When it’s black out it is definitely black out. I often think why it is that whenever I happen to lose power it occurs on the darkest of nights with no moonlight what-so-ever? Well all that shows is the necessity of having a well equipped power outage Survival kit.

A sun outage is an interruption in or distortion of geostationary satellite signals caused by interference from solar radiation. The effect is due to the sun's radiation overwhelming the satellite signal. Generally, sun outages occur in February, March, September and October, that is, around the time of the equinoxes. At these times, the apparent path of the sun across the sky takes it directly
Tunisia is connected to the outer world through tow submarine connections: the major one from France and the other from Italy thus I have been acknowledged from a Tunisie Telecom(Tunisia monopolist telephone company) Insider that the internet connection would be down tonight from 10 pm to 10 am local time (+1 CST) for maintenance purposes. What the hell is going on? and even if there was such maintenance works, why we shouldn't be able to get through the other one even with limited access? in my humble opinion we would be off for a while, exactly as it happened in the middle east.Something is happen inning in the background and nobody wants to tell about it, I'll may be able to write again here. in the meanwhile hope me good luck, in Tunisia Internet is no more an alternative playground for

Three Texas residents filed a lawsuit Friday on behalf of themselves and others who have had trouble connecting to Xbox Live in recent weeks. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Houston, claims Microsoft's outages represent a breach of contract and negligent misrepresentation for which the software maker is liable. The suit doesn't claim specific damages, but notes the amount is in excess of $5 million. In the suit, the plaintiffs allege that Microsoft should have known strong holiday sales would tax its servers. "Microsoft knew the increase in subscriptions would increase game-play on its servers, yet failed to provide adequate access and service to Xbox Live and its subscribers," read the fi

Blogger, my oh-so-flaky web host, seems to have been down for a good long while tonight, so my apologies to folks trying to access the blog. I am planning on moving the site to WordPress very soon (maybe in the next few days), which would allow for a lot more control and flexibility. I seem to spend my days working on WordPress for most other sites at present--this is my only Blogger project. If things get weird on the blog for a bit, that's what happening. I'll keep you posted on this.
Bittorrent is facing a small crisis with the loss of Leaseweb for hosting Bittorrent trackers. The major issue with a Bittorrent tracker is that it consumes a very large amount of bandwidth to ensure that all the open peers and seeders for a particular torrent file are maintained and current.
Azureus has a distributed tracker system that helps it work without having a formal tracker to connect to, to grab a torrent file. This in many ways is similar to how the later versions of P2P protocols like eDonkey worked before the MPAA figured out there had to be a central way of connecting peers to other peers. The Azureus trackerless system though requires that other clients also use Azureus to connect using the distributed system.
However, a distributed tracker does exist, and if the major Bittorrent trackers are stopped on 01 December 2007, then the next step in how to keep the culture alive is to use a distributed tracking and searching system based on (N) number of smaller trackers. A d

You may be used to pickup your phone at anytime and be able to hear dial tone. That is to some people is a God given right!I still have an old phone (one that does not require power connection, other than being connected to the POTS, Plain Old Telephone Service, line) for calling someone during a power outage. It sits proudly among all these expensive phones, including VoIP. I do have Battery Backups for my Phones, My Modems(DSL) and Network Gear. But sometimes it happens that everything works in my house but the DSL service. So I have to use my regular phone service. Why did I write about this? Because I realized that it might be a problem to most people with new phone services. It could be DSL with VoIP, Cable Service with VoIP, Skype, or Vonage like service. But they might not work as they used to, when you had a POTS line only, during a power outage. But instead of me telling you how to cope, let me direct you to CalPhoneInfo.com's article on the same subject. Although the site is c
A small hurricane slammed into Louisiana last night, because Louisiana hasn't had enough of them yet. Over 75,000 homes went dark. As I live to the west of Louisiana, we were also watching this little storm tumble its way through the Gulf of Mexico. A popular financial blogger, AllFinancialMatters, was right in the middle of it.So what, if any, provisions do you keep should you have an extended power outage? When flooding occurs, there is also the possibility of contaminated water. The basic supplies that we keep on hand at all times include:A battery powered flashlightCandles, matchesOil burning lamps and a few containers of oilSmall bottles of water (we have about 15 in our fridge that we always refill - we like to drink water)Gallon jugs of water in the garage, we have a few of thoseCanned foodsThese are the supplies we always have. They would tide us over for a few days if we are stuck without water/electricity. This is all we keep on hand, unless there is a major hurricane defini

Just a few weeks ago tour blog was dominated by the iPhone, now it’s the iPlayer that’s making the headlines. We’re talking about the BBC’s on demand TV service which will enable internet users to watch programmes within seven days of broadcast, and it’s free. It’s a great idea, and should be a fantastic resource, but it’s currently only compatible with Windows XP users, which has left some people frustrated. Well, when we say some, we mean at least 16,000..because that’s how many have signed an e-petition protesting about the rollout of the service. They want the BBC to develop the system for non-windows platforms, and argues that the current format excludes certain people, therefore goes against the corporation’s ethos. The deadline for signing the petition passed at the beginning of this week, and now the campaigners are waiting for a government response. (more…)

I was astonished to read today over at the Skype blog that the major Skype last week’s outage root cause was the fact that many Windows users rebooted their PCs in a very short timeframe after receiving patches sent out on “Patch Tuesday” from Windows Update.
Millions of Skype subscribers (paid and free) can’t accept such a lame answer.
I was wondering whether we should expect such outages following the release of Service Release 3 for Windows XP, or other major Windows updates. In addition, i believe the Skype team needs to improve the communication of any service disruption to its users. I know more than 10 Skype users that spent more than half an hour each trying to to tweak their PCs in order to fix what turned out to be a major outage. I hope the Skype team should sit and do their homework on those”unseen bugs”, as last week’s outage was the culprit of Skype’s inconsistent serv
Am I the only one to find this claim a little bit of a puzzler? PC Pro writes,
Skype blames Windows Update for 48-hour outage
Skype is pointing the finger at Windows Update for a critical system crash that wiped out the VoIP service for two days.
In a statement posted on the company’s support page, the company claims: “The disruption was initiated by a massive restart of our user’s computers across the globe within a very short timeframe as they re-booted after receiving a routine software update.” This is presumably the Windows updates that were sent out on Patch Tuesday last week, which required the PC to be restarted.
Of course on the Skype blog they don’t actually refer to the term “Windows Update”, they refer to a “routine software update” which many websites have subsequently replaced with “Windows Update”. Given Windows Update does fit the criteria for a mass “routine software update” in relations to t
Unless you have been hiding under a rock this week, I am sure you have heard about Skype’s “outage”. The service was down for over 30 hours. eBay purchased Skype for a wopping $2.6 billion dollars back in late 2005, which makes me wonder where they were throughout this entire debacle?
I don’t recall the last time eBay suffered a 30+ hour outage. They must still operate as two very separate companies or wouldn’t eBay with all of it’s money and knowledge be able to get Skype back up and running in a shorter time frame? Maybe I just don’t understand the situation fully, or maybe Skypes explanation of a “deficiency in an algorithm within Skype networking software” is just a little vague? Maybe all the money and power in the world could not have solved the problem any sooner.
I’m just glad I don’t use Skype as a business critical piece of software. I do have an unlimited account but to be honest I rarely use it, favor
At long last the VOIP service Skype is now back online and running as it should be.
This follows over two days of Skype being down and Skype users suffering from “sign in” problems.
Villu Arak, the Skype spokesman said: “The sign-on problems have been resolved. However Skype presence and chat may still take a few more hours to be fully operational.”
The Skype outage was first confirmed on Thursday, but reports of Skype not working properly were surfacing on the internet as soon as Wednesday afternoon.
Hopefully, in the view of Skype at least, this will not happen again.
What did you think of the Skype outage?
Has the Skye outage taken too long to resolve?

It is Friday and Skype is still down but keep coming up in sections. But please let me know what an algorithmic deficiency is? I am suffering from Alcoholic deficiency being this is Friday afternoon and been thirsty for a week! This controls the interaction between me and my friends who drive me home to prevent me from getting a DUI and have nice car for next day to run around! I end up having breakfast for lunch and call it brunch in a nearby restaurant. But the main reason I brought the alcohol up is, once I had it, I too, don't know what I am saying.I found this on the heartbeat blog by skype mentioned in my previous post on Skype outage, The new posts will bring updated information. Hopefully not after a weekend of drinking. But I can't login;) to post a comment asking the question;what is an algorithmic deficiency?Tags: skype, skype down, skype outage, algorithmic deficiency
Skype home page has this message; Hello all, Here’s the latest on the sign-on problem. We’re on the road to recovery. Skype is stabilizing, but this process may continue throughout the day. An encouraging number of users can now use Skype once again. We know we’re not out of the woods yet, but we are in better shape now than we were yesterday. Finally, we’d like to dispel a couple of theories that we are still hearing. Neither Wednesday’s planned maintenance of our web-based payment services nor any form of attack was related to the current sign-on issues in any way. We’ll update you again as soon as we can. Thanks for hanging tight. Please see our Heartbeat blog for ongoing updates. UPDATED 17 August, 2007 11:00 GMT Tags: skype, skype outage
Skype has confirmed it is having software problems on its network, resulting in a lack of connectivity for millions of Skype users. Many users cannot currently authenticate to Skype, rendering all voice, chat, and voicemail services effectively offline.
Cisco Wednesday became the object of ridicule in the Blogosphere when it suffered a Cisco.com website outage for several hours. "Welcome. Welcome to a brand new day. A day that is, without Cisco's website," taunted the Valley tech gossip website Valleywag.com. "Apparently the 'human network' means the 'all too human network.' This is beyond embarrassing for the purveyor of network infrastructure. It's a technical snafu that verges on legendary."
The Digg.com website had a posting noting that Cisco was celebrating its bang up quarterly results and soaring stock price by "taking their site down." Cisco itself addressed the outage in its own Cisco blog blaming it on a "facility" issue. "We have traced the cause of the issue to an accident during maintenance of a San Jose data center that resulted in a power outage in that facility," said a Cisco blog posting. "We would like to thank our customers and partners for their patience. We expect to resolve the issue shortly." Cisco's fir

There is panic because of the SAN FRANCISCO Power Outage Power Outage which has got many sites like netflix, Craigslist, Technorati and LiveJournal down. San Francisco and its surrounding areas are experiencing a major blackout and many companies are affected by this within 35 miles north of Silicon Valley.
I was trying to use Technorati and some others like Alexa and experienced trouble, one minute it come on the next it would go, many other people experienced troubles as well where things failed to ping and with a reply on a tracert, then 404′d from their browser.
Most are back on now and they are trying to get all the systems all back to normal, the report came in at 1:50pm PDT saying they experienced a city-wide power outage and are working hard to get the spiders back up and crawling. However, last night's commotion did not stop visitors from taking a ride today. The power failure happened around 8:45 Saturday night. The St. Louis Fire Department says it appears there were roughly 40 people in each tram, 100 at the top of the Arch and others in loading zones."The tram is just like any other elevator, they are mechanical. Well this evening has been eventful. First there was a really wacked out set of parents of the lady across the way, who took it upon themselves to storm in there daughters house and just start swinging, apparently this is not the first time. They got away of course. Weird thing is though, the guy I seen in the car as it was speeding off, was the same guy I got a creepy feelin' from the other night as I was walking bella outside. I seen him out there standing in the dim light, and then looked again and he was gone. Just after that happened, the power went out. Apparently there was a power pole that caught fire somewhere near by, and put more then a few blocks in a blackout for an hour or so. That was interesting to say the least. I need to make a memo to stock up on flashlights and candles, because it was really dark in here..lol. Anyhoo that's about it for now. I am really enjoying this design. I am making teensy tweaks to it,hope Peggy doesn't mind.. :)
A cause for concern, a needed plan of action, and the feeling of an early omen sent to keep me on my toes, are what I'm feeling about the recent power loss. This is the third such power outage in a week and it's time to really take heed of those warnings and do something about them, the next time I may not be so lucky.Firstly, I have to be more vigilant than ever about backups. That is a given.Secondly, I need power at my desk-side. Most of my tools are on my laptop so a suitably sized UPS needs to go on the shopping list to give me a good few hours juice. Selected other users also need juicing up - I can't have another afternoon of users twiddling their thumbs for hours on end.Third, I need better sight of things. This means getting another PDU, and loading up the necessary monitoring software - not only that but I need to be using the monitoring software. I need to know instantly the draw of power on each and every UPS. The small Belkin UPS died under the pressure and I need to kn
Welcome to another Blog Your Blessings Sunday.Saturday evening a transformer blew and we lost electricity for a few hours. We still had some daylight for a bit, but I lit a few candles and an oil lamp to help away from the few windows in the mobile home. The kids got very bored (so did Jim) and baby ND cried a lot because she still doesn't feel well (half the kids are beginning to feel better). I, however, took the opportunity to go through piled up paperwork.I processed a nine-inch high stack and archived four year's worth of writing financial papers.Woohoo! Talk about a blessing. As you have probably noticed myDataBus is currently offline; unfortunately our main network provider is experiencing a major outage affecting our entire state caused apparently by a fiber cut. At this time we do not have a repair time from them, but we hope to be back soon. We're very sorry for the inconvenience; I'm sure that our users are as frustrated as we are at being unable to access your files! If we do have any more information this evening I will be posting here until we are back.
RIM has announced that the cause of this week’s network failure which is an “insufficiently tested software upgrade”. Blackberry said in a statement that the failure was sparked by ‘the introduction of a new, non-critical system routine’ designed to increase the system’s e-mail holding space. If you haven’t already, i suggest you contact your service provider and demand compensation for downtime…

According to the Network World, Rafael Paz, a loss control specialist for a car rental agency, says hes “getting my e-mails about one to four hours late minimum since yesterday.” And it hasn’t just been loss control that has suffered, he adds: “This issue sucks. I’ve been getting grief about it from my now ex-girlfriend thanks to this delay. She thought I was ignoring her e-mails when I was receiving them hours late.” “We got into a really bad argument earlier in the day,” he replies. “She sent me a few e-mails and when I didn’t respond right away, she thought I was ignoring her and called it off. I didn’t get the e-mail it was over until around 2 a.m. today.”
My advice to Rafael, is drop her, she’ll obviously an idiot for not believing you, it would take a whole 2 seconds to Google information about the nationwide issue. Not to mention its been on TV news, you don’t need to be with someone that inept.

Where were you when the servers went down?
Thats become a common question amongst Warcraft players in the past few days as they recover from the aftershocks of the great Warcraft Outage of 06. Many gamers are able to recite exactly where they were and what they were doing when they realized that normal Tuesday maintenance would be extended indefinitely, potentially making gamers lose precious hours of inane grinding, crafting, and materials gathering.
I've just been informed that the whole building will be powerless over the weekend. Bah.
