved that and enjoyed our kids so much. But it was in worship ministry that I felt my truest sense of calling confirmed. When I lead worship I feel a great peace and joy that THIS is what God created me to do. As I direct others to focus on God I know that “yes, this is what I was made for”. But acceptance in that position as a woman has not always been a given for me. Check it out for a thoughtful & upliftin

What A Financially Painful Childhood Can Teach You about Money
This is a guest post by Dough Roller - a happily married, father of two, on a path to achieving financial independence. Want to know how people fight their way out of $55,000 in debt? … head over to his inspiring blog to read all about it. Earlier this month, this blog published a reader comment that sparked some controversy - it seemed to imply that most personal finance bloggers were rich and didn’t have any major financial obstacles in their life. [Editor’s note: the comment author wanted me to remove the quoted part of the comment - so that’s gone now.] I read this and thought the reader was describing me. My wife and I have gone from a negative net worth 15 years ago to substantial savings today. Although none of what we have was inherited or handed to us, a high salary has allowed us to max out our 401(k) and save a little extra. Add in real estate appreciation and no major financial setbacks, and you have two “middle-class millionaires.” But if

      Painful Preaching Advice, pt 2
As I mentioned yesterday, I've recently had some mentoring time with my Pastor. It's really been a great experience and I'm grateful for it.Today, I thought I'd share with you all some other advice that Pastor Bill shared with me. And to be honest with you, it put the final squish on a box that I had placed God in.For those of you who don't know me, I have a strong Assembly of God (Pentecostal) background. One of the things that we as Pentecostals like to emphasis is the "flowing" of the Spirit (as in reference to the one doing the preaching). I can remember pipe dreams, while in Bible school, of being "so spiritual" that one day, I would walk up on the platform, flip open my Bible and begin speaking the Word of God without any study and/or preparation.Once I actually stepped out into ministry, that bubble burst. I realized that that was what it was, a pipe dream. Now do I believe that it's possible to do what I described? Absolutely. But do I think that doing that on a weekly bas

      Painful.
That’s how I’d describe my head on Saturday morning and Ireland’s display against the Namibians in the rugby world cup. I didn’t see the game as I was en route to Basel from Cork where the stag do was on. We had a great weekend and I was glad that there were no serious plans in place. It meant we could go for a few pints and then sleep in and watch the rugby during the day. Everything was at a nice steady pace so I feel relatively fine today. But I can’t believe the result in the rugby! I don’t know how our team of professionals (who seemed to be on every advert in Cork at the weekend) can be given a run for their money against a team of part-timers. It doesn’t bear thinking about and now I have serious doubts about the France and Argentinian games. I don’t want to go to Paris to see us throw it away in the last game against the Pumas. To cheer me up I did get the latest Ross O’Carroll Kelly book and read the majority of it on the w

Getting my shit together is painful and dangerous!
So I took up Craig Harper’s challenge to get my shit together ( I can’t believe how many times I have blogged the word shit this week LOL) I had planned to start yesterday anyway, but I don’t think I would have lasted too long..so hopefully this will help to keep me going. For my Birthday 2 weeks ago, I bought myself a bike. I had been nagging for one for weeks. Finally he took me to get one, got a great bargain and he go one too. It was very pretty, purple and not to girly looking. He went to put it together, the pedals were missing, and BOTH wheels were buckled..grr. So there was no Birthday morning bike cruising. So by the time we stuffed around waiting for the mechanic to come in and fix it, then I decided I didn’t want to wait and got this one instead. If I was going to be embarking on this new bike riding lark..I was going to need some tunes (music to drown out the people laughing perhaps) My beloved iriver wasn’t going to cut it. While it’s

PAINFUL REALTY REALITY IN $5M+ NYC MARKET by NY Post - 8/17/07 snips:Plunging stocks on Wall Street could mean panic selling on Park Avenue. While most of the nation is already in the midst of a residential real estate slump, industry watchers say New York City - which posted record sales and prices in the last quarter - is about to experience a reality check. "It's getting very scary," said one generally optimistic high-end broker. "We're just waiting for the other shoe to drop." For the first time in several years, the top 10 percent of the residential real estate market, generally $5 million and above, is bracing for a big hit. "It's unusual that it's affecting confidence in the very high end of the market," said Dolly Lenz, vice chairwoman of Prudential Douglas Elliman, who has seen less enthusiasm by potential buyers in just the past few weeks. But Lenz notes she's still seeing healthy activity for homes less than $5 million. Fueling the scare is the very real possibility th
