DYMO Back to School Organizing Tips
The DYMO Labelmaker is great for any modern retro mama! I love labels. When it comes to making school lunches, you often have 100 things open. Just pop a label that says the date you opened the package! Cheese, meats, bread, and all that stuff. I always forget when the past due date is on the meat.Covering school books is just a drag. Slap a label on that book! No more trying to remember if math i

Organizing Your House: Garbage in, Garbage Out
When you're talking about organization there's a rule to live by that will save you all sorts of hassle: Garbage in, garbage out. You might have heard in other contexts but what I mean here is that once you bring something into your home something else has to go.We all have a finite amount of space and if you're like me every closet in your home is being used--I've never known anyone to have extra storage space because it's human nature to fill whatever closets and cabinets you may be blessed with to capacity. Think of gold fish, who will eat and grow as big as their tank allows--my junk kind of follows the same principles, absorbing any space I'll allow it.SO . . . since everyone has a limited amount of storage and I'd bet money your shelves are full every time you bring anything new int

When you are spending more than 2-3 minutes trying to search for a bookmark and you can’t find it, there is definitely a problem. Looking at the way I use delicious, I found that 1) I was under tagging i.e. not placing tags on some of the links I saved 2) I was over tagging i.e. placing too many tags on links without any regard to whether there was a previous tag that it could be categorized under Contrary to many beliefs, I think placing too many tags on a link can hinder you as it creates more clutter and makes it harder to categorize. My reasoning is, I’d rather have 50 detailed specific tags rather than 1000 that I have to sift through. 3)

      Organizing the Paper
The keys to effective papers are good organization and presentation of ideas and error-free technical skills. There are a number of sources that you can access to help you both organize and write your paper. Some are: Writer’s Guide: Political Science (Biddle & Holland, 1987); The Chicago Manual of Style (1993); “The Write Stuff” (Cronin, 1986); Writing with Power (Elbow, 1981); The Elements of Style (Strunk & White, 1979); and A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations (Turabian, 1987). Our comments on writing a paper that follow may prove helpful to you, but they are not substitutes for the fuller discussions you will find in these writing guides. There are three organizational issues to consider. They are the outline, the parts of the paper, and the approach. Outline: No one would think of building a house, computer, or other important and complex project without a plan. Students regularly write papers without a plan. As a result, poor o

      Organizing Textures
With Photoshop, you can simulate almost any organic texture that you can imagine. The hard part is choosing from the many possible routes for generating textural variations in tone and color. It has been hard for me to think of a way to teach you all of the possible texturing methods in an orderly fashion. As you will see in a moment, there are multiple choices at every step in the process. What I’ve ended up doing is generating one rather overdone texture that uses all of the major methods. As I am demonstrating the steps, I will point out the many, many other possible choices that you will have when making your own textures. This abundance of possibilities is both the best and worst thing about making textures in Photoshop. You are swamped with options. Even worse, most of the available choices generate equally terrific (though different) results—which means you will shortly be d

Lifestreaming: Organizing your web activities and social networking apps
I have decided to create a Lifestream for myself as I think it’s a great idea and lifehack. This post may help explain what exactly it is and what purpose it serves. Many thanks to Emily Chang for telling me about it and the Lifestream blog for providing great info. What is a Lifestream? It’s a single place where I can see what I am (or have been) bookmarking, blogging about, listening to, going to, and thinking about. It combines all my feeds, comments I’ve made on other blogs and social networking apps (like Jaiku, Twitter, Pownce etc.) in one place organized by time and date. Why do I have one? Mainly to … get myself organized! … track and discover my daily blogging/ web patterns … create a one stop place to interactively search and look at my previous web activities and last but not least, to share my daily web activities with you (if you are ever interested in it). I am currently using one I made from Profilactic. This will probably be tem

      Organizing Digital Photographs
Fall Colors in Northern MinnesotaI am in the process of re-organizing my digital pictures. I've been using Irfanview as my photo viewing program, and sorting my pictures into folders in my Windows file system. It works great, I can go to the My Pictures directory where there is a folder for each year and subfolders for different activities (specific trips, sports, school, friends, home). In addition to the annual folders, there is a folder titled "working" for storing new pictures that haven't been labeled and filed yet.I've had this system for 5 years, ever since I purchased my first digital camera. When something works, I tend to leave it be, even if there is a better way to do it. Why am I changing my system now? I had thought to write a post on How to Organize Digital Photographs, a simple guide to decluttering the digital pictures on your computer's hard drive. It was going to start with something like this:Whenever I ask someone for a copy of their digital picture, I c

      Organizing Bags Saturday Giveaway
Here's a great product that anyone could use. Make that, "could use a dozen" because I can think of at least that many places where these Organizing Bags would make my life easier.Let me introduce you to The Lazy Organizer's Organizing Bags, the handiest little compartments for all the loose things in your life: puzzles, cosmetics, receipts, even marbles (don't want to lose those!) Here are a few things that make these bags great:1) They're durable. I find myself using Ziploc bags for a lot of things around the house but these bags are sewn from nylon and plastic with real zippers.2) They're transparent. Being able to see what's in the bag makes life 100% smoother. I made cloth toy bags for my children's toys years ago but you can't see what's inside so the kids end up dumping things out to get a look.3) The four larger sizes come with a pocket into which a label could be inserted for easy sorting.4) They replace bulky, breakable boxes like cardboard puzzle boxes. China arrests online activist for organizing real estate price rally
BEIJING: Chinese police have jailed a man for 14 days after he posted messages to chat rooms calling for a gathering of people angry over high real estate prices, state media and a rights group said Friday. The move appeared to be part of efforts to ratchet up already tight media and Internet controls ahead of a sensitive political congress expected in October. The Communist Party congress, held every five years, will set the agenda for the party and country for the next half-decade, and will likely include a reshuffling of some top leaders. It will also mark a renewal of party leader Hu Jintao's five-year tenure.

Organizing Your Home Office - Some Advice
As you may have read in the previous post, I’m currently gutting my parents old house that doubles as my office / home. In the past day, I’ve done a little rearranging of items, some slight moving around. Figure there’s no sense in getting too comfortable because I’ll be moving everything upstairs again in a few days once we start the painting and floor cleaning. This leads us to my first bit of advice. If you have a sliding desk chair, oftentimes despite what one might think it’s better to have a carpet under you rather than a hardwood floor. I learned this today when I removed said rug from the floor and found myself unable to control my sliding across the smooth surface. Now, I’m not talking about careening face first into a wall. That would be embarrassing. I’m talking about just sitting here readjusting my position and accidentally swinging my chair left or right crashing gracefully into one of my side tables within my desk area. If

Organizing a safari- Planning a safari
There are three ways to arrange a safari – buy a tailor made or what is known as a customized safari with a travel company, buy a package, or arrange everything yourself. Whatever you choose depends on you and each has got its own advantages. For people seeking to maximize on their holidays a prearranged safari would be advised so as to save hours and days which could be spent trying to find reliable transport and accommodation. Caution should be taken when choosing a safari company especially since it is standard practice to pay in advance to ensure a booking. The nightmare scenario would be to pay for your safari and then get to your destination and discover that the company does not exist! Arranging things yourself It is perfectly feasible to organize your own safari, either by renting a vehicle, or – doing an overland safari. Should you be considering a self-drive then consider hiring a 4×4 four wheel drive vehicle. Land cruisers are a favorite. Others include Toyota Rav4

      Organizing Arts and Crafts
One of the most difficult things for me to organize has been the arts and crafts. You want certain things available to them that they can pull out anytime, but some things need to be monitored, such as paints and play dough. I created this cabinet to keep all their arts and crafts supplies in. Still, Emily would toss things in there haphazardly, as kids do, and I would constantly have to go through what was good and throw out what was bad. Plus, allowing them to get to the crayons would give them access to untouchable things, as well. ( I have “Do-A-Dot” Art on my walls as a result!) Here was my solution: 1) I used our Computer Armoir that we no longer use for the computer anymore. (But even shelves will do). 2) I bought these snapware containers for $6 at Big Lots. You see, each container snaps to the other, so it is not easily accessible to my girls. Each thing is separated and organized, yet you can use the height space here. If you pull one thing out, that is the only t

Organizing practice time - a post from John Floeter
Grant Park Symphony bassist and blogger John Floeter put out a recent post on his blog about organizing practice time. He writes:I divide practice into two large categories, technique and repertoire. Within these two categories are many subcategories.Technique Goals: physical strength, speed, accuracy, AND mental strength speed and accuracy. With the physical goals, we are running our bodies through the paces so we are consistent in our playing. With the mental goals, we are conditioning our musical perception of music in terms of pitch, rhythm, and harmonic understanding.Repertoire Goals: I try to balance between orchestral, solo, and Bach. Lately, I've been having to make room for bass quartet music. Years ago I used to reserve time to learn jazz tunes, its physical techniques, and scales.Read the rest of John's post here. This is basically how I tell my own students to organize their practice time, and it is how I approach my own practicing as well. I use Sage as my RSS news reader and so far it’s been great. This weekend I was looking at the plethora of news feeds I have subscribed and contemplated dropping some because of the huge list. I really didn’t want to get rid of any them though. What I needed was some organization! Sage does not inherently come built with any tabbed organizational tools for your RSS feeds though. Hmmm. After spending some time looking for a new reader I decided I didn’t want to change. Perhaps I could modify Sage to do my bidding. I started looking through the options and how things worked. I didn’t get that far at all before I realized that Sage just stored your RSS feeds as bookmarks. Well, my bookmarks are stored in folders. I wonder… I closed out my Sage options then went to the Firefox Bookmarks menu and Organize Bookmarks. I created some folders within the Sage folder to organize my feeds and placed my RSS feeds within their appropriate categories. Then I clicked the

      Organizing Your Time
We all have busy schedules, and the more kids you have, the older they get, the more activities accumulate. It is a slippery slope to find yourself running here and there and everywhere. With soccer on Monday and Dance on Tuesday, Church on Wednesday, karate on Thursday, and sleep overs on Friday, when do you stop as a family? When do you take time for yourself? When do you have a date night with your spouse? The answer, you don’t. “If we fail to plan, we plan to fail”. When we fail to plan our time appropriately we allow life to get the best of us, and we forget to schedule the most important things…Us! So how can we avoid letting “life” get the best of us? The first thing is to create a family calendar. Everyone’s activities, appointments, and meetings should be on one central calendar. This allows for you to not overlap activities. It is especially useful for spouses because I can easily see if he has any appointments or meetings as I am tr

      Organizing Categories
The last week has been spent focusing on the Stock Images category in my photo galleries.I have been trying to keep the layout simple without too many subcategories within the categories themselves. Building the pages and galleries and then linking them together has been a learning experience. There is really a lot of customization available within the smugmug pages - it is just finding it and figuring it all out that takes up loads of time.Uploading the images is also very time consuming as it ties up the computer and slows down the DSL connection for the other computers in my network. I try to fit in the uploading around the busy times. This week I will continue to condense and restructure my galleries as much of my work is stock related. All of my galleries will allow stock purchasing and downloading, but I think for now I will keep my Landscapes and Nature galleries separate as they are more appealing as prints also.

Christians Organizing for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China
By Mimi Rothschild As Olympic organizers in China are preparing for hosting the world at the 2008 Summer Olympics, Christian groups all across the world are planning to spread the good news of The Gospel to Olympic attendees. Among the growing list of Christian groups are The Southern Baptists who are planning on sending thousands of volunteers to spread the word of God "through humanitarian work, sports clinics, first aid sites, and other projects" Despite China's ban on foreign missionaries, Christians from all over the world are planning to attend in groups of hundreds and thousands. Millions of Chinese men and women risk imprisonment by attending the illegal underground Christian church network in China, but God has blessed China despite the government's efforts to keep Christianity out of the country! It is not clear how many Christians currently live in China, but some experts say that the number is over 100 million. Read more about Christians going to the 2008 Summer

      Organizing Tips
It is Spring Cleaning Time! Are you ready? Here are a few tips. Decide where to store things based on accessibility. If you always take your shoes off at the front door, create a center for them. Maybe a chest or decorative item that can also be used as storage. If you can toss your shoes in there they are more likely to be out of the way, and clutter free. For easy stacking, buy plastic containers the same size. Be sure to label each one of them, I use masking tape on top and sides to label. Using plastic containers is much better than cardboard. It keeps items safer, plus cardboard draws bugs, like roaches. (Someone told me roaches can live on the glue from a cardboard box for years….UGGGHH!) I go to places like Big Lots or Fred’s, close out stores, to buy my plastic containers inexpensively. Be sure to clean out storage areas about once a year. Every time we go through our things, my husband finds a few more things he is ready to get rid of. (He is the sentimental pac

      Organizing Atheists: Difficult But Necessary
Organizing atheists is often likened to herding cats. Because "atheism" refers to nothing more than a lack of acceptance of the theistic belief claim (i.e., that some sort of god or gods exist), atheists appear to have little in common besides what they do not believe. And yet, there do appear to be a few issues on which most atheists, secular humanists, and freethinkers agree and can be united (e.g., opposition to theocracy, a preference not to be bombarded with pro-religion messages, disgust over anti-atheist bigotry, etc.). However difficult organizing atheists may be, this does not mean that it is impossible or that it would not be advantageous.Imagine that you are a local politician, perhaps a member of your city council, school board, or similar body. Someone brings a complaint to you about a local ordinance, expenditure, or policy. While listening to the complainant, you realize that you agree with them. They have made a strong case for the position, and you think that they are
