While I agree on principle, I think there is something being forgotten about SF. SF isn't a genre about bubbly happiness and it never was. Yes, there will always be that level of "awe" where new and bizarre things take place that inspire and strike people with interest. But, SF has evolved from the Golden Age and it is primarily dealing with real world issues that we may one day face. The genre is like an early warning system in that way. It deals with realistic issues of what may be based on the technological advanc

We received a reservation a week or so back for two rooms for today. Not unusual really but it was from one of the many places that don’t tell us when people might be arriving.
Now, November is a fairly quiet month for us and they were the only people due in today.
It’s Wednesday so no school trip which meant that we were in right up to 5pm. That’s when we’d to nip out to the shop for some things but we were back by around 5.20pm.
Guess what? Yup, that’s when they arrived, wrote a note to say there were here and left!
Naturally, they couldn’t understand why we weren’t there to greet them but then we’d no idea of when they were coming nor how they were getting to us as they didn’t reply to the e-mail we sent them asking that.

In this post, I am talking how optimism can help us to fight with great problems, diseases rather than medicine.Researches have shown that optimists have more stable cardiovascular system, more responsive immune system and less of a normal response to stress compared to pessimists. So, it is time to be optimistic to get rid of illness, pessimism, tension, anxiety, frustration, stress etc.For pessimists even a very small problem escalates into a dreadful disaster and they are more vulnerable to cardio diseases compared to optimists. Pessimists lose hope and start losing their chance of survival. Then they fall to a low emotional state and their defeatist psychology leave a bad impact upon them resulting in switching off of their bodies, which cause the lose of positive response to therapy.Optimistic attitude helps to boost up the emotional strength, body immunity, improve health. Hence body continues with greater immunity power. Optimism brings happiness, relaxation and lessen stress an

“You could argue whether McLaren had a right to appeal. They could have protested the result, but they didn’t. Apparently they didn’t measure the temperature of the fuel.
“But even if the cars classified ahead of Hamilton would be excluded, would this change his position? The court of appeal will have to rule on that.”

Wall Street Returns to Work Feeling a Bit More Optimistic in Wake of Fed’s Interest-Rate Cut
NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street heads back to work this week in a somewhat calmer state of mind. Overall, investors are more optimistic now about the financial markets than they’ve been in several weeks.
An interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve is far from guaranteed, but after the central bank lowered its discount rate on Aug. 17 — a rate that several major banks took advantage of — Wall Street feels it can rely on the Fed as a safety net.
The market had its most stable week in a month last week. The Dow Jones industrials rose back above 13,300 after momentarily dipping below 12,600 in the prior week. The Dow finished up 2.29 percent for the week, the S&P rose 2.31 percent, and the Nasdaq added 2.86 percent.
Meanwhile, the yield on the three-month Treasury bill recovered to a more reasonable 4.23 percent, after briefly falling under 3 percent last Monday as n
Sony Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison has a chat with the editors at 1UP about Little Big Planet, Home, and upcoming PlayStation 3 titles. On the other end of the spectrum is Sony Computer Entertainment America’s senior executive and Chief Financial Officer, Nobuyuki Oneda, who’s optimistic about the PS3 selling less than that expected, because each PS3 unit is sold at a loss. So Sony’s loss is less than expected. To quote him: “Actually, because the number of units sold was not as high as we hoped, the loss was better than our original expectation.” Yay?

74% say they’re confident they could sell their home within the next six months at a price they think it’s worth
85% believe their house will be worth more five years from now

MarketMatador.com just covered the release and madness of the initial sale of the iPhone, but it looks like sales might be even better than expected. There’s no public expectation or sales number that Apple (AAPL) was estimating or trying to accomplish, but the current numbers should support another record quarter of earnings.
The TechCrunch.com staff has been one of the first to report the numbers out of Piper Jaffray. PJ is estimating that “Apple sold half a million iPhones from 6 p.m. Friday through the close of business on Sunday. With the devices going for $500 to $600, that’s around $250 to $300 million in cash changing hands, depending on the mix of 4GB and 8GB units sold.”
While profit margins haven’t been clear for the device, estimates have ranged from 20 to 50 percent per unit. Many websites have already disassembled the iPhone to show that aside from the touchscreen, many of the inner parts are relatively normal and inexpensive. Therefore, profit

In recent years principals who do not conform to the optimistic rhetoric of reform find themselves quickly marginalized, and if their "numbers" are not good enough, they are (soon) no longer principals.Since KERA, principals no longer have tenure as administrators. They retain tenure as teachers only. That means that if a superintendent is willing to demote a principal (rather than moving for dismissal) it can be done with the snap of a finger. That gets the principals' attention very effectively. Any comment that might undermine the superintendent's confidence in the principal's commitment is...well...just not smart. We're talking kool-aid here.Teachers can certainly be pressured too. But they do not share the principal's job insecurity. For them, the pressure comes from the princi
The majority of Americans have come to believe that the war in Iraq was a mistake and that the United States should withdraw from Iraq by September, 2008. However, perennial "maverick" John McCain has again defied the conventional political wisdom.Protected by body armor, armored vehicles, U.S. troops, and attack helicopters, Senator McCain gave his evaluation of the situation in Iraq:REPORTER: Senator, you went to a market today, and I'm sure you were under heavy guard. And the violence is down a bit in Baghdad, and there is a lot of troops here, but violence meanwhile is on the rise in other parts of Iraq. Do you have confidence that the security plan can work? A lot of commanders have talked about, you know, putting down the violence in one spot, only to see it prop up in another. What gives you that confidence?SEN. MCCAIN: General Petraeus is very pleased with the progress that is being made. He realized that it's long and hard and difficult. I realize that it's long and hard an
If homebuilders are right, the condo market will look significantly brighter six months from now, though current conditions remain substantially weaker than they did one year ago.
Condo builders reported somewhat better market conditions in the fourth quarter of 2006 than in the previous quarter, according to the latest results of the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) Multifamily Condo Market Index (MCMI). The current-conditions index remained substantially lower than it was at the same time last year, but builders and developers are more optimistic about what they think the condo market will be doing six months out. Traffic of prospective buyers also rose slightly from the previous quarter.
“The condo market is coming back toward balance following the previous four quarters when the pendulum swung from red-hot to seriously cold,” said NAHB Chief Economist David Seiders. “What we are looking for – and likely to find in 2007 – is a healthy and sustainable level o

Homeowners with ARMs are optimistic
Homeowners with adjustable-rate mortgages worry about rising interest rates, but most believe that they will be able to refinance their loans if necessary, according to a study released today. A survey of homeowners conducted for San Francisco-based Wells Fargo & Co. found that about 1 in 7 respondents had an adjustable-rate mortgage.

Whatever one may think of California Rep Duncan Hunter's chances of winning the Republican presidential nomination (I believe one of my own comments on the subject included the word 'unicorn'), I hear the Congressman appear on the Sunday talk shows and sound respectable and knowledgeable, and he certainly isn't lacking in the optimism department."There's been a lot of support expressed and things are going really well," insisted Hunter campaign chief Bruce Young. Either an exploratory committee or a full campaign committee would be established "in the next few weeks," Young said at the end of November.Hunter is clearly not without his supporters. Textile magnate Roger Milliken is one of them - he likes Hunter's protectionist stance on trade. Hunter has also been touting his national security credentials as the outgoing chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. He visited Iowa, where he talked about national defence and border security as well as going on a pheasant hunt
After a week at home with their constituents, the Senate architects of a delicate immigration compromise are increasingly convinced that they will hold together this week to pass an overhaul of the nation's immigration laws, with momentum building behind one unifying theme: Today's immigration system is too broken to go unaddressed.
Congress's week-long Memorial Day recess was expected to leave the bill in tatters. But with a week of action set to begin today, the legislation's champions say they believe that the voices of opposition, especially from conservatives, represent a small segment of public opinion. Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), who led negotiations on the bill for his party, said the flood of angry calls and protests that greeted the deal two weeks ago has since receded every day. More politics news "You just have to recognize you will get 300 calls, you'll get conflicts at town hall meetings -- all of them negative," said Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), who consulted w
"We've just got to get behind the doors and get these things resolved, which I'm sure we can do." So what is Rick Wagoner waiting for? God knows. But not Automotive News, which is happy to report (without further questioning) GM's Beancounter-in-Chief's belief that his back room boys can resolve the ongoing strike at American Axle, currently idling some 30 GM manufacturing facliities. And the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike over two-tier wages at GM's Delta Township factory. And, while they're at it, the possibility of a UAW strike at Fairfax, Kansas; the plant that makes the Chevrolet Malibu. And, at the same time, figure-out the mess at bankrupt parts supplier (and former GM division) Delphi. "Wagoner also said the work on Delphi's restructuring s
