The orchid wedding bouquet can be classy, simple, traditional, extravagant or just plain vibrant. This is my first Mokara Orchid. Khaw Phaik Suan x Kultana is the name and it is a Vandaceous orchid. The Mokara Orchid is a trigeneric hybrid between the Ascocentrum, Vanda and Arachnis Orchids. Created in Singapore in 1969, Mokara is now as popular as its parents. The first Mokara hybrid was called Mokara Wai Liang, named after C.Y. Mok of Singapore. This hearty hybrid has a unique flower shape and an intricate patterns within the petals of some varieties make the orchid look as though it is smiling giving it the common name "Smile Orchid". I purchased this for $25 a few weeks ago from Heathcote and have been taking pictures along the progress of the spike to the full bloom, so here is another slide show of the process.Come Watch my Plants Grow

My 2 favorite things coming together palm trees and orchids. At the beach a few weeks ago I found a palm tree decaying away. I seemed to be decaying from the inside out. I thought this might be a pretty sweet mount for an orchid. So I grabbed a few pieces and brought them home. The first thing I did was soak them in clean water for 2 days trying to remove any bugs and help remove any salt left from the ocean. I allowed them to dry in the sun for almost a week before I tried to mount any orchids to it So they seem to be very fiberous and have a very nice curve to them so the orchid should be happy. I mounted 2 small Dendobiums to 2 pieces and the other receive a large Cattleyas Haleahi Serenity. I added a little spaghnum moss in between the roots and slab to help hold some moisture in for

5"X7" Oil on panelFor me there is a point in every painting I do, usually about halfway through, when I ask myself: "What was I thinking? Did I really think I would be able to paint this?" On a good day, about ten minutes later it falls into place. This happens with a kind of "pop", suddenly I can see where I am going and how to get there. This was not one of those days. This lovely flower has been blooming away in the window of my bedroom/studio for nearly a month, calling "paint me, paint me". I could no longer resist but probably should have listened to my inner voices. Next time I try to paint an orchid I am going to go in even closer and concentrate on a highly magnified section, maybe if I can get that right I will be ready to try something like this again.

I was told that they should bloom in my area in May and June so new spikes should be on there way pretty soon and there are "zillions of different color forms ranging from green-on-white to orange to nearly solid red-bronze and they're all nicely fragrant"(thanks Settled Soul ). I am very excited to see what colors come out this

What does a spider and an orchid plant have in common? Yes, Halloween is a special day. Brassia orchid plant is a name given to these spider orchids.Indeed, you can see the resemblance to the spider in this picture. These beautiful orchids are from the Genus, Brassia, the spider orchid. The long and slender petals and septals are like spider legs. They are named in honor of William Brass, a 19th-century British botanical illustrator, this orchid grows in the wet forests of tropical Central and South America, but it is also comfortable in cultivation. Many species in the genus Brassia orchid plants are pollinated by parasitic wasps, which normally lay their eggs on spiders. The patterns and structure of Brassia orchids resemble a spider in its web enough to encourage these wasps to lay their eggs in the plants' blossoms and in doing so pollinate them. The flower spike will provide you with a number of these flowers which do resemble spiders along the spike. Brassias are crossed with Milton

I know there's lots of hoo-haa going on about the Borneo Orchid show at Tanjung Aru.. Can't remember the date, though.. Mom is planning on going I think with her "gardening gang".. Usually she'll bring me to tag along. I still don't know whether I wanna go or not.Anyways, after YEARS AND YEARS of trying to "piara" or care for this particular orchid, my mom never got it to bloom. So she got fed up of trying and just really let it be. Suddenly while getting into the car, we caught a glimpse of colour near the garage.. And there it was.. blooming in all its wonder!I'm not really into gardening but this pretty orchid really makes me feel all nice and happy. :D Maybe I should pick up this "gardening thing" soon. :)
This just sent the HYPE factor ALL THE WAY UP TO GET ME THE FUCK OUT OF HERE. There are subliminal images of course about God,

The scientist speaks of the Casimir Effect. This is long and winded to explain so you can read up on Wikipedia but what I believe will be of importance to LOST is this part:
Casimir effect and Wormholes
Exotic matter with negative energy density is required to stabilize a wormhole[1]. Morris, Thorne and Yurtsever[2] pointed out that the quantum mechanics of the Casimir effect can be used to produce a locally mass-negative region of space-time, and suggested that negative effect could be used to stabilize a wormhole to allow faster than light travel.

Insects and their relatives cause most of the problems for orchid growers. Some of them can even transmit diseases from one plant to another. This article will discuss five of the most common orchid pests.AphidsAphids are sucking insects that are some of the most problematic orchid pests. One of the signs of aphid infestation is a collection of tan-colored skins on the plant. Leaves will also become covered in honeydew and bud and flowers will become stunted or deformed. You can simply brush them away or spray them off with water.Fungus GnatsFungus gnats are also common orchid pests. Their larvae grow in potting media that is too wet, warm, or decaying too quickly. To control these pests, make sure you don't keep the potting media too wet and allow it to dry between waterings. You can also use the yellow sticky cards that are commonly used to control white flies.MealybugsSome of the other types of orchid pests are mealybugs. They feed under bracts and on the roots. They reproduce thro

The life cycle of an orchid can be divided into two distinct cycles - the growth period and the rest period. The orchid requires certain amounts of temperature, water and light in each period. The rest phaseThis occurs during the drought season in tropical sites and in the winter in temperate areas. Most orchids flower at the start of or soon after the rest period. The orchids should not be kept moist in the rest phase as this makes them produce weak new shoots. However do not keep them dry completely especially if they have tough leaves and small bulbs. TemperatureDifferent orchids flourish in different temperature zones. Some thrive in moist warm, areas others in partly moist, warm regions while other flourishes in dry, hot regions. You have to pin-point what type of orchid you have as this will directly influence its requirements. Orchids generally belong to three different categories cool, temperate or warm.Measuring temperatureOne can use a simple apparatus such as an indoor thermo

Cattleyas are often also called the corsage Orchid, and were named after the Orchid grower William Cattley. They generally come from South America. Their flowers can be pretty large - up to about 8 inches. They are also often fragrant. The only downside to Cattleyas is that their flowers only last 2-3 weeks on average. If possible, buy a Cattleya with either Laelia or another kind of orchid bred with it. You'll be able to tell these, because instead of it saying Catt. -name- it'll say BLC or SLC or LC. Flowers on these aren't as big, but you get more flowers and more bloom time!SOURCE:http://www.imagine123.com/

If you happen to be one of those people that just have to buy the "orphans" at bargain sales that are laying around half dead, please understand what you are doing. The plant has undergone a lot: over-watering, under-watering, too much heat, too much cold, and heavens knows what else. Saving these "orphans" can sometimes be done, but taking them to a dry home and expecting miracles is not reality. Most often it will require the intensive care environment of a well-controlled greenhouse to save the plant. It can take years for a plant to recover to the point of producing new flowers or even new growth. 1.Check and see how firm the plant is in the pot, if it is shaky and not firm then chances are it is either been recently repotted or it has a bad root system. If it has been recently repotted check the mix, you may want to replace it for something more suitable for orchids, even if the plant is in bloom. Sphagnum moss is often used to pot the orchids in for shipping and if it it pac
Reproduction Bumblebee Orchid (Ophrys bombyliflora)It is in the variety and the refinement of their reproductive methods that orchids truly amaze. On many orchids, the lip (labellum) serves as a landing pad for flying insects. The labellum is sometimes adapted to have a color and shape which attracts particular male insects via mimicry of a receptive female insect. Some orchids are reliant solely on this deception for pollination. After pollination, the epigynous ovary starts developing and produces a many-seeded capsule.•The Lady's Slipper (Paphiopedilum) has a deep pocket that traps visiting insects, with just one exit. Passage through this exit leads to pollinia being deposited on the insect. •Many neotropical orchids are pollinated by male orchid bees, which visit the flowers to gather volatile chemicals they require to synthesize pheromonal attractants. Each type of orchid places the pollinia on a different body part of a different species of bee, so as to enforce proper cro
This small orchid demonstrates a typical zygomorphic flower with three petal-like sepals (top, lower right, lower left), two normal petals on either side of the dorsal (upper) sepal, and the labellum, a modified lower petal in three parts surrounding and below the shiny column.Orchids have simple leaves with parallel veins. Their shape is highly variable between species; ovate, lanceolate, or orbiculate. Their size and shape can be an aid in identifying the orchid, since it reflects the taxonomic position. The leaves can be enormous or minute, or they can even be lacking (as in the Ghost Orchid (Polyrrhiza lindenii), a mycoheterotrophic species, and Aphyllorchis and Taeniophyllum, which depend on their roots, which contain chlorophyll for photosynthesis). The structure of the leaves corresponds to the specific habitat of the orchid. Species that typically bask in sunlight, or grow on sites which can be occasionally very dry, have thick, leathery leaves. The laminas are covered by a waxy
There were so many purple spotted orchids at Anchor Bottom the other day, it was incredible. There were festoons of them. There were also fragrant orchids, some early pyramidal orchids poking up as well as the one bee orchid i spotted. This is a photo of a particularly large and fine looking specimen i came across. There are also green winged orchids present at the site but they flowered about a month earlier. I didn't have a chance to go out and have a look at them so sadly i missed them. Better luck next year.
I couldn't believe it when i came across this flower. There i was happily walking along admiring all the other orchids growing at Anchor Bottom when suddenly i spied this beauty in the long grass. I've never seen one of these growing in the wild before. I think they're just incredible. I posted this picture of the bee orchid because it's an angle you don't usually see in photos. For example, I'd never noticed the small spur at the lip of the flower before because it can't be seen very easily from straight on. You might also be able to make out the flower bud ready to break open slightly higher up the stem. Apparantly the flowers open from the bottom of the stalk upwards so the flowers at the top are the last to open.
