      Currently Obsessed With: Origami Pleats
Over-the-top origami-inspired looks have been showing their teeth since Spring '07 (and will continue well into 2009). But I've developed more of a taste for origami pleats, a subtler approach to these fashionable folds. (Don't get me wrong, I love origami. I just don't want to look like origami.)Max Studio Grosgrain Origami Dress at maxstudio.comBadgley Mischka Origami Pleat Strapless Dress at

So, when I read that the inspiration behind his André Lima's Spring 2009 collection was 'geometric effect' I had to do a double take. Origami puzzles
I grumble on return from the supermarket, silently. My son grumbles noisily. He protests at the outrageous art project at school, the one that inevitably involved paper, which sparked off a meltdown of gargantuan proportions. His daily paper report card provides graphic details of the horror that followed. It seems his dislike of paper and it’s texture has resurfaced with a vengeance. I grumble over a different matter, one of the many problems of living in America, especially if you’re of Scottish descent. It’s the bargains that are the problem. In Europe you might get a penny off something if you saved fifty packet tops and promised to give away your first born child in exchange. But not in America. How can you refuse such offers, even if the fridge is already overflowin

How to Make an Origami Heart
Making this heart has a lot of steps but it is really easy. This is a cheap and easy way to make something special for someone you love on Valentine's Day or just because. You can put it in an origami box and give your heart away. Steps Get a rectangular piece of paper. Usually origami uses a squared piece of paper, but this uses a rectangular piece. You can use a piece of construction paper if you like.If you draw a design, splitting it in half as shown, it will end up in the center of the heart.Turn the paper to the side that is white. Fold the top right corner downwards so that it meets the left side of the paper. Unfold it and do the same thing to the opposite corner, but this time do not unfold.Fold the bottom part that's still white in half, upwards, so that the white doesn't show

      Origami for Children
By: Elmo Kandel As far back as the mid 1800's it was discovered that origami was a delightful project for young children. Besides teaching eye hand coordination and developing concentration the child had a toy they had made themselves when they were finished. With practice a child of any age can even create a number of the more advanced figures. For young children there is often the satisfaction of being able to fold a piece of paper into a figure that they aren't yet capable of drawing. Origami teaches children much more than just how to make cute toys. They learn dexterity, they learn to listen and follow directions. They learn creativity and perception and surprisingly they learn to relax. In a world where so much is rushed, sitting quietly and folding paper figures can bring a sense of balance and peace to even young children. When doing origami with young children it is important to remember certain things:1. Practice folding the figures you plan to teach them yourself so you ca

Money Origami: art of money instead of the usual visa versa
Origami, derived from the Japanese words "ori" ("to fold") and "kami" ("paper") is the ancient Japanese art of paper pattern folding, preferably without the use of gluing or cutting the paper medium. Here is some light Origami soul food for your Saturday morning coffee, right from my friend Vincente of the Random Good Stuff: Making money doing art is one thing but this cool origami expert from

      Origami in Spain
By: Elmo Kandel The Spanish philosopher Miguel Unamuno wrote an essay on origami from a philosophical point of view. Miguel discovered the bird base and then discovered the sideways turn which enabled him to produce a string of birds and animals. His figures were quite angular and without the graceful forms of the later origamists. Fortunately for Miguel the ban on representational origami that had been in effect had expired or he would not have been allowed to design these birds and animals. Miguel went on to create original models including vultures and gorillas. Paper folding was virtually unheard of outside of Spain and Argentina at this point in time but by the 1030's Miguel's followers had helped to spread his art to the people of South America. Origami in GermanyThe German founder of the Kindergarten Movement, Friedrich Froebel brought paper folding into the kindergarten classroom primarily as an entertainment for the children. The children were taught three types of paper fol

      Is Origami For You?
By: Elmo Kandel Origami is a fascinating activity which involves folding paper in specific patterns and sequences to achieve a particular goal. However interesting it may be for some people doesn't mean origami is for you. This activity requires the individual to possess or work on certain skills. In order to take on any origami project you must be patient. These projects take time and you need to be focused and capable of concentrating. This step-by-step or sequencing process needs to be followed to the letter. If you aren't someone who likes to follow instructions, origami is definitely not for you. How are you with problem solving? How about logical thinking? Both of these skills are needed in order to make origami, especially advanced origami a success. The individual needs to be able to look beyond the current step and know what should come next. They need to be capable of forecasting the outcome of each step of the origami process. If a mistake is made or a step is skipped, it

      Benefits of Origami
By: Elmo Kandel Origami began in China and Japan hundreds of years ago. It is an activity that has proven to be quite useful in various situations. Origami is an activity that costs very little but offers individuals a number of benefits. Here is a concept that requires creativity and imagination. Folding paper may not seem educational but in reality origami has been proven to improve reading and writing skills. It's also an activity that works on processing skills. In order to complete an origami project, an individual must first of all read and understand the instructions. They are then required to process the information they've gathered from the written material before beginning the folding steps. Once the project begins there is a need for logical reasoning as the person thinks about each fold and the following steps. Origami requires concentration and teaches people about sequencing. Sequencing is part of the mathematical side of origami. This activity is used to work on indivi

      Educational Benefits of Origami
By: Elmo Kandel No doubt it's difficult for a teacher to continuously make a subject, such as math interesting for their students. Many students, especially younger children find mathematics boring. One great way to spice up a math class is to introduce the art of origami. This activity will ensure the students have fun while learning many beneficial and educational things. First of all origami can be used as a history lesson and a look into other cultures such as the Japanese culture. This activity is very prominent in Japan and students can learn how this activity is used and why it is important there. Educational benefits of origami include learning how to listen and be attentive. In order to ensure success in an origami project, the student must listen carefully to instructions and pay very close attention to their actions. Origami requires precision and neatness which will demand the student to be focused. These learning tools will teach a student to have pride in their work whic

Basic Origami Shapes and Moves, the History
It's generally accepted among scholars and artists that origami began approximately in the first century AD in China, where people discovered the simple thrill of folding paper into various shapes and forms. Many of these primitive methods survived to this day as basic origami shapes and moves. As the skill of making paper moved across the Eastern world the art became quite popular in Japan where it melded with the culture and religion at the time. Soon the Shinto religion integrated various origami shapes and creations in their ceremonies where they remain until this day. In fact, origami is a Japanese name itself meaning "ori" or folding and "gami" which means paper.Of course, at this time paper was an expensive and rare commodity, so to be able to "waste" it for origami was a hobby for only the rich. Many noblemen would create special boxes to include gifts in; combining an exhibit of skill and wealth at the same time. As the production of paper spread and it became cheaper and mor

      Thanksgiving Origami
Now that Halloween is over it is start time to prepare for Thanksgiving.  How about making an origami turkey for the table?  Here is a site that will teach you to fold your very own Thanksgiving Turkey.  I don’t know how well I would do with this.  I have trouble making paper airplanes.  I would probably be better off tracing my hand and making that into a turkey.
