The Value of Operating System Comparisons
Since Blaster/Slammer, namely since the start of Trustworthy Computing I am working at Microsoft in a publically facing security role. I went through all the blaming and had to take all the heat of what we did wrong and how bad we are – and I admitted there and still do today that security was not a priority for Microsoft back then (and if you quote me, please quote the whole sentenceJ). However, we changed dramatically and I am convinced that Microsoft is one of the few companies of such a size having the capability to change within the timeframe we did and the change will go on. When I did my first presentation on Trustworthy Computing, I stated publically that this is an industry initiative and not a "Microsoft only thing" – and the people laughed at me. They told me that Microsoft is THE problem and that we will never change. When I looked at the figures of e.g. vulnerabilities back then, we saw from the beginning that we were much better than everybody else but have been the b

Ebook: The NetBSD Operating System: A Guide
This guide describes the installation and the configuration of the NetBSD operating system. It addresses mainly people coming from other operating systems in hope of being useful for the solution of the many small problems found when one starts using a new tool. This guide is not a Unix tutorial: a basic knowledge of some concepts and tools is required to understand it. You should know, for example, what a file and a directory are and how to use an editor. There are plenty of books explaining these things so, if you don’t know them, I suggest that you buy an introductory text. I think that it is better to choose a general book an avoid titles like “Learning Unix-XYZ, version 1.2.3.4 in 10 days”, but this is a matter of personal taste. If you install a BSD system, sooner or later you will be confronted with the vi editor: without some documentation this could be an insurmountable obstacle. When you finish installing your system, you will be able to install whatever editor and prog

How to check which operating system is running certain domain
Have you ever wondered which operating system is running for example your friends domain? If you are running Linux at home, it is very easy to find out. Use this script in your Linux terminal: FILE=results.csv for SITE in www.bross.eu www.oliver.bz do echo -n “$SITE,” >> $FILE # Check port 79 and 80 (one closed, one open) cut out the application and OS # results and create a nice, comma separated version to show mom sudo nmap -A -O -P0 -p 79-80 $SITE | grep -Eo ‘^80.*|OS guesses.*’ | sed ’s/,/ or /g’ | tr ‘ ’ ‘,’ | sed -e ’s/80/tcp open *http *//’ -e ’s/OS guesses: //’ >> $FILE echo >> $FILE done Of course, replace www.bross.eu and www.oliver.bz with domain/s you would like to find out which operating system and web server is that particular domain running. You can even add more domains, after that, just check results.csv file created by the script. It’s easy as that. Enjoy!

Microsoft Will Alter Vista Operating System
WASHINGTON, June 19 — Microsoft has agreed to make changes to its Windows Vista operating system in response to a complaint by Google that a feature of Vista is anticompetitive, lawyers involved in the case said on Tuesday. The settlement, reached in recent days by state prosecutors, the Justice Department and Microsoft, averted the prospect of litigation over a complaint by Google that Vista had been designed to frustrate computer users who want to use software other than Microsoft’s to search through files on their hard drives. Google had made its complaint confidentially as part of the consent decree proceedings set up to monitor Microsoft for any anticompetitive conduct after it settled a landmark antitrust lawsuit five years ago that had been brought by the states and the Clinton administration. The federal government and the states were planning to file a joint status report by midnight on Tuesday in the consent decree proceedings that outlined the changes Microso

Apple, after being beaten and almost choked to death by Microsoft, Apple has unleashed what I like to call the “Mac Attack”. The Mac Attack fueled by Ipod sales, is attempting to convert Windows users by offering ease of use, aesthetic appeal and security. Hackers have been merciless with Windows during it history, Macs on the other hand have not yet suffered from these problems. Mac claims that it does not get hacked because Mac has better code, Windows and Linux users claim that Mac doesn’t get hacked because its worldwide Market share is only 2%. Apple having founder Steve Jobs return to the company has started propaganda warfare. Its Commercial “Get a Mac” features Justin Long as the cool young Mac and John Hodgeman as the older more businesslike or “Square” PC. Get a Mac has been very effective in the United States convincing 5% of the population to purchase. Microsoft Windows has tried to do the best of both worlds. Keep both Window lo

Google OS ? Yahoo browser ? Operating system - just bots really ?
Did the Google operating system finally come into being ? Was it made to compete with the Microsoft's Vista OS ? Did Yahoo also make an operating system ? And browsers !!! (Ok - browsers I can believe)Making a complete operating system to compete with Windows XP and even Vista ( and who knows - even with Mac Os X and Linux) was one of the rumours going around the Google gossip stream. And this image from a visitor statistics tool suddenly made me think they were already out. In the frenzied moment of panic (?), I realized that these were just the bots- Googlebot and Yahoobot (Inktomi bot, I guess)So, is the Google OS really out there ? Is it coming ? Well, I guess we'll all be waiting ...Google is taking over the Earth and we know it. We know that the Google OS will come. The Google browser first, then the Yahoo browser, finally the OS.Hey, is Google gonna buy Firefox ? That'll make it a Google browser , would it not ?We'll just wait and see ....

      Microsoft's Even Newer Operating System
No not Vista. The new one they’re developing right now where they learn from all of the mistakes they made when doing Vista. Bet they take out loads of frilly stuff and try and return to a robust o/s specialising in file handling and security only. Imagine, an o/s that works.  Seems that Vista can go to manufacturing provided there are no more than 500 outstanding defects. So guess what we’ll be doing for the next year to 18 months, discovering these defects. No doubt Vista SP1, probably due January 2008, will cure a lot of these ills and raise some more in case we get defect withdrawal symptons.
